LA Latin I - Introduction to Classical Latin

For beginning (high school) students, this course is a year-long study based on the college text by Frederick Wheelock. Students are introduced to basic grammar and vocabulary, the declension system, the concepts of agreement between nouns, adjectives, and pronouns, the personal endings, and the tense designations of verbs. Exercises and drills present students with quotes and short readings from classical authors as well as explanatory notes about classical antiquity. Because a large percentage of English vocabulary is derived from Latin roots, this course is very helpful in building vocabulary skills and providing insight regarding special terms. Depending upon progress, students will complete the first half of the Wheelock text (6th edition) TH 9:00-10:30 High School Full Year Ambrose House

LA Latin II - Advanced Latin Grammar

Continuing studies in Wheelock's Latin, this course focuses on advanced grammar constructions, including the passive voice, the perfect tenses, the subjective, participles, and complex sentence construction. Longer readings for translation acquaint students with the thought of classical authors like Cicero, Horace, and Julius Caesar. Generally, students complete most of the grammar sections in this text. Other OT1IWH004 Debate

Debate offers an excellent avenue to learn speaking, research, writing, critical thinking, and argumentation. This class takes a highly practical approach. We will not be involved in any formal debate competitions, but we will study and use the public forum method of debate. Public forum debate focuses on developing debaters who can persuade any audience to support a particular position through a series of back and forth speeches that mimic the real world debates on television with pundits and politicians. Students will learn to persuade not only through logic and reason but also through convincing appeals to emotions and ethics. In today’s world, a well-planned emotional approach will give logic its most powerful impact. By researching both sides of an issue, students will know how to support their own beliefs in the real world by thoroughly understanding the other side. OT Inside Geography

Have you ever thought about how the land impacts recreation, roads, buildings, weather, and the food we eat every day? Why do we share so much information through maps, anyway? Landforms influence economy and trade, culture & language, and travel & infrastructure. Let's not just read about it or talk about. Let's get our hands on it and do it. Career Cameos are part of every unit as we meet those who use geography skills every day. Students will evaluate which graphic organizer, map, or model explains data for an intended audience. We will examine how what we know about the land around us impacts opinions about land use regulations. Student directed research and displays will be showcased through their geography club and/or geography fair. This applied geography class goes beyond a survey or rote memorization and considers how geography impacts our everyday world. W 11:30-2:00 Mid & High School Full Year Bedford

OT Practical Public Speaking

Skillful public speaking is a great predictor of success vocationally and relationally. This class will teach the core principles of public speaking as well as prepare students for “real situations” in life where effective public speaking is needed. Students will learn how to make the following speeches: toast at a reception, personal introduction, award presentation, impromptu, informative, demonstration, persuasive, and others. Students will learn how to organize, outline, and deliver speeches, learning that preparation and experience are the keys to speaking with confidence. Some people are more gifted at public speaking, but everyone is created with the ability to communicate clearly and effectively if properly trained. Students will be graded mainly on the thoroughness of their preparation and their ability to be clear and poised. A speech syllabus will be given to each student for use in class and beyond. The importance of nonverbal communication (eyes, pacing, pauses, facial expression, etc.) will also be emphasized. Specific help will be provided to combat and prevent “stage fright.” This will be “participating” class that will reap lifelong benefits. SC The Sustainable Farm and Holistic Health Practices

Within this course, students will explore a diverse array of self-sustainability skills. We will learn with hands on involvement in organic gardening/farming techniques such as; four season food production in passive solar hoop-houses (poly tunnels), seeding, planting, and care of plants. By utilizing perennial food plants, we can limit the work that we put in, along with harm to the environment, by reducing fossil fuels and alleviating eroded soils. Throughout the course we will also be learning about health and nutrition and how it is connected with producing your own food, and how plants can be medicine in addition to food. Holistic and preventative medicine will be discussed and practiced throughout the term. We will cover healthy exercise, stretching, and yoga, along with eating a healthful diet, hydration, and natural remedies to common ailments. We will discuss easy to grow herbs that are perennial, outdoors in our climate, and ways to use them to prevent or treat common health issues. Woven throughout the class will be a common sense to entrepreneurship, self- sufficiency, and inter-dependency with our environment. VA Drama - Performance

Interpretive movement is simply communication through rehearsed physical expression. The phrase may sound intimidating at first, but it need not be. Even simple routines can amplify, clarify, and beautify a thought. Physical expression of ideas is a natural and basic concept. Some people’s hands are animated as they speak; others engage their whole bodies when telling a story; in sign language, subtle nuances in conversation are conveyed through the position of the hands, body language, and facial expressions. Stories will come to life as students implement many ways of physical expression including hand signs, dowel rods, fabric, sign language, and drama to interpret lyrics and stories. Puppets Students of any age can bring a puppet to life and attribute personalities, characteristics, attitudes, and more! Puppets can be anything or anyone! They can be a best friend, a sibling, a teacher, or even a pet. It does not really matter because the world students create with puppets is entirely their own, a world without boundaries that they can freely explore. When used in the classroom, these puppets can help boost creativity and stimulate kids’ imaginations at all ages. Puppets will be used to tell stories, act out dramas, and to interpret songs. This is a performance class. Throughout the year, we will be performing mini skits for our Partnership families as well as scheduling outside performances for nursing homes, elementary schools, or other public opportunities. These scheduled performances will be based on the enrolled families availabilities and desires. This class can be taken separately based on your student’s desires, however, it is a great compliment to the “Drama – Creative Works” class where the student can create their own puppet to use in performances. Shmoop

Shmoop has been a digital publishing company with a point of view. Our teaching method revolves around the basic idea that learning is tough—so we carry gallons of academic WD-40 to squirt on the tracks whenever we can. And as an added bonus, we're funny. At least we like to think so. Our free Learning Guides, Online Courses, College Readiness Prep, and Test Prep balance a teen-friendly, approachable style with academically rigorous materials to help students understand why they should care. We also give students an honest look into life after high school. Our Careers page is written by real, studly Oil Rig Drillers, Delta Force Captains, and Marine Biologists, while our College 101 section tells students what college might actually look, feel, and smell like. Thousands of schools around the world use Shmoop as part of their curriculum, and the company has also been honored by the Interwebs: three times by the Webby Awards and Scholastic Administrator Magazine ("Best in Tech")."
