The other, a Concord woman who was not identi-fi ed, remains in critical condi-tion with serious burns.

Iris-scanning technology for booking prisoners; facial, iris and fingerprint recognition pro-gramming for a cop’s iPhone; a biometric database for sex of-fenders — it all sounds straight out of a James Bond movie, but it’s real and it’s being produced in Plymouth.

BI2 Technologies has sold its gadgetry to dozens of law enforcement entities, but some are asking if this equipment is necessarily good for the U.S.

Many law enforcement offi-

cials, and guys like Sean Mullin, the CEO of BI2, certainly think so. Mullin says such technology makes life easier for police and citizens alike. It saves time and offers reliable and accurate in-formation, he says. He also says the market for such products is booming as law enforcement becomes more comfortable us-ing such tools.

However, not everyone is welcoming these products with open arms. Take Kade Crock-ford, the director of the Tech-nology for Liberty program at the ACLU of Massachusetts. She is among those who are concerned about the growing over-militarization of police in the U.S.

Police run the risk of tram-pling civil liberties in their race to obtain the most cutting-edge technology, she says.

Plymouth. In the face of civil liberty concerns, the market for biometric police tools is growing.

“Technologies like this — iris and face recognition — have a way of spreading in ways that are not totally ap-propriate,” she said.

Such concerns have grown louder across the country re-cently, in reaction to the shoot-ing of an unarmed black teen-ager in Ferguson, Missouri.

“All too often there is liter-ally zero conversation about whether or not people want

this,” said Crockford. “This is definitely related to the milita-rization of police. It illustrates the breakdown between mili-tary and local and state police.”

Crockford says there are still many unanswered questions regarding how authorities use such biometric information.

Mullin is aware of the civil liberty concerns and is quick to point out “200-plus years of constitutional law does not go away  because someone comes up with another gadget.”

“You have to have probable cause to scan someone’s iris,” he said.

The iris database Mullin’s company has built over the last six years has completed 12.2 billion successful cross-matches with a “zero percent false match rate,” he says.

He foresees iris-identifying

products to increase not only in law enforcement circles, but also in the banking, finance and health care industries in years to come.

“That’s the direction it’s going in,” he said.

A pair of state gaming commissioners on Monday published their assessments of different aspects of two Boston-area casino plans.

Mohegan Sun is seeking approval to build a resort-style casino at Suffolk Downs racetrack in Revere, as Wynn Resorts Ltd. seeks the same support to build a resort-style casino in Everett.

Commissioner James McHugh, assessing each proposal’s building site and

design, labeled Mohegan’s design “creative,” and said he thought Wynn’s plan had “many positives,” but that the proposed hotel tower lacks “innovative energy characteristic of its Las Vegas hotels.”

Commissioner Enrique Zuniga assessed the financial plan of each project, judging Mohegan’s to be sufficient and Wynn’s to be “very good to outstanding.” DANNY MCDONALD

Rescue officials pulled the unidentified 25-year-old man out from under the train at Back Bay Station around 9:15 p.m. on Sunday.

The Boston Fire Depart-ment said the man was between the rails, and was conscious when he was res-cued. He somehow managed to avoid the electrified third rail.

“We were able to extricate him quickly. He was between the tracks underneath the train, so he wasn’t hurt too badly,” Boston Fire spokes-man Steve MacDonald told The Boston Globe.

Hollaback! Ads on T discourage catcalling

Posters that have just popped up around the MBTA drop a big hint to clueless riders: If you don’t have anything appropri-ate to say, don’t say anything at all.

Hollaback! Boston and Mass NOW partnered to create the new ads, which were unveiled on T buses last Thursday and Red Line trains on Monday. The three posters display the mes-sages, “‘Hey sexy’ is not a com-pliment,” “Are you a boy or a girl?” and “If you see it happen, have her back.” They also warn that such comments qualify as street harassment.

“Public transportation is perfect [for harassers] because it’s anonymous,” said Britni de la Cretaz, a Hollaback! Boston director.

