The summer of 2012 saw Purdue alumni contribute to international success with USA Deaf Soccer at the Deaf World Cup in Turkey and the Canadian Women’s National Team at the Olympic Games in London. Felicia Schroeder (2007-08) was part of USA Deaf Soccer’s World Cup victory. She was named U.S. Soccer’s inaugural winner of the Disabled Athlete of the Year award in November 2012. In the summer of 2013, she was the top scorer for the USA Deaf National Team as the Americans won gold at the Deaflympics. Schroeder is now the director of operations for the women’s soccer team at the University of Cincinnati. Lauren Sesselmann (2001-05) helped Team Canada win the bronze medal at the 2012 Olympic Games, Canada’s first women’s soccer medal since the sport was added to the program in 1996. She also became the first Purdue women’s soccer alumnus to medal at the Olympic Games. In Canada’s six games at the Olympics, Sesselmann was on the pitch for the duration of the tournament except for the final 21 minutes of the opener against Japan. She helped the Canadians post three shutout wins. Sesselmann also helped Team Canada win gold at the 2011 Pan Am Games in Mexico. Sesselmann was a starting defender for FC Kansas City for the inaugural season of the National Women’s Soccer League in 2013. She helped FCKC finish tied atop the regular-season standings and qualify for the playoffs. But she suffered a knee injury after being acquired by the Houston Dash and missed the entire 2014 season.

The Golden Boot, which was introduced in 2002, is awarded each year to the winner of the Purdue-Indiana regular-season match. The Boilermakers hold a 12-3-3 advantage in the all-time series and did not lose a regular-season game against the Hoosiers from 2000 through 2011. Highlighted by a hat trick from Kellie Phillips, Purdue tied a program record with eight goals in the 2011 win.

Each season since 2005, Purdue has worn an alternate jersey for one game to support a cause. The shirts are auctioned off after the game, and all proceeds are donated to that cause. Cancer research, our armed forces, the environment, domestic violence prevention and autism research have all been featured. This season, the Boilers are set to wear pink jerseys for their Oct. 25 game vs. Indiana, benefitting cancer research again and the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

In conjunction with Indiana State’s Locks of Love spring tournament, the Boilermakers have regularly contributed to the cause. Brookley Rogers and Lauren Varnau made hair donations in 2011. Locks of Love is an organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children in the U.S. and Canada suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis. The rest of the team contributed other hair-related items.
