Cops are on the lookout for a suspect in a brutal attack on two people in Staten Island on Friday morning. The man police seek allegedly choked a woman and stabbed a would-be rescuer in the back with a screwdriver.

Investigators said John Matthews, 34, got into an argument with an un-named woman at around 3:35 a.m. outside of Play Sports Bar in Annadale.

At some point, the argument turned physical, with Matthews allegedly striking and choking the woman. A 36-year-old man drove by the bar and wit-nessed the attack before, police said, he parked his car to help the woman.

The man’s intervention reportedly led to Matthews pulling a screwdriver from his pants pocket and stabbing the victim’s back multiple times.

Matthews then fled the scene in a 2003 burgundy

Drugs. New York busts international khat traffi cking ring New York authorities an-nounced criminal charges against 17 people accused of running an internation-al drug ring trafficking in tons of khat, a leafy plant chewed as a stimulant.

The ring allegedly moved the khat across four continents and distributed it in New York, Massachusetts and Ohio, New York Attorney Gen-eral Eric Schneiderman and New York City Police Department Commission-er William Bratton said.

Khat is grown and sold legally in much of eastern Africa where chewing the plant is an ancient social custom. It is widely con-sumed by Yemeni, Somali and Ethiopian communi-ties and is considered a controlled substance in the United States.

According to the 215-count indictment unsealed in Brooklyn Supreme Court, the khat was obtained in Yemen,

Kenya and Ethiopia.“Khat is a danger-

ous and illegal drug with worldwide reach,” Schneiderman said. “As a result of this international takedown, a sophisti-cated operation accused of bringing drugs into the United States and sending the profits overseas has been shut down.”

Following a year-long investigation, the indictment charges 17 co-conspirators — from England; New York City; Rochester, New York; Everett, Massachusetts; and Minnesota — with crimes including drug trafficking and possession, money laundering and conspiracy. REUTERS

An argument about a dance battle last month in Manhattan caused a punching attack that left one man with a broken jaw and fractured eye socket, police said.

The suspect was talking to an 18-year-old man about a dance competition on the corner of Third Avenue and East 23rd Street in Gramercy Park around 9:40 p.m. May 10 when he began punching the other young man in the face, according

to the NYPD.The suspect then fled

the scene, police said.

The 18-year-old was taken to Bellevue Hospital and treated for abrasions to his head in addition to the broken jaw and fractured eye socket, the NYPD said.

Police descried the suspect as an Asian man in his late teens or early twenties.

Surveillance footage of the suspect shows him walking with another man on a sidewalk, according to the NYPD. ANNA SANDERS

New York unveils plan to decrease HIV infections

On the 45th anniversary of the Stonewall Inn riots, Gov. Andrew Cuomo re-leased a plan to lower New Yorkers’ rates of HIV infec-tion below the number of HIV-related deaths.

The plan focuses on re-ducing new HIV infections to 750 cases by 2020. Last year, the state reported 3,000 new HIV infections, down from 14,000 in 1993.

“Thirty years ago, New York was the epicenter of the AIDS crisis. Today, I am proud to announce that

we are in a position to be the first state in the nation committed to ending this epidemic,” Cuomo said.

The first part of the plan is to identify HIV-infected individuals who remain undiagnosed and help them get care. Once they get care, the state wants to make sure they have anti-HIV therapy available to suppress the virus and prevent transmission.

The final objective is to provide access to Pre-Expo-sure Prophylaxis — or PrEP — to high-risk persons, whereby HIV-negative indi-viduals take daily antiviral medication to reduce risk of transmission.

Advocates around the state commended the governor’s plan as ambi-

tious but attainable.“We have the tools and

know-how to end the AIDS epidemic in New York,” community organizer for VOCAL New York Jason Walker said. “The only question is whether we have the political will.”

President Barack Obama will ask Congress for more than $2 billion to deal with the surge in unaccompa-nied children from Cen-tral America flooding into the United States along its southern border.

Obama will make the request for emergency funding in a letter on Mon-day, asking Congress to act when it returns from a holiday recess on July 7, a White House official said on Sunday.

Secretary of State John Kerry will travel to Central America this week for a

visit that will include the inauguration of Panama’s new president on July 1 and that is expected to include meetings on the crisis with Central American leaders.

In addition, Obama will seek greater authority for U.S. immigration officials to speed up the deportation of children caught cross-ing from countries such as

Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador, the official said.

