This time of year, we meet one of two different types of football coaches: those who have rosters chock full of veterans and those who don’t.

But no matter their situation, each coach we encounter is extremely excited about the upcoming season, because they truly believe the system they have in place will lead to great things.

We have the same belief here at the Reagor Dykes Auto Group (RDAG). Sure, things have changed in the 10-plus years we’ve been in business, and more exciting changes are on the horizon. But through it all, the foundation on which the company was founded has stayed the same and will never change: We will always strive to be your friend in the car business and the community.

Along with our business partners we hope this publication is another sign of our consistency and commitment to the customers we serve. The foun-dation was laid three years ago when we wanted to create a product in which to highlight the coaches and kids who play such big roles in our communities. The response has been incredible.

The magazine contains season previews of area colleges and high schools teams, as well as stunning photos of the players and coaches who will proudly represent our region on the football field.

Football has played a big role in the lives of RDAG owners Bart Reagor and Rick Dykes. Reagor played defensive back at Texas Tech in the mid 1980s and Dykes served as an assistant for several colleges including Texas Tech where he coached running backs and later became the offensive coordinator under coach Spike Dykes.

They continuously support area high school athletics because of the role it plays in shaping our younger generation.

So, we hope you enjoy this publication. We also hope you’re proud of it and proud of the players and coaches who help make our one-of-a-kind West Texas football season exciting.

Good luck to all the teams in their march through the season.

That was quite a ride those Red Raiders gave their fans last year. Fast start with seven consecutive wins and a ranking in the top 10. Not so fast finish with five straight agonizing Big 12 losses. Still, Tech wrapped up the year in an excellent manner with the school’s fourth consecutive bowl victory.

All of this drama came on the heels of the compelling hiring of head coach Kliff Kings-bury, who was named to lead the Red Raider program following the abrupt departure of Tommy Tuberville.

Kingsbury, arriving in Lubbock on the heels of helping tutor Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel to the

Heisman Trophy, brought a much-needed sense

of healing to a fractured fan base.

A Tech alum and for-

mer standout quarterback himself, Kingsbury (and his staff) want to be in Lubbock and appear to be all-in when it comes to moving Red Raider football to the often-sought, often-talked-about, rarely seen next level.

“I would categorize last season as a learn-ing experience for the entire program,” said Kingsbury. “We started fast and did some good things early. Then when we played some better teams, we didn’t handle adversity well, and you can’t win games against good teams like that.”

Despite the final regular-season losses or maybe because of them, Kingsbury saw his team learning and growing.

“The way we rebounded in the bowl game speaks

volumes about where we’re

headed,” he said. “It was a huge step for the program.”

Tech, which finished 8-5 (4-5 Big 12), was selected to face Arizona State from the Pac-12 in the Holiday Bowl. The game ended well after midnight local time, but the Raiders gave their fans plenty of reason to celebrate by mak-ing a statement in a not-so-close 37-23 victory against the Sun Devils.

“It was huge,” Kingsbury said. “I think we’ll see the results from it in this coming season. I’ve never seen a program start two freshmen quarterback and go 8-5 and win the Holiday Bowl. We beat the team that hosted the Pac-12 championship in their stadium. It’s a huge accomplishment, and it sets us up for success in

year two.”Well, the quarterback deal certainly took care of itself. The Raiders start-

ed last year with one semi-proven commodity, Michael Brewer, who was expected to start but who got hurt. That opened the door for Baker Mayfield and Davis Webb, the aforementioned freshmen, to

step in and step up.Mayfield and Webb battled back and forth during the season. Webb

ultimately played 10 games and got the starting nod in the Holi-

day Bowl, where he threw for 403 yards and four touch-

downs. During the ensuing weeks, Mayfield and Brewer each transferred,

leaving Webb so in control of the job that he’s the only

QB listed on the team’s post-spring two-deep chart.

“It’s year two in our offense, and I expect to see us take our biggest steps

yet,” Kingsbury said. “From what I’ve seen so far, we’re headed in that direction.

We have a lot more speed at wide receiver than we had last year, and our guys are big-ger and stronger than they were a year ago. We have guys who can run by people and take off and a quarterback who can

Continued from page 7 throw it down the field. We expect to do more of that this year.”

It will all start with Webb, who completed 226 of 361 passes for 2,718 yards last year with 20 touchdowns and nine interceptions. The Holiday Bowl may have been his coming-out party in terms of what the future holds for the Tech offense.

“It’s night and day from our first spring,” Kingsbury said. “Our quarterback’s confidence from being named MVP of the Holiday Bowl has carried over, and that’s huge. He had a fantastic spring, and he’s got a great group of receivers and running backs coming back.”

In all, the Raiders return eight starters on offense, although they will have to fig-

ure out how to replace receiver Jace Amaro, who led the team with 106

catches for 1,352 yards before declaring for the NFL draft and being taken by the New York Jets in the second round.

“In our offense, the quar-terback is what makes it go,” Kingsbury said of Webb. “He continued to grow during the course of last year. He was not happy when he wasn’t the starter in the first game, but

he continued to work, and by the end of the year he had developed himself

into a bona fide top guy in the country. He has continued to work hard and done everything we’ve asked. I’m looking forward to seeing him play this year.”

In the Raiders’ spread offense, Webb will have

plenty of options in the receiving

corps. Returning starters Bradly Marquez

and Jakeem Grant combined for

Bradley Marquez is one of Tech’s most consistent offensive

threats heading into the 2014 season. The All-Big 12 honor-able mention receiver caught

49 passes for 633 yards and six touchdowns last season.

114 receptions, 1,429 yards and 13 TDs a year ago. Sophomores Reginald Davis and D.J. Po-lite-Bray were atop the depth chart as the other two starting receivers.

Junior running back D’Andre Washington (485 yards, 4 TDs) should start after seeing plenty of playing time a year ago. He also caught 34 passes for another 269 yards. Tech, though, will boast plenty of offensive threats. Others in the receiving mix include Devin Lauderdale, Brent Mitcham, Jordan Davis (28 catches in 2013) and Derreck Edwards. Quinton White, a sophomore, will look to spell Washing-ton in the backfield.

“Just the nature of our personnel should let people see our big-play potential is greater this year,” Kingsbury said. “The wideouts we have, the quarterback is more comfortable, the offen-sive line is stronger, guys who can run outside, running backs who can make plays. You should see a lot more big plays out of our offense.”

Still, the Raiders will need to make sure they have depth at quarterback. Of course, the situation is not unlike a year ago, when a couple of unknown commodities emerged to lead the team.

“We take a lot of pride in that aspect of our program,” Kingsbury said in reference to grooming and developing quarterbacks. “We had two true freshmen last year. This year, we’ll have a true freshman backup, and he will be groomed and ready to go.”

As for the transfers of Mayfield and Brewer, Kingsbury said that’s the nature of college football today, adding few players want to “wait their turn” behind someone else for several years.

“That’s the nature of the game now,” he said. “Kids transfer if they don’t play early. That’s just where we are. They want to play, and if they don’t, they leave. If it happens, you deal with it.”

The offensive line returns three starters in left tackle Le’Raven Clark, center Jared Kaster and right tackle Reshod Forten-berry. Joining them up most likely will be left guard Alfredo Morales and right guard Trey Keenan.

Defensively, Tech returns five starters, and there is a little more work to do, but the silver lining on that side of the ball is the coaching continuity. “We lost some guys, but we have some JC guys coming in who look really solid,” Kingsbury said. “The defense had a good spring, too. They

stayed healthy and built off the bowl victory.”For the first time in five seasons, the Raiders

will have the same defensive coordinator and defensive staff, which,

Kingsbury said, is

instrumental in terms of continuity and stability.“We have some JC guys along the defensive

line who will give us instant size,” he said. “I’m excited to see how that develops as guys become more comfortable. We expect them to be much improved as well.”

Up front, Branden Jackson, a 6-4, 240-pound junior, returns at defensive end while Pete

Robertson, a 6-3, 225-pound junior, is back at the bandit position.

Sam Eguavoen (70 tackles last season) returns at linebacker

while Justis Nelson and J.J. Gaines are returnees in

the secondary. The fast start and big bowl

victory in-creased the

expecta-tions

for

2014 at Tech, but Kingsbury said his approach is not so black and white.

“I never set a win-loss expectation,” he said. “My idea is to get better every day. I’m going to make mistakes every day, but learning from them is the important thing. That’s the standard I hold myself to. The big goals, I believe those things will handle themselves if every day you outwork the next guy and continue to get better.”

