I leaned over the railing by a stream, watch- ing the water flow beneath skirted boughs of cedar and hemlock. The drippy morning seemed perfect for shinrin-yoku or “for- est bathing,” a Japanese practice of immersing oneself in a forest environ- ment with all of one’s senses. Though it has ancient origins shinrin-yoku is a fairly new term, coined in 1982 by the Forest Agency of the Japanese Government. The idea was to encour- age people to spend time in nature, which was good for the mind and body. Today, shinrin-yoku is extreme- ly popular in Japan and is considered a mainstream practice of preventative medicine. The Japanese government has funded scientific research on the health benefits of shinrin-yoku for the past 20 years. Numerous stud- ies have confirmed that forest walks have positive physiological effects on the human body. Lower levels of stress hormone, reduced blood pres- sure, pulse rate, and an increase in immune response, including cancer- fighting cells are just a few of the benefits. Some of these benefits come from aromatic chemicals released by trees collectively called phytoncides. The positive effects of exposure to phytoncides can stay with us for days or even weeks after a forest visit. Shinrin-yoku is not just a walk in the trees. It is slow and mindful, a sort of forest meditation with full attention one’s surroundings. There are many kinds of walks: power walks, dog walks, or talk-with-a- friend walks. These types of walks all have health benefits, but they are not shinrin-yoku. As I left the creek and ambled along the trail, I soon realized that shinrin-yoku was going to be a chal- lenge. It was quiet in the woods and my first thought was “nothing is happening.” I found myself want- ing some sort of action: an owl to swoop through the trees or an animal to appear. I stopped, realizing that to continue I had to abandon my thoughts, expectations and impa- tience. The sound of the stream and the soft tap of droplets falling from the canopy helped me re-focus. I looked at the arching mounds of sword fern, the fronds crisscross- ing with stripy patterns. The straight trunks of maples stood like pillars all around me. I looked up one of the trunks until it branched into forks that streaked up to the sky. The tree looked like a giant inverted broom- stick. Beads of water hung from twiggy branches of winter-bare shrubs, each droplet its own prism. I looked through the droplet close-up, noticing that it gave me an inverted view; trees rooted in the sky and the sky becoming ground. Each droplet gave a unique view, until I bumped the branch releasing the drops like tears. Knowing Nature from page 1. It was a grey morning with a misty drizzle, but not dull. Wet coastal for-ests have a light-reflecting luster in the winter months: glossy evergreens

and wine-red leaf mulch. I leaned over the railing by a stream, watch-ing the water flow beneath skirted boughs of cedar and

hemlock. The drippy morning seemed perfect for shinrin-yoku or “for-est bathing,” a Japanese practice of immersing oneself in a forest environ-ment with all of one’s senses. Though it has ancient origins shinrin-yoku is a fairly new term, coined in 1982 by the Forest Agency of the Japanese Government. The idea was to encour-age people to spend time in nature, which was good for the mind and body. Today, shinrin-yoku is extreme-ly popular in Japan and is considered a mainstream practice of preventative medicine.

The Japanese government has funded scientific research on the health benefits of shinrin-yoku for the past 20 years. Numerous stud-ies have confirmed that forest walks have positive physiological effects on the human body. Lower levels of stress hormone, reduced blood pres-sure, pulse rate, and an increase in immune response, including cancer-fighting cells are just a few of the benefits. Some of these benefits come from aromatic chemicals released by trees collectively called phytoncides. The positive effects of exposure to

phytoncides can stay with us for days or even weeks after a forest visit.

Shinrin-yoku is not just a walk in the trees. It is slow and mindful, a sort of forest meditation with full attention one’s surroundings. There are many kinds of walks: power walks, dog walks, or talk-with-a-friend walks. These types of walks all have health benefits, but they are not shinrin-yoku.

As I left the creek and ambled along the trail, I soon realized that shinrin-yoku was going to be a chal-lenge. It was quiet in the woods and

my first thought was “nothing is happening.” I found myself want-ing some sort of action: an owl to swoop through the trees or an animal to appear. I stopped, realizing that to continue I had to abandon my thoughts, expectations and impa-tience.

Most of The Dark Mountain Manifesto is sober reading, an inner searching that feels both uncomfortably illuminating and emotionally freeing — it is our civilization on a psycho-analyst’s couch being forced beyond evasive contortions to reveal its deepest secrets. Indeed, an honest and penetrating exploration of civiliz-ation’s hidden recesses is the only place to find a cure for a behaviour that, many now believe, is becoming self-destructive.

Not everyone, of course, will acknowledge that our civilization is a problem needing a cure. Many still see it as the apex of human accomplishment, even as its supporting myth-ology continues — with barely diminished enthusiasm — to justify a wholesale assault on nature.

The resulting ecological havoc is now unequivocally evident, and is precisely the rea-son why our unquestioned trust in civilization is fraying. As “Hubris meets Nemesis” — to use Kingsnorth’s and Hine’s uncomfortable expres-sion — some thoughtful people are beginning to ask searching questions. What does progress mean? Where does it end? Will enough ever be enough? How much civilization can Earth’s ecosystems endure? If the price of civilization must be ecological disaster, what kind of think-ing would interpret this as a worthy endeavour? Is humanity to be measured by the folly of knowingly committing ecocide?