The official said Obama will also request a “sus-tained border security surge through enhanced domestic enforcement,” along with an increase in immigration judges to more speedily adjudicate the cases of recent border crossers.” REUTERS

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko urged Presi-dent Vladimir Putin on Sunday to strengthen Rus-sian control over its bor-ders to prevent militants and arms entering Ukraine after violence broke a truce.

The cease-fire, declared by Poroshenko on June 20 to allow for peace talks with the pro-Russian reb-els, is due to expire on Mon-day, a deadline also set by EU leaders considering new sanctions against Russia.

The statement came after a four-way telephone conversation among the Ukrainian and Russian leaders, French President Francois Hollande and Ger-

man Chancellor Angela Merkel, said a statement from Poroshenko’s office.

The European Union has threatened more pen-alties on Moscow beyond existing asset freezes and visa bans unless pro-Rus-sian rebels act to ease the crisis by Monday.

Ukraine’s National Guard said Sunday rebels had used tanks and mortar shells to fire on a check-point near the separatist stronghold of Slaviansk, about 60 miles from the border with Russia. REUTERS

Carla McFarland, 35, of Frederick, Maryland, and

A short stay in the dog house could actually be positive for your pooch. A new study by British researchers measured a range of stress parameters, such as nose and core body temperature, lip-licking and yawning, in 29 pri-vately owned dogs both at home and in boarding ken-nels. Research suggested that dogs found a change of scene stressful, but the new evidence points to the contrary. Study co-author Lisa Collins, an animal behavior expert from University of Lincoln, U.K., tells Metro why a mini-

break for your mutt isn’t a bad thing.

Is leaving your dog in a boarding kennel more stressful for the owner than the pet?I expect so. I have a dog, and everyone I know who has a dog feels super guilty about leaving their dogs at the kennel, but the study shows there’s no reason to stress about it.

So, you don’t feel guilty?No.

Do stress levels vary between breeds? There were no breed differ-ences. The only exceptions were male neutered dogs, which seemed to show a greater response. EDWARD THOMPSON / MWN

421 Recent college graduates will soon face the first payments on their student loans, and many are wondering how best to manage their debt.

Personal finance experts Mark Kantrowitz,

senior vice president of Edvisors Network Inc, and Reyna Gobel, author of “Graduation Debt: How to Manage Student Loans” answer some important questions. REUTERS

It’s time for new grads to study up on loan repayment options. / DIGITAL VISION

What advice do you have for recent grads who have student debt? What should they do fi rst? Graduates fi rst need to understand that there’s no longer a good reason to default on federal stu-dent loans, said Gobel.

The Department of Education now off ers a slew of repayment op-tions. Borrowers can get out of default and even erase the negative marks from their credit reports with rehabilitation programs. Repayment options are explained on the department’s site (www.studentaid.ed.gov).

We answer your student loan FAQs

Money. About to

make your fi rst

loan payment?

Here’s what you

should know.

When saddled with student loan debt, is it more effi cient to just consolidate and lock in a low rate? Consolidating federal student loans typically won’t change the overall interest rate paid, since the new rate is a weighted average of the original fi xed-rate loans.

But consolidat-ing makes repayment simpler — one loan payment instead of several — and choosing a payback period longer than the standard 10 years can lower monthly payments. That could free up money for other important goals.

What about public service forgiveness options?

People with big federal student loan debt and low incomes can benefi t from two relatively new repayment plans: income-based repay-ment and “Pay as You Earn.”

Both cap the borrow-er’s monthly payment (the Pay as You Earn cap is typically the lowest). The Public Service Loan Forgiveness plan erases remaining Direct Loan balances after 10 years for people who work full time in eligible jobs, such as law enforce-ment, the military, public schools and nonprofi ts, Kantrowitz said. 3Is it a good idea to

defer a loan? What are the risks? Deferment allows the bor-rower to temporarily delay

loan repayments because of economic hardship. On certain loans — Federal Perkins Loans, Direct Subsi-dized Loans and Subsidized Staff ord Loans — the

government may pay the interest. Borrowers who don’t qualify for deferment may be able to get forbear-ance, which also means interest accrues.

Quoted

“All I knew [about the application process] was that I needed to get my parents’ tax information and give it to the government. And that was scary — that the government was poking at you.”Samantha Castillo , 21At the time of Game Innovation Lab’s

launch, Castillo was an 11th grader

living in a Latino neighborhood

where just getting through high

school was something of an accom-

plishment. Castillo knew she wanted

more education but assumed that

would mean community college.