“The victim is trapped, it’s hard to get away and at the same time every stop is an easy escape for the harasser, so there is not a lot of accountability.”

Hollaback! Boston, which works to eradicate catcalling, has previously collaborated with the Boston Area Rape Cri-sis Center and Transit Police to place anti-sexual assault ads on the T, but de la Cretaz said Hol-laback! wanted their own ads targeting unwanted comments.

Hollaback! intern Kayla Ho-gan helped secure funding for the ads through Mass NOW’s

The iPhone 6 is expected to be announced today, which means that eager techies have already predicted what Apple will an-nounce in their highly secretive junket.

Among the most popular rumors is that the iPhone will get slightly bigger, boasting a 4.7-inch screen instead of the standard 4 inches. There’s also rumors that there will be a sec-ond, even larger 5.5-inch model.

With the larger sizes comes a larger price tag. The jumbo model is expected to retail at $299. However, the larger phone will supposedly come with a flat sapphire crystal dis-play to prevent cracked screens and a new 128GB storage op-

tion, in addition to other up-graded features. People will be able to get their hands on either phone later this month.

While it’s groundbreak-ing territory for the iPhone to have two different sizes, Jack

Narcotta, analyst at Technol-ogy Business Research, Inc., said the company is simply playing catch-up to its competitors who already offer bigger screens, like the Samsung Galaxy Note and other Android models. “It’s more noteworthy (no pun in-tended) that Apple will likely be offering iPhone users a choice. The real story should be Apple’s expanding iPhone product line, not so much the focus on the screen’s dimensions,” he pointed out.

Bustling under the radar is the iWatch, which is also expect-ed to be announced. A smart watch could do everything in-cluding providing biometric data for health and fitness apps to helping people synchronize across their devices.

Apple may be developing mobile payment systemPerhaps more industry-changing is the murmurs about Apple developing a mobile payment system—dubbed the iWallet—using NFC (near fi eld communica-tion). The mobile wallet will allow users to use their smartphone to pay for their goods without having to carry cash or cards, and the company has reportedly signed agreements with Visa, Mastercard and American Ex-press. Technology analyst Jeff Kagan said this move refl ects what customers want in their tech devices today: ultimate

The Baltimore Ravens released Ray Rice on Monday after a video surfaced showing the three-time Pro Bowl running back punching his then-fian-cee during an argument earlier this year.

A short time later, the Na-tional Football League also

An NFL spokesman said the league had not seen the new video before suspending the 27-year-old Rice for two games, a punishment widely seen as too lenient.

“We requested from law enforcement any and all infor-mation about the incident, in-cluding the video from inside the elevator,” NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said in an email to Reuters.

Words to lead to financial success

↓↑

This week, Apple will fi nally announce

its new products. I cannot wait!

I have done much in my life; I

made my fi rst million before

I was 22, wrote a best-selling

book by age 26 and helped to

create two millionaire students.

But in addition to investing and

teaching, I’m also an avid reader.

Here are what I’ve learned are

the three most important words

to get ahead.

Word No. 1: Yes

Say yes to trying new things and

meeting new people. Far too

many people are narrow-minded

and live their lives without ever

giving life a chance to surprise

them.

The world is a vast and

mesmerizing place to be

explored and experienced.

Saying yes when opportunities

arise will allow you to expand

your mind and comfort zone,

and I promise that you will see,

taste, hear and smell things that

will only enrich you and make

you a much more well-rounded

and interesting individual.

Word No. 2: No

Saying yes is great, and it will

open many new doors to you,

but sometimes you must also

say no and close some of those

doors. You must learn your

limits or your life and your

adventurous, fun-loving

personality will be cut short.

For example, while I like

to keep an open mind, I don’t

enjoy anything that risks great

loss, injury or death, such as

diving with great white sharks

(as I was off ered to do in

South Africa) or buying into a

potentially revolutionary new

technology that has just become

a penny stock. Be smart and

meticulous, and always weigh

the risk against the reward

before blindly agreeing to

something. If it makes you truly

uncomfortable, just say no!

