Annual Report

2014

50 years! In 2015, UW-Marinette celebrates a half-century of providing high quality edu-

cational programming and public outreach at our beautiful, wooded, bayside campus. Many thanks to the entire community for your ongoing support! As we reflect upon our mission these past five decades and renew our commitment to the future, it is my pleasure to share with you highlights of the past year.

Perhaps the timing has never been better to underscore the quality of instruction at our campus. In 2014, two of our university teachers received top statewide honors for their innova-tive instruction and commitment to students. You will read on page 3 about UW-Marinette sweep-ing the UW Colleges’ Chancellor’s Teaching Excellence Awards this past year, a tribute not only to those two awardees but to the caliber of all of our faculty and instructional academic staff at the Marinette campus. Furthermore, our origi-nal campus architect, John Seaborg, was honored for 50 years of dedication to UW-Marinette by receiving the UW Colleges and UW-Extension Chancellor’s Friend & Advocate Award. Truly, we are exceptionally enriched by a cast of top notch professionals dedicated to university edu-cation in this community!

This spring marked the passing of one such iconic contributor, Theatre on the Bay Founding Artistic Director, Herb Williams, who was hon-ored in a tribute celebration of his life and artistic talent in July. We are so proud of Herb’s legacy in the theatre named for him (see page 4). His contributions were celebrated in the summer staging of his favorite musical, Cabaret, directed by John Thornberry. Productions rounding out the 2014 calendar year included Crimes of the Heart and An Inspector Calls, directed by Artistic Director Rebecca Stone Thornberry and Charlotte’s Web and Doctor Dolittle, Jr. in the Children’s Theatre, directed by Jamie Schwaba. Friends may continue to honor Herb’s memory and ensure a future of enhanced theatrical pro-gramming through gifts to a memorial fund that will be used to renovate the Herbert L. Williams Theatre.

This year also brought new outreach program-ming in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields, as the campus, in partnership with Lockheed Martin, launched the STEM Outreach Days program at three area middle schools. On page 5, you will read about this tremendous new program—which will continue into 2015—that immersed 700 area 7th and 8th grade students in hands-on

educational experiences and demonstrations to spark their interest in and pursuit of STEM-related careers.

On campus, enrollment has remained strong, and this year we filled our student apartment housing to capacity. Our international program has also continued to grow, now supporting 51 international students, which accounts for over 10% of our total student population. We are grateful for the continued support of our host- and friendship-families who welcome and help our international students to transi-tion to life in the U.S. and Marinette County. Your generous spirit enhances the campus and community experience for all.

As we look back on the past 50 years (pages 6-7) and ahead to the future, we are plan-ning all kinds of anniversary celebrations in 2015 to observe this milestone year in UW-Marinette’s outreach to the community. Watch the campus website and plan to join us for a quarterly speaker series, a gallery event showcasing memorabilia from the past 50 years, a special Fall Convocation celebration, a Chamber of Commerce Business-After-Hours, and much more!

As always, we are grateful for your support. Without you, UW-Marinette would not be able to offer a world-class university educa-tion with countless opportunities for life-time learning, here on the shores of Lake Michigan. With you, we celebrate transforma-tional programs, dedicated faculty and staff, and an ongoing commitment to enhancing professional and personal lives!

Sincerely,

Paula T. LangteauCampus Executive Officer and Dean

The UW-Marinette Foundation is pleased to partner with the cam-pus on this annual report. The Foundation is a separate entity from

the University, but we are proud of our collaborative relationship in support of students, faculty, facilities and programming.

In May, the alumni association welcomed 90 graduates as campus friend Judge James Morrison gave the commencement address.

Together with the Stephenson National Bank & Trust, the UW-Marinette Foundation also helped sponsor the annual Convocation on September 23 that featured a variety of speakers from various decades who came together to celebrate 50 Years of UW-Marinette.

Dr. Amy Reddinger, Associate Professor of English and Women’s Studies, Tonya Meisner, Mathematics Lecturer, and John Seaborg, most recent Past-

President of the UW-Marinette Foundation were recipients of the UW Colleges statewide 2014 Chancellor’s Awards.

Reddinger is the recipient of the 2014 Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching for Faculty. She was recognized for her work with students in the area of metacognition, weaving self-assessment and reflection activities focused on thinking about the learning process into all of her courses. Dr. Reddinger joined the UW-Marinette faculty in the fall of 2007. Previously, she directed a writ-ing program and taught as a graduate assistant in the English Department at the University of Washington in Seattle. She has recently published several articles about a range of topics including teaching women’s studies, James Baldwin’s novel Another Country, and cookbooks from the 1950s and 60s.

Reddinger received the Professor of the Year award for 2008-09. In June of 2013, she received promotion to Associate Professor and tenure in the UW Colleges.

Meisner was the recipient of the 2014 Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching for Instructional Academic Staff. She was recognized for her work with the Hawkes program for modularized, master-based teaching of developmental mathematics. Meisner joined the mathematics faculty in the fall of 2011. She is a UW-Marinette alumni who grew up in the area. Her teaching experience includes eleven years of teaching math in public schools and teaching online courses. Working with math students of all ages has given her the experience to understand that students learn mathematics differently.

Meisner was named the Kaplan Fellow Award recipient in December of 2013, and she received the Instructional Academic Staff of the Year award in May.