To get there the Raiders will need to improve dramatically in two areas: turnover margin and penalties. Turnovers at key times and penalties at inopportune moments conspired against Tech during that not-so-memorable five-game skid.

“We harped on this as a staff last year,” he said. “We as a coaching staff have to do a better job on penalties and turnover margin. We were in the bottom five in the country in turnover margin last year. To be an elite team and win championships, you have to at least be in the middle of the pack. This year, with a quarter-back who has more experience, we shouldn’t turn it over as much. On defense, we should get

more takeaways and we should have fewer penalties on both sides of the ball.”

And if those things happen?“This year ought to

be fun,” he said. “I’m looking

forward to it.”

New head coach Seth Parr inherits a Coronado Mustangs team that has won just five total games in the past three seasons. But if you think for a second Parr is intimi-dated by his new challenge, think again.

His first head-coaching job was at Cap-rock in 2007, where he took over a program that was 5-55 in its previous six seasons. Over the next seven years, he proceeded to lead the Longhorns to two playoff berths, the first of which snapped a 35-year playoff drought.

“I’m not afraid of failure,” Parr said.

“When I got to Caprock, they were one of the worst teams in the state, and we were able to turn things around. I’m confident that we can do the same thing here at Coronado.”

Parr replaces Kent Jackson, who re-signed in the spring to become head coach of his hometown Seminole. The move to Coronado also is somewhat of a homecom-

ing for Parr, who grew up on the South Plains while his father Steve had head-coaching stints at Slaton and Plainview.

Parr graduated

from Plainview in 1997 and from McMurry University in 2001. Thereafter, he served as offensive coordinator for his father at Palo Duro for five years before taking over at Caprock.

“I’ve always had an interest in coming back to this area, especially Coronado,” Parr said. “It’s always been a great place and a great program. If I was ever going to leave Caprock and the comfortable situ-ation I was in, it was going

to be for a program like Coronado.”One thing’s for sure, Mustangs fans bet-

ter be ready for some offensive fireworks. Parr is bringing his version of the Hal

Mumme Air Raid offense, made popular in these parts by Mike Leach and Texas Tech.

Parr’s Caprock squads rou-tinely set records during his ten-ure, and one of his past quar-terbacks, Michael Guerrero, is the all-time leading passer in

the Panhandle area with more than 7,000 yards passing and 89

touchdowns in his career. CONTINUED

“We don’t try to hide the fact that we don’t have too many running plays,” Parr said. “We’re going to throw the football around and just try to switch it around to different positions on the field. We’re going to have an exciting offense and we’re going to score a lot of points.”

And like the predecessors who ran this high-octane offense before him, Parr doesn’t use a playbook nor does he need the best athletes around to score a bunch of points.

“We didn’t have a roster full of great athletes at Caprock, but we were able to develop them to fit the system,” Parr said. “Having great athletes certainly helps, and I’ve been impressed with our athleticism here at Coronado.”

While Parr wasn’t ready to name any starters before two-a-day workouts, he is in-heriting a pretty experienced squad. Overall, the Mustangs return 16 lettermen and four starters on offensive and five on defense.

Quarterback Christian Hayes returns after throwing for 1,252 yards and 11 touchdowns and rushing for 564 yards and eight scores in only five games. His top target, All-district

receiver Brandon Sherlin, also is back after amassing 45 receptions for 1,011 yards and eight touchdowns.

Defensively, Parr will run a 4-2-5 scheme, and the unit should benefit from the return of linebacker Colman Hendershot and lineman Keandre Hall.

“I’ve had quite a few players catch my eye with their athletic ability, but I know they can give me more,” Parr said. “They’ve done a great job with summer conditioning and seven-on-seven, but we’ll find out a lot more about them during two-a-days.”

The top priority for Parr right now is to try and change the mind-set of his squad. The Mustangs haven’t had a winning season since 2007, which is also the last time they qualified for the playoffs.

“I’m not a joking, kidding type of guy, and I’m not here to make friends,” he said. “I’m here to win football games. We’re here to win. The parents want us to win, and so does the community. So, we’re going to do everything we can do to the best of our abil-ities to win on the field and in the classroom. If there are some players who are not on board with that, then they can cheer for us from the stands.”

New Coronado head coach Seth Parr will be looking to Brandon Sherlin, (1), center, who caught passes last season for 1011 yards from his receiver position. J.T. Morris (13), left and Christian Hayes, (2) will battle for the QB duties in 2014.

Wayne Hutchinson is one of two new coaches on the LISD block, but he’s hardly a stranger when it comes to building a win-

ning program. At his last job in Stamford, Hutchinson

inherited a program that had been 2-28 in the three seasons before his arrival. He installed

his program, changed the culture during his eight-year tenure, and next thing you know, Stamford was winning back-to-back state

championships. But those were 1A state titles, you say?

What about making the jump to a much larger classification? Well, seems Hutchinson has been asked that question a time or two (or more)

since he was tabbed Plainsmen head coach last February.

“That’s probably the No. 1 question I’ve been asked,” he said. “You know, it is a big jump, but kids are kids. It doesn’t matter what classifica-tion they’re playing in. And football is football. X’s and O’s are X’s and O’s. The big difference is the bigger the program, the more you have to manage in terms of teams and paperwork.

“But when it gets down to the nuts and bolts of it, kids are kids, coaching is coaching and football is football.”

Lately, Plainsmen football has been playoff football. Under former coach Todd Pearson, Monterey made four consecutive trips to the postseason. Last year’s inexperienced Plains-men team finished 3-8 overall (3-2 in district) and absorbed a 55-27 beating from Amarillo in the bi-district round. Pearson submitted his resignation a few weeks later, opening the door for Hutchinson.

“The very first thing I noticed in the spring as we installed the offense, the thing that stood out, is how well they responded even though it was change,” he said. “They worked hard, and I was very impressed. I am excited about this. They have a great attitude and a great work ethic. Those things really stood out for me.”

The Plainsmen will operate out of a spread offense, which spreads the defense out and spreads the ball around, keeping the opposing

team off balance.“I feel like we have some talent,” he said. “The main thing is being able to

identify that talent and put the kids in the right positions to be successful this fall.”

Monterey returns a solid quarter-

back in Hunter Spaeth and a talented receiver in Vincent Johnson.

“We have a good running back, a good nu-cleus of our offen-sive line returning, and we’re banking on that to be a strength,” he said. “I’m excited about Hunter at quarter-back, and I thought our receivers really devel-oped during the spring. You put all of those things together, I think we have a chance to be a good offense.”

Hutchinson de-scribes the offense as an “air-raid type,” although he adds that it is not as air raid as what some people might think. “We’re going to try and be balanced running and passing the ball, but sometimes we may have to be more heavy pass than run, and other times we may run more than we pass.”

Coach Wayne Hutchinson will introduce a spread offense to Plainsmen in 2014, something not seen there in decades

Andrew Anderson, a tackle, is one of the returning starters on offence. He’s joined up front at center by Josh Allen, a junior. “We’re expect-ing big things out of him,” Hutchinson said.

Top receivers following the spring include Landon Perry, Jared Frankhouser, Wes Hutchin-son and Koby Hamel. “I feel like we have some good receivers,” he said. “Vincent Johnson at running back has shown really good vision and that ability to get to the second level. The other important thing is he can catch the ball out of the backfield.”

On defense, Justin Hubbard has moved from tight end to defensive tackle and enjoyed a tremendous spring for the Plainsmen. Another standout up front is Sam Bartholemae.

“Obviously, winning is a big key,” he said. “We want to get off on the right foot. Winning gives you confidence and takes you a long way early as you get ready for district.

“My main concern right now is to identify our

kids, those players who will help us be successful on Friday night, put them in the right position to allow us to be successful. Can my quarterback learn this offense well enough to execute? Can we line up against bigger opponents and stop their run, and can we avoid the injury bug? Our depth is lacking in some areas, but if we can come out those pre-district games with an under-standing of what we’re trying to do offensively and defensively, have our quarterback at the right pace and not have injuries, then we’ll have a chance to surprise some people in district.”

While he’s only been on the job a short while, Hutchinson said he is excited about the direction and vision of MHS athletics overall.

“I really like our administration and the vision they have,” he said. “Monterey, not just ath-letically, but academically, has a lot to offer in terms of preparing kids for college. We’ve had our baseball team, soccer team and basketball teams go into the playoffs. A lot of good things are happening on our campus, and success breeds success.”

