2015-16 ALLEGHENY COLLEGE GOLF

Jeff Groff is in his 31st year at Allegheny and 15th as the head golf coach. He led his Gator men’s squad to the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament in each of his first five seasons -- part of a 30-year streak by the program, and has continued to keep Allegheny at the top of the national and regional rankings. Groff, who has served as head coach of the women’s program since its inception in 2006, has guided the Gators to

unprecedented heights. The Gators qualified for the NCAA Division III Championships in their first seven years as a varsity program, producing six top-10 finishes. In 2006, Groff became just the fifth coach in NCAA history to lead both the men’s and women’s teams to the NCAA Championships in the same year, while both teams also bagged a top-10 finish that season.

Groff’s 2014-15 Gator men’s squad finished fifth or better in eight of their 10 events, including a first-place finish at the competitive IUP Spadafora Invitational against a field of Division II competitors, and a close third-place finish at the 2015 NCAC Championship Series. Junior Jimmy Lasher finished fourth at the conference championship to earn All-NCAC accolades, while going on to earn GCAA/PING All-Region honors. The Allegheny women saw a pair of players earn All-NCAC honors in Alex Grimaldis and Lauren Wind, while the team turned in three top-three finishes.

In 2013-14, senior Oliver White was named the NCAC Player of the Year, before going on to earn GCAA/PING All-America for the third consecutive season, and Srixon All-American Scholar recognition for the second straight year. The Gator men won a pair of tourney titles in ‘13-14, including Carnegie Mellon’s Edward Jones Shootout, and the Kenyon BSN Fall Invitational. The 2013-14 Allegheny women’s team also earned two tournament titles, including the Ohio Wesleyan Fall Invitational and the Mercyhurst Spring Invite, while senior Miranda Santucci became the first player in team history to earn First Team All-NCAC honors in three consecutive seasons.

In 2013, both teams fared well, garnering a score of individual honors. In addition to capturing the team title at the Rosencrans-Maurer Invitational, hosted by Wittenberg, the Gator men turned in four second-place team finishes. Individually, senior Patrick Fritz and junior Oliver White each earned First Team All-North Coast Athletic Conference laurels, after finishing fourth and fifth, respectively, at the conference championships. White went on to earn his second career PING All-America honor, while he was also named a GCAA/Cleveland Golf-Sirixon Scholar All-American, after posting a stroke average of 74.2, fourth best in program history. The Gator women captured a trio of team invitational titles, as they took first as the Allegheny Invitational, the Capital Invitational, and the Gannon Invitational. The team finished third at the rugged NCAC Championships, with three golfers earning All-NCAC laurels. Junior Miranda Santucci earned First Team All-NCAC honors for a second consecutive year, finishing fourth at the conference championship with a four-round total of 320, while she was also named to the WGCA All-Scholar Team. Senior Liz Blyth earned her third All-NCAC honor, and second First Team nod, after taking fifth, while junior Sarah Vorder Bruegge finished 11th to earn Second Team All-NCAC recognition.

In 2012, both squads excelled, although the women shined down the stretch as they rallied to finish ninth at the NCAA Championships following a victory over national runner-up DePauw at the second event of the NCAC Championship Series. The men finished fifth in the NCAC Championship Series, although the team picked up back-to-back victories late in the spring for the program’s first team titles in two years.

The women’s squad earned its 2011 NCAA bid following another outstanding campaign in which it captured six tournament titles, including the inaugural North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) Championship. The Gators, who were ranked int he top-20 nationally throughout the season, captured their first league title by an astounding 98 strokes in four rounds of play. Individually, Hannah Schonau-Taylor secured medalist honors en route to NCAC Player of the Year, while Groff picked up the first NCAC Coach of the Year award on the women’s side. Under Groff’s tutelage, all five Allegheny players competing at the championships earned All-Conference honors. The team capped the season with a sixth-place finish at the NCAA Division III Championships, their highest finish at the national tournament in team history.

