Bellbrook-Sugarcreek Schools has been chosen to par-ticipate in a program designed to produce significant ener-gy-conservation savings. The Ohio Facilities Construction Commission (OFCC)

has given its approval to a proposal from the district that isexpected to generate $178,000 in annual energy andoperational savings for the school system. The projectswill be completed under the Commission’s School EnergyConservation program, more commonly known as the H.B.264 program. The Bellbrook-Sugarcreek Schools projectwill include lighting upgrades, controls programming andintegration, and new heating and cooling equipment.Bellbrook-Sugarcreek Schools’ Superintendent of

Schools Dr. Keith St.Pierre shared his excitement for thisendeavor. “Being good stewards of community tax dollarson a consistent basis, the Board of Education and admin-istration are always investigating methods of getting opti-mal and quality services for minimal costs. House Bill 264allows our district to enhance lighting, for efficiency andsafety, and to realize significant reduced consumption forlighting, cooling and heating. This gain will be long term.”OFCC Interim Executive Director David Chovan said,

“The H.B. 264 program makes it possible for Ohio schooldistricts to take on projects that reduce their energy con-sumption. The annual savings generated will allowBellbrook-Sugarcreek Schools to upgrade its facilities andbecome more energy efficient. Furthermore, the energysaving will cover the cost of the financing used to fund theprojects.”

Like the book “The Little EngineThat Could”, the Bellbrook MarchingEagles took on the 2014 season withoptimism and an eye toward the valueof hard work…and the small marchingband won big!The Marching Eagles began their

tour schedule participating in theLions Club parade, held a commandperformance and competed in threeregional Bands of America competi-tions, earning Regional Championstatus at all three. During the Bands of America Grand

National Championship inIndianapolis, the band competedagainst over 90 other bands and fin-

ished in the top 35, making it to thesemifinals, where they finished sec-ond overall in Class A.The band performed “Paris

Sketches” by Martin Ellerby. Othermusical choices were “American in

Paris” by George Gershwin andselections from Ratatouille by MichaelGiuacchino. The high-school band staff does a

tremendous job working with stu-dents, to make their band and colorguard the best that they can be.Thanks to Chris Foster, director ofbands; Barbara Siler, assistant direc-tor of bands; Andy Soloman, assistantdirector of bands; Sheldon Apo, color-guard director; Michael Gaines, drilldesign; Andrew Markworth, musicdesign; Byron Valentine, visual con-sultant; Bart Woodley, visual consult-ant; and Kelly Young, visual consult-ant.

Since 1952, OAGChas been workingwith families andeducators to pro-mote the best inter-ests of gifted children, including opportunities such as theSusan Faulkner Fine Arts Exhibition and Auction during theOAGC Fall Conference.BHS art teacher Michelle Fogarty assisted Danny in get-ting his artwork submitted for the auction. According toOAGC, student pieces are selected based on the sophisti-cation of the piece in relation to the age of the student, originality and use of media. Students from across Ohio submitted artwork, with theartists and the OAGC scholarship fund splitting the pro-ceeds. Mrs. Fogarty said that Danny plans to attend the School ofVisual Arts in New York City.

What do eggs, chicks, redbelly piranhas, whip spiders, zebra mussels, scan-ning electron microscopes and the Indiana bat have in common? One diversi-fied science class, taught by Mrs. Cathy St.Pierre, seventh-grade scienceteacher at Bellbrook Middle School. It has always been her mission to extend learning opportunities beyond the

classroom. She does this through community partnership. The United States Air Force at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base (WPAFB)

has an educational outreach program for educators, students and schools inthe local community. Mrs. St.Pierre utilizes many of these programs for her stu-dents every year.In November 2014, many of Mrs. St.Pierre’s students participated in the

Scanning Electron Microscope EDucatorS (SEMEDS) program. Electron micro-scopes, which use beams of electrons instead of light, are designed for veryhigh-magnification usage. The scanning electron microscope (SEM) is a type ofelectron microscope capable of producing high-resolution images of a samplesurface. Due to the manner in which the image is created, SEM images have acharacteristic three-dimensional appearance and are useful for judging the sur-face structure of the sample. This program is conducted by volunteers from across the base and is spon-

sored by the Air Force Research Laboratory Materials and ManufacturingDirectorate. SEMEDS is a two-hour after-school program for high-school andmiddle-school students. Two sessions are offered each month, each accommo-dating 18 students.Mrs. St.Pierre’s students also participated in a 4-H school enrichment course

called STEM in Your School Chick Quest. “In this program students use sci-ence, engineering and technology to investigate the life cycle of embryonicchicken eggs,” said Mrs. St.Pierre. “Students monitor conditions of temperatureand humidity of the living eggs, watch them hatch and observe the fluffychicks.”Mrs. St.Pierre noted that her science classes recently investigated different

biomes, such as the rainforest. Biomes are defined as “the world’s major com-munities, classified according to the predominant vegetation and characterizedby adaptations of organisms to that particular environment.”Melissa Jordan, who spent parts of the last two summers in the Peru rainfor-

est, was a guest speaker in the classroom. She enlightened students about herexperiences fishing for redbelly piranhas, as well as learning about the whipspider and how the Peruvian people use plants for medicines, and craft bowlsand purses out of things that they find on the island. To conclude the students’ environmental-science unit, another guest speaker

was welcomed into the classroom. Mike Vaughn, parent of seventh-graderBrodi Vaughn and an environmental scientist at WPAFB, shared his love of theoutdoors with students. They were fascinated with the biodiversity of Lake Erie, including invasive species of zebra mussels and round gobies. They alsolearned that the Indiana bat can be very valuable, as it can eat 3,000 mosqui-toes per hour (up to 10,000 per night)! Mr. Vaughn talked about the variety ofcareers in environmental science, biodiversity, threatened/endangered speciesand invasive species in Ohio, habitat loss and urban sprawl.Mrs. St.Pierre said, “It is important to provide authentic experiences and

opportunities for learning beyond the traditional science classroom.”

Bellbrook Middle School –Turning Ideas Into RealityIn December 2014, University of

Dayton (UD) engineering studentsfrom Dr. Margie Pinnell’s class visit-ed the Bellbrook Middle School(BMS) seventh-grade scienceclasses, where they facilitated anengineering design challenge called“Turning Ideas Into Reality:Engineering a Better World.” The challenge was based on a

real-life event. After horrific destruc-tion from an earthquake in Mexico, residents were stranded on top of amountain. All roads weredestroyed. Students were chal-lenged to design a cart and zip line

that would safely transport the resi-dents to the bottom of the moun-tain.BMS students were up to the

challenge, using foam cups, popsi-cle sticks, toothpicks, straws, rub-ber bands, paperclips and pipecleaners to design a basket thatwould safely glide along the zipline. Students enjoyed working withthe UD mechanical-engineeringstudents, learning to problem solve, design a product, build and test it,and then evaluate strengths andweaknesses to improve perform-ance.