Jordan High (10), will be counted on to use his size and breakaway speed to stretch out defenses and help open

up areas for Westerner receivers to work.

BY DOUG HENSLEY Photography by CODY HUTCHISON

There they were, poised for the next step in a recent resurgence, but a funny thing happened on the way. Lubbock High encountered an old and familiar commodity – adversity – and try as they might a year ago, the Westerners were unable to rebound.

“We were coming off a year where we had made the playoffs,” said head coach Jason Strunk, entering his fourth year at the Westerner

helm. “We had a lot of momen-tum and felt really

good about where we were, and things, for whatever reason, just didn’t go our way on the field or

off.” The main reason for what turned out to be a 2-8 (1-4 in district) season

was injuries. The Westerners suf-fered more injuries than Strunk

could ever remember. “We incurred the most injuries in one year of any team I’ve ever been a part of,” he

said. “We lost 13 starters during the course of the season. It’s like we were snake-bitten.”

This year, the Westerners will try to bite back. Strunk and his staff have stayed the

course as far as their vision for the program, and participation levels continue to increase. Where Lubbock High once had no depth, the Western-ers now have more depth than they’ve had at any time in recent memory.

“We wanted to get back to the playoffs last year,” Strunk said. “That was our goal. Not getting back, that bothers us. We’re driven this year.”

Leading the drive this season will be returning quarterback James Garcia, a 6-1, 185-pounder who displayed steady brilliance last year before, you guessed it, suffering an injury. “He led us to 75 points in a game and a half before he got hurt,” Strunk said.

Garcia demonstrated great arm strength and lots of savvy for running the Westerners’ fast-paced spread attack. “He has a cannon for an arm,” Strunk said. “You never know what he’ll do when he drops back. He may take two steps and take off. We have confidence in his abilities under center.”

The Westerner quarterback will have the lux-ury of throwing to what Strunk calls one of the finest wide receiver corps in West Texas. Lub-bock High boasts size, strength and speed in its receivers. Devonte Greathouse, Jordan High and Jacob Bayouth, each of whom is at least 6-foot-1, will provide talented targets for Garcia.

Alex Loredo, a second-team all-district choice last year, leads the way at inside receiver while Austin Flores and Devin Trevino should be in the mix as well.

Depth will be a key component to the Westerners success as they prepare to make a return trip to playoffs in 2014

“We return some pretty key pieces skill-wise,” Strunk said.

Daniel McCutcheon, Alijah Garcia and Keyshawn Collins will battle for playing time at running back, and Strunk said he’s excited to see what his runners will do behind, “one of Lubbock High’s biggest offensive lines com-pared to years past.”

The Westerners have two returning starters up front: Jessie Andor and Josh Hovey, who should be joined by Felipe DeLeon and Nick Hoeve. “I’m excited about our guys up front,” Strunk said. “One thing we’ve said all along is we have to get tougher and stronger in the trenches.”

Lubbock High has attacked that need with an emphasized nutrition, strength and conditioning program. Also in its fourth year, the program is seeing benefits. “Virtually every player is stronger today than when they came in a year ago,” he said. “It’s incredible to see how far some of these guys have come from when they first came into the program. I would put our nutrition, strength and conditioning program up against anyone in the state as far as how it maximizes player’s potential.”

The Westerners will need all the strength they can muster on defense, where they strug-gled last year and surrendered too many points for the offense to overcome.

“I was disappointed in how we played defense at times,” Strunk said. “We had a lot of issues like injuries and guys missing. Our

defensive line had a hard time matching up in games. We showed flashes, but then we also showed not- so-great flashes.”

Lubbock High will play a 3-4 and count heavily on returning starting linebacker Steven Duke. Joining him will be inside linebacker Aaron Lopez. D’aedrion Morgan and Travon Norris will compete for playing time as well.

Kristian Johnson is a returning starter in the secondary and Bay-outh is expected to battle at safety as well as Tristan Warren while Josh Hernandez is being looked at as a cornerback.

Up front, Tommy Najera is a returning starter who had a solid year a year ago. Tony Garcia, a 325-pound-er, will plug in at noseguard, and Isaac Perales will be counted on up front. “I’m really interested in seeing Isaac compete,” Strunk said. “He needs to have a good year up front. If he does, we’ll have a better chance of being successful.”

Strunk said the Westerners are heavily armed in the kicking game with Ryan Huber handling extra points and field goals and A.J. Garza handling kickoff and punt-ing duties.

Frenship has built a reputation as one of the toughest teams to beat in West Texas at the class 4A level.

When the University Inter-scholastic League announced the 2014-2015 reclassifica-tion and realignment results, the Tigers found themselves settled at the top in District 2-6A (formerly 5A).

“It means we will get to com-pete at the highest level of athletics in Texas,” Frenship head coach Brad Davis

said. “We have been preparing ourselves for this jump the past few seasons by playing some tough 5A competition during our non-district schedule.”

Last season alone, the Tigers faced four teams at the 5A level in non-district play.

“We have been able to establish a great program in football,” Davis said. “We have a great chance to compete at the top of the dis-trict now. We will approach things the same and play our game. Our kids are excited and they want to compete at the top level.”

The Tigers depth should ease the transition to class 6A.

Frenship returns two leading running backs from

last season’s 12-1 team. The combination of senior running back Grant Sandercox and junior Ronald Awatt account-

ed for 29 touch-downs and

2,775 yards on the ground. “We set up our offense with the run,”

Davis said. “Our running game opens things up for us.”

Junior Scott McIntire and senior Chandler Casey return at fullback.

“We have always involved our fullback position into our gameplan,” Davis said. “We have several plays designed for them during games. Our fullbacks have to do three things. They need to block, catch and run. I think we have two guys who can handle all three of those things pretty good.”

The Tigers’ wide receiver position is five deep on the depth chart.

Jared Mannon and Clay Davis at wide receiver will lead the wideouts with Broder-ick Harrell, Todd Lloyd, Jordan Mannon and Chris Carter in the mix.

returning from a shoulder injury last season. Bingham was second on the depth chart

last season behind Trevor Eulenbach. He lined up mostly in the jumbo set, utilizing his legs to create touchdowns close to the goal line. Bingham had a pair of touchdowns be-fore he was sidelined with the shoulder injury for the rest of the season.

“He is back at 100 percent,” Davis said about Bingham. “He throws the ball very accurately with touch, but he can also be considered a runner.”

Frenship’s running game will be dictated by an offensive line returning two starters in Grant Caravelli and Devin Jordan.

The Tigers will stay consistently tough on defense with the Zach Finley and Hayden Harrison at linebacker.

Also in the mix will be Coleman Dennis and Kyle Barthold at defensive end and Cole Fontenot at nose guard.

Jared and Jordan Mannon will be at cornerback with help from Chris Carter.

Peyton Elliot who has started 27 games for the Tigers in his career will anchor the defense from

his safety position.“I think defensively you have to watch

for our front seven,” Davis said. “We have filled in holes from last year and will have six returners on defense.”

Davis said team chemistry would be just as important as experience and depth this season.

“I think the seniors stand out,” Davis said. “We have had some good groups come through in the past and this year’s seniors remind me of some of our better groups. They all get along and work hard. That chemistry will have a big impact on how far we can go this season.”

Max Kattwinkel couldn’t have asked for better results in his head-coaching debut last season with the Cooper Pirates.

Despite inheriting a young team and chang-ing the offense and defense, the longtime assis-tant guided Cooper to the fourth round of the playoffs for the first time in school history.

Now there’s a new challenge for Kattwinkel and the Pirates: maintaining that momentum.

“We were excited about what happened last season, and it was important for our kids to see

all their hard work pay off,” Kattwinkel said. “I think it definitely raises expectations, and one thing we’ve addressed to the kids this spring and summer is that we don’t want to be one-hit wonders. We want what happened last year to be a stepping stone for our program.”

The Pirates finished 11-3 last season, with their final loss coming to Stephenville, 42-28, in the quarterfinals. This year looks even more promising as Cooper returns 27 lettermen, including seven starters on offense and five on defense.

“We had a great senior class last season, but they were a fairly small group, so we had to play a bunch of sophomore and juniors,”

Kattwinkel said. “Those younger guys really stepped up and we’re expecting them to contin-ue to play big roles this season. They’ve worked really hard in the offseason and are ready to go.”