Origins

The education center start-ed its outreach by offering mentoring programs for local teens, but quickly realized it didn’t have enough funding to reach more than a few hundred students, Corwin says.

So, four years ago, it reached out to the univer-sity’s Game Innovation Lab.

The university held game-design camps for low-income high school students who lived near the urban campus. The camps taught design skills while soliciting the students’ help in creating the games.

Strategies

The lab’s first effort was a card game, Application Crunch, which required players to take on the role of college applicants jug-gling academics, extracur-ricular activities, work and service while competing for college admission and scholarships.

“The game teaches you things like how to request a recommendation letter early, the importance of staying on top of deadlines [and] the importance of submitting the best ap-plication you can,” Corwin says.

The Facebook game

creative new way

for fi rst-generation

college students to

get the information

they need.

For the first-time college hopeful in a family, who might have less help navigating the complex application process, would playing some games offer insights, help with making school choices and boost his or her chances of com-pleting a degree?

Researchers and game developers at the Univer-sity of Southern California hope so.

They’ve developed a card game, a Facebook game and an online shoot-em-up action game designed to impart college-application strategies that so-called “first-generation” students may not learn anywhere else.

“They might have parents who don’t know much about the college application process and attend schools that don’t have college support,” says Zoe Corwin, research director for USC’s Pullias Center for Higher Educa-tion.

Those deficits, she adds, “have real implications for college graduation rates.”

Aims

The researchers are trying

to tackle a trifecta of issues

that disproportionately

plagues lower-income

students, such as:

1 not applying for college when they’re capable,

2 not enrolling in college even after being

accepted and

3 ”under-matching,” or choosing to attend a less-

selective school than one their academic credentials qualify them for

Ambition

A Pell Institute study found that low-income, fi rst-generation students were seven times more likely to earn bachelor’s degrees if they started at four-year institutions, but the vast majority began and ended their academic careers at public two-year and for-profi t colleges.

Mission: Admission builds on those lessons with some competitive aspects. For example, players who miss the deadline for filing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), might get into a school but might not be able to pay for it. Or they may vie for a single slot at a selective school, so those who submit an inadequate application lose out.

The online game

Graduation Strike Force has more nuanced strate-gies for finding the right college for the player’s avatar, one that balances financial, academic and cultural aspects to find the right fit.

“The games pushed me to open up and ask questions,” says student Samantha Castillo. “It re-ally helped clarify ... what you can do to change your life.” REUTERS

Benedict Cumberbatch hangs with “Sherlock” star Martin Freeman. PBS

Few shows have given viewers as much with so little as the BBC’s “Sher-lock.” Viewers perpetu-ally are left wondering whether this is the last time they will get any more. But Martin Free-man, who plays Dr. John Watson, dropped the first hint of what’s to come for the show since its third season aired in January. In an interview with The Telegraph, Freeman said “Sherlock” will resume filming early next year for what will likely be a 2015 special. That wasn’t all: His real-life partner, Amanda Abbington, joined the se-ries this year as Watson’s wife, Mary Morstan. If you don’t know your Holmes canon, stop reading now. “While we play fast and loose with the original stories, we generally fol-low the trajectory of what [Arthur] Conan Doyle did. So [Watson] gets married, and then Mary dies — so at some point presumably she’ll die,” Freeman said. EVA KIS

Two of the world’s most (in)famous singers duked it out on the basketball court Saturday. Justin Bieber and Chris Brown were playing at the BET Celebrity Basketball Game in LA on opposite teams, but luckily that didn’t make them enemies. The two had time to do some sweaty posing for the cameras after the game. Snoop Dogg (or Snoop Lion, or whatever he’s called these days) was also participating in the game on Brown’s team. No word on who won, but we hear that both Bieber and Brown showed off some mad basketball skills, while Snoop Dog busted a few hilarious dance moves.

Do your thing

What is it like making a movie about musicians with actors who aren’t primarily musicians? It’s nice to mix it up a little bit. Sometimes it’s nice to have an actor who’s singing or a singer who’s acting and not have everybody doing what they’re comfortable

doing. Keira was outside her comfort zone having to perform a song or play the guitar. While Adam [Levine], who is completely comfortable with that side of things — you couldn’t stop him from singing or playing — was more nervous around the acting side of things.

