In the hope of identifying the assailants, Transit Police on Tuesday released video that shows a group of men and women who were caught on camera pummeling passen-gers on a Red Line train over the weekend.

Transit Police said the fight broke out around 9 p.m. Sunday following a verbal dispute, as the train neared Broadway MBTA Station.

Three passengers in total were assaulted — one man and two women.

The argument prompted the suspects to attack the original victim, causing two nearby women to intervene. The women had no prior re-

lationship to the first victim, police said, and attempted to persuade the group to stop the beating when the suspects turned on them.

The female suspects are described as white, between 18 and 25 years old. One is blonde and one is brunette. The male suspects are de-scribed as white — one in his late teens, two in their 30s, and one in his 40s.

The video, which appears to have been captured by cell phone, is available at Metro.us/Boston.

T’s derailment probe hones in on Green Line operator

An investigation into what caused a Green Line trolley to derail Monday afternoon is nar-rowing in on the actions of the operator, who has been taken off the job as officials examine the circumstances of the acci-dent.

Ten people were injured at 12:20 p.m. Monday — includ-

ing the driver — when the Riverside-bound D line trolley veered off the tracks, causing another trolley to stop short behind it.

A thorough inspection of the track and signal systems revealed no defects nor anoma-lies, and preliminary testing found no mechanical issues with the trolley’s equipment, according to MBTA Spokes-woman Kelly Smith.

“Investigators continue to take a close look at the perfor-mance of the motorperson who was operating the train at the time,” Smith said.

Although T officials said they will not name the opera-

tor, local news stations WCVB and CBS Boston identified the driver as 48-year-old Sydley Gardner, a five-year employee with a history of spotty road driving.

According to the reports,

Gardner has a slew of motor vehicle driving infractions in records from the Massachu-setts Registry of Motor Vehicles. They allegedly include speed-ing, failure to stop and several license suspensions for failure to make required payments, WCVB reported.

When asked if speed was a factor in the crash, Smith said, “It is certainly among the fac-tors being considered but the investigation continues. No concrete determinations have been made at this time.”

“The MBTA is conducting the investigation, which will take as long as is necessary to establish all the facts,” she

added.Boston EMS Spokesman

Nick Martin said 10 patients were transported following the derailment, “all with rela-tively minor injuries.” MBTA Spokesman Joe Pesaturo said Monday that many victims complained of back pain.

Service on the D and C branches was suspended through Monday evening, though crews were able to restore Green Line service in time for the Tuesday morning commute.

Investigation. An operator reportedly has a slew of motor vehicle violations on his record.

North End

Cops arrest man accused of Valentine’s Day assault The man who allegedly assaulted a woman and then took her photo on Valentine’s Day in the North End was arraigned on charges of indecent assault and battery Tuesday, though

his attorney said he is confident the suspect will be exonerated.

According to the Boston Police Department, the victim recognized her alleged attacker as he played basketball on Monday evening. She then contacted authorities, who rushed to the scene and arrested him.

A defense attorney for Ross Currier, 26, of Salem

Street, said in court that his client is an innocent man; a professional who was with his fiancee on the night of the attack.

Currier was released on personal recognizance, and ordered to avoid contact with the victim and wear a GPS bracelet.

At about 1:11 a.m. on Feb. 14, officers responded to the scene of the crime near

Unity Street in the North End.

The victim told police that while entering her foyer, a suspect pushed his way in behind her and indecently assaulted her. The victim further reported that the suspect then took a photo with his cellphone and fled the area toward Tileston Street. MORGAN ROUSSEAU

A group dedicated to getting Boston’s waste down to zero in the next 26 years is pleading with the city, “Don’t waste this opportunity.”

The Boston Zero Waste Task Force released a plan Tuesday that aims to move Boston’s overall diversion recycling rate to 50 percent by 2020, 75 per-cent by 2030, and zero by 2040.

To get there, the city must focus on reducing, reusing, and of course, recycling, according to the group, which is urging the city to extend producer re-sponsibility, implement a ban on single use plastic bags and Styrofoam containers, ensure

that recycling and food waste receptacles are available in all public spaces, and manufacture and remanufacture products lo-cally. The group also suggests that the city create and fund a reuse coordinator position to help develop and support local reuse businesses and expand donation programs.

“Boston has the opportunity to get into the spotlight nation-ally and create a world class program,” said Alex Papali of the Boston Recycling Coalition and Clean Water Action.