Offensively, the Pirates will be young on the front line, but if they mature quickly, there are enough returning skill-position players to make the unit explosive.

Kolton Ehlers, who lined up at quarterback, slot receiver and running back last season for the Pirates, will take over the full time sig-nal-caller duties this year. Last season, he threw for 360 yards and five touchdowns and rushed

for another 275 yards and six scores. “Kolton is one of our most athletic

players, and we think he’ll do a great job for us at quarterback,” Kattwinkel said. “We lost a good one in Stanton Keane, but we have a lot of confidence in Kolton. I think he’s going surprise a lot of people.”

Ehlers will have plenty of weap-ons at his disposal in receiv-

ers Jordan Salas and Evan McHugh, and

running backs Alek Cruz and Dakota Gruben.

Defensively, the Pirates are led by outside lineback-er Ricky Mendez, who was named the district’s preseason

defensive MVP by Dave

Campbell’s Texas Football.

Mendez posted 113 tackles, three sacks,

three interceptions and three fumble recov-eries last season en route to being named to the All-City team by the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal. Defensive end Kirby Vinson and safeties Tycer Farmer and

Garett Neudorf should also pace the unit.

The biggest change the Pirates face this season is moving up two classifications to play in District 4-5A. In the past, they were one of the

biggest schools in Class 3A, but now they’ll be playing the likes of Abilene Cooper, San Angelo Lake View, Lubbock High and Plainview.

“We look at it as the same situation we were in last year,” Kattwinkel said. “We were kind of the unknown last season because we didn’t have a lot coming back from the previous year and we had a fairly new coaching staff. But we viewed that as a challenge to make a name for ourselves.

“This season we’re the little guys moving up and we view that as a challenge. We’re ready to make a name for ourselves again.”

Last year, in Ryan Rhoades’ first year at the helm of the Plainview Bulldogs football team, the squad played hard and was competitive in most of its games. This year, as Rhoades enters his second year as head coach, he wants to see the hard work translate into victories.

Plainview finished with a 3-7 record last year and was knocked out of the District 4-4A playoff race on the final night of the regular season. They are looking to qualify for the postseason for the

first time since 2006.“Obviously, our expecta-

tions are going to be raised,” Rhoades said. “We had a good offseason, a good spring

our expectation is to win a lot of games.”Rhoades said he has no doubt that his team

will battle for 48 minutes every game.“We’re going to play hard,” the coach said.

“We know we’re going to play hard for four quarters. But we’re going to finish the deal this year and our expectation is to win quite a bit. And I think it needs to be. But that’s the second expectation. Our first expectation is to play as hard as we can for as long as there’s time on the clock. And if we keep doing that first one, the second one will come.”

With a few breaks last year, the Dogs might have reversed their record and finished 7-3.

The offense averaged 180 yards rushing and 112 yards passing last season. Rhoades said the ground attack will continue to be a key for his team.

“Last year we were about a 60-40 (percent) run-pass team,” Rhoades said. “I expect us to continue to do that. I think it helps control the ballgame. And I also think it helps our defense be a better defensive unit, too. I don’t know if we’ll be that much dissimilar from the year before except we’ll be a lot more productive.”

The key offensive returnee is senior quar-terback Paxstyn Oldfield. With a year under his belt, Oldfield could improve on last year’s numbers when he threw for 1,119 yards and 16

touchdowns. Half of those touchdowns went to receiver Keevon Crump, who had 13 catches for a team-high 328 yards on the season. Quen-ion Hines also proved to be a deep threat for the Bulldogs and will return this year.

During spring football, both Hines and Crump played in the defensive secondary, which was hit hard by losses to graduation. Jonathan White and Braxton Riddley also are expected to contribute at the receiver positions, as is Jayton Ellis.

Once again, the Dogs will employ a running back by committee approach. The top returning back is Domingo Saucedo. Speed burner Warren Flye was the top junior varsity back last year. Sophomore Trendan Jackson also is expected to contribute in the backfield as is var-sity holdover Mikey Ditmore while Khalid Riggins will step in at tight end.

The offensive line includes returnees Austin DeBerry and Erik Mendez.

The Bulldogs have a number of returnees on defense, including linebacker Trenton Jones, their leading tackler last season. Junior defen-sive end Marc Wallace led the team in sacks last year and junior Dontae Session returns to man the other defensive end spot. Junior Roy Abo-nanu and senior Moises Garcia are returning at the tackle spots. Linebacker Brian Switzenberg also returns.

Plainview will enter a new district this season in Class 5A which will include Lubbock

High and San Angelo Lake View from last year’s district with newcomers Abilene Cooper and Lubbock Cooper. Both Coop-er schools advanced to the postseason last year, Abilene in Class 5A and Lubbock in

Class 3A.“I think our

district will be really competi-tive,” Rhoades said. “We’re really looking forward

to it.”

After three years of work, the makeover of Lowrey Field is complete, and Lubbock Independ-ent School District officials are happy to report the operation was successful.“It’s pretty amazing to think about what it looked like just five years ago compared to today,” said LISD executive director of athletics Mark Ball. “It is a source of pride for the community and for the school district.”

Lowrey Field has served as home to LISD football programs since 1961. The facility was in desperate need of an upgrade not just to modernize existing amenities but also to help the LISD keep pace in the athletic arms race that equates on-field success with state-of-the-art facilities.

A $200 million LISD bond proposal approved

by voters several years ago included $18 million in upgrades for Lowrey. The 8,000-seat stadium has a new pressbox, fieldhouse, concession and restroom buildings. It also features a community room which can host events.

Additionally, the facility gained a corporate sponsor when the entire area was renamed Plains Capital Park. Other corporate partners have also come aboard.

“We have a lot of great products we can be proud of at Plains Capital Park,” Ball said. “The playing surface, the track, the scoreboard, the press-box and the fieldhouse. All of those are very good.”

The fieldhouse, which is located at the north end of the field, was completely rebuilt and is now closer to field level, saving game participants an uphill walk at the end of a game. It features four new locker-rooms. The facility is jointly

shared by LISD programs Coronado, Estacado, Lubbock High and Monterey.

Besides local programs having an improved facility, one of the other advantages is Lowrey would host postseason playoff games, providing teams with a nice place to play and giving the local economy a boost.

Ball said Lowrey hosted nine such games last year. “We’d like to host more,” he said. “But in a playoff situation, coaches have to agree where they’re going to play, and there can be a lot of fac-tors involved in whether your facility gets to host a game or not. I know Coach (assistant athletic director Mike) Meeks tries to do everything he can to bring playoff games here because we know that helps our economy. Fans who come here to watch a game buy meals and gas and may shop

and may stay overnight in a hotel.”Another athletic upgrade that is ex-

pected to be online by the start of the new school year in August is new tracks at all middle schools. The tracks, which are expected to be open to the public, should be a boost for all sports programs.

“It’s not just the track programs that will benefit,” Ball said. “Very few sports don’t involve movement and speed. The tracks will give every program more of an opportunity. It will definitely help the track programs, but it should impact all programs. For example, if the basketball coach wants to take athletes out and have them run 400 meters for time or conditioning, they’re able to do that now.”

The tracks, which are in different stages of completion at middle schools around the city (as of late July), are expected to be open to the public for specific uses.

“We’d like to open all of them to the public for walking, jogging and running,” Ball said, “but

not for bikes and motor scooters. We’ll have nine new middle school tracks open for jogging and walking. It’s nice for the community to have that, and it’s a good way for us to share our facilities with the community.”

The Lowrey Field project and middle school tracks are two large projects among a handful that have been completed as a result of the bond passage. There are a few minor projects still to be completed, and of course, there are other projects yet to be taken on.

Ball said he would like to see two other major initiatives take place in the coming years: upgrade the district’s weightrooms and provide indoor build-ings for practice in case of inclement weather.

“You go other places, and they have indoor workout facilities,” he said. “What that means is those programs don’t miss a day for anything.”

The indoor facilities, called all-purpose rooms

(APRs), would help keep LISD programs on competitive footing.

“I’d like to see us get our weightrooms upgrad-ed,” he said. “I would like to see us do something with our APRs. Ours are small and not really conducive.”

Overall, though, LISD football programs con-tinue to make progress on all fronts.

“I thought Coronado made a big jump last year even though it didn’t show up in their overall record,” Ball said. “They lost six games where they had the lead in the fourth quarter. Monte-rey, I think, will bounce back from last year. I’m looking forward to Lubbock High with coach Strunk’s fourth year and the way he and his staff have increased participation, and Estacado has been steady. They had a tough run at one time last year, but they came back and played well in the playoffs.”

