Everyone has favorite foods. Such staples in one’s diet are familiar, often referred to as comfort food. There is nothing wrong with the tried and true, but this fare is nothing really new…

Now take a moment and try to recall when you tasted something for the very first time. Maybe it was seafood, a French pastry, Chinese, Tai or even cotton candy. How wonderful to have the chance to discover new flavors that stir the palate.

Vacationing in a place that is a family tradition has special meaning and memories tied to past years. However, visiting a new locale such as a secluded cabin, the ocean, the mountains, or even another country is an altogether different encounter. Each of these sites promises opportunities for sights and sounds that are distinctive, expanding the scope of our experience. Perhaps this is a metaphor for life. There is room for both consistency and variation, as each brings something pleasing to the table.

In programming, I have strived for both characteristics. Again this season, several events are linked as featuring one particular instrument. This pattern now turns to a more curious device, the accordion. Roots of a free vibrating reed based instrument

go back perhaps as far as 3000 BC in Chinese culture. Germany is the home of the first true accordion in 1822. Celtic, Klezmer, Polka and other world music genres are noticeably influenced by this unique musical contraption.

This year, I hope that you will find performances at Emens Auditorium that are reminiscent while others might be a new cultural excursion for you. The Emens presents at Pruis Hall series is growing in popularity. If you have not yet had occasion previously, I hope you will join us for one of these performances in the coming year.

From the Cajun cadence of the Pine Leaf Boys, to ventriloquist Lynn Trefzger, and the antics of the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain or the dramatic depiction of Medal of Honor personalities in Beyond Glory to the indescribably delightful Blue Man Group. We are confident that the 15-16 Emens Auditorium season fully embodies something altogether different.

Emens Auditorium is located in the heart of the campus on Riverside Avenue. The auditorium seats 3,309 and hosts a variety of performing arts events throughout the season.

Pruis Hall is situated just off of Woodworth Drive next to Bracken Library. This 640-seat venue provides an intimate setting for musical performances and is used to host a variety of special events throughout the school year.

Sursa Hall is located in the Music Instruction Building at the intersection of Riverside and McKinley. The hall seats 600 and features a world-class pipe organ built by the Goulding & Wood Company.

Emens Auditorium 50th Anniversary CampaignSince opening in 1964, the John R. Emens College-Community Auditorium on Ball State’s campus has served as a preeminent community and university main stage, where world-class artists, entertainers and lectures perform and life events, such as graduations, concerts, recitals, occur. Proposed improvements will enhance the Emens experience for future audiences. A campaign is underway to fund the enhancements with gifts from individuals, corporations and foundations, who recognize the importance of having a facility such as Emens in Delaware County. Doktor Kaboom will explore the fundamentals of electrical energy and the history of humanity’s adventures into its potential. Shadows of the 60’s: Music of Motown

Revering the tremendous legacy of The Four Tops, Temptations and Supremes, Shadows of the 60’s brings to life these songs that span decades. Meticulous attention to style is taken to reproduce the music, note for note and in the original keys and arrangements. This night of musical memories highlights the hits of three of Motown’s most prominent artists. This true rendition concludes with a grand finale featuring the music of Smokey Robinson, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Gladys Knight, Martha Reeves, Junior Walker, and more!

This enchanting musical experience features Celtic Woman performing a treasure chest of traditional Irish standards, classical favorites and contemporary pop songs, in the group’s distinctive signature style. The 10th Anniversary World Tour features four sublimely gifted Irish women - three angelic vocalists and a dazzling Celtic violinist - with a full band, plus the Aontas Choir, bagpipers, and Irish dancers all under the direction of Emmy®-nominated music producer David Downes.

Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain Oct. 7 · 7:30pm

The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain is a group of all-singing, all-strumming Ukulele players, using instruments bought with loose change, which believes that all genres of music are available for reinterpretation, as long as they are played on the Ukulele. A concert by the Ukulele Orchestra is a funny, virtuosic, twanging, awesome, foot-stomping obituary of rock-n-roll and melodious light entertainment featuring only the “bonsai guitar” and a menagerie of voices in a collision of post-punk performance and toe-tapping oldies.

Eisenhower Dance: 25 in the 25th Tour

Eisenhower Dance celebrates its silver anniversary with a spectacular touring production! With the goal of traveling to 25 cities during its 25th year, the Company will celebrate with an exciting production of breathtaking choreography. The program will include new creations by internationally-recognized choreographers, such as Ron de Jesus, Gina Patterson, Edgar Zendejas and artistic director Laurie Eisenhower, among others. 25 in the 25th highlights what Eisenhower Dance does best---showcase stunning dancers in exhilarating choreography!

