Frequently Asked QuestionsQ. Who are the best teachers?A. Of course, all the instructors are equally great and each are World Class teachers in their own right. What is most important to you? What do you want to learn from the DVDs? Do you want to learn patterns, technique, choreography, or advanced patterns for social dancing? Each DVD is developed with a specific purpose, and if you know what you want this will help you select the DVD that best fits your needs. Remember, there is no single DVD that will teach everything you want to learn.

Q. What methods of payment do you accept?A. We accept Visa, MasterCard, Discover and American Express from all countries, personal checks, money orders and cashier’s checks from the USA, and drafts/checks payable in U.S. funds from all countries. All checks should be made payable to Dance Vision.

Q. What is the return policy?A. Please order with care. Q. How are the Dance Vision DVDs formatted? Are they video taped seminars or workshops?A. No, our DVDs are not video taped classes. All DVDs are produced with one instructor and assistant only.

We ask all instructors not only todemonstrate the steps, but to teach the steps as they would in a private lesson. When DVDs are not produced by Dance Vision, we state who produced those DVDs.

Q. Can you explain the different levels?A. There are many studios that use the medal system Bronze, Silver, Gold & Gold Star. We hope the following comparisons will help you:- Beginning and Intermediate are similar to the Bronze Level

- Advanced I is similar to the Silver - Advanced II is similar to Gold and Gold Star Levels.

Q. What is the DVIDA Syllabus?A. With over 10 years of continued development, the Dance Vision International Dance Association(DVIDA) Syllabus has been created by the top experts in the Dancesport industry. The DVIDA program will enhance your knowledge of stepsand skill in executing them while creating the excitement of being able to progress from one skill level to the next in an organized, easy tounderstand system that is destined for worldwide recognition. DVIDA’s mission is to provide professionals and social dancers alike with themost comprehensive, up-to-date collection of materials on the market today. The DVIDA Syllabus is recognized as one of the approvedsyllabi of the National Dance Council of America.

Q. What are Syllabus DVDs?A. Syllabus figures, or ‘school figures’ as they are sometimes called, are often likened to ice skating’s compulsory figures. They are small patterns of steps that embody the primary elements of the dance. These figures, or patterns, are generally split into three escalating levels of difficulty, often designated as ‘bronze’, ‘silver’, or ‘gold’ levels. This enables the student to master each level before moving up to the challenge of the next, more difficult level. Diligent study and practice of these elements at each level will produce a capable and well rounded dancer.

Q. What are variation DVDs?A. A grouping or mixture of steps. A strong knowledge of steps from that level of instruction is a must before purchasing any variation DVD.All of the variations in each DVD are advanced patterns which are enhanced with additional elements. The teachers in these DVDs assume that you already know the terminology, and therefore do not take as much time to explain each step as they normally would in our syllabus DVDs. These DVDs are excellent for advanced social dancing, as well as showcase and competition routines.

Q. What are technique DVDs?A. Learning a pattern or a step is just the beginning! To be a good dancer you must also learn sound basic technique. DanceVision technique DVDs will teach you the proper footwork, dance positions, connections between partners, body shaping, hip actions, arm styling and many other elements that make you feel and look better when dancing the steps.

Q. Why do I need technique DVDs?A. If you want to be a good dancer, it’s important to know the proper posture, lead, etc. Although our syllabus DVDs touch on these topics, technique DVDs explore them thoroughly. Some of our technique DVDs target a single dance while others give you a firm basis in an entire style.

Frequently Asked QuestionsQ. Do your DVDs coincide with the syllabus of competitions?A. It depends on the organizer of the event. First you should get the rules for the event. Most events usually use the same criteria. The Dance Vision Syllabus DVDs are in the range of most events. Problems can occur when you are dancing open figures in a Closed Division. Closed Division means that you MUST dance the syllabus/figures at the level you enter: Open Division gives you more freedom to dance open figures.

Q. What is the difference between American Style Tango & Argentine Tango?A. American Style Tango is a dramatic, progressive dance using body movements. Argentine Tango uses slower music, is more of a spot dance, is easier to dance on a smaller floor, and uses a lot of leg and foot action.