The Estacado Matadors got hot at just the right time last year, playoff time, and head coach Danny Servance hopes that late success carries over into this new season.

“We made great strides throughout last season,” he said. “But then as the season went on, we had some things not go as we expected them to go. That does something to a team, and the team can choose to go one way or the other.”

The Matadors refused to go the other way. Instead, they went straight ahead, eventually going three rounds deep in the playoffs before losing to Graham.

“Our kids rallied and fought,” Servance said. “Something just clicked and we started running on all cylinders. It was nice to see all of that effort and intensity come to fruition.”

While reaching the Region 1-3A semifinals was rewarding,

Servance knows achieving similar success won’t come without similar effort and intensity this year. He said the Matadors had a great offseason and a great summer and are eager to get back to the business of maintaining a tradition of excellence at Estacado.

The Mats (6-7 overall, 2-3 in district) will com-pete in District 2-3A following the UIL’s biennial realignment. The league includes Andrews, Level-land, Lubbock-Cooper, Seminole and Shallowater. Needless to say, challenges abound.

The most glaring vacancy will be in the back-field, where Estacado will need to replace Robert Johnson, who gave the offense a quick-strike threat. But the Mats know nothing happens with-out a solid offensive front, and the team returns four of five starters (and four of six returnees overall) up front.

“They’ve done a great job for the past couple of years,” Servance said. “This is the third year they’ve been together, and we expect them to be the strength of this offense.”

Jalen McQueen, Kendrick Quigley, James Christophe and Hollis Ready will do much of the heavy lifting up front, opening running lanes and protecting quarterback Jalen Tennison.

“Our quarterback is returning,” Servance said. “That’s always good to have your leader back on offense. We’re confident in his abilities to manage the game and put us in a position to win. He’s a

great threat. He can run or throw, and he’s done everything we’ve asked him to do. He has come into his own and really matured in the position for us. He makes great decisions and other guys look up to him to lead this team.”

And while all of that is positive, it still leaves the question of finding a replacement for Robert Johnson unanswered.

“We have two or three guys to choose from,” Servance said. Craig Busby, a 6-2 senior, David Smith, a 5-8 junior, and Tyrese Nathan, a 5-7 sophomore, are among the main contenders for the tailback job. “Craig plays hard and is a different type runner than Robert was. David made a key play for us in our playoff win against Perryton, and Tyrese is a smaller kid, but he’s tenacious, hard-nosed and gets downhill.”

Servance is more certain about his receiving corps, the members of which are tall, talented and proven commodities. Kenaris Jackson is a returning starter who had more than 500 yards last year. Dorean Deary and D’Ante Thomas both had good seasons last year. Roc Sanders and Keshondric Hastings will provide additional talent for what shapes up as a remarkably deep group of receivers.

“We have some big receivers, and their size makes a difference because even when it looks like they’re covered, they’re not covered,” Servance said. “The size

difference plays into it, and all of these guys know how to go get the ball. We expect them to do a good job for us.”

Defensively, the Matadors have other questions to answer. “We have some holes to fill,” Servance said, “but we feel like we’ll be able to do it.”

Rakeem Hatchet returns at noseguard, pro-viding experience and stability up front. “He’s a great noseguard,” Servance said. “He’s the type to demand a double-team which is what you have to have to be successful.”

Overall, Estacado returns five starters on defense, including Manuel Ruvalcaba, the team’s middle linebacker. “It’s good to have him back on defense,” Servance said. “He had a little injury on the first play of seven-on-seven this summer, but we think he will be back to 100 percent and ready for August.”

Hastings returns at outside linebacker and Carl Willard is back at safety. “He’s a tremendous play-er and a leader for us in the secondary,” Servance said. Meanwhile, Javon Bascus also returns and will man one corner.

“We feel like we have some kids who will do a great job,” Servance said.

The Shallowater Mustangs return just one starter this season and face the arduous task of replacing one of the best running backs in school history.

So how does head coach Kyle Maxfield feel about the challenge ahead?

“To tell you the truth, I’m really excited,” said Maxfield, who is entering his sixth season with the Mustangs. “We’re going to have to reload at pretty much every position, but we have a lot of guys who are ready to step up and fill some big shoes. It really is exciting to see how our players are going to respond.”

The bar certainly has been set the past two seasons, when the Mustangs compiled a 24-2 record. Two years ago they started 11-0 before losing 21-7 to Monahans in the area round of the playoffs. Last season, they won a school-re-cord 13 games with their only loss coming to

Graham, 45-14, in the quarterfinals.A big reason behind Shallowater’s recent

success was running back Jarek Black, who finished his career with 7,078 rushing yards. Maxfield said he’ll have a couple options when it comes to replacing Black this season. One of those is Cooper Ogle, who had a solid sopho-more campaign and also shined as a speedster and pole vaulter during the track and field season.

“Overall, I think we’re going to be quicker on both sides of the ball than we have been in the past,” Maxfield said. “We’ll see what kind of dimension that adds to our team.”

Chris Contreras and Westin Elliot might share the quarterback duties, as both players possess different strengths. The Mustangs also expect big things on offense from tight end Preston Scaff.

Shallowater returns its lone starter on defense in cornerback Bryan Hall, who was named the district’s preseason defensive MVP by Dave Campbell’s Texas Football. He had 26 tackles,

three interceptions and three fumble recoveries a year ago.

Cornerback Jake McMillan, defensive end Bobby Escareno, defensive tackle Andres

Castillo and linebacker Kol-ton Rexrode also should bolster the defense.

“We might not have a lot of starters returning, but we have a lot of players who

gained valuable experience last season,” Maxfield said. “Our junior varsity team had a great season too, but we’ll just have to wait

and see how they respond. There’s a differ-ence between playing on Thursday and Friday nights.”

While the Mustangs have a lot of holes to fill this season, they were picked to win District 1-3A, Division I, by Dave Campbell’s Texas Football.

“I don’t think our players feel pressure to keep our success going; I think they look forward to it,” Maxfield said. “They’ve worked their tails off to get this opportunity.”

Jared Sanderson just finished his second sea-son as the Levelland head coach, which translates to a greater comfort and a deeper understanding of the system among players.

“The transition two years ago was smooth just because players were familiar with me,” said Sanderson, who was elevated to the head coach-ing job following the 2011 season. “Anytime you have experience with something, you get better at it.”

“Our football savvy is a lot better this year,” Sanderson said. “We have some experienced kids up front offensively and defensively. We have some kids who are really good and some that are young who we’re counting on at skill positions, but overall, we should be better because of our familiarity in the program.”

Levelland (5-5, 1-4) will expect a consistently excellent performance from an offensive line led by Chris Simmons. He is a three-year starter who played guard a year ago but will move to center. “We think that will really benefit us,” Sanderson said. “He’s smart and an aggressive player who will do a good job for us.”

starter up front and will handle one of the guard slots. Arturo Blanco is a 6-2, 250-pound two-year starter who will patrol the other guard slot.

“The other two positions are up for grabs, and we have a couple of kids who will compete for those spots,” said Sanderson, who was an assis-tant for three years prior to being promoted.

Brandon Royce and Tomas Vidales are the top two candidates to plug into the vacancies up front.

Nick Gerbert is a sophomore who is expected to start at quarterback. “He’s a dual-threat kid,” Sanderson said. “He can really run and he throws the ball extremely well. He is the type of player who, the way he plays, makes everyone around him better.”

Another sophomore, Daniel Hearne, is pro-jected to start at tailback. Sanderson said Hearne has great balance and is difficult to bring down.

Trenton Jones, a three-year starter, heads the cast of wideouts. Sanderson calls him, “the most dynamic player I’ve ever coached. He can do incredible things. He does a good job finding gaps and getting open.” Jones provides another dimension as well. He will occasionally move to quarterback and operate from the so-called “wildcat” formation.

Michael Lopez

will be counted on as another playmaking receiver while Jeffrey Elliott and Daniel Jones each have great work ethics and are expected to impact the passing game.

Defensively, the Lobos will count on a mix of returnees and new faces to make things happen in their high-pressure attack. Blake Price, a 6-5 sophomore, is being looked at to play defensive end. “He is a big kid with a big motor.” said Sanderson.