Doing ‘Once’ in America

Keira Knightley (left) plays a musician and Mark Ruff alo (right) plays an A&R guy in “Begin Again.” / THE WEINSTEIN COMPANY

Seven years ago, Irish musician-turned-filmmak-er John Carney watched his little film — “Once,” starring Glen Hansard as a street musician — blossom into a phenomenon. He has returned to the genre and to New York City with “Begin Again,” which con-cerns an A&R guy (Mark Ruffalo) who is working on a new kind of record with a shy musician (Keira Knightley).

Why did you want to return to the genre? The story is what appealed to me. I don’t really sit down thinking something should be a musical. I sit down and think about what I’m trying to get off my chest.

Like ‘Once,’ this isn’t a traditional musical. It’s realistic, and the songs rise organically from the narrative. They’re stealth musicals, aren’t they? They not like Broadway musicals where the dialogue is there to join the dots between songs. It’s the other way around.

One thing it brings up is, how do musicians these days actually make a living? That’s a huge question and one that in this film is just asked, as opposed to answered. I would not make any great claims to answering that question. It’s quite a sensitive issue for a lot of artists I know. A lot of people in this field feel they’re being taken ad-vantage of, or it’s assumed their work should be done for free. If a plumber comes to your house to fix your toilet, you have to pay him.

Interview. Director John

Carney talks about

making another

“stealth musical”

with “Begin Again.”

MATT [email protected]@metro.us

You also focus not only on a musician but on an A&R guy, who is not treated like a greed monster.I felt like exploring what it’s like for someone for whom this business was their reason to live. The discovery of new music is like the discovery of new lands. When you see an A&R man dragging around their band, you can see someone who looks like they’ve discovered an island.

This has been a summer of slightly underwhelm-ing box office returns on major film franchises, but this trend didn’t apply to “Transformers: Age of Extinction,” the fourth in the series about Hasbro battle bots that turn into cars (and in this case, also dinosaurs).

Over the three-day weekend, the Paramount behemoth assembled $100 million at the North American box office, plus another $201.3 mil-lion from international markets — a record high for 2014.

“Transformers” was the

weekend’s only major new release. In holdovers, “22 Jump Street” collected an-other $15.4 million, mak-ing its total take thus far $139 million. Last week’s winner, “Think Like a Man Too,” tumbled to fourth, with only $10.4 million in grosses; its total now stands at $48.1 million.

Meanwhile, “Snow-piercer” — the acclaimed English-language South Ko-rean thriller starring Chris Evans and Tilda Swinton — took in $162,000 from eight theaters. Its $20,250 average is promising as it spreads across the nation. MATT PRIGGE

THIS WEEK

21TELEVISION

Dean Norris picked one heck of a series to follow up “Breaking Bad.” In “Under the Dome,” Norris takes on the dastardly role of local politico Big Jim in the series based on the novel by Stephen King. The choice certainly seems to be working out for him: The series, a smash hit last summer, returns for an-other season chronicling a mysteriously cut-off town. Here, Norris lets us in on what to expect this year.

On where we fi nd Big Jim at the start of the season: “Big Jim thinks he knows what’s best for the town, and he thinks he’s inspired by the dome to do what he does. ... What happens in the first episode is that he comes to an awakening. He reevaluates his position and his kind of personal trajectory and decides that maybe a different kind of Big Jim is required to survive under the dome. Whether that turns out to

be true is what we’ll find out as the season goes on. One of the things that Big Jim is trying to deal with is seeing if there is enough food for everybody, if there is enough water for every-body and what resources are left for us to survive under the dome.”

On whether Big Jim might actually be lightening up a little bit this season: “Actually, I think so. One thing we’re talking about this year is including some redemp-tion for Big Jim. It’s actu-ally in the first episode that he has a ‘come to God’ moment where he believes that maybe his purpose in life shouldn’t be to be so nasty. And that’s a story arc that continues throughout the season: whether he has a higher purpose — a greater purpose — other than just killing people and being mean to his son.”

Big Jim Interview. Dean

Norris’ “Under the

Dome” character is

lightening up.

So King-ian

On Stephen King writing the fi rst new episode: “Can I say something about Stephen King? The fi rst episode is so Stephen King-ian, and part of it is that almost in the midst of the kind of most horrifying and tragic elements, there

are these little lines that are humorous. It was cool to see that because it’s in his books [so] it was so cool to see it in the script, too. I think you’ll see in that fi rst episode that there are moments where Big Jim maybe sees ghosts or they may be whatever they are. And while it’s a kind of a terrifying or horrifying situation, it’s also funny

to see Big Jim have to squirm with these kind of Ghosts of Christmas Past and the future and have to deal with them. It’s such a Stephen King-ian thing and it’s all present there in the fi rst episode that he wrote.”

