Song: IWillFollowGodsPlan(CS,164165)Scripture: D&C138:5556Lesson: TheGreatCouncilinHeavenFriend,January1983Beforethisearthwasorganizedsothatwecouldliveonit,welivedveryhappilyasspiritchildrenofourheavenlyparents.Ourspiritslookedlikethephysicalbodiesthatwehavenow,andeachspirithadadistinctpersonalitywithstrengthsandweaknesses.Whileinthisspiritworld,wegrewuntilwecouldnolongerprogresswithoutaphysicalbody.WewantedtoproveourworthinessandbecomemorelikeourHeavenlyFather.Wewereanxioustoreceiveaphysicalbodyandundergoatimeoftesting.HeavenlyFathercalledagreatcouncilofallHisspiritchildren.Allthenobleandgreatoneswhowouldliveontheearthweretherefutureprophets,apostles,presidents,mothersandfathers,andallthosewhowouldcometoearthinthelastdaystoteachthegospeltothepeopleoftheworld.HeavenlyFatherexplainedthatanearthwouldbepreparedforusandthatwewouldeachreceiveaphysicalbody.Whileonearth,wewouldhaveouragency,thefreedomtochoosebetweenrightandwrong.Ofcourse,HeavenlyFatherknewwewouldbehappierifwechosetheright,butagencymeantthatwewouldalsohavetheabilitytochoosethewrong.Tohelpusmakerightchoices,wewouldbetaughtgospelprinciplessothatwewouldknowhowweshouldlive.HeavenlyFathertoldusthatafterwewerebornonearth,wewouldnotrememberourlifeinheaven.Wewouldneedtousefaith,totrustinGodwithoutbeingabletoseeHim.HeavenlyFatherknewfromHisownexperiencesthatchoosingtherightissometimesveryhardbutthatthiswouldmakeusstronger.HealsoknewthatsomeofHischildrenwouldchooseevilandwouldbeunabletoreturntoHim,howevermuchHelovedthem.HeavenlyFatherknewwewouldallmakemistakes,andHeexplainedthatwewouldneedasavior,apersonwhowouldbewillingtoatoneforoursinssothatwecouldreceiveforgivenesswhenwerepent.OneoftheSpiritsamonguswaslikeGod.HeofferedtoserveHeavenlyFatherandbeasaviorforallthespiritchildren.ThiswasJesus.BecauseofHisgreatloveforus,Hisbrothersandsisters,HeofferedtogiveHislifetoatoneforoursins.HewouldalsoteachuswhatwemustdotoreturntoHeavenlyFather.UnselfishlyHesaid,Father,thywillbedone,andtheglorybethineforever.Lucifer,anotherofGodsspiritsons,proposed,Behold,hereamI,sendme,Iwillbethyson,andIwillredeem[save]allmankind,thatonesoulshallnotbelost,andsurelyIwilldoit;whereforegivemethinehonor.

Luciferswillful,gloryseekingplanwouldhaveforcedallthechildrenofGodtoreturntoheaven.Hewantedtotakeawayourgreatestgift,therighttochooseforourselves.Luciferwouldnothaveallowedanyonetomakeawrongdecision,andwewouldhavebeenlikepuppetswithhimcontrollingus.SomeofGodschildrenlikedLucifersidea,andonethirdofthemdecidedtofollowhim.HeavenlyFatherlovedLuciferandthesespiritchildren,butbecausetheyrefusedtofollowHisplan,theywerenolongerworthytoremainwithHim.Thereforetheywerecastoutofheavenandcouldnotbebornontheearthandreceivephysicalbodies.ManyofthosewhofollowedHeavenlyFathersplanwereordainedtodoimportantthingsonearth.Eachofushasreceivedspecialtalentsandabilitiesthatcanbeincreasedwhenweusethemtohelpeachother.HeavenlyFatherhasprovidedeverythingweneedtoreturntoHim.Activity1: SharingTime:IknowGod'sPlanFriend,June2003Mountonheavypaper;thencut