During Groff’s tenure, seven Allegheny golfers have combined to earn a total of 13 All-America honors. Ben Rathfon, a 2006 graduate, was just the third player in program history to earn four All-America honors, while Oliver White earned three straight All-America plaudits between 2012-14. Additionally, Liz Blyth became the first Allegheny women’s golfer to earn the honor, doing so as a freshman in 2010, before following it up with a repeat performance a season later.

In 2004, Groff was named the Easton Golf Pride Mid-Atlantic Regional Coach of the Year (men) as he led the Gators to wins at both the fall and spring Mid-Atlantic Regional Tournaments. The following season, he picked up his first of three NCAC Coach of the Year honors as the squad won six events and captured runner-up at the conference championship. In 2008, Groff was also the National Golf Coaches Association East Region Coach of the Year (women), while earning GCAA Mid-Atlantic Region Coach of the Year for the men a season later. Groff is a 1983 graduate of Millersville University, where he played baseball and was an Academic All-American outfielder as a senior. He earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from his alma mater and went on to earn his master’s in sports administration from Kent State University in 1985.

He has been a member of the NGCA Division III Awards Committee, the NGCA East Region Advisory Committee and the Golf Coaches Association of America Mid-Atlantic Regional Committee, where he served as the chairperson and voting member of the Golf World/Nike Golf Coaches Poll for several years. He currently serves as the NCAC’s representative on the NCAA Great Lakes Regional Advisory Committee. A native of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, Groff attended Penn Manor High School, where he played varsity soccer, basketball and baseball. He also is an avid golfer and a student of the game. Groff is married to the former Chris Binnie, a 1989 Allegheny graduate, and they reside in nearby Cambridge Springs.

During her career as a student-athlete at Allegheny, Sorensen was part of four squads that qualified for the NCAA Division-III National Championship, including the 2011-12 squad that made its seventh consecutive trip to Nationals, where it finished ninth with a school-record 72-hole performance. Sorensen was also a member of the 2010-11 squad that won the inaugural North Coast Athletic Conference women’s championship by a whopping 98 strokes. TIM MCCORDTim McCord was a 34 -year physical education instructor in the Titusville Area School District until his 2012 retirement. In addition to his teaching duties, McCord was the Health and Physical Education Department Chair as well as the Director of the Titusville PE4life Academy Training Center. He was named the 2003 PSAHPERD Health Educator of the Year, 2007 President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports Community Leadership Award winner and 2012 PSAHPERD Coach of the Year in the state of Pennsylvania.

McCord served as a coach in the Titusville school system his entire career, until retiring from the varsity

golf coach position in 2014. He has served as an assistant coach for both boys and girls basketball and girls track and field, five years as the varsity boys basketball coach, and 32 seasons at the helm of the golf program.

During his tenure as varsity golf coach, the Rockets captured 13 league/region championships, including eight straight from 2007-14. In addition, the Rockets also won two District X Team Championships and two PIAA Sub-regional Championships ,giving the Titusville Rockets the opportunity to twice participate in the PIAA State Team Championships. Over 120 Titusville golfers qualified for the District X tournament with eight Rockets moving forward to the PIAA State tournament under McCord’s leadership. He also was the coach in 2013 when his son Matt became the first male District X Individual Champion in Titusville High School history.

Many Rocket golfers who played for McCord have used their high school experience as a stepping stone into the golf profession. He has had the honor of coaching a high school golfer who later went on to capture the NCAA Division III Championship (presently the Head Professional at Pinehurst Resort) and another who has been named one of Golf Magazine’s Top 100 Teachers (presently the Director of Instruction at Oakmont Country Club).

The golf program has a dedicated indoor practice area in the David V. Wise Center, complete with hitting cages, putting green and short game area. Players have access to the indoor practice facilities throughout the entire school year.