Word No. 3: Maybe

Life isn’t so simple that every

decision can be made with a

quick yes or no; there’s a wide

gap in between that calls for

a “maybe.” This is my favorite

word because it allows you to

pause, consider all your options

and choose the absolute best

course of action.

This is particularly helpful

in the stock market, as there

are risks and rewards to every

investment. To get the best

possible outcome, consider all

the variables before making a

decision.

What Sykes likes this week

The U.S. stock market is reach-ing new all-time highs every

day after a dip in August.

Be careful as September and October have been

dangerous in the past.

A growing number of stock market bears have made every case possible for an upcoming crash, and yet the indices keep ticking higher. It’s never paid to be a long-term bear of the U.S. — you’d think they would’ve

learned by now!

Also confirmed: Middleton is once again suffer-ing from very acute morning sickness and is being treated by doctors. But now at least Harry will have a real job to do in coaching his upcoming niece or nephew how to best serve as “the backup” — as his late mother, Princess Diana, used to call him. Rogak says Stewart has been preoccupied with fi lming “Rosewater,” about journalist Maziar Bahari, right, and less focused on “The Daily Show.” / GETTY IMAGES

Unauthorized

biography. Lisa Rogak explores the lesser known side of Jon Stewart in her new book, “Angry Optimist.”

He’s one of the most popular guys on TV and comes across as not only funny, but genu-inely kind. But Lisa Rogak, who profiles Jon Stewart in her lat-est unauthorized biography, “Angry Optimist: The Life and Times of Jon Stewart,” says the TV personality has a dark side that would surprise his fans.

It should be noted that Rogak never interviewed Stewart or visited the set of “The Daily Show,” but instead pulled information from ar-ticles and interviews about him and talked to some people who have worked with him or knew him growing up. And while she does point out some of Stewart’s positive traits, the shock lies in the revelation that Stewart is bitter and a hermit.

“The angst of working on the set [was exposed] a few years ago, and in a response to that, a PR person at Comedy Central contacted Bark maga-zine to do a story on how staff members could bring their dogs to work. It was like, ‘Let’s just stop the attention from all the angst, inner conflict and

“bad boss” stories,’” Rogak says. While he is presumably a

happy family man, Rogak has her doubts about Stewart’s wife, Tracey McShane. “I found one quote where she said she was anxious all the time,” Rogak re-ports. “[Stewart] is angry all the time, but he believes everything will turn out for the better.”

As for what she thinks is next for Stewart, Rogak pre-dicts that it all depends on how the movie he directed, “Rose-water,” is perceived. “It just seems like he is going through the motions [with ‘The Daily Show’] and not taking a lot of risks like he used to,” she says. “I wouldn’t be surprised if he were to announce he was leav-ing the show.”

Does Jon Stewart have a secret dark side?

How he compares

Stewart vs. Colbert

Rogak, who has written more than 40 books including biographies of President Barack Obama,

Michelle Obama and Shel Silverstein, says Stewart could not be more diff erent from Stephen Colbert, someone else she released a biography about. “Everyone went out of their way to say Colbert was a gentleman and a genuinely nice man,” she says. “When I was doing the research on Jon Stewart, nobody used those terms.”

HUNNAM’S JAX WILL BE HEADING IN

A PRETTY DARK DIRECTION THIS SEASON.

GETTY IMAGES

Death is a way of life for the

outlaw bikers of “Sons of Anar-

chy.” Still, the show surprised many with the murder of series regular Tara (Mag-gie Siff) at the end of Season 6, and now tragedy — and betrayal — hit the

club harder than

ever. The group’s president, Jax (Charlie Hunnam), is hell-bent on revenge in the series’ last 13 episodes; in teasers for the final season of the FX drama, he’s even seen morphing into the Grim Reaper.

When Season 7 premieres, 10 days have passed since Tara’s death. Jax, her long-time paramour, “is in a very schizophrenic state,” Hunnam says. “He’s obviously very, very sad and vulnerable and kind of broken, but there’s a huge amount of vengeance and an-ger in his heart, at least in the very beginning. … He knows what he wants to do, but he can’t get away from the fact that the love of his life has just been taken from him.”