The recommendations fol-low a series of meetings since June 2013. The task force rep-resents small start-ups, large businesses and institutions, policy experts, environmental advocates, municipal agencies and both current and hopeful future workers.

From the report

For every ton of waste that is

recycled instead of disposed, the

city would save at least $56. About

240,000 tons of residential waste is

currently disposed annually.

• Despite recent improvements, residential recycling rates in

Boston have failed to pass 20 percent.

• Factoring in the better perform-ing commercial sector yields an approximate 30 percent rate, compared to a national average of 34 percent.

Recycle, reduce, reuse. Task force aims to help Boston eliminate its waste output by 2040.

Green Lane Project

Boston to get help building protected bike lanes

Boston is one of six U.S. cities selected by national cycling organization PeopleForBikes to participate in a new, in-tensive two-year program to develop protected bike lanes.

The Green Lane Project works with U.S. cities to

speed the installation of pro-tected bike lanes, also known as cycle tracks, around the country. The on-street lanes are separated from traffic by curbs, planters, parked cars or posts, and according to PeopleForBikes, increase bike ridership, particularly among novices.

“Over the next six years, I want to take Boston from one of the best bicycling cities

in the country to one of the best in the world. Investing in protected bike lanes is a critical path to that success,” Mayor Marty Walsh said.

The six cities were chosen from more than 100 U.S. cities that submitted letters of interest for the program. Other selected cities include Atlanta, Denver, Indianapolis, Pittsburgh and Seattle. MORGAN ROUSSEAU

For years, Kristen Merlin’s name was a frequent sight on signs outside bars and lounges across the South Shore.

Now her name can be seen on TV screens across the coun-try.

Merlin, a Hanson native, is the latest Bay Stater to compete on NBC’s singing competition “The Voice.” Joining her this season is Noah Lis, a 22-year-old Westfield State University senior from Palmer.

To qualify, the 29-year-old Merlin performed “Something More” by Sugarland. The per-formance prompted Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine and singer Shakira to fight for Mer-lin to be on their teams.

“She’s very important to me,” Shakira said during Mer-lin’s audition.

Merlin ended up picking Shakira to be her coach and to help her make it through the upcoming competition rounds.

Merlin said she blacked out when her audition started.

“It’s nerve-wracking because you have 90 seconds. … Thank-

fully, I got two of those people to turn around,” she said.

Watching herself perform on TV later on was “weird,” she said.

“I hate listening to myself,” said Merlin, adding that “I was pretty happy with what hap-pened.”

While away from the show, Merlin has continued to per-form at several establishments in the state. She said her fan base has definitely grown since appearing on TV.

“It’s uplifting to know I have such a solid base behind me,” she said. “It’s awesome to reach

a whole new fan base from that one airing.”

Lis, who performed Billy Paul’s “Me and Mrs. Jones” to win his spot, said in his online biography that his grandfather inspired him to pursue a career in music and he hopes to make his grandfather proud.

Before competing on TV, Merlin said she worked as her own manager and did every-thing herself. Now that she’s appeared on a nationally tele-vised singing competition show, it’s a little harder.

“It’s overwhelming, but great because I spent so many years knocking down doors to get in and now I’m pleased to have people approaching me to have me play at their venues,” she said.

Joining the club

Merlin and Lis are far from the

only Massachusetts residents

to have competed in singing

competition shows.

• During the fourth season of “The Voice,” Amherst native Michelle Chamuel was the runner-up, making it to the fi nale.

• James Massone, of Wakefi eld, was eliminated in the quarterfi nals on the second season of “The Voice.”

• Former senator Scott Brown’s daughter, Ayla Brown, was one of the Top 16 fi nalists on FOX’s “American Idol” in 2006.

P lane tracked to Strait of Malacca

Malaysia’s military believes a jetliner missing for almost four days turned and flew hundreds of kilometers to the west after it last made contact with civil-ian air traffic control off the country’s east coast, a senior officer told Reuters on Tuesday.

In one of the most baffling mysteries in recent aviation his-tory, a massive search operation for the Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777-200ER has so far found no trace of the aircraft.

Malaysian authorities have previously said flight MH370 disappeared about an hour after it took off from Kuala Lumpur for the Chinese capital Beijing.

