Methodology

Clinical Professionals’ 2014 UK and European pharmaceutical salary surveys were conducted online with professionals from within the pharmaceutical industry. The respondents included professionals both registered and not registered with the Clinical Professionals Group.

Respondents to the salary survey were invited to complete the salary survey through a link distributed through a number of mailshots to our database of active candidates, in addition to social media networks and our websites.

To ensure that there was no duplication of responses, cookies were used, and duplicate responses were removed when identical contact details were seen.

The questions within all the surveys were worded to ask open questions which were unbiased to create an accurate portrayal of the salaries within the pharmaceutical industry across Europe.

To allow for comparison between the UK and European salary survey responses, both the UK and European salary surveys asked the same questions to respondents, which were identically worded to prevent differences and ensure integrity.

To reflect the higher average salaries found within the physician and medic sectors, the questions asked within the Only Medics salary survey were adjusted with higher salary bandings.

The results from the surveys were then analysed by the MarComms team at Clinical Professionals, using the statistics and data from our previous surveys, and from The Clinical Professionals Group’s experience of recruiting within the pharmaceutical industry.

Overall Observations & Analysis Although the economic downturn of recent years is

still having a sustained effect on the pharmaceutical industry, the year on year breakdowns show little change in the salaries within each sector.

This table shows overall comparisons between the salaries of differing sectors within the industry and their senior positions.

For in depth observations of the different sectors, see their corresponding areas in this document.

As expected, the increase in experience usually results in an increase in seniority and salary banding, as well as employees generally being happier with their salary level and benefits. You can also see from the graph above that the percentage of respondents with benefit packages has increased from last year, which shows the importance of working in the right role/organisation includes more than just considerations on salary.

From the next graph you can see that at about the £49,000 pa level (a slight drop from last year’s £50,000 pa), you have a switch in those that are happy with their salary and those that are not. When we investigated this further with their level of benefits (including bonuses), we found that it was the best point to aim for when in the lower bands in order to have a gratifying career ladder.

When we have talked in depth to those we are recruiting, they found that being able to identify the positions with this salary banding (within their sector), and therefore the career path required to get there, meant they were much more successful in reaching this step in their profession than if they had aimed directly for a larger salary.

For each sector we have included you will be able to see the levels and job titles most associated with this career switch point (the ‘salary banding switch point’ - SBSP), which allows you to map your career effectively, as well as appropriately plan your training and career steps.

Since the different sectors in pharma can vary in this way, we are happy to break any areas down further upon request, especially if you would like to know an accurate SBSP for your particular expertise.

Page 7: 2014 Pharmaceutical Salary Survey

07

Clinical Professionals 2014 Salary Survey : Overall Observations & Analysis

It is worth noting that compared to last year’s figures, you can see much more variance in the graph despite the similar SBSP value. This reflects what we have seen this year, with more employees in the industry becoming unsure of their correct salary level. This hasn’t actually changed the SBSP greatly, as there has also been an increase in those reflecting their salary satisfaction in the higher bandings.

When you look at the breakdowns of information relating to our “looking for role” responses, you can clearly see which sectors have potentially the largest staff turnovers.

QA/QC and medical communications appear to have either the highest staff changes, or at least those most dissatisfied with their current position, although its worth noting that Med Comms can be a vastly different sector than ones such as QA/QC and therefore has a slightly different working environment.

When we compared the information gathered for the “looking for role” responses against their respective salary bandings, we found that the greatest variance was at the high end, with almost 90% of those with a salary above 80k currently looking for a new role. This seems to suggest that those above the Salary banding switch point (SBSP) are always looking for a new position, and have the confidence and job satisfaction to pursue those greater career opportunities.

The overall slight drop in the SBSP does mean we are seeing a rise in job satisfaction, and therefore those more in control of their career and role packages. This is clearly indicating that those more likely to move into new a position over the next year, which as the global economy slowly recovers, will raise hiring confidence within employers (and will potentially continue to lower the SBSP).

Observations

EUROPEAN

Our results from the Eurozone came up with some interesting comparisons, which when contrasted with its recovery after the economic downfall of recent years, showed an overall stable industry with some vast variances based on particular countries.

The calculated SBSP (Salary Banding Switch Point) for the largest Pharmaceutical focused EU countries came to ~€62k, which more or less falls in line with UK expected levels (with allowances for varying exchange rates).

The results from our respondents have shown how different the benefits packages can be when compared to the UK. Some countries such as Switzerland do show very strong salaries and benefits packages, but generally the higher salaries are reflected in the reduced benefits within the EU.