Q. What is the difference between American Style and International Style?A. American Style is most popular in the United States, whereas the International Style, which is also known as the English Style, is danced throughout the rest of the world.The American Style Smooth dances, Waltz, Foxtrot, Tango, and Viennese Waltz, experience more freedom and expression. They may be danced in closed or open position, allowingfor additional innovative tricks and creative arm and hand styling. The International Style Standard Waltz, Foxtrot, Tango, Quickstep, and Viennese Waltz are danced only in closed position. The technique for both styles is similar. The American Style Rhythm dances, which are Cha Cha, Rumba, Swing, Samba, Mambo, Bolero, and Merengue, have a greater variety of patterns, and are more suited for social dancing. The International Style Latin Cha Cha,Rumba, Samba, Paso Doble and Jive are more disciplined and technical.

The technique is different between the styles and changes throughout the years. American Style dancinghas always been more popular for social dancing in the United States.

Q. What is the difference between Nightclub Two-Step & Slow Dance?A. The slow dancing DVD is based on Foxtrot/Tango style figures, the tempo is all slow and even, and is based on music that does not allow you to dance a rhythm of quick and slow. An example is the song “In the Still of theNight” where neither Foxtrot nor Rumba can be applied for the tempo is an even slow beat. This is a spot dance for lovers and makes a very nice wedding dance. It even shows you how to dip in a very sexy way. This is in no way like the Nightclub Two-Step which is a rhythm dance similar to Salsa/Rumba.

Q. What is the difference between Salsa & Mambo?A. There are really more similarities than differences. Mambo has been around for a longtime and is more structured, such as breaking on the 2 beat, whereas the Salsa is not asstructured and will break on the 1 or the 2 beat or any beat you wish.

Q. What is the difference between East Coast Swing and West Coast Swing?A. East Coast Swing and West Coast Swing share many qualities such as music and some pattern similarities. It is best to focus on the differences. East Coast Swing is danced with no particular alignment, it turns right and left, and is mostly a rotational dance on the spot, not progressive. Once you master the basic triple rhythm a great emphasis is placed on pattern knowledge and variety. West Coast Swing, however, is danced with a flexible alignment structure.

The lady travels back and forth along a slot or line while the man remains more centered in the middle. In the beginning, West Coast Swing is more difficult to learn, but later on it allows for much more growth, creativity and individual expression. First, the basic patterns must be mastered. To a great extent, most patterns branch off the basic patterns. East Coast is fun and quite easy. West Coast is a dance that will be stimulating at all levels and has the capacity for infinite expression.

Q. What is the Nightclub Two-Step?A. Nightclub Two-Step, not to be confused with country western two-step, is one of the most practical and versatile social dances ever conceived. It is designed to be used with contemporary soft rock (“Love Song”) music.This type of music is common just about everywhere, nightclubs, radio, etc. The rhythm of the dance is very simple and rarely changes from the 1 & 2 count. This simple, romantic dance fills a gap where no other ballroom dance fits. It gives the dancer, either beginning or advanced, the opportunity to express and create without a rigid technique being required. It’s attractive, romantic, and a real asset to learn, as it will be used often.

Q. What is Continuity?A. Continuity means to continue yourmovement, therefore, you do not close your feet. This usually applies when you are at the Advanced I (Silver) Level or above, whereas youclose your feet at the Beginning or Intermediate level (Bronze).

Dance DefinitionsLatin American dances are danced to a Latin American beat. “Latin” is the term for the International Style, “Rhythm” is the term for the American Style.

You may hear the terms Standard, Modern and Smooth in relation to the Ballroom dances and wonder how they differ. They all represent the dances with the man holding the lady in his arms and moving around the floor. The term “Standard” has replaced “Modern” as the name for the International Style dances. “Smooth” is the term used for dancing in the American Style.

The step lists (also called the syllabus) inAmerican Style are traditionally longer, while in International Style they are shorter.

SLOW WALTZ: Danced in European courts in the mid 1700s, the romantic Slow Waltz is an offspring of the faster Viennese Waltz in 3/4 time. The rhythm was gradually slowed down over time as songwriters of ballads and love songs chose to compose in a slower and more comfortable tempo. This dance has continued to rise in popularity at anniversaries, graduations, and weddings.