In their measure of civilization, Kingsnorth and Hine conclude, “We do not believe that everything will be fine. We are not even sure, based on current definitions of progress and improvement, that we want it to be. Of all humanity’s delusions of difference, of its separation from and superiority to the living world which surrounds it, one distinction holds up better than most: we may well be the first

species capable of effectively eliminating life on Earth. This is a hypothesis we seem intent on putting to the test. We are already responsible for denuding the world of much of its richness, magnifi-cence, beauty, colour and magic, and we show no sign of slowing down...”.

But the mythology supporting this civilization is showing cracks, and the untameable spirit of human creativity is escaping from its confinement. “The last taboo is the myth of civilization,” note Kingsnorth and Hine. “It is built upon the stories we have constructed about our genius, our indestructibil-ity, our manifest destiny as a chosen species.” Given the plethora of sad environmental news now beleaguering us, the words of this old story no longer sound so convincing.

As we approach the stark reality of ecocide, conclude Kingsnorth and Hine, the required response “is too important to be left to polit-icians, economists, conceptual thinkers, number crunchers...”. This is a time when “writers, art-ists, poets and storytellers of all kinds have a critical role to play. Creativity remains the most uncontrollable of human forces: without it, the project of civilization is inconceivable, yet no part of life remains so untamed and undomes-ticated. Words and images can change minds, hearts, even the course of history.”

So the Dark Mountain Project proposes to inspire artists of all kinds — “painters, musi-cians, sculptors, poets, designers, creators, mak-ers of things, dreamers of dreams” and especial-ly writers — to begin the process of “decoup-ling” our civilization from its destructive myth. “We believe that, in the age of ecocide, the last

taboo must be broken — and that only artists can do it.”

Charging artists with the responsibility of reshaping a civilization may be unrealistic-ally ambitious — the time has long passed when “the word of a poet was once feared by a king.” Nonetheless, Kingsnorth and Hine are proposing “uncivilized art” and, in particular, “uncivil-ized writing” — “writing which attempts to stand outside the human bubble” so we can per-

ceive ourselves with a detachment commensur-ate with a species whose future depends on its ability to evolve from being self-absorbed to being holistically conscious. This will require that we suppress the urge “to tame, to control, to subdue or to destroy — to civilize — the forests, the deserts, the wild lands and the seas...”. It will require that we transcend the numbness that allows us to feel nothing when we “exploit and destroy” our “fellow creatures.”

The Dark Mountain Project hopes to shift the emphasis from “man” to “notman”. Or, as the poet Robinson Jeffers suggested about 70 years ago, to “unhumanize our views a little, and become confident / As the rock and ocean that we were made from.” As Kingsnorth and Hine stress, “This is not a rejection of our humanity — it is an affirmation of the wonder of what it means to be truly human. It is to accept the world for what it is and to make our home here, rather than dreaming of relocating to the stars, or existing in a Man-forged bubble

and pretending to ourselves that there is noth-ing outside it to which we have any connection at all.”

Their proposal to replace the present myth ofcivilization with a viable alternative will require an audacious revolution in consciousness. This still may be possible — if we have time. An information explosion has changed circum-stances immensely since Robinson Jeffers was cast into poetic obscurity for his censure of civilization.

Innumerable writers are attacking the dark old ways and are shining new light on fresh possibilities. Naivety is becoming an untenable option. A stark awakening is forcing every-one to engagement, insisting that each of us become an artist for Earth. The early changes are already occurring, though not as soon as required nor as pervasive as necessary. But a readiness is beginning to ripen.

The Dark Mountain Manifesto: Part 3 of 3 - The Project

Knowing Nature from page 1.The slow pace made me notice things I

would normally have passed by: an anomal-ous laurel bush that must have come from someone’s yard, and a large patch of wild ginger, with heart-shaped, ground hugging leaves. The twigs of the huckleberry tipped up, with new pink buds. A hazelnut leaf was plastered to a wet log and a V-shaped winged maple seed was hooked over a branch like a miniature boomerang. I peered into the hexag-onal holes of an old wasp’s nest, and felt its damp, papery texture. I took in the piney scent of conifers and a fruity fungal odor that was not unpleasant.

After an hour of wandering I looped back to the stream, and leaned over the railing once again. The water swept under the skirted boughs of cedar and hemlock as before. Air near moving water is particularly good to breathe, with an abundance of nega-tive ions, which are charged molec-ules that we can’t see, smell or taste. Negative ions are linked to improved health and longevity, enhancing cog-nitive abilities and reducing stress, anxiety and depression. In indoor set-tings, particularly where there are a lot of electronics, negative ions become depleted. Another good reason to get outside!

I found shinrin-yoku to be a subtle yet profound experience. My moments along the trail were clear and poign-ant, and I felt refreshed and relaxed. Walking slowly in this way was like crossing into another dimension, where there was a surprising wealth of things to hear, see and feel. I’ve read that shinrin-yoku gets even better with regular practice.

Scientific research from Japan tells us that green space is important, not only for aesthetic reasons, but for our physical and mental health. I hope that we can take Japan’s lead, and plan more green space in and

around our urban areas. Our superb forests on Vancouver Island are untapped resources for human health, the significance of which we need to seriously consider, and appreciate more.

Eva Selhub and Alan Logan’s fascinating book Your Brain on Nature was used as a

reference for this article. A video introduc-tion to shinrin-yoku can be viewed at www.yourbrainonnature.com For tips on how to practice shinrin-yoku, check out www.shin-rin-yoku.org
