The Creative Play Therapy Process:Accessing Our Own Creativity & Spontaneityfor Personal Development and Use in Play TherapyDates:July 27-31, 2015 (Monday-Friday)Hours:9:00-12:15 daily CE credits:3 hours per day,15 total

Why is play therapy widely regarded as the most developmentally appropriate form of therapy for children?Play, humor, imagination, spontaneity, and lightness help create emotional safety for children and families, permitting them to work through their problems without fear. Key research in the field of affective neurosciencealso points to the importance of using the seeking and play emotional systems in the brain to offset negativeaffective states (Panksepp). This multimodal workshop uses an experiential and creativity-based approach to encourage therapists toexplore their own playfulness and spontaneity in the service of therapeutic efficacy, all within a light, playfulenvironment. A variety of hands-on, interactive  techniques will be discussed, demonstrated, andexperienced, and participants will create new methods of their own. This workshop is appropriate for mental health practitioners who work with children, adolescents, and familieswith a wide range of difficulties, and who conduct both individual and group interventions. The material andactivities are beneficial for both advanced and novice play therapists.

Therapist self-care is an essential part of being a skilled and effective practitioner. In addition to asource of clinical knowledge and skills, this seminar with Dr. VanFleet is an opportunity for you toexperience self-care and self-development under the guidance of a master play therapist.

Learning Objectives:Participants will be able to…1. Tap into their own playfulness and spontaneity and explore their use to enhance their therapeuticeffectiveness.2. Use humor and lightness effectively with parents and families.3. Describe the 7 affective systems in the brain and how the seeking and play systems can facilitate problem-resolution and well-being.4. Develop new play therapy techniques attuned to their clients’ needs.5. Use materials at hand to expand their therapeutic flexibility for a wide range of therapeutic circumstances.6. Conduct a variety of play therapy techniques for some of the most difficult problems.7. Enhance their competence and confidence in the essential features of play therapy, regardless of specificmodality or setting in which it is used.