TANGO: The Tango originated in the bordellos of Buenos Aires, Argentina, and is done in a slightly different manner than other dances. The hold is very different, with the lady's arm under the man’s, which creates a tighter hold for a quick staccato action and stylized poses. (Not to be confused with Argentine Tango.)

VIENNESE WALTZ: The Viennese Waltz is a fast Waltz which originated in Austria. Joseph Lanner and Johann Strauss wrote the first waltzes in the early 19th century. In the middle of the 20th century, the German, Paul Krebs choreographed the Viennese Waltz style to which we dance today. The dance enjoyed a great deal of popularity not only in Europe, but also in America, and has been used in many Hollywood productions.

FOXTROT: The Foxtrot is one of the most deceiving dances. It looks very easy, but is one of the most difficult dances to do. The dance originated in 1913 when a vaudeville performer by the name of Harry Fox performed a little trot which appealed to the social dance teachers in New York and thus the Foxtrot was born. It has gone through many changes since that time, and is now comprised of more soft and fluid linear movements.

QUICKSTEP: As the name implies, the Quickstep is a very quick and lively dance, comprised of hops, skips and kicks. The dance began as a quick version of Foxtrot mixed with the Charleston, and musical “Jazz” influences.

CHA CHA: During the 1950s, the Cha Cha was made famous by many Latino bands such as Xavier Cugat and Perz Prado. Cuban in origin, the Cha Cha rhythm is found in much of today's popular music.

SAMBA: The Samba originated in Brazil and, unlike the other Latin dances that are stationary, it has a traveling action around the floor with lots of spins and controlled bounces.

RUMBA: The Rumba is Cuban in origin and is often referred to as the “dance of love”. Sultry and romantic, the music is a mixture of African and Latin rhythms.

PASO DOBLE: The Paso Doble is a theatrical Spanish dance that characterizes the man as the matador and the lady as his cape. Based on Flamenco dancing, the character of the dance is arrogant and passionate.

JIVE: The Jive is a very fast, acrobatic, lively dance made popular during World War II by the swing music of Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw, Tommy Dorsey and Glen Miller.

FOXTROT: The Foxtrot remains the most popular social dance in the world today. Little did Harry Fox realize that his trotting on a New York stage in 1913 would become an overnight success. The Foxtrot is the foundation for many of the social dances that followed. It is enjoyed by all age groups for its ease of movement and smooth style. Foxtrot music is played by most social dance orchestras and is one of the easiest dances to learn in the American Style.

WALTZ: The Waltz appeared as a fashionable dance in Bohemia, Austria, Bavaria and other parts of Europe in the late 1700's. Danced in 3/4 timing, the recurring, even beats of music send the dancers whirling around the floor enjoying the thrill of the Waltz movement.

TANGO: The American Style Tango is progressive, moving along the line of dance using body movement. A staccato movement of the feet and flexed knees highlight the dramatic style of the Tango.

VIENNESE WALTZ: This dance originated in Mid-Europe some 400 years ago. The music is fast in tempo and sends the couples whirling around the floor--first one way and then the other.

PEABODY: A fast Foxtrot during which the dancers may use many quick steps set against the figure called “open box.” It was popular in the larger ballrooms where dance space was not a problem.

CHA CHA: An exciting, syncopated, Latin dance, which originated in the 1950s as a slowed down Mambo, the Cha Cha gathers its personality, character, rhythm, basis, and charm from two major dance sources. It is a derivation of the Mambo through its Latin music, and it is also a stepchild of the Swing, as it is danced to a 1-2-3 step rhythm. The Cha Cha gets its name and character from its distinct repetitive foot rhythm.

RUMBA: The Rumba was originally a courtship, marriage, and street dance that was African in origin. The Rumba met some opposition from society’s upper crust because of the suggestive body and hip movements. The characteristic feature is to take each step without initially placing the weight on that step. Steps are made with a slightly bent knee which, when straightened causes the hips to sway from side to side, in what has come to be known as “Cuban Motion.”