The Allegheny golf program has a Foresight Sports GC2 launch monitor along with Foresight Sports Simulation Software. This allows the Gators to hit on the driving range or play one of 14 championship courses including Oakmont, Pebble Beach, Carnoustie, Firestone, and Congressional. In addition, the program utilizes a V1 Golf coaching system that allows all team members to view and analyze their swings.

The Gators enjoy their own home course at The Country Club of Meadville, which is located just two miles north of campus. The Club has served as one of the region’s top golf venues for over 100 years.

With the privilege of calling The Country Club of Meadville their home course, head coach Jeff Groff and the Allegheny golf programs have benefited greatly from the tutelage of the Club’s head professional, Mike Ferry. A longtime member of the PGA, Ferry assists Groff and the Gators not only on the course, but also with the planning and administration of Allegheny’s two home fall tournaments, the Guy Kuhn Memorial Invitational (men) and the Allegheny Invitational (women), which repeatedly receive high marks from competitors, coaches, and spectators year-in and year-out.

“The Country Club and Allegheny College have had a great working releationship for several decades,” said Ferry. “Such a relationship allows the college golfers a great opportunity to grow in the game and excel.”

Ferry was born and raised in Meadville, PA and graduated from Meadville Area High School and Slippery Rock University with a degree in Marketing. Michael was an assistant at Sharon Country Club and Head Golf Professional at Oak Tree Country Club and Avalon Golf & Country Club. While playing at Slippery Rock, he was a two-time First Team All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) honoree, while being named an NCAA Division II All-American following his senior campaign.

He has been a member of the PGA of America since 1999 and has over 20 years in the golf business. Mike also competes competively in the Tri-State Section. He and wife Shelby, have three children, Ryan, Paige and Luke.

“The Club always welcomes the team to practice and compete throughout the fall seasons,” Ferry said. “If you want to improve an area of your game, I am always more than willing to work with you on the course or at Allegheny’s on-campus indoor facilities.”

In addition to its home venue at The Country Club of Meadville, as well as several other courses within close distance at which to play, Allegheny golf has been proud explorers of some of the game’s most prominent venues. In the past several years, the Gators have played some of the world’s most exclusive courses, including Old Prestwick in Ayrshire, Scotland (site of the first British Open), Oakmont Country Club in Pennsylvania (site of 20 Majors), and Scioto in Columbus, Ohio (site of five PGA Championships). Each year, the Gators get a head start on the spring schedule with a spring break trip to the Tampa, Fla. area, where they’ve played clubs that include the likes of Old Memorial, Feathersound, Saddlebrook, Lexington Oaks, and Tampa Palms.

Recent foreign golf tours for the Gator program have included Scotland in 2005 and Ireland in both 2010 and 2014.

Each year, both the Gator men’s and women’s teams compete in some of the most highly-regarded collegiate invitationals across the country, where they face top-notch competition from across all three NCAA classifications.

Founded in 1983, the North Coast Athletic Conference is dedicated to fostering a complementary relationship between intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence. Consisting of nine academically selective colleges and universities in Ohio, Indiana and Pennsylvania — Allegheny College, Denison University, DePauw University, Hiram College, Kenyon College, Oberlin College, Ohio Wesleyan University, Wabash College, Wittenberg University, The College of Wooster in addition to Earlham College as an affiliate member — the NCAC believes that high-level athletic programs need not be sacrificed in order to meet rigid academic standards.

Significantly, all nine NCAC institutions have been granted chapters of Phi Beta Kappa, the preeminent honor society for colleges and universities. Only 276 of the more than 3,000 four-year institutions in the United States have been so honored.

A member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s Division III, the NCAC features championship competition in 23 sports — 11 for men and 12 for women. The 12 women’s sports are among the most offered by any Division III conference, and the equality in number and emphasis between men’s and women’s athletics is just one of the elements that sets the North Coast apart.

The goals of the conference express the best aspirations of American amateur athletics. The NCAC brings together a group of institutions which share a common allegiance to academic quality and to the conduct of athletics so as to support the educational purpose. Intercollegiate athletics can and should complement academic life, rather than compete with it, and sports should enhance the experience of students during their college years. This type of academic and athletic commitment has been led by the school presidents, who have taken an active role in the governance of the conference.