Alex King is a three-year starter at defensive tackle who brings stability and strength to the front line. “We pressure people on defense,” Sanderson said. “We go get people, and Alex does a good job of moving and making plays.”

Paul Ochoa is back at defensive tackle, and A.B. Ramirez is expected to round out the defen-sive front. “He is really quick for his size, good off the edge, and we’re looking for big things from him,” Sanderson said.

Levelland is not as set in its linebacking corps. Isiah Cortez is a returning starter with big-play capability. Cody Duncan, meanwhile, missed last season following shoulder surgery, and Sanderson is looking forward to hav-ing him back in the lineup.

“He was a good football player as a sophomore,” he said. “I know he’s

ready to get back in there and play.”Sophomore Brian Martin is another possi-

bility at linebacker because of his range and quickness.

Trenton Jones is a shutdown corner on one side of the field. Sanderson said teams threw his way 25 times a year ago with five completions. “He loves to play up tight on people,” Sanderson said. “He loves the challenge. He would rather press than play off.”

Lopez is expected to handle the other corner. Tandon Jones is projected at safety with Adrian Rodriguez expected to get the nod at the other safety after a strong summer and seven-on-seven campaign in which he had more interceptions than any other Levelland defender.

“We had our best offseason since I’ve been here,” Sanderson said. “The summer has been good. We’ve had lots of participation, and everyone is buying into what we’re trying to do

here. Overall execution of the offense is going to be

a key for us. If we can come out, score some points, move the chains and hang onto the ball, we’re going to

be OK.”

Lamesa has made a lot of strides in the past two years under head coach David Ritchey.

The one milestone they have not been able to achieve is a having their name in the win column on Friday night.

Entering his third year as head coach, Ritchey feels this is the year the Golden Tornadoes get their first win under his tenure.

“We’ve turned a lot of corners as a team” Ritchey said. “Our

enrollment and number of players coming

out has improved and guys are excit-ed about football. We just need to get that first win. I think once we get that first win, everything else will fall into place.”

Twist of Fate

productive, Ritchey had to make tough decisions when making his previous varsity and junior varsity rosters.

“We haven’t gotten a lot of wins on Friday, but the wins were there on Thursday night,” Ritchey said. “Our junior varsity team has experienced win-ning on Thursday nights. A lot of the players on the JV team could have played at the varsity level, but I made the decision to keep them with their class so they could excel and experience winning.”

Lamesa is now faced with a unique situation. The players with the most winning experience will be newcomers to the varsity.

“A lot of times coaches lean on the seniors to share the varsity experience with the younger guys,” Ritchey said. “We look for that same thing, but we also want the younger guys to show the older guys what it is like to win. I think the mix-ture of both can help us.”

The Tornadoes will return three players to the offense.

Among the offensive returners is senior lineman Zack Vera. Vera is the only returner to the offensive line. He started every game last season as a junior.

“It is a scary thing for us having only one returning lineman,” Ritchey said. “Zack

will be looked at as the leader. The remaining five to seven guys that we will rotate in at the line will all be new. As a unit, I am excited for our offensive line, and that is an unusual thing to say when they are basically all new. These guys are decent size and won’t outmuscle anyone, but they can run. They can run really well and that is going to play well for our scheme and getting out on the corners.”

The spread offensive that Lamesa runs will be operated by a quarterback-by-committee approach.

Roger Martin will start at quarterback and wide receiver. Martin took over the quarterback position towards the end of last season.

“Roger is just a great athlete,” Ritchey said. “He won’t be coming off the field too often. When he isn’t playing quarterback, we will move him out to the receiver position.”

Heath Derington will share snaps at the quar-terback position. Derington is a newcomer from the Lamesa junior varsity team.

“The main thing with Heath is his intelligence,” Ritchey said. “He is extremely intelligent and has an accurate arm. For our system, he does a lot of things we are looking for to run our offense.”

Daruis Jackson could also be in the mix for snaps as quarterback. Jackson’s main role on the offense will be as a

wide receiver. “He is one of those kids we brought up to the

varsity last season because we had no other choice with injuries,” Ritchey said. “As much as I wanted to keep him with his class, it just wasn’t possible. The kid has guts. He is a leader and a half and the type of player you want to go to war with.”

Lamesa’s offensive lost two running backs to graduations, but Caleb Slider and K.J. Hunter look to fill the void.

The Tornadoes bring back four returners to the defense.

Joseph Olvera and Alex Ayala will anchor the defense at the linebacker position.

“Both these guys have really been the base of our defense since last year,” Ritchey said. “Olvera has taken his share of beatings on the field, but has grown as a player and a leader. It is a lot like having a coach on the field when he is out there because he knows everything that is going on.”

Also returning on defense is Gilbert Valdez and Jackson who will play in the

secondary. “I tell our guys all the time that we just need to

get o ur first win,” Ritchey said. “We have the talent and work ethic to be a pretty

good club. We just need to experience a win and go

from there.”

Although the Idalou Wildcats lost in the sec-ond round of the playoffs, they could’ve taken solace in the fact that the team that beat them finished as the state runner-up.

Then again, this is Idalou, a football program with higher expectations than most. And that’s exactly the way second-year coach Jeff Lofton wants it.

The Wildcats have not only made 14 straight playoff appearances, but they’re only four years removed from their only state championship.

“It’s never a good ending for us unless we win them all,” Lofton said. “I expect us to win the state championship every year and that’s also what these kids expect.”

In his first year on the job, Lofton guided the Wildcats to an 8-4 record, including a 20-0 vic-tory over Childress in bi-district and a 35-14 loss to Wall in the second round. Wall eventually fell to Cameron Yoe 35-14 in the Class 2A, Division

I state championship game. This year’s Wildcats will try to make up for

the loss of 19 seniors, including several at the skill positions. But while they might be young, they won’t be inexperienced.

“It’s going to be tough to fill those holes, but we got a lot of guys who got a taste of varsity action last season,” said Lofton, who played at Idalou and served as an assistant for four years before taking over as head coach.

Chandler Craig anchors the offensive and defensive lines, while receiver and defensive back Zach Perry and running back and defen-sive back Brandt Schilling also return to provide

veteran leadership. The Wildcats also

expect solid play from tight end and defen-sive end Zach Garcia.

Zack Kirk-patrick, who

as a sophomore last season started at defensive end, takes over quarterback duties, and fellow junior Ty Nichols, who started at middle line-backer last year, also returns.

“Although we had a big senior class, we played a lot of juniors and sophomores, so we’re expecting big things from them,” Lofton

said. “You always question throwing these young guys in the mix, because they’re talented enough. You just don’t want to overload them. But they all responded well, and now they’re battle-tested.”

Kirkpatrick played tight end for the Wildcats last season, but has been a quarterback for most his career.

“He one of our most athletic players and really gives us versatility back there,” Lofton said. “We don’t think he’ll have a problem making the transition.”

Idalou is predicted to win District 1-3A, Division II, a new league that brings unfamiliar foes, including Spearman, Tulia, Highland Park and Sanford-Fritch.

Whoever the opponent, the Wildcats are looking to end their two-year streak of losing in the second round of the playoffs.

“It was hard to take, especially in my first year,” Lofton said. “But we’re never satisfied until win it all. That’s when we’ll be satisfied.”

Back in 1997, when the New Deal Lions were in the middle of a 10-year playoff drought, they hired alumnus Ron Mayo to right the ship.

Mayo retired last season after a successful 17-year run and, once again, New Deal has turned to a former Lion to save the day. This time, it’s Matt Hill, who has served as an assis-tant since Mayo’s first day on the job.

“The apple doesn’t fall too far from the tree out here,” Hill said. “Coach Mayo really set the bar high, and if I can fill half of his shoes, I’ll be doing all right. There’s no other place I’d rather be working. This is my dream job.”

Mayo amassed a 153-44 record during his time with the Lions, including 14 playoff ap-pearances. Last season, they finished 12-2 and lost to eventual Class 1A Division I state cham-pion Stamford, 29-25, in the quarterfinals. It was the farthest a Mayo-coached team had advanced but not the farthest playoff run in school history. That came in 1987, when the Lions, with Hill on the roster, advanced to the semifinals

Hill said he’ll add a few wrinkles of his own to the program, but overall, he isn’t trying to fix something that isn’t broken.

“Coach Mayo did a great job during his time here and was great to the kids,” Hill said. “Over the past few years we had split some of the administrative duties, so he’s been grooming me for this job. I’m so grateful for that and I’m trying my hardest to keep this program going strong.”

