Dear Neighbor, Why did you open this brochure? Maybe it’s because you have previously enjoyed or been challenged by attending a performance? Or because you are an actor or musician yourself? Or maybe you know a student or faculty member in the School and want to see what we are up to? Or perhaps you care about someone who is invested in the performing arts and want to share about the vast array of work we do? In any case, I am willing to bet that the reason you opened this brochure had something to do with both personal transformation and connections to other people. Recently I returned from a trip to New York where I saw some wonderful Tony Award winning plays and I thought “Why does this feel so good?” It occurred to me that in this age of distributed education, individualized news streams and entertainment choices, it is so rare that a large group of people sits together to think and feel as one. Leo Tolstoy, in his essay What is Art, said, “. . . it is a means of union among men, joining them together in the same feelings, and indispensable for the life and progress toward well-being of individuals and of humanity.” In the audience of a screening, a concert, or a play we sit together facing the same direction and wrestle with our humanity together. It feels good. It feels important. We take time to notice each other and to pay attention to ideas and events that take us beyond our familiar paths. The creation of art, then, is a uniquely human enterprise. We invite you to join with us to vitalize the education of our talented and creative students. Thomas Merton in No Man is An Island wrote, “Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time.” For our 2015-16 season, the 350 students learning how to communicate in the performing and cinematic arts, our 65 faculty and staff, the hundreds of non-majors who participate in our productions and ensembles, and our esteemed guest artists all join me in inviting you to find yourself and lose yourself with us! Thank you for opening this brochure. I hope this small action is a first step of your journey into our season. Whether you join us for hilarious comedy and tragedy in our theatres, the work of our faculty composers sparkling through the Music on Mondays series, the celebration of our new Steinway in the Squires Recital Salon, cinema screenings, or the work of one of our outstanding ensembles – I know that you will experience something new both in yourself and your community. That is the power of art – to make the invisible threads that bind us visible. Celebrate and grow with us!

OCT. 5-10 | 7:30 PM; OCT. 11 | 2:00 PMTheatre 101 | $12 general | $10 senior/student

Middle-aged siblings Vanya and Sonia have never worked a day in their lives. They share a home in Bucks County, PA, where they bicker and complain about the circumstances of their lives. Suddenly, their movie-star sister, Masha, who has kept the household running for years, swoops in with her new boy toy, Spike. Old resentments flare up, eventually leading to threats to sell the house. Also on the scene are sassy maid Cassandra, who can predict the future, and a lovely young aspiring actress named Nina, whose prettiness somewhat worries the imperious Masha. When the family attends a costume party at the old Dorothy Parker house dressed as Snow White and some of the dwarfs, things start to get out of hand. Winner of the 2013 Tony Award for best play.

Winner of the 2008 Tony Award for Best Revival, this 1960’s French farce adapted for the English-speaking stage features self-styled Parisian lothario Bernard, who has Italian, German, and American fiancées, each a beautiful airline hostess with frequent “layovers.” He keeps “one up, one down, and one pending” until unexpected schedule changes bring all three to Paris and Bernard’s apartment at the same time.

“This latest edition of a play named for an aircraft soars right out of its time zone and into some unpolluted stratosphere of classic physical comedy. Propelled by the same gusty spirit that animated Commedia dell’Arte and the silent films of Keaton, Chaplin and Lloyd, [this] may be earthy, but it’s seldom earthbound.” - The New York Times

An eclectic group of six mid-pubescents vie for the spelling championship of a lifetime. While candidly disclosing hilarious and touching stories from their home life, the tweens spell their way through a series of [potentially made-up] words hoping to never hear the soul-crushing, pout-inducing, life un-affirming “ding” of the bell that signals a spelling mistake. Six spellers enter; one speller leaves! At least the losers get a juice box.