Song: FamiliesCanBeTogetherForever(CS,188)Scripture: Genesis2:18Lesson: SharingTime:TheGreatestGiftFriend,April2002IsaacandRebekahweretobemarried.Theirfamilieswerejoyfulthattheseyoungpeoplehadfoundsomeonefaithfultomarry.Theyknewhowimportantitwastobemarriedinthecovenant.(Whenyouaremarriedinthecovenant,youaresealedbytheholypriesthoodtobemarriedtoeachotherforeternity.ThatisHeavenlyFatherspromisetoyou;youpromiseHimtolivetobeworthyofthisblessing.)TheyknewthatifIsaacandRebekahmarriedinthecovenant,theywouldreceivemanywonderfulblessings.Everyonewashappy.Doesthissoundlikeotheryoungmenandwomenyouknowwhomarryinthecovenantbybeingsealedinthetemple?Itis.ThedifferenceisthatIsaacandRebekahlivedthousandsofyearsago,duringOldTestamenttimes,andtheydidntknoweachotherbeforebecomingengaged.Isaacsfather,Abraham,knewhowimportantitwasforIsaactomarryafaithfulwomanwhobelievedinGodashedid.AbrahamknewthatdoingsowastheonlywaythatIsaaccouldbemarriedinthecovenantandreceivealltheblessingsthatHeavenlyFatherhadpromised.AbrahamwassoconcernedaboutthisthathesenthisservantmilesandmilesawaytosearchforthewomanwiththesamereligiousbeliefsasIsaacandwhowaschosenbyGodforhimtomarry.TheLordhelpedAbrahamsservantfindRebekah.SheagreedtomarryIsaac,eventhoughshehadnevermethim.YoucanreadmoreaboutIsaacandRebekahsmarriageinGenesis24[Gen.24].WhywasitsoimportantforIsaacandRebekahtomarrysomeoneinthecovenant?WhyisitimportantforyoutomarryarighteousmemberoftheChurchinthetemple?Whenyouaremarriedinthetemple,youarepromisedtheblessingsofAbraham,Isaac,andJacob(seeGen.22:1718).Oneoftheseblessingsisthatyouandyourfamily,throughpriesthoodpower,canbesealedtogetherforever.ThisisawonderfulgiftfromHeavenlyFather.TheLordpromisedthisandotherblessingstoAbrahamsrighteousdescendants.Theywerepromisedthepriesthoodandweregiventheresponsibilitytoteachthegospeltootherssothatallfamilieseverywheremighthavetheblessingsofsalvation,evenoflifeeternal(Abr.2:11).Whenyougrowupandgotothetemple,youwilllearnmoreabouttheblessingsofsalvationandthegreatplanofhappiness.Youwillmakecovenants.Ifyoukeepyourcovenants,HeavenlyFatherwillblessyouwiththegreatestofallthegiftsofGod,whichiseternallife(seeD&C14:7).Bychoosingtomarryinthecovenant,asIsaacandRebekahdid,youcanhavethegreatblessingstheLordwantstogiveyouandyourfamily.Activity1: SharingTime:TheGreatestGiftFriend,April2002Activity2: ColoringPageFriend,August2009

Week4:Forgivenessbringspeace.Song: IAmaChildofGod(CS,23)Scripture: Philippians4:7Lesson: PeaceinForgivingFriend,September1994Considerthislessontaughttomemanyyearsagobyapatriarch,whomIwillcallJohn.HewasassaintlyamanasIhaveeverknown.Hiswasalifeofservice,bothtotheChurchandtohiscommunity.AlthoughIthoughtIhadknownhim,hetoldmethingsabouthislifeIwouldnothavesupposed.Johngrewupinalittlecommunity.Hehadadesiretomakesomethingofhimself.Hestruggledtogetaneducation.Hewaswellemployed,hehadmarriedhissweetheart,andshewasexpectingtheirfirstbabyeverythingwasjustright.Thenightthebabywastobeborn,therewerecomplications.Theonlydoctorwassomewhereinthecountryside,tendingtothesick.Aftermanyhoursoflabor,hiswifesconditionbecamedesperate.Finallythedoctorwaslocated.Heactedquickly,thebabywasborn,andeverythingseemedtobeallright.However,somedayslater,theyoungmotherdiedfromtheveryinfectionthatthedoctorhadbeentreatingatanotherhomethatnight.Noweverythingwasallwrong.Johnhadlosthiswife,andhehadnowaytotendthebabyanddohisworktoo.Hegrewangryandbitter.Thatdoctorshouldnotbeallowedtopractice,hesaid.Hebroughtthatinfectiontomywife.Ifhehadbeencareful,shewouldbealivetoday.Onenightaknockcameathisdoor.Alittlegirlsaidsimply,Daddywantstotalktoyou.Daddywasthestakepresident.Thisspiritualshepherdhadbeenwatchinghisflock.Hiswisecounselwassimple:John,leaveitalone.Nothingyoudoaboutitwillbringyourwifeback.Anythingyoudowillmakeitworse.John,leaveitalone.Myfriendwonderedhowhecouldleaveitalone.Rightwasright!Aterriblewronghadbeendone,andsomebodymustpayforit!Buthedecidedatlasttofollowthecounselofthestakepresident.Hewouldleaveitalone.
