The Arabian Horse Association of Michigan

The Arabian Horse Association of Michigan (AHAM), is one of four clubs in Michigan dedicated to the promotion and well-being of the Arabian horse. AHAM works in conjunction with the other clubs to help with this promotion. AHAM is affiliated with Region 13, which encompasses Michigan and Indiana. They are actively involved in promoting the regional show and always strive to bring new people to the Region and their regional show.

Biography:

Blue Water Pleasure Horse Association was founded on January 23, 1976, by Dan and Mary Burgess. BWPHA offers a full

schedule of classes including English and Western Halter, Showmanship, Longe Line, Leadline, Western and English Walk Trot, In-Hand

Trail, Trail, and English and Western Pleasure, Horsemanship, and Equitation classes. Age groups range from pee wee, 12 & Under, 13-

18, 19-39, and 40 & Over. Entry fees are $6 per class, with blanket fees available. 2014 will see added emphasis on Youth exhibitors with

Youth Teams and activities. BWPHA offers a yearly $500 scholarship to youth exhibitors 16-18. The winner is announced at the year-end

Awards Banquet.

Year End Awards have included bronze statues, belt buckles, blankets, sheets, jackets, and a selection of many other great items

that members get to choose from. The membership nominates exhibitors for other year-end awards including the Trudell Award

(presented to the person most improved in Showmanship and Halter), Adult Sportsmanship Award, Youth Sportsmanship Award, and

Best Show Award, which are all announced at the year-end Awards Banquet.

Several shows are scheduled at the Sandusky Fairgrounds and most are 2-day shows. Sandusky has an indoor arena to facilitate

rainy days, enough stalls situated between 2 barns (some stalls are larger for the big horses), wash rack, very nice bathroom and

shower facilities, a covered Grandstand for leisurely seating and viewing, and electrical hookups for campers. Sandusky has plenty of

shopping and numerous restaurants very close to the fairgrounds. Sandusky’s show pen was re-worked a few years ago, and has

excellent footing. Concession stands are scheduled at all shows.

BWPHA participates in the “APHA-Paint Alternative Competition Program” and the “PHBA-Palomino Performance Program.” If you

have a color breed horse, these programs are very easy to participate in, and have some really nice prizes through APHA and PHBA.

This year we have changed our early June show (7th & 8th) to a two day, four judged show that will feature a fun, family event on Saturday evening, as well as additional sweepstakes classes both days. Kensington Trail Riders Association (KTRA) is a group of like minded individuals that span both genders and all age groups. Our horses are every breed and color imaginable. The common threads that connect us are our love of riding and a desire to keep Kensington Metro Park as a destination for trail riders. With more than 25 miles of equine riding, Kensington provides wide, sandy trails, diversity of terrain, and ease of access. KTRA members have work bee activities so everyone can enjoy the trails year-round for club activities and camping events. One of the highlights each year is the Billy Gunn Trail Challenge where we encouraged members and non-members alike to come and ride a mile, ride a trail, or ride all the trails in the park on a single day. We generally host two fun-filled camping weekends each year - one in spring, one in fall. Both camping weekends have a camp breakfast on Saturday morning and a camp potluck with a band on Saturday night. It is a wonderful, fun-filled event. The by-laws for MHDVA states, in part, that it shall be the purpose of the association to aim for the preservation and maintenance of carriages; carriage literature and related items; the exchange of information regarding horse-drawn vehicles and the development of the driving horse; to serve as an accurate and technical source of information for the benefit of its members and the general public; to encourage the use of carriages and other animal-drawn vehicles for the promotion of public interest in their contributions to our cultural, social and economic history; and promote knowledge of, and safety in, horse related activities.

The MJMHA is a statewide ruling body for Morgan horse owners and riders in the state of Michigan, and recognized officially by the American Morgan Horse Association. We promote this most versatile and regal American horse breed through the education of our members as well as the public at large.

Membership offers the benefit of exhibiting at our three horse shows, which are located at different venues throughout the show season. Two of our shows are AMHA Star Rated. In addition, we offer our own high point program that rewards participants for their performance, not only at MJMHA shows, but open and 4H shows as well.

MSPB&O

130 classes over two days, 4 judges for all pinto classes and 2 judges for all breed classes weekend high points in Pinto youth and amateur and 4 weekend high points for the all breed classes.