“It changed course after Kota Bharu and took a lower altitude. It made it into the Malacca Strait,” the senior military officer, who has been briefed on investigations, told Reuters.

That would appear to rule out sudden catastrophic me-chanical failure, as it would mean the plane flew approxi-mately 350 miles at least after its last contact with air traffic control, although its transpon-der and other tracking systems were off.

A non-military source fa-miliar with the investigations said the report was one of sev-eral theories and was being checked.

At the time it lost contact with civilian air traffic control, the plane was roughly midway between Malaysia’s east coast town of Kota Bharu and the southern tip of Vietnam, flying at 35,000 feet. REUTERS

Turnaround. The missing plane was fl ying above Malaysia’s west coast.

No leadership

Legal limbo hampers probe into missing jet

Investigators trying to solve the disappearance without a trace of a Malaysia Airlines jetliner face an extremely rare challenge that could hinder their eff orts: They lack the powers of a formal air safety investigation.

Four days after Flight MH370 went missing in mid-air, no nation has stepped forward to initiate and lead an offi cial probe, leaving a formal leadership vacuum that industry experts say ap-pears unprecedented.

Malaysian offi cials are conducting their own informal investigations, in cooperation with other governments and foreign agencies, but they lack the le-gal powers that would come with a formal international probe under U.N.-sanctioned rules.

Those powers include the legal rights to take testimony from all witnesses and other parties, the right to have exclusive control over the release of information and the ability to centralize a vast amount of fragmentary evidence. REUTERS

On Sunday, Justin Bieber played a surprise show at SXSW. (Read: Drove the nail in the coffin of any notion that SXSW is still all about independent spirit.) One of the best things to have come out of this was a University of Texas student named Maria Nunez tweeting a selfie of her reaction to the performance, which we have included at left. Bieber sang his hit “As Long As You Love Me” and announced, “This next song goes out to my baby” — while gazing to the side of the stage where there stood one Selena Gomez. OMG!!! It would have been so much better if he were gazing at Maria Nunez though, wouldn’t it?

Talking points

Bynes holds back

Amanda Bynes has behaved since returning to Twitter this month — at least offi cially. In Touch reports the troubled former child star uses a secret second Twitter account to be her old self under the pseudonym Ashley Barks. Bynes denies it, taking to her offi cial Twitter to write, “FYI This is my only twitter ac-count, I have no secret twitter accounts.”

Just buying Miley

George Clooney’s Lake Como, Italy retreat may not be so peaceful if Miley Cyrus goes through with a reported plan to purchase a home near the “Gravity” star. “Miley is eagerly anticipating her fi rst major real estate purchase,” a source tells Radar Online. “She fi gures, what could be better than a place in Italy near her favorite A-list star?”

Jemaine Clement: What he does ‘In the Shadows’

“Flight of the Conchords” star Jemaine Clement is taking on the vampire phenomenon, teaming up with co-director and best friend Taika Waititi for “What We Do in the Shad-ows,” a mockumentary chronicling the daily — or nightly — lives of four ev-eryday undead bloodsuckers living in the city. In Austin, Texas, to promote the film at SXSW, we sat for a conversa-tion with the undead New Zealander.

Were there challenges in constructing a narrative as a documentary?Yes. And we were also trying to get some action scenes in it, stuff like fights and special ef-fects and let people improvise. But it also frees you up for things. ... We wrote a script, but we didn’t show it to any of the actors. Because when people try to act like they’re in a documentary, I feel like you can tell.

How much of that original script is the same as what you ended up with? That’s a great question and I don’t know. I would be inter-ested to see that, to see how similar they are. But I haven’t ever compared them. I haven’t looked at the script since.

Were there any vampire elements or cliches you wanted to avoid referencing? We’ve got “Twilight” referenc-es in it, which I kind of regret. While we were filming it, the last “Twilight” movie was coming out and we wanted to get a shot of them taking down the “Twilight” poster as Nick is getting over being a vampire, saying this vampire trend of the teens has gone again and you have to wait for the next one.

Interview. The “Flight of the Conchords” star is at SXSW as a vampire.

Q&A: Flight of the Choncords?

How was it co-directing with Taika Waititi? We’re very used to working with each other, and we talked about the idea for so long that we had very similar ideas of how it’s going to be. Amazing-

ly we never argued. But when we fi rst started doing theater shows, there were times that I thought we were going to punch each other — even on stage. But those kinds of con-fl icts have been worked out.