The average salary by job title results show that as expected, the senior versions of each role have an increased salary, and the list now incorporates many additional job titles as compared to previous years. This year’s results show a similar average salary by job title to last year’s results with some job titles having a slight increase such as CRA and Study Manager roles.

The average salary by experience in industry graph shows a steady salary increase in the clinical research industry, with employees gradually gaining higher salaries as their experience level increases. Although the salary level for 10+ years may seem relatively low, in comparison to other sector, this is likely to be due to some employees within clinical research staying in lower seniority roles, rather than moving to a more senior job role as they gain more experience.

Benefits at a GlanceWithin the clinical research sector, the majority of the respondents receive a bonus, private healthcare, car allowance and pension as part of their salary. Last year the highest single benefit was ‘Group pension scheme’

but in the European data, the most common benefit is ‘Private medical cover’ which will be down mostly down to the UK’s National Health Service.

The European results for the experience in industry graph are similar to the UK trends. The 0-1 year sectors all have the same salary bracket, but depending on the role within the 10+ year bracket, the salary can range from 30k to 90k. You can see the progression for each job title and compare the experience levels to different job titles, helping you understand when would be a good time to initiate a promotion or career move.

The results from the medical affairs / information sector showed that 53% of respondents from Europe thought that their salary reflected their level of experience. This is in contrast to the responses from the UK salary survey where the majority of respondents did not feel that their salary reflected their level of experience.

The table above shows the average salary for each job title across the main European countries that responded to both our UK and European pharmaceutical salary surveys within the medical affairs / information sector.

Benefits at a GlanceThe graph below shows that although the European respondents were less likely to receive benefits than their UK counterparts, nearly 75% of respondents to the European salary survey received a bonus as part

of their benefit package. Training & development and private healthcare benefits were also common, with just under half of respondents confirming that they received them.

Based on 2013’s results where 80% of candidates were disatisfied with their salary there has been a slight decrease. At 75% this is still one of the highest results across the salary survey where the majority of candidates did not think that their salary reflected their level of experience. This high level of QA professionals not being happy with the salary has a direct link with the 59% of candidates who will be looking for a new role within the next 12 months.

The table on the left shows the average salary by job title from the respondents for the health economics / market access sector. Although it may seem unusual that some of the higher level roles have lower average salary bands within health economics/market access, this is partly due to some employees moving into senior job roles within health economics/market access, having had little or no previous experience within the sector. This indicates that although the average salary by experience grows steadily, the average salary by job title can be more variable.

Benefits at a GlanceThe graph below shows that the majority of respondents reported receiving a bonus, private healthcare and a work pension as part of their benefit package. Although this appears to be a better benefit package than the majority of

other sectors, in comparison to last year’s results, respondents were less likely to receive income protection, life assurance, training & development, and membership to professional associations.

The response from the average salary by job title within biostatistics shows that salaries vary greatly between the different job roles, lower seniority roles received a salary of £20-30k, whilst director and other high level roles received over £80k.

Benefits at a GlanceThe majority of respondents reported that they received private healthcare, a work pension and life assurance as part of their added benefits. Overall this year’s respondents received a larger range of

benefits compared to 2013’s respondents who often had smaller benefit packages. This was a direct result of the high level of competition for roles within biostatistics.

The table above shows that salaries within biostatistics gradually increase as the employee gains more experience within the industry. In comparison to last year’s results, salaries for between three and ten years experience have slightly decreased.

Salaries for other job roles / experience levels have remained static. This would indicate employees receiving higher levels of benefits, the result is a slight decrease in salary for some job roles.

The most common salary for the respondents of our salary survey who work within biometrics is £40-50k. However, in comparison to some of the other sectors within the pharmaceutical industry, the results were fairly evenly spread across the salary ranges.

As with a lot of the pharmaceutical sector results, the majority of respondents were based in either London or the South East, as there is a concentration of pharmaceutical companies having offices in these locations. Interestingly there was also a higher percentage of respondents from the North West and North East within this sector.

The table here shows the average salary by job title. Overall, most of the average salaries by job title were roughly the same as 2013’s results, with the only noticeable large increase being senior medical writers/ editors respondents.

Benefits at a GlanceThe survey responses from medical communications’ candidates showed that, similar to other sectors, the majority of employees working within medical

communications’ received a bonus as part of their salary benefit package.

The table above shows that within medical communications, the average salary gradually increases directly alongside experience. In comparison to last year’s results, the average salary bandings for employees with over 3 years experience was slightly higher, with average salaries for employees with less than 3 years experience staying the same.