SAMBA: The Samba is a lively Brazilian dance which was first introduced in 1917 and was finally adopted as a ballroom dance by Brazilian society in 1930. It is sometimes referred to as a Samba, Carioca, a Baion or a Batucado. The difference is mainly in the tempo, since the steps in all four dances are very similar. The style is to bounce steadily and smoothly in 2/4 meter. They say that the Samba was introduced in the United States in 1939 by the late Carmen Miranda.

BOLERO: Originally a Spanish dance in 3/4 time, it was changed in Cuba, initially into 2/4 time, then eventually into 4/4. It is now presented as a very slow type of Rumba rhythm. The music is frequently arranged with Spanish vocals and a subtle percussion effect, usually using Congas or Bongos.

MAMBO: The spicy Mambo as we now know it grew out of the Danzon (national music of Cuba), and grasped the imagination of the American dance scene at the close of World War II. Later, fast Swing-Jazz and upbeat Latin music joined in to form the updated and uninhibited Mambo. The Mambo is a spot dance and the steps are quite compact.

Dance DefinitionsMERENGUE: The Merengue is a popular dance of Haiti and the Dominican Republic and is a truly lively Latin dance. There is an old tale about a very brave and famous military officer who was wounded in battle and developed a limp. A celebration dance was given for the great hero returning from the war. Rather than embarrass their hero, who limped on his wounded leg while dancing, all the men present favored their leg as well, & thus the Merengue was born.

SwingEAST COAST SWING: This dance is frequently referred to as Triple Step swing due to the rhythm of the basic triple step. This dance consists of six and eight count patterns, which require a rock step back by both man and woman to begin. It is a circular dance that is danced with a bounce and is very grounded and not high in the legs. This bounce requires the dancer to stay very smooth and not jump around much. East Coast swing is the base for all swing dances.

WEST COAST SWING: This dance consists of six and eight count patterns, which are done in a slot. The woman no longer rocks back as in East Coast swing, but instead she always walks forward on count one. This dance is usually done to medium tempo swing music, frequently slower than East Coast swing. However, those who achieve a high skill level in this dance can and do dance it to faster tempo music. This dance has no bounce and a very smooth feel. Rarely will you see high kicks or moves which require the dancer to leave the floor.

JIVE: This dance is the European version of East Coast swing. Six and eight count patterns make up this dance as in East Coast swing, but it is quite bouncy with very sharp kicks and flicks. Unlike East Coast swing, Jive is danced to faster tempo swing music and is meant for competitive style dancing.

LINDY HOP: This dance came about with the big band era and is danced to fast tempo swing. All Lindy steps are eight count patterns done in a circular fashion with a lot of kicks, flicks, hops, lifts, and drops. It’s been said that this dance gained its name from Charles Lindbergh and his flight to the United States.

SINGLE TIME SWING: Single Time Swing is East Coast except without the triple step. It is basically taught to beginners in order to get them dancing quickly. It is also done when the music is too fast for the East Coast Swing.

JITTERBUG: Jitterbug is Single Time Swing. Single time Swing is East Coast Swing except without the triple step. It is basically taught to beginners in order to get them dancing quickly. It is also done when the music is too fast for the East Coast Swing.

ROCK 'N ROLL: A popular form of Swing or Lindy Hop, Rock ‘n Roll began as a dance done mostly by teenagers who were fans of artists like Elvis Presley and the Beatles.

COLLEGIATE SHAG / BALBOA: Collegiate Shag and Balboa are light dances which can travel quickly across a dance floor. Shag and Balboa steps can easily be incorporated into your Lindy Hop. These are great dances for fast music, and are often used to provide a rest period during long uptempo songs. If you've ever seen cartoons which show dancers pressing their faces and torsos together while their feet move madly underneath them......that's Collegiate Shag.

SHAG: Not to be confused with the Carolina Shag, which is a slow, laid back type of Swing. Shag became popular in the late 30s along with the Jitterbug and Lindy Hop. The dance was done to up-tempo Swing or Foxtrot music, and was instantly recognizable by the flicking of the feet backwards with a pronounced hopping action.

ST. LOUIS SHAG: Fast and Flashy, the St. Louis Shag involves a lot of kicking and is sure to be noticed on the dance floor! This dance originated in St. Louis and is still danced there today. St. Louis Shag is danced to very fast swing music (approximately 45-55 measures per minute) with the leader and follower in a side by side position dancing the mirror opposite of one another. Fun and Aerobic, everyone enjoys St. Louis Shag!