Hill should also be grateful to Mayo for leav-ing the cupboard pretty full. New Deal returns 17 lettermen, including six starters on offense and eight starters on defense.

Offensively, the first order of business for the Lions is replacing their front line, as all five of their offensive linemen were seniors a year

ago. After that, New Deal has plenty of weapons

returning, including running back Demetrius Jackson, who rushed for more than 1,000 yards last season and also earned three medals at the state track and field meet.

Quarterback Baylor Bean also is back after amassing more than 600 total yards. Tight end

Michael Looney and wide receiver Blake Meil also should boost the offense.

“The offensive line is our big-gest question mark, but

we have some kids who really stepped up this spring,” Hill said. “We also have a lot of kids who got some crucial experience last year. Once we get confidence up front, I think we’re going to be OK.”

Defensively, the Lions will be anchored by returning nose guard Kris Vasquez, who was named the district’s preseason defensive MVP by Dave Campbell’s Texas Football. Vasquez finished with 130 tackles last season.

Fellow lineman Darius Jackson and safety Sebastian Hartless also should pace the defense.

“Kris is a talented young man who just un-derstands the game and gets after it,” Hill said. “He attracts a lot of double teams, so we’re go-ing to have to get creative this year with where

we play him. Overall, our defense should be strong.”

Abernathy is coming off three consecutive seasons in which they have won 10 or more games.

That is why head coach Darrel Daily feels that moving to a district with tougher com-petition could be a smooth transition for the Antelopes.

Abernathy moved down to class 2A (formerly known as 1A) after the University Interscho-lastic League reclassification and realignment session this year.

“I think this is a rare case in which moving down a classification might actually have us fac-ing tougher competition,” Daily said. “Floydada moved down with us and New Deal has had a great program for a while now.”

Although they find themselves pitted in one of the tougher 2A districts, Daily welcomes the new classifications

“There is sometimes a negative stigma within the community when a team drops down in a classification,” Daily said. “This will absolutely be an advantage for us though. We were doing

well in a higher class, but we were always a smaller

school. I think it will benefit us to play

closer to the amount of students that we have.”As newcomers to the classification, the Ante-

lopes look to continue their winning tradition.“All these kids know is how to win, and I

think that’s a good thing because they don’t want to be the group that doesn’t uphold the tra-dition,” Daily said. “The seniors this year have had a 10-2, 10-3 and 11-2 record. All they’ve ever done is win.”

Winning might come natural for the Ante-lopes, but it helps to have the core of offensive

skill positions

returning.Quarterback and three-year starter Garrett

Royal will return under center. He is coming off a season in which he was named the district offensive MVP.

“He has been great for us,” Daily said. “He throws the ball well, but he is really dangerous when teams flush him out of the pocket and he is able to use his legs.”

Returning at running back is Nick Clarkson who rushed for over 1,000 yards last season.

The Antelopes’ other running back Sawyer Knight will miss the season with a knee injury.

“It hurts us in depth at the position,” Daily said. “Nick (Clarkson) and Garrett (Royal) will

need to pick up the slack.”

Cassaus Cunningham looks to lead the Ante-lopes at wide receiver after taking off his junior season for personal reasons.

“Cassaus played for us his sophomore season and showed real signs of talent,” Daily said. “He is a gifted athlete that will help us on both sides of the ball.”

Alongside Cunningham will be Carter Turn-er, Trey Bender and Oscar Zepata..

First team all-district offensive lineman Ryan Soliz returns at left tackle along with Ryan Lacey. The rest of the line is up for grabs at this point.

“We have a few guys that can fill in the holes,” Daily said. “We lost one of our best of-fensive lineman in Dru Lust when he graduated in the spring. If our offensive line can come together, matched with all our returning skill position players, we have a shot to be a pretty tough team to beat.”

Defensively the Antelopes’ secondary will be anchored by Cunningham at safety with Clark-son, Zepata and Bender at defensive back.

“Our defense gave up nine points a game last year and right at 100 yards per game,” Daily said. “We have less experience on this year’s defense and that lack of experience might hurt us. But if we can play together early on, we should be able to overcome (the lack of experience).”

Sterling Kitchens will play at linebacker with Soliz returning to defensive end.

Last season, the Slaton Tigers qualified for the playoffs for the first time since 2006. Now, with that milestone in their rear-view mirror, head coach Chad Terry and crew are looking to take the next step.

“That was a big building block, not only for our football program but for the entire athletics department,” said Terry, who begins his third year with the Tigers. “Every boys and girls team qualified for the playoffs last year, and then we had a relay team qualify for the state track meet. We’re on quite a roll right now, and we just want to keep it going.”

It might be easier said than done for the Tigers, who return a fairly young team this season. Only nine of last season’s 25 lettermen return from a team that finished 5-6 and lost to Bushland 49-22 in the first round of the playoffs.

“We’re going to be really young, but those younger guys are ready to keep

the success going,” Terry said. “It’s one of those situations that if we can have a good season, the next couple of years are really going to be fun. We have a nice foundation set; we just have to maintain this momentum.”

Overall, the Tigers return just three starters on both offense and defense, but they’ll be strongest in the trenches. Linemen Adrian Moreno, Kade Kitten and Mike Williams all return, as does linebacker Jacob Terry, who was a second-team all-district selection as a sophomore.

Slaton must replace all-district quarterback Bryce Whaley and several other skill-position players, but Terry expects key contributions from fullback Braxton Creagor and tight end/defensive end Jameson Jackson.

Other top prospects include: lineman Jacob Maule, receivers Dez Williams, Sergio Uvalle and Ryan Escobar, running back Ave’on Williams and defensive back Josh Salazar.

“We played nine underclassmen in the playoff game because of injuries, so we have plenty of

players who got a taste of varsity football,”

Terry said. “They’ve worked really hard in the offseason to get better, and we’re excited to get back on the field.”

The Tigers moved into District 2-3A, Division I, where returning to

the playoffs will

definitely be a chore. Not only does the league include familiar district foe Denver City, which went 11-1 last season, but Shallowater, which went 13-1 a year ago, is now in the mix. Brown-field, Kermit and Tornillo round out the district field.

“Adding Shallowater certainly makes it tougher, but we already know that we have to be ready every Friday night,” Terry said. “We’re in a district that if you make the playoffs, you’ve certainly earned it.”

And being able to compete with traditional powerhouse programs like Shallowater, Idalou and Denver City is all part of Terry’s master plan. He said his biggest goal when he came to Slaton was to bring back the culture of winning that had been missing.

“I can honestly say that we’re getting there,” he said. “Our kids, in all sports, are starting to see that we can compete with some of the best programs around. Our confidence is gaining, and we really feel like we’re headed in the right direction.”

Roosevelt looks to build its new program under the direction of first-year head coach John Contrucci.

When searching for head coaching location, he knew he wanted to come to West Texas.

Contrucci grew up in Temple, Texas before moving to Abilene to play football at Hardin-Simmons.

“When I was at Hardin-Simmons I fell in love with West Texas,” Contrucci said. “West Texas football is more than football. There is nothing like it. Football in West Texas feels more like a community. “

Contrucci brings a high-intensity personality to his coaching style.

“I think the previous coaches did a good job, but all great things will happen when you add enthusiasm,” Contrucci said. “I am full of energy. I am enthusiastic. I think we have an opportunity to build a great program and it is going to take enthusiasm from everyone.”

Contrucci knows how to build a successful program. He was most recently the assistant head coach of Leander High School and before that he helped rebuild a successful program at Granbury High School.

“We have had success at other places that I have been,” Contrucci said. “I believe in three things: academics, discipline and attendance. If we can focus on those three things, we will have everything covered.”

Contrucci began at Roosevelt n the spring and was able to see small glimpses of his returning talent. While the Roosevelt 7-on-7 team is fresh off qualifying for state, Contrucci is more excited about his offensive line and its accomplishments.

The offensive line placed sixth at a state lineman challenge earlier this summer.

“I feel so fortunate that our offensive line is looking so good right now,” Contrucci said. “Those are the guys that often get overshad-owed, but they are the ones who make the team go. They set the intensity at practice and dictate how games will go.”

Tray Bass looks to lead at wide receiver with Randy Welch and Zach Bullock in the mix.

The quarterback position is still up for grabs at this point, but Contrucci said he looks forward to seeing the competition for the starting spot.

