A network thatmakes the dif ference.

When you try something new, you want to get expert advice from people you trust and who have the knowledge you need. As new varieties oer shorter growing seasons, regions across thePrairies now have the opportunity to put soybeans in their crop rotation. At Richardson Pioneer, we’re here to help. Our network of agronomists and Certied Crop Advisors are spread across Western Canada, and oerinformation and research to ensure that our customers have the best advice when they need it the most. “Our customers want to know what’s going to work in their region,” says Terry Moyer, Regional Sales Agronomist for Richardson Pioneer. “They are looking to know which variety to grow, what eld to select, how to plant. Inthe Red River Valley, we’ve been growing beans for almost two decades and now we can share that experience with the rest of Western Canada.” We’ve also been investing in research and development at Kelburn Farm, Richardson’s 500-acre research and development farm. Soybeans have been grown at Kelburn since 1998, and the data gathered oers insight intovariety dierences, crop protection products, agronomic practices and yieldpotential. It also allows for us to continue being an objective third-party while comparing varieties side by side. When considering soybeans, talk to your local Richardson Pioneer representative. Gain insight and knowledge from a network you can trust.

Tips to help guide you through the soybean growing season.

Crop Rotation Soybeans are susceptible to diseases that also aectcanola, sunowers and edible beans, and the best wayto break the disease cycle (mainly sclerotinia) is to follow a cereal crop. Residue management of the cereal crop becomes the main concern for the following soybean crop. Heavy trash can slow soil from warming up in the spring to a desired 10 degrees Celsius for optimum planting. Herbicide residue should be taken into consideration from previous years, including any post-harvest application. Pre-seed herbicide needs to be a non-residual product.

Plant Population and Row Spacing Planting 200,000 seeds per acre may result in a nalplant population of 180,000 plants per acre after factoring in germination and mortality. Early-maturing varieties have responded to higher seeding rates of approximately 200,000 plants per acre, while later-maturing, branchy varieties respond better to 180,000 plants per acre. Wider rows of 20” spacing and higher respond greater to environmental conditions; branchy varieties should be chosen in these wide-row situations to take advantage of the extra space. Planting populations can be targeted at 170,000 to 180,000 plants per acre. *These numbers based on solid-seeded, 10” spacings at Kelburn Farm from 2010-2012.

Starter Fertilizer Soybeans are very sensitive to seed-placed fertilizer. As a legume crop, soybeans provide their own nitrogen through nodulation. Proper inoculation is critical for a successful soybean crop.

Soil testing to know your nutrient levels is very important. Studies have shown that soybeans will respond to added Phosphorus (P) when soil tests are below 10 ppm P205. How that P is applied is most critical. Solid seed can safely add 50 pounds of MicroEssentials® Sz, providing 20 lbs of P205. If soils are at the very low range (ve ppm, forexample), then a soil P building program must be implemented on preceding crops, fall banded or side banded at time of seeding.

Harvest Time and Grain Marketing Soybeans reach maturity when 90 per cent of the pods are brown. They can also change very quickly with hot temperatures and can go from a relatively green looking crop, to full leaf drop and harvest in a very short period of time. Weeds at harvest are seldom an issue, but if green weeds are present, a desiccation may be required to dry down any green material. Richardson Pioneer oers exible pricing and deliveryoptions at our Ag Business Centres throughout the soybean growing regions. Richardson International’s marketing team in Eastern Canada has been merchandising soybeans for a long time, and we have drawn upon that experience to become a leader in soybean merchandising in Western Canada now too. Our extensive network of elevators in Western Canada, together with our export facilities on Canada’s east and west coasts, allow us to connect Prairie soybean growers with consumers throughout the world. By working with your Richardson Pioneer representative, you can build a plan from planting to grain delivery that is suited for your farm.