WELLBEING

If your wallet is not in order, your fi nances probably aren’t either. / FUSE

A dear friend of mine is an entrepreneur who often complained about feeling financially blocked. One day while talking about her bills, she pulled out her wallet to pay for something. I gasped when I glanced at it. She was carrying around a tattered wristlet filled to the brim with credit cards, coins, crumpled receipts, lip gloss and God knows what else. My immedi-ate response was, “If you want to clean up your finances, you must clean up your wallet!”

One day later she texted me a picture of her shiny new red wallet, each section perfectly orga-nized. Within two weeks her business was back in action; deals that had been held up for months were closing. I believe the difference was the wallet. Once she had her personal money in order, she cleared subconscious

blocks and was able to move freely and with ease in any situation related to finances or business.

Do you feel blocked financially? Is it far too often that the deal doesn’t go through, the job doesn’t work out or sim-ply that you don’t have enough money? Many times, a financial block stems from an energetic block. Remember, energy is in everything, even in your wallet. For the sake of your finances and our economy, let’s clean up your wallet to clear your energetic connection to receiving.

If your wallet is beaten up or overstuffed, buy a new one that’s clean, beautiful and can hold all you need to carry. Your wallet reflects your relationship to money. Is it ripped and filled with old receipts? Is it old and dirty? A wallet isn’t just an accessory, it’s where you store your money. So make sure you love it! Don’t be reluctant to invest in one that makes you feel good.

Your new, clean wallet will energetically support you and make a statement to the universe that you’re ready to receive. Respect your money, and your money will respect you.

YOUR WALLET IS MORE THAN STORAGE

Auspicious colors

In the red? Choose a red wallet When picking out a new wallet, be mindful of its color. In the feng shui tradition, certain colors welcome abundance, such as gold, red and green. Bust out the sparkly gold or the radi-ant red. Go big or go home with this one.

Feng shui expert Kate MacKinnon says, “Like everything in feng shui, the most important way to make space is to clear clutter. So make sure your wallet is clear of clut-ter (paper, receipts, etc.) and organized.”

‘The Maneuver.’

New documentary

is seeking funds

through Kickstarter.

Dr. Henry Heimlich, whose maneuver has saved un-told numbers of choking victims since he devised it in 1974, believes it still has untapped potential.

From upscale restau-rants to your local diner, you’ve surely seen the choking victim sign posted somewhere discreet but visible. The Heimlich ma-neuver marks 40 years this summer, and the doctor, 94, is taking part in “The Maneuver,” a new docu-mentary seeking funds through Kickstarter.

Heimlich was first in-spired to develop the tech-nique when he read an arti-cle in The New York Times. “Among other things, it mentioned that among children under 1 year old, there are many choking deaths. It was in large num-bers in adults [too].”

Given the strength of the rib cage to protect vital organs, Heimlich hypothe-sized that pressing the dia-phragm would compress the lungs, releasing the excess air they store even during exhalation. He test-ed his theory on an anes-thetized dog in his lab at Jewish Hospital of Cincin-nati, where he was director of surgery. “[I] pushed up on the diaphragm and the meat flew across the room. I did that repeatedly, and I

knew that I had a possible cure for choking,” he said.

Instead of submitting his findings to a medical journal, where “it would take years to get the word out,” he says, Heimlich went straight to a well-known medical columnist. Just four days after publi-cation, a reader told The Seattle Times about saving his neighbor’s wife with the maneuver.

And he says that the

method still has untapped potential, specifically when it comes to drowning victims, whose lungs often contain water. Heimlich is adamant that his maneu-ver should be the go-to first aid in such cases.

Public input

The power of the crowd As “The Maneuver” seeks the public’s sup-port through Kickstarter, Heimlich himself credits ordinary people with help-ing to expand the applica-tion of the maneuver. One

woman fi gured out a way to perform the Heimlich on herself, using the railing

of her porch, when she was choking and wrote to Heimlich of her discovery. The doctor has since de-veloped modifi ed versions of the maneuver for use on infants and for children whose arms are not long enough to wrap around an adult’s stomach.

From left to right are Forbes “30 under 30” members Edun Full, Kane Sarhan, Meg Gill and Mark Arnoldy . EVERY DAY CONNECT, FAIRFIELD INN AND SUITES

Navigating the world of business can be tough — especially when you’re in the early stages of your career. Finding a mentor can be the key to success.Enter the Every Day Con-nect campaign, a new proj-ect sponsored by Fairfield Inn and Suites as a way to support the connections between young profession-als and the mentors who have encouraged them.