Cirque Alfonse: Timber! Oct. 23 · 7:30pmdirector’s pick | bsu family weekend

You can almost smell the fresh-cut pine logs and the sweat of lumberjacks as you watch them jiving to a traditional folk soundtrack. The young circus troupe hails from a small town called Saint-Alphonse-Rodriguez and they have clearly drawn upon their country roots. The artists perform incredible feats of aerial acrobatics that are directly inspired by the natural raw materials of the forest and the equipment used on the farm.

U.S. Navy Commodores Nov. 9 · 7:30pmJazz is America’s music and the U.S. Navy Band Commodores, the Navy’s premier jazz ensemble, have been performing the very best of big band jazz for the Navy and the nation for over 40 years. Formed in 1969, this 18-member group continues the jazz big band legacy with some of the finest musicians in the world.

The pop culture phenomenon of Flashdance is now live on stage. With electrifying dance at its core, Flashdance: The Musical tells the inspiring and unforgettable story of Alex Owens, a Pittsburgh steel mill welder by day and a bar dancer by night with dreams of one day becoming a professional performer. When romance with her steel mill boss threatens to complicate her ambitions, Alex learns the meaning of love and its power to fuel the pursuit of her dream.

America’s Hometown Band Christmas

Celebrate the spirit of Christmas with this year’s production program of our America’s Hometown Band, a community volunteer band, led by Roger McConnell, music director. This year’s performance will highlight the Jazz Band and feature special guest and Wizard of the Xylophone, David Robbins. The Band includes a roster of BSU and East Central Indiana connected performers, and will play in the comfortable and warm festive holiday setting of Emens Auditorium.

Accordion Virtuosi of Russia

Accordion Virtuosi of Russia was founded in 1943, during the Leningrad siege by Professor Pavel Smirnov. Throughout history, they have toured extensively in more than 20 countries and were invited to be part of the cultural program for the Olympic Games in Munich in 1972, Montreal in 1976, and Moscow in 1980. The outstanding ensemble’s repertoire ranges from folk music to arrangements of rock songs and continues to astound audiences around the world.

Moscow Festival Ballet: Sleeping Beauty Mar. 21 · 7:30pm

The Sleeping Beauty is often considered the finest achievement of the Classical ballet. It is a grandiose and refined blending of the traditional mime, expressive pas d’action and spectacular divertissements in a lavish theatrical setting. Tchaikovsky was delighted with the invitation to write the music for a ballet based on Charles Perrault’s well-known fairy tale, replete with a king and queen, fairies both good and evil, a beautiful princess and dream prince, magical stage effects, and courtly splendor.

PigPen Theatre Co. Sept. 17 · 7:30pm

PigPen Theatre Co. began creating their unique brand of music, film, and theatre as freshmen at the Carnegie Mellon School of Drama in 2007. Their debut indie-folk album, “Bremen”, was named #10 album of the year in The Huffington Post’s 2012 Grammy preview. Their follow up EP, “The Way I’m Running”, was premiered by American Songwriter and released on October 8th, 2013.

Pine Leaf Boys Nov. 5 · 7:30pm

Louisiana’s finest, the four-time Grammy-nominated Pine Leaf Boys have made a name for presenting their own inimitable brand of Cajun music with youthful exuberance. Hailing from southwest Louisiana, the Pine Leaf Boys, known for their wild shows and thoughtful arrangements, have breathed new life into Cajun music, reviving ancient songs and bringing them to the bandstand.

Frank Vignola & Vinny Raniolo Jan. 21 · 7:30pm

Frank Vignola and Vinny Raniolo have been touring together as a guitar duo for nearly four years. Frank is an extraordinary guitarist with a jaw-dropping technique that explains why the New York Times deemed him “one of the brightest…stars of the guitar.” Vinny is best known for his accompanying skills and is a very high demand rhythm guitarist.

Comedy Ventriloquist: Lynn Trefzger Oct. 29 · 7:30pm

For over 30 years, Lynn Trefzger has given life to a trunk full of comical characters. Performing for audiences worldwide, Lynn’s vocal illusion talents, introduce a drunken and lovable camel, a grumpy old man, a feisty little girl, and even some audience members brought up for the action! Lynn’s off-the-wall audience interplay is riotously funny, no two shows are alike! Her performances are tailored for both family and adult audiences.

In the last dozen years, no traditional Irish band has had a wider impact on audiences

and music lovers throughout the world than Altan. They have moved audiences

from Donegal to Tokyo to Seattle with their heartwarming, dynamic live performances

and with their exquisitely produced, award-winning recordings that range from the most touching old Irish songs to hard-

hitting reels and jigs.

