/ / / 13 \ \ \

Selina B. KohnSelina Bynum Kohn was named interim director

of athletics in July 2014. She is the former head volleyball and women’s basketball coach for the

Lady Lions. Prior to being named interim director of athletics, Kohn served as the associate director of ath-letics and the senior woman administrator at Paine.

Kohn was recently honored at the 2014 NCAA Con-vention as one of two SIAC former student-athletes se-lected to be part of the 49-member NCAA Division II 40th Anniversary Tribute Team. The award celebrated not only Kohn’s dominance as a Division II athlete at Albany State but also her continuing legacy as a coach and administrator within Division II athletics. At the end of the 2006 academic year, Kohn made the decision to relinquish her responsibilities as head women’s basketball coach to move into administration and become the associate director of athletics and senior woman administrator. Kohn transitioned into a full-time administrator in 2012 when she also relin-quished her volleyball coaching duties.

Since becoming a full-time administrator and sport supervisor in 2012, Kohn has been instrumental in the success and growth of Paine student-athletes in their academic success and overall well-being.

As an administrator, some of her numerous respon-sibilities have included monitoring the academic progress of the department, overseeing team budgets and spending, managing the Department’s work study program, facilitating community service efforts, advising the Student-Ath-lete Advisory Committee, planning award ban-quets and aca-demic success recognition programs and coordinating officials for home contests.

As a volleyball coach, Kohn led the 2005 Lady Lions to an impressive 35-4 overall record. They placed first in the regular season and second in the SIAC tournament. The team also finished in first in the NCAA statistical standings in Division II for hitting percentage.

On the basketball court, Kohn guided the Lady Lions to back-to-back SIAC basketball championships and two trips to the NCAA tournament following the 2004-2005 and 2005-2006 seasons.

Kohn is a native of Thomasville, Georgia and a gradu-ate of Central High School where she participated on the softball, basketball and track teams. After graduat-ing from Central High School, Coach Kohn attended Albany State University in Albany, Georgia, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology in 1994. While attending Albany State University, she won the SIAC Conference Championship in 1990, and after completing her eligibility, she served as the Assistant Coach for the Lady Rams and helped lead them to two SIAC Basketball Championships in 1996 and 1999.

While playing for the Lady Rams, Coach Kohn had a record setting collegiate career. As a Lady Ram, Coach Kohn set five NCAA Division II Assist Re-cords, received the Albany State Basketball Most Valuable Player Award three times, selected to the SIAC All-Conference Team, received the Albany State Director of Athletics Award, named the ESPN Black College Female Player-of-the-Year (1991-1992 and in 1993 received an invitation to try-out for the USA Olympic Basketball Team (Colorado Springs). In 1993, Coach Kohn was named the NCAA Division II Wom-an-of-the-Year for Albany State University, as well as “A Legend in My Own Time” by Southside Middle School in Albany, Georgia (1989-1993).

HEAD COACH

/ / / 14 \ \ \

Greg RuffinGreg Ruffin is entering his second year at Paine College as head football coach after being hired to lead the Lions in March of 2013. Although he is new to Paine, Ruffin is not new to football or the re-creation of a program. Over the years, Ruffin has been an integral part of two different programs as they resurrected their football programs after lengthy absences (Shaw University in 2002 and Lincoln University in 1999).

Ruffin came to Paine College from Texas Southern University (TSU) in Houston, Texas, where he served as the recruiting coordinator and tight ends coach during the 2012 season. Prior to TSU, he served six seasons at Jackson State University helping the program win the 2007 Southwestern Athletic Conference Champi-onship and have a runner-up finish in 2009. In his duties at Jackson State, Ruffin served as the recruiting coordinator and running backs coach. Coach Ruffin came to JSU from Tuskegee University where he served as running backs coach under Head Coach Rick Comegy.

Before his arrival at Tuskegee in 2005, Ruffin served one season (2004) as defensive assistant coach at Ouachita Baptist University in Arkadelphia, Arkansas. Prior to Ouachita Baptist, he served one year (2002) as head football coach at Shaw University in Raleigh, North Carolina, where he resurrected their football program after a 23-year hiatus, propelling the first-year program to a 7-3 record. Ruffin also spent one year at Benedict College (2001) as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.

During two seasons (1999-2000) at Lincoln University in Jefferson City, Missouri, he worked in four differ-ent capacities - offensive coordinator, wide receivers coach, strength and conditioning coach and recruiting coordinator. He served on the staff of his alma mater, Lane College, for one season (1998) as receivers coach and recruiting coordinator.

His first collegiate coaching assignment was in 1997 with Kemper Military Community College in Boon-eville, Missouri, as the running backs coach. In 1997, Kemper Military finished 10-2 and was ranked sev-enth in the country in the National Junior College Athletic Association.

In 1995, Ruffin coached the wide receivers and defensive backs at Northside High School in Jackson, Ten-nessee, and the running backs in 1996 at Jackson Central-Merry High School.

Ruffin started as a freshman at quarterback at Wentworth Military Academy before transferring to Lane College in 1993. At Lane he was the starting fullback who paved the way for the late Fred Lane. Jr., who had a successful NFL career with the Carolina Panthers. In 1995, Lane posted a 9-1 record, the best in the school’s history.

He is a member of the Omega Psi Phi Fra-ternity, Inc., the American Football Coaches Association and the USSSA Baseball Um-pires Association. Ruffin is married to Mia B. Ruffin, and they are the parents of three. He is a graduate of Lane College (B.S. Criminal Justice) and Jackson State University (M.S. Sports Administration).