Jax certainly didn’t see Tara’s gruesome death-by-carv-ing-fork coming, but neither did series creator Kurt Sutter — at least not in its minute details. Though he has always had a sense of where he want-ed the series to end, Sutter says he was better off playing exact

story lines by ear. Even in the middle of writing the final season, Sutter admits he isn’t exactly sure where his charac-ters will take him episode by episode.

“I’ve learned that the looser I grip that idea [of a blueprint],

the better the seasons are,” he says. “And this season really isn’t any different. I came in with how I wanted the season to end, which will be obvi-ously the end of the series. … But things change with differ-ent story ideas. So it’s always sort of been heading in the same direction, but the way I’m getting there continuously changes.”

One thing we know: Sutter has been hinting heavily that other members of the gang might not make it through the finale — and there aren’t that many left to begin with. Fear the Reaper, indeed.

‘SOA’ goes musical

Marilyn Manson and Courtney Love will appear on “SOA” this season, but not like you’ve typically seen them — they’ll be playing a white supremacist and teacher, respectively. How’d Sutter snag them?

“Manson, I had become friends with through some music buddies, and he’s a huge fan of the show,” Sutter says. “And that was him basi-cally just wearing me down. … Courtney, I don’t know that well. I was a huge Nirvana fan, and so there was that connec-tion. She had expressed inter-est in wanting to work on the show, and then we had this role of a schoolteacher. And I thought, ‘Who better than Courtney Love?’”

Orlando. Whether

you visit Mickey every

year or this is your fi rst

time, here’s how to

prep for the parks.

Kim Wright Wiley and Leigh Wiley Jenkins, authors of Fodor’s annual “Walt Disney World with Kids” guidebook, are the ultimate Disney World experts. Here are their top tips for a successful vacation with the whole family.

When to go

Our favorite times to visit are Sep-

tember and early December. With the

exception of Labor Day, September is

the least crowded month to visit and

early December doesn’t yet have the

crowds, but it does have the holiday

shows and decorations. The parks run

slightly shorter hours in the off -season,

but since there are fewer people, you

can still easily tour a park in a day.

Where to stay

Onsite Disney hotels are usually more

expensive but allow quicker access to

the parks. Off site hotels have lower

rates, but you have to drive to the

parks or rely on their transportation,

which can consist of only a few buses

per day. If you fi nd a good deal and

have a car, consider staying off site.

Otherwise, onsite is your best bet.

Take a nap

Lots of families have reported success

with this formula: Morning in the

parks; afternoon at the hotel, lying by

the pool or napping; evening back at

the parks to catch the closing shows

and fi reworks.

Family dinners made easy — seriously Parenting hacks.

“Dinner: The Playbook” author Jenny Rosenstrach tells parents what’s for dinner, and how to make it happen.

Family dinners are supposed to be a time when everyone puts his or her phone away, asks about everyone’s day and enjoys a relaxing meal. But if you’re a parent, you know that isn’t exactly what happens. What’s more likely is that you come home from work tired, your kids are asking you what’s for dinner, nothing you suggest makes everyone happy and whatever you decide upon usually requires a trip to the store. Then you’re stuck with a sink full of dishes.

Jenny Rosenstrach, who

“Dinner: The Playbook” not only contains recipes, it helps families plan their meals a week out. / PROVIDED

wrote “Dinner: The Playbook” and also writes the blog “Dinner: A Love Story,” wants you to know it doesn’t have to be that way. Her book is a practical guide for families — especially families in which both parents work — to create simple, satisfying meals everyone will eat. It not only provides many answers to the eternal “What’s for dinner?” question, it helps families plan out their meals week by week. Best of all, it’s packed with delicious recipes that are easy to whip up. See the recipe for chorizo tacos with slaw and avocado below.