Both were recognized at the UW Colleges Fall Convocation in Fond du Lac on August 28, 2014.

Seaborg was the recipient of the 2014 University of Wisconsin Colleges and University of Wisconsin-Extension Chancellor’s Friend & Advocate Award on Thursday, Septem-ber 18 in Madison, Wisconsin. This statewide award is bestowed once a year upon one individual or organization outside the UW Colleges and UW-Extension that have given substantial support to one or both institutions’ outreach mission at the local, state, na-tional or international level. Seaborg is the original architect of the UW-Marinette cam-pus, built in 1965. Over the past 50 years throughout the evolution of the campus, John has been a supportive presence and active contributor to its growth and success.

He just completed 8 years of service on the UW-Marinette Foundation Board, including serving as its Vice President and President. In addition to providing ongoing facilities and equipment support, John has also been instrumental in supporting the mission of the campus, and has lent his support in every decade since the beginning of the campus.

“This was, indeed, an honor for our campus,” said Dean Paula Langteau. “Each year, there is only one recipient in each of these award cat-egories from across all 13 UW Colleges’ campuses, statewide. These rewards reflect not only the excellence of these two remarkable teachers but also of the quality of instruction for which our campus has become known. We are exceptionally proud of the caliber of our faculty and instructional academic staff members.”

“John has provided 50 years of ongoing support for our campus,” said Dean Paula Langteau, who wrote the nomination with support from County Board Chair Vilas Schroeder and three other campus and community members, “and we are so pleased he is being recognized with this award for his continued, vital commitment.”

The life of Theatre on the Bay Founding Artistic Director Herbert L. Williams (Feb. 11, 1935 - March 19, 2014), was celebrated

with a memorial tribute on July 26 in the theatre named in his honor on the UW-Marinette campus. More than 150 friends, family and colleagues attended the tribute to honor a man whose work had a profound impact on all who participated in and patronized theatre in our community.

Herb’s legacy has greatly influenced the performing arts at UW-Marinette and touched the lives of countless students, actors, musi-cians, designers, tech crews and community members during his illustrious career. Because of his tireless commitment, The Herbert L. Williams Theatre continues to innovate and delight audiences of all ages.

This year, theatre patrons were offered season ticket packages for both Children’s Theatre and Theatre on the Bay which allowed theatre-goers to choose from three different packages depending on their individual tastes.

In February, former Children’s Theatre Director Jamie Schwaba di-rected 36 young actors in E.B. White’s classic tale, Charlotte’s Web.

Rebecca Stone Thornberry, Artistic Director of Theatre on the Bay, directed Crimes of the Heart in the spring. Theatre on the Bay saw over 800 patrons attend the Kander and Ebb production of Cabaret - Herb Williams favorite play - which was produced in his honor and directed by John Thornberry. Cabaret was last performed at TOB over 40 years ago.

The Children’s Theatre musical Doctor Dolittle, Jr., also directed by Schwaba, was enjoyed by patrons in October and Stone Thorn-berry rounded out the year by directing the classic murder mystery An Inspector Calls, (featuring our very own Dean Langteau as Sybil Birling!) which received rave reviews in November.

The performing arts come alive each theatre season because of gra-cious donations by our dedicated friends. To continue Herb’s legacy at UW-Marinette, a Herbert L. Williams Memorial Fund has been established for improvements to the Herbert L. Williams Theatre and enhancements to theatre programming on the campus. To date, more than $12,000 has been raised.

UW-Marinette’s Office of Continuing Education was awarded a generous grant from Lockheed Martin to

bring a hands-on educational STEM (Science-Technology-Engineering & Math) experience to over 700 local 7th & 8th grade students in March.

“We recognize the need for a steady pipeline of young, tech-nical talent in Wisconsin and Michigan to help grow the state’s technology footprint,” said Joe North, vice president of Littoral Ship Systems at Lockheed Martin. “We’re proud to partner with local schools to discuss career paths, provide demonstrations and inspire more students to study STEM-related fields.”

During STEM Outreach Days, engineers from Lockheed Martin discussed their careers and demonstrated machines they use on the job. Students were able to participate in a variety of hands-on activities and demonstrations sponsored by Allied Health Chiropractic Center of Peshtigo, ChemDe-sign, The Dickinson-Iron-Menominee Mathematics Science Technology Center, Earthaven Museum, Marinette Middle

School’s LEGO Mindstorm Club, KS Kolbenschmidt US Inc, UW-Marinette’s Modern Shipbuilding Program, Wis-consin KEEP, Wisconsin Maritime Museum and Wisconsin Public Service. These activities included observing a factorial distillation, walking through a portable planetarium, maneu-vering through a virtual shipyard, learning about renewable energy by powering a light bulb with a bike and engineer-ing with LEGOs. A STEM Outreach Day was held at each of the following schools: Menominee Jr. High, Peshtigo Middle School and Marinette Middle School.

“It is such an honor to be working with so many fine local organizations, businesses and schools to provide these impor-tant STEM-related opportunities. Though 7th and 8th grade students are relatively young, they will be the leaders and in-novators of tomorrow. If we give them the right tools and knowledge today, we can impact the future positively. We are very grateful to Lockheed Martin for their dedication and support of these exciting days,” said event organizer Jamie Schwaba, former Interim Continuing Education Program Co-ordinator at UW-Marinette.
