2014 SEASON OUTLOOK After a record-setting year in 2013, the Lady Eagles softball program is poised to challenge its toughest confer-ence opponents for its first Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference championship in 2014. The team also is hungry for a second straight appearance at the NCCAA national tournament in Botetourt, VA, according to head coach Caty Reeves in her second season at the helm of the OKWU program.

The Lady Eagles return 13 players from last year’s 35-18 squad that finished third in the MCAC and earned an at-large berth in the NCCAA National Championship. Though the team was eliminated after two disappointing loss-es in the first round, it proved to be great experience in the program’s inaugural trip to a national tournament.

Not satisfied with last year’s program-best records, the Lady Eagles look to improve in every area this year while playing a very challenging se-ries of games. OKWU will launch their season with an away game Feb. 8 against Saint Gregory’s University, which finished the 2013 NAIA season ranked No. 16 in the nation.

“This year will truly test our team,” Reeves said. “We are playing a much tougher overall schedule than we did last year so that heading into postsea-son play we will be more than ready to compete at a higher level.”

TAKING THE FIELD With the addition of four fresh-men and a junior college transfer, the team is stronger than ever. The Lady Eagles welcome Western Nebraska Community College transfer Mariah Shepherd (Grantsville, UT), along with freshmen Alex Eichler (Denison, TX), Selena Lopez (Taylor, TX), Katelyn Cook (Atoka, OK) and Ty’Shonna Harris (Tulsa, OK).

Defense proved to be a strength in the 2013 campaign as the players posted a team fielding percentage of 0.963. The entire infield is back, including junior Leanne Salas (Richmond, TX) at first base and three seniors in Macy Wright (Ramona, OK) at second base, shortstop Miranda Kiser (Tulsa, OK) and Jessica Farris (Nowata, OK) at third base. Each of the three seniors earned individual all-conference honors for their play in 2013: Kiser was All-MCAC First Team, Wright was All-MCAC Second Team and Farris was Honorable Mention All-MCAC.

“I have no doubt our infield will continue to make the plays day in and day out,” Reeves said. Shepherd also will see playing time at third base, while Harris will bring competition to second base.”

All-MCAC First Team player Allison Edwards (Sr., Duncan, OK) will move from behind the plate to centerfield to lead the outfield. She will be joined by MCAC Honorable Mention Courtney Gililland (Jr., Anna, TX), Caitlin Day (Jr., Bartlesville, OK), Brittany Stevenot (Sr., Bartlesville, OK), and Eichler. “We have some people in the outfield that can not only cover some ground, but throw out people trying to advance at any moment,” Reeves said.

Many new faces will join the team’s battery, both on the mound and behind the plate. Sophomore Jenna Daniel (Stafford, TX) returns after a stellar season on the mound earning MCAC First Team All-Conference honors in her rookie season. She is joined by veteran pitcher Kim Billie (Sr., Tecumseh, OK) who saw a large number of innings as well.

Freshman Lopez will add another element to the pitching staff. “Selena will complement our pitchers well and I expect her to compete every day of the season with the other two for our ace spot,” Reeves said.

Page 5: 2014 OKWU Softball Media Guide

Behind the plate, returner Christie Bell (Jr., Sanger, TX) will be joined by freshmen Cook and Shepherd. “While Allison did a great job for us behind the plate last year, I’m excited to see what these other girls can do. They work well with the pitchers and improve their knowledge on a daily basis,” Reeves said. “Each one has continually improved since the fall and can be trusted to lead the defense.”

THE SEASON AHEAD After falling short against the Saint Gregory Cavaliers twice last year, the Lady Eagles are excited to have an-other opportunity to play such a competitive team at the beginning of the season. After that, they travel to Fort Worth, TX to participate in the Cowtown College Classic where they will face NCAA Division 1 Incarnate Word University, Baker University, Texas Wesleyan, Northwood University and Oklahoma City University.

The Lady Eagles will see Oklahoma City two other times, in the capital city on Feb. 27 and in Bartlesville on April 22. The OKC Stars were ranked No. 3 in the NAIA Softball Coaches’ Preseason Top 25 Poll released Jan. 21.

A trip to Ottawa University on Feb. 18 leads up to the home opener against Sterling College on Feb. 21. Evangel University and Kansas Wesleyan University then visit Feb. 22 for a three-team round robin. Other notable non-conference games include No. 15 (preseason) Oklahoma Baptist University (March 4 at OBU and April 5 at OKWU), Benedictine College (March 11 at OKWU), Ecclesia College (April 2 at OKWU) and Evangel University (April 17 at OKWU).