A trip that began in a van in 1992, with the three musicians playing gigs

anywhere in Australia that would have them, has led The Waifs to multiple ARIA awards, platinum albums and

successful tours across the world. The Australian folk rock band’s 2002 radio

hit. “London Still” was followed by a tour with Bob Dylan and ARIA Awards including Best Independent, and Best

Blues And Roots Release.

18 South’s music is created by a wide array of influences. The organic and

earthy quality of their sound rings with overtones of Blues, Bluegrass, Jazz and Gospel. It lends itself perfectly to their stripped down acoustic approach that

is truly “Americana”. The Band member résumé’s read like an Encyclopedia of

Musical History and once you see them live, you’ll know why they are individually some the most well respected musicians

on the scene today.

Carrie Newcomer Apr. 12 · 7:30pm

Carrie Newcomer has been described as “a soaring songstress” by Billboard, a “prairie mystic” by the Boston Globe. One of the definitive voices of the heartland and progressive spirituality, Newcomer has the ability for sharp observation of the world. Newcomer has attracted a devoted following with her warm voice, exquisite melodies, and an irreverent yet spiritual view of the world. As in the work of poets Mary Oliver and Wendell Berry, Newcomer’s songs are based in the ordinary, and infused with images from the natural world.

Eric Bibb String Band Feb. 9 · 7:30pm

Fresh from winning the Acoustic Artist of the Year award from the Blues Foundation

in Memphis, Eric Bibb brings his stellar new band to the stage. Featuring multi-

instrumentalist Dirk Powell (fiddle, banjo, Cajun accordion, vocals), Creole fiddler

Cedric Watson and harmonica wizard Grant Dermody, this new band draws from a deep

well of American roots music influences, from pre-war blues and early string band

music to contemporary Americana.

Tickets may be purchased in person at the Emens box office, via mail using the order form, by phone at (800) 745-3000, or online at www.ticketmaster.com. Orders processed less than seven days prior to a performance will be held at the box office.

All dates, times, prices and events are firm at the time of publication. Due to the nature of performing arts contractual agreements, program dates, times, and prices are subject to change and/or cancellation.

Tickets for Children: Regardless of age, everyone in attendance must have a ticket, sit in a seat, and be able to sit quietly throughout the performance. Not all performances are appropriate for children. If you are unsure, ask a box office representative prior to purchasing if the event is appropriate for your child. Out of respect to all patrons, we discourage bringing infants to any performance.

Refunds: Refunds are given only in the case of event cancellation or date change. Refunds are made to the original purchaser only. Handling fees are not refundable. If you find you are unable to attend an event consider the following options: (1) Share your tickets with a friend or co-worker, (2) Give your tickets to the Muncie Center for the Arts for distribution among those who are less fortunate and would otherwise be unable to attend. Lost Tickets: Emens box office can reprint lost tickets for the original ticket purchaser. A $5 transaction fee will be assessed.

Curtain Times: Curtain times vary. Please check your tickets for start times. Our staff makes every effort to open lobby doors at least thirty minutes prior to performances.

Late Seating: According to artist contractual agreements, patrons who arrive late will be asked to wait in the lobby and will be seated at the first appropriate break in the program. We make every attempt to begin each performance on time.

Special Accommodations: Please call the Emens box office to order tickets if you have special needs. Emens Auditorium is equipped with an accessible elevator for our mobility-impaired patrons. Wheelchair accessible seating is located throughout the auditorium. Booster seats are available for children at the box office. For our hearing-impaired patrons we offer infrared listening systems at the box office. Please alert the box office as to any special needs at least two weeks prior to an event.

Restrooms: Facilities are located on the balcony and lower levels at Emens Aditorium. Restrooms are also located in the adjacent buildings and are accessible at intermission only.

Recording Devices, Cameras and Cell Phones: Due to contractual agreements and as a courtesy to those around you, use of electronic equipment is not permitted in the auditorium. Please be sure to silence cell phones and pagers prior to the start of performances.

Parking: There are parking garages located behind Emens and across the street from the Auditorium behind the Music Instruction Building. As the Emens parking structure fills up quickly, we strongly recommend that you use the garage located behind the Music Instruction Building just off Ashland Avenue. Free shuttle service is available for all Artist Series events. Parking for shuttle service is located just off of McKinley Avenue and Gilbert Street in the yellow lots, as well as the garage. The shuttle runs one hour prior to each performance and resumes immediately following. Drop-off service is allowed for patrons unable to walk long distances. Handicap parking is located along the east drive adjacent to Emens and in the Emens and Ashland Avenue garages.