“I think mentorship is important to everyone, but a lot of people are afraid to reach out,” says Fairfield Inn’s Vice President of Global Brand Management Shruti Buckley. “But right now the workforce is so competitive, so it’s more important than ever to build those relationships.”

A survey commissioned by Fairfield revealed that 66 percent of professionals say personal relationships have helped them in their careers. We talked to sev-eral young entrepreneurs named to the Forbes “30 under 30” 2014 list for their suggestions on how foster a strong mentoring network.

Personal relationships are more important than ever in the job world.

Find and keep a career mentor

1 Don’t think of it as formally fi nding a ‘mentor’ Kane Sarhan, who co-founded @Enstitute, a program that matches young people with entrepreneurial appren-ticeships, says the best mentoring relationships come about organi-cally. “We fi nd with a lot of our students, mentors just develop naturally once you fi nd someone you connect with,” he says. “Those really strong personal relationships are long lasting.”

2 Find someone you can bounce ideas off of “It’s always good to have diff erent people, opinions and perspec-tives around,” explains Edun Full, the creator of SunSaluter, a device that makes solar panels more effi cient. Full says her mentor has been instrumental in the early growth of her company. “Just talking things through and weighing the pros and cons was really key to making the right decisions,” she says.

3 Be persistent without being annoying Full also stresses that you shouldn’t give up if there is a particular person you want to con-nect with. “If someone doesn’t respond to your email [right away], there are so many reasons why,” she points out. At the same time, remember to respect your mentor’s time. “Be humble and assertive, but not necessarily aggressive,” says Meg Gill, an executive with Golden Road Brewing.

4 Don’t be afraid to reach out If you are shy about approaching someone in your fi eld, don’t be. Fairfi eld’s survey reveals that 77 percent of em-ployed adults said they were willing to help new grads fi nd work. But it’s important that young people show that they are serious.

“I didn’t go out look-ing for mentors,” says Gill. “I went out looking to learn. A lot of people don’t just let someone come up to them, so you have to be passionate about something.”

5 Let your mentor know the impact he or she has had Always remember to let your mentors and advisors know that you appreciate them. “I’m constantly showing gratitude toward my mentors,” says Sarhan. “A lot of times, one prob-lem with my generation is the lack of humility,” says the 26-year old. He says that doing things as simple as sending thank you cards, birthday presents and just calling to catch up can go a long way.

6 You should be working to help your mentor, too Mentoring isn’t a one-way street. Mark Arnoldy is the Executive Director of Nyaya Health, which works to bring health-care to remote parts of Nepal. He says younger workers shouldn’t discount their unique takes on the world. “If you are sincere in your generosity, great things will come your way and ‘networking’ can be a source of joy rather than something slimy and shallow,” he says.

Equal measures a pleasureRe: ‘Tom Foreman just isn’t very funny’ (Metro, June 24) Thank you, Met-ro, for Tom Foreman. Every time I see his column I feel encouraged and anticipate an intelligent, coura-geous, informative and acute commentary, which invariably reveals the pitfalls of massive trends and soothes my unspoken worries. I believe one reason why letter writer Jonathan Hecht deems, oh so assuredly, Foreman unwitty is that the wit-ticism is of the Irish bull type: It turns onto himself. Mr. Foreman is too com-passionate to condemn. Thank you for a choice of columnists that represent all points of view. EMMA PREVIATO, VIA EMAIL

Don’t give ’em an inchRe: ‘Guns make some safer’ (Metro, June 26-29) There is no such thing as reasonable or sensible gun legislation when lawmakers are focused on restricting or denying Sec-ond Amendment rights to law-abiding citizens. The majority of gun laws do nothing to address the is-sues involving criminal use of fi rearms. Gun owners have learned that legisla-tors cannot be trusted to do the right thing. As soon as one right is compro-mised, the lawmakers come back for more.CHUCK FAZIO, VIA EMAIL

One last look

Wright will get second opinion

The Mets still expect injured captain David Wright to return to

the lineup Monday in Atlanta, but he’ll get one last second opin-ion on his injured left rotator cuff Monday morning. “He could

walk in tomor-row and still have

discomfort, and they can say, ‘Well, you’re going to have to rest it longer.’ That may lead in a diff erent

direction,” manager Terry Collins said Sunday. “I’m not

planning on that.”

