lyn davidgeStoryteller —

Ann Arbor Storytellers’ Guild

Before we had a written language, humans had to rely on gestures, paintings and words to tell their stories. No one knows when the first story was told, but we do know that the Storyteller was a member of early communities.

The art of storytelling is kept alive by folks like Lyn Davidge. After retiring from a career in the University of Michigan library system, Lyn took a class in storytelling and began telling with the Ann Arbor Storytellers’ Guild. Lyn once told a story that consisted of two people who met in the street and didn’t exchange a word. That this story was both entertaining and compelling speaks to Lyn’s talents as a storyteller.

Why is this art important? How do artists increase awareness of storytelling?(Storytelling) has always been about connections. The world is a very disjointed society, and I can’t help but feel that sharing our stories—and what we share about ourselves in our stories—is an important way of reaching out.

The listeners are an important

part of the storytelling process. I have had a variety of insights into myself, into my family…each listener brings something to the storytelling experience and their comments make me realize that there are new thoughts, perspectives, and insights for them as well.

As far as awareness, the (Ann Arbor Storytellers’) Guild is working on that right now! Sometimes, I tell people I’m a storyteller and they don’t understand the concept - they think I go to the library and read to children. However, entities like the Moth (a National Public Radio sponsored event) have brought the idea of storytelling more to the public.

How do you create your stories? What are some things that make a good story? What makes a good told story and a good written story are very much the same thing, but the process is different. I have always liked to write, but that is not how I construct a story. I start by telling the story in my head and then I record it, listen back, and work on it that way. If I can get a version that is close to what I want

to say, I can learn it and it gels when I listen to it.

At a basic level, you want to engage the audience and so you need a clear beginning, middle and end. You also want the story to be about something, although it may not be about the same thing for the teller as the audience. It helps to have a strong element of universality...

Also, it doesn’t have so much to do with delivery, everyone has their own style.

What is your favorite story to tell?My two favorite stories to tell (so far) are called The Picnic and the 12/6 story. The first is about development and the change in a setting from its bucolic beginnings. The 12/6 story is about the Halifax (Nova Scotia) explosion in 1917 and its aftermath.

What are some benefits of being in the Arts Alliance? It has raised my awareness about the arts community in Ann Arbor and given me a wider and more thorough picture of the arts community, its needs, and the economic benefits of having a strong arts community.