Pharmaceutical PhysiciansThe Only Medics salary survey was run separately to the Clinical Professionals Group’s other sectors, to reflect the different ranges and packages available to physicians. The results here have been divided into 3 main functional specialisms; Medical affairs

Physicians, Drug safety (Pharmacovigilance) Physicians and Clinical Research Physicians.Pharmaceutical physicians generally receive a larger benefits package in comparison to some other areas surveyed.

The results from the Only Medics survey demonstrated that as salaries increased, employees were more likely to believe that their salary accurately reflected their level of experience (not shown here). The ‘salary banding switch point’ – SBSP for the Only Medics sectors was significantly higher than the other sectors, with the SBSP for physicians being the top salary banding of £81k. Of course this is reflected in the overall higher salary of the function, and therefore is actually a comparatively lower step to reach than that of other functional areas surveyed.

Proportion of Responses within Salary Ranges

The majority of the responses from the salary survey were from employees earning over €110k, which should be taken into account when analysing the results.

Most of the respondents were based in Germany, France or the UK, with the remaining respondents being based across a range of European countries.

The largest experience level percentile from our responses came within the broad 10+ year bracket; which shows the direct correlation between the large salaries and experience, and also a reason why our respondents would have certain benefits in their packages 100% of the time.

Just over half our pharmaceutical physician respondents reported not feeling their salary represented their experience level within the industry (53%). However, this is slightly lower than most over functional areas within pharmaceuticals, and only second to Drug Safety/Pharmacovigilance (38%).

This is reflected in the more attainable SBSP for physicians, and therefore shows a slightly higher job satisfaction than other functional areas.

However, when you look at how the 3 different areas of pharmaceutical physicians answered the question “Do you think your salary reflects your experience level?”, you find the overall figure doesn’t show how much it varies. Clinical research physicians and Medical Affairs physicians have responses of 54% and 49% of those that feel their salary does not reflect their level of experience.

Yet 66% of pharmacovigilance physicians reported that their salary was not correct for their experience level, in stark contrast to the non-physician job roles within the Drug Safety sector which sees a rather high level of salary satisfaction compared to other functional areas. Looking at the average salaries, we have seen it slightly lower for the PV physician than for Medical affairs or Clinical research counterparts, of which the SBSP value is still about the same level and initially suggests more room for improvement.

Traditionally, functions such as monitoring would be retained in house with permanent staff within a bio-pharmaceutical organisation. Alternatively, an organisation may choose to outsource entire clinical studies (full service CRO).

The FSP model allows separation of core/non-core capabilities within your company allowing you to choose providers specialising in a discipline e.g. Clinical Monitoring, Biostatistics, Orphan Drug or Oncology.

Clinical Professionals’ FSP model additionally allows you to retain functional control, have confidence in staff retention, lower cost and allow greater flexibility.

This removes the burden of employment and often reduces day-to-day management requirements but has the benefits of strategic control and direct integration within functions of your business.

What is a Functional Service Provider or FSP?

“For me, it is knowing that I have the support of the FSP team, not only in the recruitment stages, but on an on-going basis, for the duration of each assignment.”

A current partnership in a specialist department of a top 10 pharmaceutical organisation achieved:

• 50% reduction in the amount of time required during the recruitment process for new staff coming into the FSP.

• Within 24 hours of a resource request being received, Clinical Professionals have provided a high standard of candidates to be considered for the FSP.

• The added service levels as part of that FSP has enabled that client’s line managers more time to focus on their own role, due to the support via Clinical Professionals to manage the FSP team members.

ValueThe reason for introducing an FSP model is often driven by the desire to create efficiencies within the resourcing and conduct of studies, without compromising on quality.

As well as providing value regarding recruitment and management of quality staff into your team via the FSP, the collaboration between client and FSP partner can bring further value by reviewing items such as processes and training, to create further efficiencies in the way the team is managed to increase productivity.

The more significant but indirect cost saving relating to the efficiencies generated via an FSP is the reduced cycle time enabling clients to get drugs to market sooner and in a more cost efficient manner.

GovernanceIt is imperative that the partnerships forged between the sponsor and Clinical Professionals is managed appropriately, and governance forms a crucial part of the relationship.

Our Governance meetings are held at least bi-annually in order to review the current status of the FSP service, discuss areas of success and identify areas of improvement, plus the shared vision for the future of the relationship. Our FSP model continues to evolve throughout the lifecycle of the partnership, and governance enables this.

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) agreed by both parties at the beginning of the relationship are pivotal to measuring the performance of the relationship on an on-going basis, and review of these forms a large part of the governance meetings.