CHARLESTON: The Charleston is the dance we associate with the flamboyant flapper of that era, however, Charleston had been around long before then. There are accounts of people dancing the Charleston in the South as early as 1900. Charleston became a national dance craze when it was danced on Broadway in 1922, and it remained popular until the Blackbottom, a new dance to the same music, hit the scene in 1926. Charleston can be done solo or with a partner. Paul and Sharon’s 20s Charleston video teaches the students solo Charleston and some Blackbottom steps that are arranged into a fun, simple routine.

BACK CHARLESTON: Back Charleston (sometimes referred to as Tandem Charleston) is a dance position in Lindy Hop where the follower stands in front of the leader with her back to him and both leader and follower dance the basic Charleston step starting with the rock step on the left foot. There are many moves and variations that can be danced from this position. Back Charleston is such

a popular part of the Lindy Hop vocabulary that workshops are often devoted to it. Paul & Sharon’s Back Charleston video includes an entrance and exit as well as many fun variations in the dance.

CLUB DANCING: The best way to describe why we list these videos/DVDs under club dancing is the style of the way it is danced. It can be easily done in nightclubs, on smaller dance floors, or on a very crowded dance floor.

NIGHTCLUB TWO-STEP: Nightclub Two- Step, not to be confused with country western two-step, is one of the most practical and versatile social dances ever conceived. It is designed to be used with contemporary soft rock (“Love Song”) music. This type of music is common just about everywhere, nightclubs, radio, etc. The rhythm of the dance is very simple and rarely changes from the 1 & 2 count. This simple romantic dance fills a gap where no other ballroom dance fits. It gives the dancer, either beginning or advanced, the opportunity to express and create without a rigid technique being required. It's attractive, romantic, and a real asset to learn since it will be used often.

ARGENTINE TANGO: The Argentine Tango is a beautiful, simple language of improvisational social dance that has developed over the last century in the City of Buenos Aires. It is a true dance of leading and following. Argentine Tango, with it’s dramatic character and use of leg and foot actions, uses slower music and is more of a spot dance, which makes it easier to dance on smaller floors.

SALSA: The word Salsa means sauce, denoting a “hot” flavor, and is best distinguished from other Latin music styles by defining it as the New York sound developed by Puerto Rican musicians in New York. The dance structure is largely associated with mambo type patterns and has a particular feeling that is associated mainly with the Clave and the Montuno. HUSTLE: The Hustle (Disco) is a member of the Swing family, and is like the West Coast Swing in pattern. It has a distinct flavor, utilizing Disco style music & revived partnerstyle among nightclub dancers in the 70s. Hustle is danced to the contemporary pop dance music of the last 20 years. It is a fast, smooth dance, with the lady spinning almost constantly, while her partner draws her close and sends her away.

American born DONALD JOHNSON, and KASIA KOZAK, hailing from Poland, started their dance careers very early in life. At 13 years old, Kasia responded to a local newspaper advertisement, and Donald started to teach at his mother’s studio in Paducah, Kentucky at 17.

Together, Donald and Kasia were simply sensational; with his experience and her charisma they were definitely a couple to watch out for. They quickly become US Pro Rising Star closed as well

as open National Latin Dance Champions. They were one of the first American couples to win the Blackpool Rising Star Latin. They have become 3rd in the country in the Professional Latin Division. They have also danced in the movie “Dance with Me” with Chayanne and Vanessa Williams.

At the moment they are both national coaches and judges.

TOBY MUNROE is the 2004 & 2005 UCWDC World Champion in the Classic Masters division. In January 2006 Mr. Munroe was voted “Best Male Couples Dance Instructor” at the Star Awards Gala held in Stockholm, Sweden. Toby began his dance career in 1990 after being dragged, kicking & screaming to a Country & Western Dance Festival. Since then he has gone on to become one of the most sought after coaches, choreographers & instructors in the World. His extensive background in dance includes Country, Swing, Hustle, Latin, Ballroom and Salsa. He has won countless titles in Swing, Hustle and on the UCWDC circuit. Toby won his first World Championship title in 2002 for ABC Choreography. He has been nominated for 9 Star Awards, taught at Stanford University and has been featured on the TNN and GAC television networks. Toby is also a four time Colorado State Swing Champion and a UCWDC Master Certified Judge.