Messing with Texas

SXSW Music kicks into gear As the fi lm and tech portion of SXSW wraps up, Ned Ehrbar passes the coverage baton to Pat Healy as he lands in Austin, Texas, to scour clubs for unknown bands and perform-ers who will soon be hugely popular and take in a few of the already hugely popular acts

who over the past few years have joined in on the musical media frenzy that overtakes Austin every March. Gaga will be there, delivering the keynote address and performing, and it’s rumored that Jay Z and Kanye have something planned. Ralph Fiennes isn’t often called to do comedy. It’s a shame, as “The Grand Budapest Hotel” proves it’s one of his many talents. The latest from Wes Anderson stars Fiennes as an alternately snooty and juvenile concierge accused of murder in the lead-up to World War II. This meant finding a way to strut his stuff with a director famous for meticulous detail.

Apparently Wes Anderson wrote the part for you. How do you handle that when he approaches you for the role?I think the fact that he wrote [the part] for me emerged re-cently. He said, “When I wrote this I thought of you,” but it didn’t quite have the pressure of “I’m writing this for you.” It’s flattering and great, but I still go, “What bit of me did you see?”

His writing is very precise. Is there wiggle room once actors come in?One of the things that I wanted

to do with Wes is find out where [the role] would be pitched. I think at first I approached it with too much affectation and an “over-Englishy” slightly forced dic-tion. And he said, “No, no, no, relax that. It should be closer to your voice.” I think I knew what he meant. But sometimes he wanted me to push it back again. There’s a dial, and sometimes he’d say, “Let’s have it more affected,” or to make it a little more flamboyant.

What is it that attracts actors to Anderson, especially given how stylized his fi lms are?I think the actors like what the challenge is. You realize quickly that there’s a challenge in the delivery of the lines and the rhythm and often it’s con-nected to the camera moves. The challenge is to keep that spirit of likeness and at the same time you got to hit your mark. He wants the actors to invent and to breathe life into what he’s written. So he has the choreography mapped out, and all the actors know that. Part of the delight is trying to get it right and keep it seem-ingly spontaneous.

Q&A

Hitting the books

Anderson made up his own country, but it’s inspired by real nations in mid-Europe. Did you do research?I knew a bit about [WWII-era Europe] from another fi lm I did, called “Sunshine.” ... This was completely diff erent. Wes gave me this book [“The World of Yesterday” by Stefan Zweig], which he says in

the credits gave him a lot of inspiration for the feeling of this. It’s a brilliant book. It’s a Viennese-Jewish intellectual that’s witnessing the shift to the rise of fascism. A very disturbing, heart-breaking book. That was my required reading. Also, “Beware of Pity,” another novel by Stefan Zweig.

11HOME +PLUSJonathan Adler is a busy guy. Besides expanding his burgeon-ing interiors brand into the world of fashion — including a recent collaboration with Toms — he’s opening his 27th bou-tique, in Boston at The Street in Chestnut Hill. We caught up with the iconic designer to talk home trends, key apartment updates and where to find good vintage in the Hub.

Current trends

“Pantone named Radiant Orchid the color of the year, and they’re actually correct. So I’m totally feeling purple. I’m still enjoying emerald and I’ve never said no to either of those strong colors, tempered with a dash of calming gray,” says Adler about the color of the moment. “The truth is we’re lucky to live in an era where anything goes, which is fantas-tic. So the trend is more hyped up eclecticism. ‘Love what you love and it will work’ is truly what’s happening in the world, and I couldn’t be happier.”

Splurge-worthy home item“Definitely a chic and comfy sofa,” says Adler. “A lot of people settle for a sofa but

you shouldn’t settle. Buy a sofa that you’ll be happy to take with you when you move apartments. It needs to be comfy and couture.”

Make your entryway special“An entryway is like the introduction to an essay — it’s a microcosm of what people can expect as they enter [your home]. So treat your entryway with care. I believe in making it super special,” says Adler. His criteria: “You need a place

to put on your shoes, take one last look in the mirror, and throw your keys and mail down when you come home.”

A must-have

“You always need an extra lamp. Lighting is under-considered,” explains Adler. “Lighting should come from multiple sources: There should be ceiling, wall, floor, table — and all on dimmers. That will make you look more twinkling and glamorous than you think you are.”

