2014/2015 CLIBURN CONCERTS BASS / KIMBELL / MODERN

description

In the midst of our busy, multitasking lives, the recital experience offers something different, something needed: a pure connection. A connection with our fellow audience members, with the artists on stage—but, more than anything, with the music. We stop for an hour or two, put down our phones, and allow the music to speak to us through its finely-trained and consummate ambassadors, who are—as described by Van Cliburn—but its witnesses and messengers. It is a seemingly paradoxical, uniquely valuable time when we can commune with others for a journey that is, at its core, introspective. Our guarantee for these Cliburn Concerts is to bring the world’s best witnesses and messengers to Fort Worth’s finest concert venues each season to deliver some of the best music ever written directly to you. We hope to connect with you soon.

[Rana] delivered an industrial-strength, knockout recital...with confidence as well as with a great deal of intuition and sensitivity.– Washington Times

Italian pianist Beatrice Rana drew mass attention during the 2013 Cliburn Competition for “intensely personalized music-making” (Dallas Morning News) that “had an electrical current running through virtually every measure” (The Plain Dealer). Already a rising star, Ms. Rana was named “One to Watch” by International Piano magazine just before her Cliburn appearance. Recent and upcoming debuts include: Detroit Symphony, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Kennedy Center, and Paris’ Théâtre des Champs Élysées with conductors such as Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Miguel Harth-Bedoya, Leonard Slatkin, and Fayçal Karoui.

Mr. Matsuev, wielding his athletic virtuosity and steely power, gave a chiseled, hard-driving yet transparent performance.” – The New York Times

Since his triumph at the 11th International Tchaikovsky Competition in 1998, Denis Matsuev has become a virtuoso in the grandest of Russian pianistic tradition and has quickly established himself as one of the prominent pianists of his generation. In addition to performing in recital in the international music capitals, he has performed with the world’s great orchestras, including the Chicago Symphony, London Symphony, Royal Concertgebouw, and all of the legendary Russian orchestras, and with master conductors such as Kurt Masur, Charles Dutoit, and Lorin Maazel. In 2010, the New York Philharmonic invited him as a leading soloist, under Valery Gergiev, in the orchestra’s 15,000th concert, and he was recently a featured performer during the 2014 Winter Olympic Games Closing Ceremony.

In 1973, Maestro John Giordano had just completed his first season as music director and conductor of the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra—a position he held for the next 27 years—when he was called on to serve as jury chairman for the Fourth Cliburn Competition. For 11 quadrennial competitions and over 40 years, he performed that role with dignity and excellence, as an integral and invaluable part of the Cliburn family. He helped launch the careers of many, many young pianists, among those the eight who return this spring to pay tribute to him as he now becomes the Cliburn’s first jury chairman emeritus.

James Ehnes, whose artistry suggests that in Paganini’s age he would have enjoyed similar stature to the great man, succeeds impressively in being more than merely thrilling…this is not simply a high-wire act. It’s playing of phenomenal control, allied to musicianship of the highest order.–The Times (London)

Gifted with a rare combination of stunning virtuosity, serene lyricism, and an unfaltering musicality, James Ehnes is a favorite guest of many of the world’s most respected conductors including Vladimir Ashkenazy, Marin Alsop, Sir Andrew Davis, Charles Dutoit, Paavo Järvi, and Lorin Maazel. He has performed in over 30 countries on five continents, appearing regularly with many of the world’s most well-known orchestras, including Boston, Chicago, Cleveland, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, New York, London Symphony, Philharmonia, BBC Philharmonic, and the NHK Symphony Orchestras. His extensive discography of over 25 recordings has garnered many international awards and prizes, including a Grammy®, a Gramophone, and six Juno Awards.

Perhaps the most inspired, certainly the mostoriginal Bach player of his generation.–Der Spiegel

French pianist David Fray was named “Newcomer of the Year 2008” by BBC Music Magazine. A frequent soloist with leading orchestras, he has collaborated with distinguished conductors such as Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Kurt Masur, Christoph Eschenbach, and Riccardo Muti, with recent highlights including performances with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and the Cleveland and Boston Symphony Orchestras. He also maintains an active career as a recitalist, performing in the most important concert halls across Europe, Asia, and the United States, including the Louvre in Paris, Royal Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, and Carnegie Hall in New York. Welcome this phenomenal artist in his Cliburn Concerts debut.

He sang with agility, elegance and Rossinian style, tossing off high notes and roulades…this was a winning performance for an increasingly important artist.– New York Times

The most in-demand American tenor in the world in the bel canto repertoire, Lawrence Brownlee continues to astonish audiences with the power and agility of his instrument. From firmly American roots, Brownlee has become a star on the international scene, performing opposite the leading ladies of opera and lauded continually for the seemingly effortless beauty of his voice. He has been featured in nearly every major theater in the world and enjoys a relationship with many premier conductors and symphony orchestras, and has also performed recitals at the Kennedy Center, Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center’s Avery Fisher Hall, Grand Théâtre de Genève in Switzerland, and on London’s Rosenblatt Series.

…the music of Lowell Liebermann communicates warmly and vividly. For all the lyrical fervour of Liebermann’s beguiling idiom, it rarely cloys, thanks in no small measure to the formidable craft he so abundantly possesses. – Gramophone

Lowell Liebermann is one of America’s most frequently performed and recorded composers—a favorite among orchestras and distinguished artists worldwide. His compositions have been recorded and released by over 40 labels, and his Piano Concerto No. 2, performed by Stephen Hough and the BBC Scottish Symphony, was nominated for a Grammy®. He has served as composer-in-residence for many organizations, including the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, Sapporo’s Pacific Music Festival, and the Saratoga Performing Arts Center, and won the Cliburn’s American Composers Invitational in 2001. He maintains an active performing schedule as pianist and conductor, in such venues as Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, London’s Wigmore Hall, and the Berlin Philharmonie.

A minute after the music began, I knew that I was in the hands of a brilliant theatre composer.– The New Yorker

American composer-librettist Mark Adamo first attracted national attention with his uniquely celebrated début opera, Little Women, after the Alcott novel. Introduced by Houston Grand Opera in 1998, it is one of the most frequently performed American operas of the last 15 years, with more than 80 national and international engagements. While his principal work continues to be for the opera house (Lysistrata and The Gospel of Mary Magdalene), over the past several years he has ventured into chamber, symphonic, and choral composition; his first concerto, Four Angels, for harp and orchestra, was commissioned by the National Symphony Orchestra and debuted in June 2007.