HARMONY MUNROE began dancing at the age of 8 and currently co-owns Denver’s premier school for Ballroom and Latin dancing, Colorado Dancesport. She has won numerous titles in American Rhythm, American Smooth, and International Latin dancing. Harmony has been a representative at the World 10 Dance Championships and the World South American Showdance Championships as well as being a finalist at the World Mambo and the World Salsa Championships.

FELIPE TELONA, JR. & CAROLINA ORLOVSKY-TELONA have been devoting their lives together in developing the ability to touch, move, and inspire both audiences and students of all ages thru the art of dance.

Carolina knew from a young age when she began studying ballet under the direction of Ms. Bella Kovarskya that she would grow up to be a dancer. At Eighteen Carolina boarded a bus bound for New York City. She went on to study at the Alvin Aliey American Dance Center, become a recipient of the Richard Ellner Scholarship and apprentice for two consecutive years in Ann Reinking’s Broadway Theatre Project.

However, it was not until she met Felipe in the basement of a Dance Studio in New Jersey did she realize her true calling, the World of Dance Sport. Shortly after their introduction two things began to blossom, both her love for him and her love of Competitive Dance Sport.

A year later, Carolina and Felipe formed a partnership in both marriage and dance. They have since gone on to become 3-time United States Bronze Medalists, World Mambo,

World Salsa Champions, and most recently United States Silver Medalists in the Professional American Rhythm division.

2 Time Open To The World British International Latin Champion, 7 Time Undefeated United States International Latin Champion, Star, International, European & United Kingdom Champion, 3 Time British National Champion CORKY BALLAS is the Creator and Narrator of Dance Vision’s International Style Latin Figures DVDs with Slavik & Karina.

Corky Ballas has been dancing literally since he was a baby, having been reared in a family with diverse talents as entertainers and entrepreneurs. His mother was a great and talented Flamenco dancer who together with Mr. Ballas owned and operated the largest dance studio in the United States (44,000 square feet under one roof). Corky, with all his early talent training however, was as normal as apple pie when it came to the Disco era. This was the point in his life when he discovered that out of everything he had tried through the years, dancing was his greatest love.

In 2008 Corky made a huge splash on the ABC hit television show Dancing With The Stars along with his Oscar winner partner Cloris Leachman.

Corky is a DVIDA National Examiner in all styles and levels.

They either placed or placed highly in every competition they entered since they came to live in the United States. In 2002, Max and Yulia became grand finalists in all prestigious world competitions including Blackpool, U.K. and international championships. In 2005 they began winning major titles all over the world, including WDC World Professional South American

ShowDance Championship for the last two years, 2005 in Italy and 2006 in Moscow, and were also World Finalists at Blackpool and other International Championships. They ranked forth place as a Professional Latin couple in the world ranking awards WDC held in Japan in 2007.

MICHELLE KINKAID is known for her smooth, interactive dance style. She is a three-time U.S. Open Classic Division Winner as well as winner of the U.S. Open Jack & Jill and many other titles including two-time winner of the Phoenix Champion of Champions.

In addition to running her own studio, organizing & directing the Mountain Magic Swing Dance Convention (Lake Tahoe, NV), producing a line of instructional video tapes (in west coast swing, hustle & night club two step), and directing several local events, Michelle travels the USA and Euorpe teaching, competing, and judging on both the Swing and Country circuits.

Michelle is a Feather Award recipient for Best Classic Swing Dancer, was voted “Queen of Swing” at the 1994 National New Year’s Dance Championships in Dallas, and inducted into the California Swing Dance Hall of Fame.

A thriving student medal program can be the cornerstone of your ballroom dance studio. Medal exams are a wonderful opportunity for your students and instructors to push their dancing to new heights. 1.) Each partner takes one belt. The belts are “one size fits all”. One belt has red Velcro, the other gray. It doesn’t matter which belt you wear as long, as they are not the same color Velcro! 2.)