The NCAC’s commitment to equity, its broad base of athletic programs, and an unwavering insistence on excellence in academics has served as a model for conferences throughout the country. The North Coast has shown not only that these ideals can coexist, but that they can flourish. The NCAC continues as a pace-setter in the 21st century.

In addition to numerous graduates that have gone forward to start their own business, chair corporations, and serve as presidents and CEOs of various companies throughout the nation, many Allegheny graduates have pursued a career in golf as coaches and club professionals.

One of the program’s most notable alums is Nathan Smith ‘01, who has built one of the most decorated careers in the history of amateur golf. In 2012, Smith joined legends Jack Nicklaus and Ben Hogan as one of 15 players in USGA history to win the same championship at least four times when he captured the Mid-Amateur Championship, which also resulted in his his fourth invitation to the Masters.

He again participated in the 2013 Masters, before representing the United States in the prestigious Walker Cup, where he made the winning putt to clinch the victory for the Americans.

In 2015, Smith teamed up with Todd White to win the inaugural US Amateur Four-Ball, an amateur team golf tournament conducted by the United States Golf Association (USGA). In the event, 128 teams compete in a 36-hole stroke play qualifier that determines the field of 32 teams for match play, won by Smith and White at San Francisco’s Olympic Club 7 and 5.

At the conclusion of 2015, Smith has won a total of 15 amateur and mid-amateur events during his 12-year career, while participating in four Masters.

“My experience at Allegheny gave me the confidence to accomplish success in my business and amateur golf career. The curriculum helped me think more critically, as well as helping me develop the communication skills that are imperative in any successful business. To know that I will always be a part of the Allegheny College championship golf program is something I cherish. There are a lot of high level academic institutions in the United States, and there are a number of great athletic programs in the college ranks, but Allegheny College provides student-athletes with an opportunity to pursue both at an extraordinarily high level.” - Matt Clarke ‘83

“As a founding member of the women’s golf program and a student at Allegheny, I had the opportunity to compete at a high level on a nationally-recognized team while receiving an outstanding education. My time with the Gators, both in the classroom and on the golf course, made for a great college experience, and one that I will carry with me for life.” - Alison Bruckner ‘09

“The team at Allegheny allowed me to be a member of a program and a tradition that is one of the most prominent in the area, regardless of division. It is a program where the expectation is to compete for a national championship annually. At Allegheny, I played in places and tournaments I would have never dreamed of being in at the beginning of my college career. And with all of this, I truly realized the full value of a degree from Allegheny following graduation.” - Chad Kosanovic ‘06

“The Allegheny golf program provides students with a highly-competitive athletic environment, while complementing academics and other aspects of college life to create the ideal student-athlete experience. The opportunity has allowed me to distinguish myself in today’s competitive job market, and be well prepared for the new challenges as a young professional.” - Liz Blyth ‘13

“The Allegheny golf program offers a unique experience that combines the opportunity to excel in the classroom, with the commitment to excellence on the course. It provides experiences and relationships that will last forever.” - Rob Hippert ‘12

“The golf team at Allegheny is more like a family. We helped each other through homework, classes, practices, and tournaments. The best way to balance school and a sport is to have supportive people by your side, and that is exactly what you will find at Allegheny College.” - Hannah Schonau-Taylor ‘11

“When I played golf for Allegheny, I had no idea that it was going to impact my future life as much as it has. Without being on the golf team, I would have never recconected with the college as much as I have. I really enjoy having the teams down to Tampa each year and getting to know the student-athletes. They give me hope for the future!” - Dr. Jeffrey Leimbacher ‘74

“My time at Allegheny will forever be cherished. My experiences, friends made, and education received have forever made an impact on me. I am glad I chose Allegheny.” - Michael Wolfe ‘09