Consent by celebs requiredRe: ‘Celebrities have no right to privacy’ (Metro, Sept. 8) To answer letter writer Jean Kazadi’s question, “What’s the diff erence when a celeb is paid $1 million by a magazine to publish his or her naked photos or a hacker posts them on the Net?” CONSENT. Short and sweet. Although celebri-ties know that their lives lack privacy, paparazzi pictures are diff erent than a person’s cell phone being hacked.KELSI DARLING, VIA EMAIL

Obama needs to take charge of ISIS crisisRe: ‘We will “degrade and destroy” ISIS: Obama’ (Metro, Sept. 4) As I read the news story on President Obama’s address in Estonia, I noted Metro ran

the “degrade and destroy” portion of what Obama stated to news reporters gathered around him, but it did not print the president’s response to a follow-up question as to how we will degrade and destroy ISIS. What the president said in response became the center of the whole news story. The president started off sounding like General Douglas MacArthur but ended up sounding like former President Jimmy Carter. I well remember when Obama went from speaking of destroy-ing ISIS to seeking to “shrink” it into a “manageable problem.” The White House then seemed

forced to send out Vice Presi-dent Joe Biden to clarify what Obama apparently meant to say. According to Biden, we will chase ISIS to the gates of hell. However, in the meantime, we can’t even cross over the line into Syria. Who’s in charge at the White House today? Back during Watergate, General Alex-ander Haig said he was. Now? No one. ISIS acts with impunity.SAL GIARRATANI, VIA EMAIL

BRADY AND BELICHICK TOO OLD TO WIN IN 2014?

When does an overreaction become just a reaction? Or even an underreaction?

We won’t really know if that panic button pressed by many Patriots fans yesterday was truly warranted until January or February or possibly as soon as December; but cer-tainly at no point in the past decade or so have there been as many people embedded in the “This Is the End” camp.

I’m starting to lean that way, myself — truth be told. I mean, at some point, the Foxboro magic will run out. It’s inevitable. It’s coming, and why couldn’t it come in 2014?

As much as everyone around here wants to hold off on saying Tom Brady and Bill Belichick aren’t as good as they used to be, that might just be the case right about now.

See, Father Time is one gruff and grizzled old man. He doesn’t warn you of his ar-rival, he’s always an uninvited guest and he kicks the door down with the kind of force that Cameron Wake levied on Brady two days ago. Sadly, Daddy Time might have just pulled off onto Route 1, passing a sign that reads “Foxboro/Wrentham.”

Before getting too car-ried away, it is important to remember that there have been games like Sunday’s before in the Brady/Belichick era, particularly early in the season and particularly against AFC East rivals. There was the Rex Ryan “voice mail” game in September of 2009, when Ryan told Jets fans to drown out

Brady. They did, and the Jets won 16-9 in the Meadowlands. Ryan and the Jets also got the best of Brady and the Pats in the second week of the 2010 season, winning 28-14 in New Jersey. In 2011, in the third game of that season, it was the Bills who upset the Pats, pick-ing off Brady four times and winning 34-31.

All of those games caused classic “Overreaction Mon-

days” around here, but all of those games also occurred when age stated that Brady and Belichick were both still in their primes.

Sorry, but 37 for an NFL quarterback is “past prime,” there’s no way around that. Age 62 for an NFL head coach is also “past prime.” That’s just a fact.

Quarterbacks in their early 30s and head coaches in their mid-50s are thought to be ideal in the NFL as history shows time and time again that win-ning comes easier to those in that age bracket.

We were told in the days prior to the disaster on South Beach that Brady could play until he’s 50, or at least until he “sucks.” And facts state that Belichick still has three years to go before he would enter a season with people snicker-ing “no coach that old has ever won a Super Bowl.” (Tom Coughlin won it all at 65.)

So this could all be another big overreaction. Until it isn’t. It’s quite possible the Pats could still go 12-4 or 13-3 this season. And they should definitely be at least .500 by the end of September with the Vikings, Raiders and Chiefs on tap. But Sunday’s issues could certainly pop up again in Janu-ary, and they may be part of a grand scale Patriots problem.

We’re simply looking for clues at this point as to the fate of Brady, Belichick and the Patriots in 2014 and beyond. The first hint of this particular season was an alarming one, for sure.