“We don’t have that number one guy yet (at quarterback),” Contrucci said. “We will know once we get into two-a-days where we stand at the quarterback position.”

Senior Ian Wilkes will anchor the defense at cornerback with Jacob Garcia at safety.

“Defensively, we will keep things the same,” Contrucci said. We are looking for boys who are not afraid to run to the ball and make a play.”

Gomez will play both sides of the ball on the line and J.D. Rojas and Teagan Cooksey will start at line-backer.

“Team unity is the secret to all successful teams,” Contrucci said. “(Unity) is going to be key if we are going to succeed this season. From what I’ve seen, the guys love each other. They enjoy playing football and getting better. I know it’s tough for them because eight of 10 coaches are new, but the seniors believe in each other and we believe in them.”

Head coach Pete Stone has his first year as the Lubbock Christian High School head coach in the books.

After a 3-7 record, Stone is confident his team will rebound this season.

One of his bigger tasks in the offseason has been convincing his players to leave the weight room and go home after hours.

“We have kids who want to work,” Stone said. “They want to work and they want to play football. There is a bunch of guys who come workout over the summer and it gets to the point that we have to run them out of the facilities. They are a group of friends who can’t wait to play.”

It’s the hard work he has seen over the spring and summer that has Stone confident heading into the upcoming season.

The Eagles will also be returning all-district quarterback Brooks Pitaniello.

“Experience is a good thing,” Stone said. “We installed a new offense last year and had to work through the year with learning that. We have a year of learning the offense behind us and our guys feel more comfortable.”

Pitaniello rushed for more than 800 yards last season under the new offensive scheme.

“It was something new and took us a little while to get comfortable,” Stone said. “Towards

the end of last season we were rushing for 350 yards a week. We look forward to building off that at the start of this season and having a strong running game.”

Parker Pierce will be in the mix at running back and Caleb Gilster will be at full back.

Stone said Pierce brings speed to the Eagle rushing game.

Justin Lack and Tyler Fant will contribute at wide receiver.

Andy Forsythe, Bryan Watts, Kadison Rogers, and Caleb Scarborough make up the offensive line.

“We are expecting big things from those guys,” Stone said. “We don’t have the biggest guys, but they are getting better each day and we expect a lot from them.

Graduating nine players and bringing in 20 new players will have the most impact on a de-fense that graduated leading tackler Zach Stone.

“It will be hard to fill the spot of someone who had 167 tackles on the season,” Stone said. “Positions are not set on defense yet, but we have a few guys who can help.”

To transition new players to the varsity level, Stone is continuing a small group program he installed last year.

The program breaks the team into several small groups that run through practices together.

“We started doing the small groups last year and it was really effective,” Stone said. “Seniors are paired with underclassmen by positions. The groups get really close and compete amongst each other and it makes everyone better.

Brannson Moore is one of those guys that can help fill the gaps in defense at the line backer position.

“We like the work him and our defense has been putting in during the summer,” Stone said. “This senior class is some-thing special. We challenged the sen-ior class at the beginning of the year to be leaders and set an example, and they have looked great.”

With defensive positions still being competed for, Stone has faith in the defensive scheme.

“Our defensive coordinator Leric Eaton is sticking around and that is a huge thing for us,” Stone said. “He brings an energy and experience that makes the kids better.”

Leric is a former Texas Tech University linebacker

The Eagles have the pieces to get back to a winning record. Until then, Stone will continue to convince his players that it is OK to leave the weight room.

WAYLAND BAPTIST ATHLETICS

Wayland Baptist University football coach Butch Henderson believes his team can win a Central States Football League championship this season. The key, he said, will be for the Pioneers to get off to a strong start after they finished winless in 10 games last year.

“The expectation is that we can win a conference championship,” Henderson said. “That is really built on the idea that we get that success early. I think we’ve got to win early. We played everybody strong last year. But we did not win. And that’s the thing we’ve got to find. You start winning and it carries itself. You need that success. We need to get that momentum rolling before we get into confer-ence play.”

Henderson is optimistic for a number of reasons as the Pioneers’ football program enters its fourth season in existence and its third playing competitively. Wayland has nine starters returning on offense and 10 starters back on defense.

“Not many people are going to come in and tell you we’ve got nine starters returning on one side of the ball and 10 on the other side,” Henderson said.

Heading the returnees on offense are five experienced linemen, led by all-conference center Chandler Layer and all-conference guard Kevin Hobbs. The others include tackles Cody Dykstra and Jacob King and guard Bran-

don Grant.Skill players returning include quarterback

Anthony Campuzano, who was the starter two years ago. Last year he was among four quar-terbacks who played for the Pioneers. He will be a key in Wayland’s offense, which Henderson describes as “a form of the spread.”

“We use a tight end a bunch in it,” Hender-son said. “But you’re always going to have three wide receivers, a tight end, a running back and a quarterback. We’re going to take the ball in a shotgun every time. What we’re going to do is really try to throw the football.

We use a controlled, short passing game. If people move out of the box, then we run the football.”

Wayland’s top returning receivers are juniors Chris Acosta and Josh Bailey, who both have been with the program since its in-ception. Acosta led the team with 36 receptions for 478 yards last season. Bailey, the slot receiver, caught 15 passes for 130 yards and just missed earning Academic All-America honors.

The running back will be transfer Evan Hearn, a former Plainview High School stand-out with one year of college eligibility left.

Defensively, Wayland runs a 4-3 defense, with four down linemen and three

linebackers.“We’re a base 4-3 defense,” Henderson

said. “There are so many things you’ve got to face today. You slide that front and

Continued form page 91 make it look different every time, but 4-3 is our base. Our base all comes from that idea of having that middle linebacker and funneling everything to that middle linebacker and four in the secondary in support behind that.”

The Pioneers’ middle linebacker is a goo-done. Junior Jon-Lucas Poe was an all- conference selection who led the team with 114 tackles, which included 10½ tackles for loss and two sacks. Outside linebackers are Alden Mann on one side and Blair Magee on the other side. Quinton Shafer also sees playing time at outside linebacker.

The defensive line features returnees Holt Henderson at end and Nate Askins at tackle. Henderson led the team with 4½ sacks and had 10 tackles for loss.

The safeties are Travis White, who led the team with three interceptions last year, and David Hockenberry, who had two interceptions and was third on the team with 74 tackles. The cornerbacks are Josh Paul, who intercepted two passes last season, and Brandon Shepherd.

The Pioneers also have an all-conference punter returning in Josh Houghtaling, who averaged 47.8 yards on 24 punts.

Butch Henderson said the offseason pro-gram has gone well for the Pioneers.

“The physical part of the offseason, we really made great strides in increasing our strength and being able to increase our speed and our movement,” Henderson said. “Having kids who have been in the program four years and have been here and done this now for four years helped us make a jump fast.”

Henderson increased the amount of contact and live game situational work during the spring season. That was designed to help his team learn to finish games, which they had trouble with last year.

“We had more contact and more live than

we have gone in the past simply because we felt like we played everybody close last fall, but we’ve got to find a way to come out and win and be able to make those things happen,” Henderson said. “And we felt like we were going to have to do it in a live situation.”

Henderson put the Pioneers in game situa-tions during the spring.

“When you’ve got the conference champion and you’re down by four late in the fourth quar-ter and have the football and all you’ve got to do is score and you’ll win, we’ve got to be able to come through and do that,” Henderson said.

Henderson said the strength of his team is the experience and maturity throughout the roster. The players have been through a baptism by fire in which they had to play right away in their college careers. But that fire has melded them into a strong unit, Henderson said.

“I think the strength is that you’ve got a group of young men that have been here to-gether,” the coach said. “These guys have matured faster than others because they’ve had to. Usu-ally, you kind of watch your freshmen and

sophomore years and start playing some as a junior and senior. These guys have had to learn through that freshmen and sophomore year playing against people. I think that part of the experience is really going to pay dividends.”

Henderson said the teams to beat in the CSFL this season are probably Langston University and Southwest Assemblies of God University, which tied for the title last year. He added that Bacone University, which finished right behind the top two schools, also should be in the mix. The coach also expects tussles from Oklahoma Baptist University and Texas College.

But don’t count out Wayland Baptist, Henderson said.

“We think we’re going to win it,” he said. “We have expectations we can do it. We feel like we’re there with all those people. We’re

nip and tuck with them. We’ve just got to find a way to win.”

All-Conference guard Kevin Hobbs will

again anchor an offensive line that

should be much improved in 2014.
