This is a group of young Kuwaiti military officers who are preparing to go to Young Officer’s courses run by the British Military. They come to the Defence School of Languages for 16 weeks to improve their English skills, after having spent three months in an English college in the south of England. The course is divided into two phases. The first phase is 10 weeks with the main focus being on general language. The second phase is 6 weeks and concentrates on the military language they will need to have other skills such as giving presentations (using powerpoint). By the end of the 16 weeks, students sit a STANAG Level 2 exam (language level set by NATO) in all four skills. This lesson comes in Week Two of Phase 1. Students need to be able to use the narrative tenses in speaking and writing for Level 2 and this is a revision of the past simple, past continuous and past perfect. I use English File Intermediate as the topic of sport is of interest to the students.