Let your inner glamour-puss go wild, and a bar cart is a great place to do that because it announces to the world that you’re a little bit louche. And that you entertain. Outline of the outline

‘Reform is necessary’Under the proposal, Fannie

Mae and Freddie Mac would be wound down and replaced with a new government reinsurer called the Federal Mortgage

Insurance Corp., which would only provide assis-

tance after private creditors had taken a hit. The entity would be fi nanced by fees on lenders who want the government backstop.

Included in the outline is a mandate that strong un-derwriting standards be built into the new system.

“There is near unanimous agreement that our current housing fi nance system is not sustainable in the long term and reform is neces-sary to help strengthen and stabilize the economy,” said Johnson. “This bipartisan eff ort will provide the market the certainty it needs, while preserving fair and aff ord-able housing throughout the country.”

Remember the bad old days of real estate? A new outline may help preventforeclosure fever from ruining the economy again. / COLOURBOX

Real estate. Government attempts to replace Fannie Mae and Freddie MacThe leaders of the U.S. Sen-ate Banking Committee on Tuesday outlined plans for legislation to wind down government-owned mortgage financiers Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac that they said would continue to provide access to long-term, fixed-rate mortgages.

Committee Chairman Tim Johnson, a Democrat, and Sen. Mike Crapo, the panel’s top Republican, announced the agreement after working for months to bridge a partisan divide with the hope of mov-ing legislation this year.

Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, which own or guarantee 60 percent of all U.S. home loans, provide a steady source of mortgage funds by buying loans from lenders and packag-ing them into securities they sell to investors.

Their central role in hous-ing finance led the govern-ment to bail them out to the tune of $187.5 billion when they ran into trouble amid the financial crisis of 2007-2009.

Lawmakers from both parties want to revamp the $10 trillion mortgage market to make it less likely taxpayers will ever be put on the hook again.

Under the outline from Johnson and Crapo, private interests would take the first 10 percent of any mortgage losses, before an emergency

government backstop would kick in.

“This agreement moves us closer to ending the five-year status quo and beginning the wind down of Fannie and Fred-die, while protecting taxpayers with strong private capital,” Crapo said in a statement. REUTERS

Cyber cooking . IBM’s Watson evolves from trivia master to chef In another move toward our eventual enslavement by ro-bots, computers can now whip up delicious culinary delights. Price: FreePlatforms: iOS and AndroidRadiohead gave the option to buy their last two albums for any price. Now they have a free app. We’re not sure how the band makes money, except that they don’t really need to ever again.

Created with design firm Universal Everything, Poly-fauna is an experimental app. How experimental? It doesn’t come with instructions. It’s like the old computer game “Myst,” which also allows you to explore faintly alien, magi-cal worlds. There’s no mission apart from discovering all it has to offer, which you do by shifting and tilting your phone, pointing it in certain

directions (while looking to onlookers like you’ve lost all faculties).

There is one instruction: “Follow the [floating red dot].” Doing so (if you can find and successfully woo it) sends you into new mini-worlds, offer-ing fresh, pleasingly low-res landscapes with trees and mountains, speckled with rain and looming debris. You can doodle on the screen. The app allows you to do whatever you like, provided you’re into a meditative time-suck that plays soundscapes taken from sessions for Radiohead’s last album, “The King of Limbs.” Polyfauna is pure texture, with little but mind-clearing escape. It essentially just is, and for a band who no longer have anything to prove, that’s a step in the right direction.

When it comes to colorectal cancer — which comprises co-lon cancer and rectal cancer — not all tumors are created equal. As with new developments in cancer research in general, the big news in treatment is genetic sequencing: defining the biol-ogy of a tumor and tailoring targeted treatment, rather than the old one-pill-fits-all approach.

“Precision medicine is the buzzword,” says Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Cen-ter’s Dr. Rona Yaeger, a colorec-tal cancer researcher with the American Cancer Society. “Al-ready there are new drugs in clinical trials that will come on

Colorectal cancer: What you do now could save your life Start early. Genetic

sequencing is the

treatment of the future,

but prevention is best.

the market soon.”With precision medicine

and improved surgery tech-niques, doctors are able to more accurately target tumors. The result is less treatment for colorectal cancer patients.

“We’re now understanding that we’ve been overtreating, and we don’t always need all that chemotherapy and radia-tion,” explains Yaeger. “Radia-tion in particular is something we want to avoid if possible, especially in young people, be-cause one of the possible side effects is infertility.”

