The boat yards are emptying, the marinas are filling up and the Coastal Fisherman has pictures of inshore and offshore fish in it! Thank goodness that winter has finally let go of us and let spring come rolling in. We have had a couple of great parties at the club this spring. I am not sure that the town has ever seen such a quantity of Pirate Costumes or Hawaiian Shirts (or grass skirts… Ron and Drew) in one location. I would like to thank our staff and Auxiliary for all of their hard work for these events. It takes a whole bunch of hard work to make those parties happen, and for some reason people always thank me for it. The truth is that Amanda, Cathy, Mikey, Johnny, Rick and all the rest of our crew are the driving force behind them. Our staff and Auxiliary are awesome and I would hope that all of the members let them know it whenever they get the chance. Next week marks our first tournament of the year. We have changed the format and name of the event this year. We have added Mako and Tuna categories in addition to the Bluefish cate- gory in the newly renamed “Memorial Day Tournament”. The calcuttas are affordable (1600 will get you across the board) and we have some incredible awards coming from a very tal- ented Artist named George Kalwa. The event will still benefit the Catherine and Charles Kratz Memorial Foundation and Scholarship Fund. All of the target species have been caught in decent numbers, so I am hoping for a good turnout for this event. And it benefits a cause as worthy as any. I look forward to seeing you at the sign ups. We also have a couple of new seasonal awards to compete for this year. We will be giving top tuna trophies out by boat size class this year, similar to the top billfish trophies. Also, the Jimmy Jackson Memorial Top Mate award will be given to the top charter boat and top private boat mates. Make sure to fill out those catch reports! There are 2 very important events at the club this weekend. On Sunday night we will be host- ing the Annual Reef Foundation Dinner and Auction. The reef foundation does so much for the fishing off of OC, please come out and support them. On Saturday afternoon we will be gathering at the club to remember Capt Fred Phillips. Capt. Fred passed away over the winter. I had the privilege of knowing Fred since 1987, and the honor of calling him my friend. Capt. Fred was a true gentleman and he will be missed greatly around the docks. I am sure many of you will be out fishing Saturday (I will be too), but if you can, hop off the boat when you get back and poke your head in the club (Fred wouldn’t have minded a little blood or scales on your shirt). I look forward to seeing you all out on the ocean, or at the bar afterwards! Franky PS- please share fishing stories or some OC fishing memories with us and we will put them in future issues of the Marlin Bill. [email protected] or [email protected]

  • First Mako of the season in March!!

The first Mako of the Ocean City fishing season was caught yesterday by Andy Smelter on board Captain Terry Layton’s ‘Non-Typical’ out of Ocean City. There has been a piece of water in the Baltimore canyon that has looked very appealing over the last few weeks and Captain Terry, along with Jimmy Hughes (current MD State record holder for the Mako), Kevin McCabe, Dave Pederson and angler Andy Smelter, ventured out yesterday to give it a shot.

They caught the Mako in 65 degree water in 200 fathoms in the Baltimore canyon and report water as warm as 72 degrees and lots of life out there. They had one other mystery bite.

The Mako was estimated at 100 pounds and was caught on a trolled horse ballyhoo.

Congratulations to angler Andy Smelter, Captain Terry and the rest of the crew of the ‘Non-Typical’!!

  • Celebration of Life information for Capt. Fred Phillips

  • The Ocean City Marlin Club Auxiliary is the right arm of the Ocean City Marlin Club. Our purpose is to assist in any functions and charitable causes of the Ocean City Marlin Club. A group of

over forty (40) have worked very hard to raise monies for local scholarships and other charities over the years.

This year, our group of Auxiliary Members with the help and support of both the community and Ocean City Marlin Club affiliates are presenting scholarships to four (4) qualified Worcester County high

school students in the amount of $5,000 each, totaling $20,000.00!!

Presently, our largest fundraiser is our Annual Jewelry and Boutique Show (open to the public) on Au-gust 6, however, we have many projects throughout the year: ranging from silent auctions to yard and

bake sales to 50/50, picture and basket(s) of cheer raffles to help raise money for the OCMC Scholarship Fund & Club beautification.

This past Saturday, May 9th we made $262.25 from the bake sale, $152.00 off the hot dog sale, & Tami & Mark Radcliffe donated $565.00 from the Nautical Flea Market sales to the Auxiliary. The hot dog

sale went to Club beautification & the other monies went towards the Scholarship Fund.

We also help with bulk mailings, apparel organization, monthly dinners, all eight annual OC Marlin Club sponsored Fishing Tournaments, and other private event style functions. We take direction from

our President, Franky Pettolina and the Board of the Ocean City Marlin Club & we meet monthly upstairs in the OCMC Clubhouse.

If interested, please email [email protected] or visit our website www.ocmarlinclub.com to peruse our bi-laws and Auxiliary membership application on-line.

Thank you — Cathy Donovan, President of the OCMC Auxiliary
