On offer this year are a strong set of 2012 and 2013 born bulls with a variety of genetics and phenotypes to work in any herd. This year there will be a total of 43 bulls for sale, including 22 yearlings, 5 long yearlings and 16 two year olds. There are black bulls, red bulls, homozygous polled bulls, TT bulls, heifer bulls - bulls that will work for every program.We have a couple of exciting changes for this year’s sale. We will be working with Vold Jones and Vold for our online auction this year. Bull videos will be available on the VJV website prior to the sale so you can bid with confidence and the sale will also be broadcast live online with real-time bidding.We have also welcomed a new guest consignor to the sale this year. Zoltin’s father, Xpectation, was a sire we used in our heifer pen for 2 years and we also gave him the opportunity to breed some of the better females in our herd. Zoltin is the best of the whole bunch, black, smooth double polled and a maternal half-brother to XLR 14A (Lot 36) he is a clean made bull with a top notch pedigree to go with his strong muscle pattern. He can go to work right away on a larger group of heifers or young cows and have healthy, good-looking calves. Zoltin’s calves will have excellent growth once they get going and he would add some quarter to a group of British based females while still keeping the muscle of a Limo.

The first bull calf of last year did not disappoint, Andrew is a good footed, free moving Wanderer son with plenty of growth, a long spine and one of the biggest hips we have seen out of Wanderer. Our Wanderer calves over the past 3 years have easily out performed all other sire groups once on feed. His calves never take a day off from growing and are sure to shine for any cattlemen who is back grounding calves or feeding them right up to butcher. This Westwood son could really be a big time game changer. He comes with just an 85lb birth weight and with Freedom and Sniper in his dam’s pedigree he has the makings to be a great heifer bull that will still put weight on the calves when fall rolls around. Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs) are the most reliable predictor of an animal’s genetic merit, and the most powerful tool that is available for making genetic progress. An EPD predicts the difference in performance of future offspring of a parent, as compared to progeny from other parents, when each are bred to mates of equal value. The observed performance of an animal is determined by both genetics and environment, so EPDs only predict differences due to genes passed on from parent to offspring and actual performance will vary based on the individual animal’s specific genes and environmental factors.By comparing an animal’s EPD for a given trait to the average EPD of all animals in the breed, you can determine if the animal is above or below average and whether they will add desirable traits to your herd. For Gestation Length and Birthweight, a lower number is more desirable indicating a shorter gestation/lower birth weight. Limousin bulls have been used since 1986 on my 150 head of crossbred cows, consisting of Limousin/Simmental and Hereford. The results have worked well providing a solid color and fleshier calves with bigger butts - bigger butts are where the meat matters.