5Options to replace Jason Kidd as coach

With the stunning news Saturday night that Nets head coach Jason Kidd may not be long for the borough of Brooklyn, the team is left in an unex-pected lurch.

Kidd reportedly made a power play to take over complete control of personnel decisions — including a push to trade franchise center Brook Lopez for the Bucks’ Larry Sanders — and was rebuffed. The resulting rift between Kidd and ownership looks to be ir-reparable. So if Kidd does

end up in Milwaukee, or elsewhere, the Nets are going to be in need of a new head coach.

And according to Ya-hoo! Sports’ Adrian Wojn-

arowski, “the Russians are done with Kidd,” so they better start looking for a new coach immediately.

Metro New York tosses out a few ideas as to who could replace Kidd on the Nets’ bench. Ownership should have plenty of money to throw at the candidate they want, but they don’t have a lot of choices, as most teams in need of a coach are al-ready making their picks.

MARK [email protected]@metro.us

MARK JACKSON IS LIKELY CONTENT TOWORK ON TELEVISION IF HE DOESN’TGET HIS DEMANDS FROM THE NETS.

GETTY IMAGES1Mark JacksonThe man many Knicks fans wanted to replace Mike Woodson — instead of Derek Fisher, who was eventually hired — might be the most-desired Nets head coach, too. Jackson is a Brooklyn native and went to Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School in Fort Greene. He also played for St. John’s and with the Knicks from 1987 to 1992 and again in 2001-2002. He was also successful in mold-ing Golden State into a Western Conference power during his tenure from 2011 to 2014. But his relationship with

ownership soured and he was fi red despite a 51-31 season in 2013-2014. He’ll want a lot of money from Brooklyn and a lot of

power.

4Ettore Messina

If the Nets are looking to get adventurous, Messina might be the candidate. The 54-year-old Italian is one of the greatest European coaches ever. He’s won four Euroleague titles (1998, 2001, 2006, 2008), most recently with CSKA Moscow. He left this month and has report-edly discussed joining the Spurs as an assistant. As the preeminent coach in the Russian League — where he has won fi ve titles — you can bet Nets owner Mikhail Prokhorov is very famil-iar with him.3

Tyronn LueLue just signed a deal with the Cavaliers to become the highest-paid assistant coach in the league under fi rst-time NBA coach David Blatt. The 10-year NBA veteran point guard has devel-oped a reputation as the next big thing in coach-ing. He may have been an outside candidate for the Knicks’ job, but they zeroed in on Fisher after Steve Kerr turned them down.

It might be complicat-ed to lure him away from that newly signed deal with Cleveland, but he is an exciting name. Lue spent time working with Doc Divers in Boston

and followed him to the Clippers.

Should the Nets care to re-sign Paul Pierce, Lue might be a way to lure him back and keep Kevin Garnett from retir-ing. Maybe the former point guard could unlock the puzzle that is Deron Williams’ recent career as well.

2George KarlThere’s no question Karl is the opposite of Tyronn Lue. He’s 63 years old, has coached fi ve diff er-ent teams, and he won’t earn you raves from the media if he is hired. But he wins basketball games — a lot of them, in fact.

The 2013 NBA Coach of the Year, after which he was fi red by Denver, has said he wants an-other shot in the league. He sat out this year as an analyst for ESPN. He’s made the playoff s in 22 of the 25 years he’s coached, but he’s never won a title. And he’s only advanced out of the fi rst round once in the last 10 times he’s made the playoff s.

Karl is fully recovered from a bout with neck and throat cancer in 2010 and has already thrown his hat into the ring with the Lakers, who are also looking for a new coach.

Karl knows how to coach and he knows how to coach veterans. Unlike Mike D’Antoni, Karl’s system will work much better with the personnel in place. But if you are looking for a sexy hire, this is not it.

5Mike D’AntoniYou can bet Nets fans wouldn’t be too keen on seeing the former Knicks head coach take over across the East River. But he’s certainly an option out there after being fi red by the Lakers. He had tremendous success in Phoenix and was saddled with terrible rosters in New York and Los Angeles, so it’s not crazy to think he deserves another chance so quickly. The roster as it’s constructed would not be ideal for D’Antoni’s system, however.

MIKE D’ANTONI SEEMS ANUNLIKELY CHOICE DUE TO THE

NETS’ AGING ROSTER.GETTY IMAGES

By the numbers

$6.5MThe Cavaliers have reportedly signed Tyronn Lue to a four-year, $6.5 million deal to be the highest-paid assistant ever. Kidd was making $10.5 million over four years as Nets head coach.