Young people? Colorectal cancer is often thought of as an older person’s disease. Yae-ger says that the average age of colorectal cancer patients is 70, but that the incidence of colon cancer is increasing in those 25-50.

“That’s what we’re seeing,” she says.

“The problem is that in young-er people, colorectal cancer is more likely to be advanced. Young people do not seek treat-ment until they present with symptoms, such as bloody stool or a change in bowel move-ment. With young people, it’s beyond a polyp.”

Polyps are pre-cancerous ruptures in the bowel wall that are detected in the course of colonoscopy exams and sim-ply removed. Colonoscopies — during which patients are asleep and can head home that same day — are an effective tool in prevent- ing

cancer. They’re usually given at age 50 or above, unless there’s family history of colorectal can-cer. “It’s still our best tool for preventing fatalities overall,” says Yaeger.

Despite treatment advances, prevention is still key for any-one. Two ways to slash your risk? You’ve heard them before: a healthy (specifically high-fiber) diet and regular exercise.

“A large BMI is known to af-fect all cancers,” says Yaeger.

Potential HIV prevention drug fares well

Location of study: U.S.

Study subjects: Rhesus macaques

monkeys

Results: A new drug in development

to prevent HIV showed promising

results in a recent animal study. The

drug at the center of the research

blocks replication of the virus by

inhibiting a viral enzyme from insert-

ing DNA into chromosomes. The

animal study investigated the drug’s

protective eff ect in monkeys using

a virus resembling HIV. “We treated

the rhesus macaques with the

drug then challenged the animals

repeatedly with the virus to see if

they’d get infected,” said Dr. Martin

Markowitz, co-investigator and clini-

cal director at the Aaron Diamond

AIDS Research Center. “The treated

monkeys did not get infected, while

the untreated ones did.” In fact, all of

the drug-treated monkeys remained

virus-free.

Signifi cance: Researchers say the

data provides them with enough ra-

tionale to move forward with initial

safety testing in humans. Developed

by GlaxoSmithKline, the drug will

soon be tested in sexually active men

who are at low risk for HIV infection.

Researchers hope to test the drug

among high-risk individuals there-

after. The drug has the potential to

prevent HIV via a shot administered

every three months.

Allergies equally prevalent throughout US

Location of study: U.S.

Study subjects: Approximately

10,000 Americans from 2005-2006

Results: A comprehensive new study

has found that allergy prevalence is

relatively the same throughout dif-

ferent U.S. regions. The only excep-

tion, according to researchers from

the National Institutes of Health, is

in children 5 and younger. “People

who are prone to develop allergies

tend to become allergic to whatever

is in their environment,” said Dr. Paivi

Salo, an epidemiologist with the

National Institute of Environmental

Health Sciences. In other words, it’s

what triggers an allergic reaction

that varies throughout diff erent

regions. Outdoor allergies were

more common in the West, while

indoor allergies were more prevalent

in the South. Sensitization to food

allergies was highest in the South, as

were sensitivities to cockroaches and

dust mites.

Signifi cance: The study represents

the largest look at allergy prevalence

from childhood through old age.

Allergies are everywhere. COLOURBOX

New SAT plan adumbrates failureRe: ‘Switching up the SAT’ (Metro, March 10) Metro informs us that diffi cult words like adumbrate, legerdemain and obstreperous are being eliminated from SAT tests. One educator says that passages from The Declaration of Inde-pendence and the Federalist Papers are more suited for the test-takers. But what happens when those test-takers run into words such as usurpation,

magnanimity, consanguinity, obsequious or assiduity, all of which can be found in those documents? Will they then reach for their copies of “The Declaration of Independence for Dummies” and “The Federal-ist Papers for Dummies”? RITCHIE TIEMANN, VIA EMAIL

Pacers (46-17)Yikes. The Pacers are playing their worst basketball of the season, having lost four games in a row (three by double-digits).

No. 11

Suns(36-27)Uh oh. The Suns are slip-ping right out of the playoff picture. Memphis has just passed them.

No. 10

Grizzlies (36-26)It’s been a hard-fought battle this season for the Griz, but that’s their M.O. Now they’re a legit contender with a handful of easy games coming up.

No. 7

Blazers (42-21)Up 13 points on the Rockets with 7:31 to play, the Blazers let Houston go on a 12-1 run and lost. They’ll be kicking themselves for awhile.

