At Mustang Survival, we developed the MD3188 Inflatable Work vest with one goal in mind: to improve the comfort and productivity of people working on or near the water. We worked closely with the USCG to develop new standards and approve the first ever Inflatable Work vest.

Four years later, in a new series entitled “PFDs that Work”, published by the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health, commercial fishermen were asked to wear the PFDs for one month while working on deck to rate the comfort, mobility, durability and overall acceptability. We were proud to see that fishermen once again ranked the Mustang Survival MD3188 Inflatable Work vest as the #1 overall PFD.

Product development always starts with asking the right questions. When developing our new line of kids PFDs, we knew what we wanted: we wanted to introduce a contemporary product that blended comfort and safety. Figuring out what kids wanted, however, was another story.

At Mustang Survival, we work with many tough customers including international militaries, NASA, and the US Coast Guard. None are as brutally hon-est as the critics we faced on this project. Our devel-opment team cycled through hundreds of sketches and prototypes. Every concept was put to the test. We logged numerous hours at swimming pools. We held focus groups. We talked with any parent and child willing to give us an opinion.

Children, we learned, are more than happy to provide opinions:

“Too bulky!” “Too hot!” “It doesn’t look cool!” “No way! I’m not wearing that!”

We knew we were on the right track when kids started arguing over who got to wear the PFD with the head pillow. And when Sam, the 10-year-old son of our lead designer, gave the final prototype an approving nod, we rejoiced.

Design is definitely a process. Learning from our market, listening to what they want, and having the flexibility to challenge our own assumptions were key to creating a product we can be proud of.

WHAT IS ”CLO” AND WHAT DOES IT MEAN?

”Clo” is a measurement of the thermal comfort of a suit or device (CLOthing Insulation). One ”Clo” represents the thermal comfort of an average person in business clothing in a room tem-perature indoor environment. Fractions of this thermal comfort are what are perceived when worn in the water. Each of the values are below 1.0 because water transfers heat out of the body 25 times faster than air.

Our products are interlined with our exclusive AirSoft™ closed cell foam. This foam not only pro-vides maximum insulation against the cold, it also keeps you afloat to protect you from drowning.

Wearing a Mustang Survival suit will increase cold water survival time exponentially.