On March 14, the Lady Eagles open pool play at the David Fillmore Memorial Tournament hosted by Evangel University in Springfield, MO. There they will face first-time opponents Midland University, Cardinal Stritch Uni-versity and Morningside College before bracket play begins March 15. Soon after, OKWU will travel to Edmond, OK to take on NCAA Division 2 foe Oklahoma Christian University on March 18.

MCAC games begin March 8 as the Lady Eagles travel to Conway, AR to take on Central Baptist College before playing host to Haskell Indian Nations University (March 21) and Central Chris-tian College (March 22). Then March 28-29 OKWU travels to McPherson, KS to play the “north” teams of Bellevue University, College of St. Mary, York College, and Waldorf College in the first MCAC Crossover tournament. The second MCAC Crossover takes place April 11-12 in Bellevue, NE.

Central Baptist College returns a trip to OKWU April 4 before OKWU travels to Central Christian College (April 18) and Haskell Indian Nations University (April 19). NCCAA Division 3 opponent Greenville College visits OKWU on April 26 when seven seniors will play their last home games at the OKWU’s softball field.

The MCAC conference tournament, which determines the berth for the NAIA national tournament, will be played May 1-2 at the home of the regular season champion. OKWU also will participate in the NCCAA Regional Championships May 6-9 hosted by Okla-homa Christian in a bid for a second invitation to the NCCAA Na-tional Championships in Botetourt, VA on May 15-17.

LADY EAGLES COACHES

CATY REEVES HEAD COACH – SECOND SEASON AT OKWU CALIFORNIA BAPTIST UNIVERSITY, 2010

When the OKWU athletic department decided in 2013 that the Eagles soft-ball program should begin its third season with a full-time coach, it went looking for someone familiar with success. Athletic director Mark Molder found what he was looking for in Caty Reeves, a former NAIA national champion who arrived in mid-January eager to build on the foundation laid by former coach T.J. Thomas since 2011.

In her inaugural year, Reeves led the team to a school-best 35-18 record overall and a 16-4 record in the Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference. The Lady Eagles finished third in the conference and earned an at-large invi-

tation to the NCCAA national tournament in Botetourt, VA.

With the implementation of a more consistent training and weight program, Reeves helped the team improve in every category, most notably in slugging percentage, runs scored, RBIs and walks. Defensively, the Lady Ea-gles posted a .963 fielding percentage, second only to Bellevue’s .965 mark in the conference standings.

Reeves came to OKWU from McNeese State University in Lake Charles, LA where she was an assistant softball coach under Mike Smith, one of the most successful coaches in the NAIA before his move to the NCAA – D1 stage in 2011. She also played for Smith at California Baptist University from 2008 to 2011.

During her career as a catcher and designated hitter, Reeves helped the Lancers go 251 and 22, win four Gold-en State Athletic Conference titles and make four consecutive trips to the NAIA World Series. CBU won the national champi-onship in 2009, took second place in 2011, third in 2010 and fourth in 2008.

An all-around offensive player, Reeves finished her college ca-reer with 125 hits, 105 runs batted in, 19 home runs and 87 walks, a total second on the CBU all-time career records. She also recorded an on-base percentage of .452, fifth on the Lan-cers’ career records list. Defensively, Reeves was charged with just one error in 471 chances to finish her career with a 0.998 fielding percentage.

A NAIA Scholar Athlete in 2010 and 2011, Reeves also was named to the 2011 Capital One Academic All-American Softball Team (Second Team). She graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in math in 2010 and then started graduate school during her fourth year of eligibility. She completed her master’s degree in education in June, 2012.

Reeves grew up in Corvallis, Oregon and prepped at Crescent Valley High School, where she also played varsity basketball.

Top teams offer challenging start to 2014 There’s nothing easy about the Lady Eagles’ start to the 2014 season with multiple games in the first month against three of the top 20 teams in the NAIA Softball Coaches’ Preseason Poll.

In their first doubleheader of the year, the team heads to Shawnee Feb. 8 to meet the No. 19 Lady Cavaliers of St. Gregory’s University.

The following week, the Eagles travel to Ft. Worth, TX where they meet the No. 3 ranked Oklahoma City Stars in the Cowtown College Classic Feb. 14-15. They face the Stars again in Oklahoma City on Feb. 27 and will play them at home on April 22.

The Cowtown Classic also offers a chance to play a NCAA D1 team in the University of the Incarnate Word of San Antonio, TX. The Eagles play the

Cardinals in their first game of the tournament at 9 a.m. Saturday.

On March 4, the team makes a second trip to Shawnee to face Oklahoma Baptist. The Lady Bison are tied for No. 15 spot in the NAIA preseason poll. The Eagles also will host OBU at home on April 5.