No. 1

Clippers(45-20)

The Suns’ P.J. Tucker swung at Blake Griffi n Monday night and it’s symbolic of what the Clips are going to get from here on out. Teams across the league are going to go down swinging against what could now be the best team in the NBA. Having Chris Paul healthy has helped, just a tad.

No. 9

Mavericks (38-26)Perhaps we didn’t have enough faith in Dallas to hang onto a playoff spot. Wins over Portland and Indi-ana were impressive.

No. 2

Rockets (44-19)We said to not be surprised if the Rockets beat the Heat, Pacers and Blazers last week. They did. Don’t be surprised if they stay hot.

No. 4

Spurs(46-16)Year after year the Spurs laugh in the face of their doubters. As of Tuesday, they lead one of the strongest Western Confer-ences in years.

No. 6

Thunder (46-17)Gerald Green dropped 41 on the Thunder last Thursday and Jodie Meeks dropped 42 on them Sunday.

No. 12

Bulls(35-28) Joakim Noah is a beast, and no, that’s not a shot at his looks. He’s championship driven, even though a title is highly unlikely in Chicago.

No. 15

Nets (32-30)Brooklyn is 6-1 since getting its butt kicked by the Blazers. This is a team that kinda, sorta, fi nally is worth taking seriously in the East.

No. 14

Wizards (33-30)The Wizards are 8-2 over their last 10 games, which is the best record over that stretch in the East. They’re without Nene right now, too.

No. 16

Bobcats(30-34)The Nets are pulling away from the No. 7 seed and leaving the Bobcats to either play the Heat or Pacers in the fi rst round.

No. 17

T’Wolves(31-31)This off season has become far more important and interest-ing for Minnesota than this already lost regular season. The Kevin Love watch is on.

No. 8

Warriors (40-24)Stephen Curry has a strained right quad and although it won’t keep him out of games, it will limit him a bit.

No. 13

Raptors(35-27) Chicago, Washington and Brooklyn could fi nally bump the Raptors from both the No. 3 and No. 4 seeds.

No. 18

Pelicans(26-37)Three straight wins for the Pelicans. Check out Anthony Davis’ line in each win: 28 and 15, 29 and 14, 32 and 17.

NHL injury

Former Bruins center Peverley recovering

Former Bruins center and current Dallas Star Rich Peverley underwent tests at UT Southwestern St. Paul Hospital Tuesday following a frightening incident in Monday night’s Blue Jackets-Stars game in Dallas. Peverley collapsed on the Stars bench in the first period after suffering what was described as a “cardiac event.”

Stars general manager Jim Nill told ESPNDallas.com that Peverley “has been communicating with his friends and teammates and is ‘extremely grateful for all of the prayers and support.’

“The focus of all the testing and monitoring is being dedicated to finding the cause of the event and a long-term solution to rectify the problem,” Nill told ESPN.

Peverley was operated on prior to the start of the 2013-14 season to repair an irregular heartbeat.

The incident Monday night became so serious that the Blue Jackets and Stars game was post-poned.

“When he dropped it was red alert,” Stars head coach Lindy Ruff told reporters. METRO

NFL. The Patriots will now have to scratch and claw if they want to keep their leading receiver from 2013.

Edelman will test waters of free agency

The Patriots reportedly gave Julian Edelman a 4 p.m. dead-line Tuesday to re-sign, but the slot receiver didn’t wait that long to break the news that he will test the free agent waters.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter re-ported just prior to 2:30 p.m. Tuesday that Edelman and

the Patriots were unable to reach a deal. This does not mean that Edelman is official-ly done in New England. How-ever, now the Patriots have serious competition if they intend to keep their leading receiver from 2013.

NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport reported that the Patriots had offered Edelman a three-year contract Tuesday but Edelman was apparently seeking more years, more cash or both.

Edelman outperformed the Pats’ big free agent signing of last spring, Danny Amendola, by catching a career-high 105 balls for 1,056 yards last sea-son. The former quarterback out of Kent State also pro-duced 374 yards of punt re-turn yardage in 2013.

The Pats re-signed Edelman last April, after much of that year’s free agency dust had cleared, to a one-year deal.

By the numbers

374In addition to the 105 receptions and 1,056 yards of receiving Julian Edelman produced in 2013 for the Patriots, he also returned punts and racked up 374 yards in that area.
