C hoosing a new physician can be very stressful, especially when you are not feeling your best. Recently, I found myself on the search for a

couple new doctors and there is no easy decision. Upon being discharged from my hospital stay, I was given instructions to see a Gastroenterologist and a Nephrologist. I was not provided with a specific doctor’s name and number, or an explanation of what these doctors did. I was simply instructed by the nurse to Google it. If you are anything like me, Google is not the answer you are looking for.

If you answer “no” to any of these questions, you may want to keep looking. Ask for recommendations from friends, family or co-workers. If they are happy with the care they are receiving, it would be worth you checking into. We only get one life and taking care of our health is vital to maintaining that life. Make sure that you are getting your necessary check-ups for all aspects of your health: Dental, Vision, Mental and Physical. You will be glad you did!

The flu is a respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. On average, between 5 and 20 percent of the U.S. population get the flu each year and more than 200,000 people are hospitalized for complications associated with the flu. The best way to prevent the flu is to get a flu vaccine each year. This season, manufacturers have projected they will provide between 171 to 179 million doses of vaccine for the U.S. market. Flu activity most commonly peaks between December and February.

SIGNS & SYMPTOMSFlu symptoms range from mild to severe. People often feel some or all of these signs and symptoms:

• Fever* or feeling feverish/chills• Cough• Sore throat• Runny or stuffy nose• Muscle or body aches• Headaches• Fatigue • Some people may have vomiting and diarrhea, though this is more common in children than adults.

*Not everyone with flu will have a fever.

HOW DOES THE FLU SPREAD?Most experts believe the flu viruses spread mainly by droplets made when infected people cough, sneeze or talk. These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby. Less often, a person might also get flu by touching a surface or object that has flu virus on it and then touching their own mouth, eyes or possibly their nose.

HOW DO I INFECT OTHERS?You may be able to pass on the flu to someone else before you know you are sick, as well as while you are sick. Most healthy adults may be able to infect others beginning 1 day before symptoms develop and up to 5 to 7 days after becoming sick.

WHO IS AT RISK?Certain people are at greater risk for serious complications if they get the flu. This includes older people, young children, pregnant women and people with certain health conditions such as asthma, diabetes or heart disease.

CAN THE FLU BE TREATED?In some cases, antiviral drugs can be prescribed to treat flu. Studies show that antiviral drugs work best for treatment when they are started within two days of getting sick. However, starting them later can still be helpful, especially for people at higher risk for flu-related complications.

J im was lonely. His wife had passed six years ago and although he two grown kids, one lived out of town and the other was busy with life. The last thing he wanted to do was burden them.

Jim had maintained his independence and lived alone. He enjoyed escaping from a too-quiet house and going out once in a while. He liked to visit parks, go to the store, and after many years alone, getting a haircut felt like an adventure. The outings felt like his last connection with the outside world. Until one day last September. He ventured to Maymont to enjoy some late summer sunshine. He sat in the grass on a blanket that his wife and he used to bring on their outings. Jim was enjoying the warm sun on his face and remembering times with his wife as he drifted off into an afternoon nap.When Jim woke, he realized he felt a bit “fuzzy” and wasn’t 100% sure where he was. He decided it was best to head back to his apartment. About half way home, he realized he didn’t know where he was. The streets didn’t look familiar and the daylight was fading fast. He found what he thought was his Son’s number and called but didn’t get an answer. He tried his daughter; no answer. He pulled over and asked someone where he was. He looked confused enough to cause concern because soon enough, a policeman was called.Jim was taken home and tucked into bed. He later awoke feeling lost and afraid. This was the beginning of “fuzzy moments”. It was a matter of time before the kids decided his car keys needed confiscating and his little adventures – his last connection – were taken away.Days came and went and his apartment felt like a prison. One evening in November, his daughter said she had seen a TV commercial for a local care company which might be able to provide him some companionship.