“If we want to continue to improve and learn how to be the best, we have to compete against the best. We are lucky to be in a state that has multiple teams with strong winning traditions that know what it’s like to play at the national tournament. That’s where we want to be,” Reeves said.

2013 SEASON IN REVIEW The 2013 season was a turnaround year for the OKWU softball program. With a new full-time coach at the helm, the Lady Eagles posted a school best 35-18 record and saw their first trip to a national tournament .

The team’s win/loss record in 2013 was a nearly exact flip of the 2012 season record of 18-34.

After placing third in the Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference with a 16-4 record, the team received an at-large invitation to the NCCAA National Championship Tournament May 9-11 in Bo-tetourt, VA.

The Lady Eagles gave everything they had in the opening round of the tournament, but they came up short in the bottom half of a 12-inning pitching duel against Campbellsville (KY) to lose 2-1. The women then had to wait out two more extra-inning games before starting their second game at 9:15 p.m. Unfortunately, the Eagles’ offense couldn’t muster a single hit. The team lost 8-1 to the third-seeded Simpson Universi-ty (CA).

“Even though the results weren’t what we ex-pected, it was a great first experience at a na-

tional championship for our girls,” said head coach Caty Reeves. “We’ll be more prepared next year and will know what it takes to compete with some of the best teams in the NCCAA.”

The Lady Eagles improved by leaps and bounds in 2013 in nearly every category, most notably in slugging percentage, runs scored, RBIs and walks. They defeated their conference rival Central Baptist twice during the regular season, but lost to the Mustangs and to Bellevue in the conference finale to finish third. The Eagles also played neck and neck with some of the best teams in the NAIA, barely falling to Oklahoma City University, St. Gregory’s University and Rogers State University during the year.

As a team, they recorded a .279 batting average led by Miranda Kiser who hit .399 with a .497 on-base per-centage. Allison Edwards added the best power numbers blasting 15 home runs while hitting .345. Macy Wright and Jenna Daniel also hit .325 and .300 , respectively.

In the circle, the Eagles were led by senior Courtney Carson with a 3.19 ERA in 96.2 innings pitched. Freshman Jenna Daniel also posted a 3.19 ERA in 105.1 innings pitched and recorded a team high 137 strikeouts. Defensively, the Lady Eagles had a .963 field-ing percentage, one of the best in the NAIA.

Individual honors went to a record number of girls, including Ed-wards who earned the school’s first ever NCCAA Second Team All-American award. A total of seven players received All-MCAC hon-ors, more than in any other year since the program started in 2011. Those recognized were: First Team - Daniel, Edwards and Kiser; Second Team - Carson, Wright and Courtney Gilliland; and Honorable Mention - Candice Perkins.

“I am extremely proud of the girls and the effort they put out last year,” Reeves said. “I asked them to do things they had never done before and they stepped up and accepted the challenge.”

NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETICS

The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) is an autono-mous association administering athletic programs for approximately 300 member schools of moderate enrollment and more than 60,000 student athletes.

Its purpose is to promote education and development of students through intercollegiate athletic participation. Member institutions are diverse, yet they share a com-mon commitment to high standards and the principle that athletics are an integral part of education.

Established in 1940 as the National Association of Intercollegiate Basketball (NAIB), the association ex-panded in 1952 to include other sports and changed its name. The NAIA became the first intercolle-giate sports governing body to provide championship opportunities for both men and women and for students of all races. It currently administers programs related to 13 different sports and 23 national championships.

In 2000, the NAIA reaffirmed its purpose to enhance the character-building aspects of sport by intro-ducing the Champions of Character program. This initiative seeks to create an environment in which every student-athlete, coach, official and spectator is committed to the true spirit of competition through five core values: integrity, respect, responsibility, sportsmanship and servant leadership.

www.naia.org

NATIONAL CHRISTIAN COLLEGE ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION

The National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) was incor-porated to provide a Christian-based organization that functions uniquely as a national and international agency for the promotion of

outreach and ministry, and for the maintenance, enhancement, and promotion of intercollegiate ath-letic competition with a Christian perspective.

Established in 1968, the NCCAA is dedicated to implementing a positive and purposeful athletic experi-ence in cooperation with member institutions and their student-athletes. Membership has grown to about 100 Christ-centered colleges and universities. The NCCAA hosts 24 national championships and invitationals.

MIDLANDS COLLEGIATE ATHLETIC CONFERENCE

The Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference (MCAC) is one of 23 confer-ences in the NAIA organized to provide intercollegiate athletic opportuni-

ties among member institutions within a specific geographical region. The MCAC represents the Mid-west including Oklahoma, Missouri, Arkansas, Kansas, Nebraska and Iowa. It oversees six women’s sports (basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball and volleyball) and five men’s sports (baseball, basketball, cross country, golf and soccer).