By the numbers

1,131George Karl has 1,131 wins in his career, with 423 of those coming while coaching the Nuggets in his most recent stop.

6Karl is ranked sixth all time in NBA coaching victories, behind Don Nelson, Lenny Wilkens, Jerry Sloan, Pat Riley and Phil Jackson.

1,887Karl ranks eighth all time in total games coached. Dick Motta and Bill Fitch are the only people who have coached more games, but they don’t have more wins.

It was a close call for both, but despite a combined total of three goals scored after the 87th minute Sunday, the two favorites marched on to the quarterfinals in Brazil.

Netherlands 2, Mexico 1Mexico was on the precipice of making its first World Cup quarterfinal since 1986 when the Dutch crushed El Tri with two late goals to end those dreams.

Giovani Dos Santos scored in the 48th minute to put Mexico on top, 1-0. From there, the brilliant goal keeping of Guillermo Ochoa kept Netherlands off the scoreboard until the waning minutes of the match.

Wesley Sneijder rocketed one into the left side of the net off a rebound from just outside the 18-yard box in the 88th minute to tie the Dutch up with

Mexico.Arjen Robben’s

run in stoppage time crushed Mexican dreams completely when he earned a penalty in the box on former Red Bulls midfielder Rafa Marquez.

Klaas Jan Huntelaar put in the penalty kick in the 94th minute to give Netherlands its fourth trip to the Round of 8 all-time.

Costa Rica 1, Greece 1 (Costa Rica 5-3 on PKs)Greece pulled off a miraculous comeback for the second straight game, but they couldn’t finish this one off in extra time.

Bryan Ruiz put the Costa Ricans up 1-0 in the 52nd minute on a lightly struck left-footed shot from just outside the box. But it looked to be enough until Socratis Papastathopoulos scored off a rebound deep in the box in the 91st minute to tie it up.

Extra time ended scoreless, so they went to penalty kicks, where Greece’s Theofanis Gekas missed the fourth attempt and Costa Rica went a perfect 5-for-5.

Altidore update

U.S. head coach Jurgen

Klinsmann would not say

for sure this past weekend

whether injured star striker

Jozy Altidore would be

available for Tuesday’s

game against Belgium (4

p.m., ESPN) but remained

“hopeful.”

• “Every day is a big step forward with Jozy,” Klinsmann said. “We are optimistic we’ll have him be a part of the Belgium game.”

• The forward did not par-ticipate in soccer-related activities at practice on Saturday, according to reports, and was seen jogging during the ses-sion. Klinsmann may use Altidore off the bench. MARK OSBORNE

Rangers general manager Glen Sather delivered an unmistakable challenge to his pending free agents on Saturday.

“[If ] you move on, it doesn’t always work,” Sather told reporters. “You have to decide what’s the important thing: Winning or mak-ing a few more dollars someplace else? My book, it’s always winning.”

The Rangers’ run to

the Stanley Cup Final may lead to a free agency period in which useful components Brian Boyle, Dominic Moore, Benoit Pouliot and Anton Stral-man are offered deals by rival franchises the reigning Eastern Confer-ence champions cannot match.

Much of the available cap space will be ear-marked for restricted free agents Derick Brassard, Chris Kreider, Mats Zuc-carello and John Moore, all of whose representa-tives Sather said he has contacted.

“Realistically, I think some of the guys have to pull their horns in a bit,” Sather said. “We liked everybody. [We’d] like to keep everyone together.”

NHL. The Rangers

are likely to lose a

few key players due

to cap issues when

free agency begins

tomorrow.

Cap concerns

The Rangers will have to

be judicious with their

money when free agency

begins July 1.

• $45,692,500: Salary the Rangers have commit-ted to next season

• $69 million: The salary cap set by the NHL on Saturday.

• 5: Number of restricted free agents

• 6: Number of unre-stricted free agents

Moving on

Brodeur to hit free agency

The biggest name in Devils history appears to be on the move.

The Devils have $59.285 million tied up in 17 players. Their needs are scoring, speed and a backup goaltender as it ap-pears Martin Brodeur may sign a free agent contract with another organization.

A report by TVA Sports in Montreal listed the Leafs, Penguins, Bruins and Blackhawks as the teams most inter-ested in the future Hall of Famer. DENIS GORMAN