Pinto classes include a full slate of open, youth and amateur classes including novice youth and novice amateur classes. Youth 13 & under and 14 - 18, and junior, senior and elite amateur classes. All breed classes include leadline, walk/trot 18 & under and 19 & over, full slate of English and Western classes, including discipline rail and ideal for 18 & under and 19 & over. All breed classes also include pony/mini classes in halter, showmanship, in hand jumping, in hand trail and driving.

Exhibitors do not have to belong to MSPB&O to show, but must be a member to qualify for our year end awards. PtHA rules state that all exhibitors and horse owners must be a member of PtHA in order to show.

We have a weekend economy fee for both Pinto and all breed classes and it is cheaper to pre-enter than to enter at the shows. Entry checks are not cashed until after the show. All pre-entry forms, stall reservation forms, year end rules and other information can be found and downloaded from our website at mspbo.org.

An average of twelve different events are hosted each year. Our events are fun and unique - such as the Rotten Egg Hunt, The DAMN Midnight Ride, Drive In The Park and Ichabod Crane Days. Some events have special overnight camping available.

Most events are staged from our Horseman’s Staging Area.

Some events have youth divisions.

Some events have high points - such as winning a Poker Run or the Scavenger Hunt.

The WMAR is made up of a group of people that are dedicated to the promotion of the Appaloosa Horse. We put on three Appaloosa Horse Shows a year plus co-sponsoring a show with the Michigan Appaloosa Association (MApHA). To finish the year there is a banquet in conjunction with the Michigan Club. The Class Winners and High Point Horses are recognized with very nice awards for their accomplishments all year.


What is the average number of members? 150-200.


What breed/discipline does the association focus on? Appaloosa.

If breed association, is there an Incentive Program? We have an annual WMAR Incentive Program.

How many events do you hold each year? Four (3 shows, year-end awards banquet).

Where are they normally held? One show is in Mason, MI, One in Centreville, MI and One show is in East Lansing at the MSU Pavilion.

Is there a youth division? Yes, different age groups, lead-line, walk-trot and novice.

Is there an amateur division? Yes, non-pro, limited, novice, masters.

Are there daily high points? We have Weekend Show High Points for different divisions.

YSTRA MISSION STATEMENT

The purpose of the Yankee Springs Trail Riders Association is to preserve, protect, improve and expand existing horse campgrounds and the horse trail network in the Yankee Springs Recreation Area, and the surrounding areas, for use by horsemen, their families and the general public for horse riding and camping.

To develop and maintain good communications and working relationships with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, Parks and Recreation Division, and/or its successors. To assist them in their efforts to maintain adequate horse campgrounds and riding trails and to help generate revenue that will enable horse campgrounds to become self-supporting.

To promote horse riding and camping by providing information to the general public on the location of horse campground facilities, horse trails and the recreational benefits available.

Our Association was founded in 1989 by a group of riders that had been using the trails for quite some time. They decided that much more could be accomplished by organizing, and we have grown to over a hundred family memberships since then.

st stWe are a calendar year organization, offering family membership of $20.00 that runs from January 1 to December the 31 . We also offer a lifetime membership as well.

As a trail riding group we try to have at least 3 events per year, one being a fundraiser for another nonprofit organization, such as Cancer Families United. We also like to have a kid's FREE event once a year and then a club fund raiser for improvement's to camp and trails. Our events are held at our “ADOPT-A-PARK” Horseman’s Campground on Duffy Road in the Yankee Springs Recreation Area.

Our monthly meetings are held the second Wednesday of every month, usually with a potluck first and the meeting to follow. Except our Annual banquet meeting which is subject to new time and location as the board sees to change each year. At the annual meeting we usually have some youth awards that we like to present to our outstanding youth participation. Our newsletters are biannual.

YSTRA will continue to improve and create more equestrian trails for our trail system with the help of our public land managers. We will continue to work to improve the campground and possibly bring electricity to our horse camp one day.

What goals would you like to see your association obtain in 2014? Increased membership and more open breed participants. We are offering Open Breed Sweepstakes!


We are a volunteer group made up of seven 4-H clubs, with one club in existence for over 40 years. We meet monthly to promote leadership, horsemanship and growth for our youth, which includes not only our show season, but also community service. Our organization sponsors a Horse Bowl Team, as well as candidates from our county to attend the State 4-H Horse Show in August. Our Executive Board includes Leaders and Youth from our clubs, with each member taking responsibility to chair committees for our shows, education and community outreach.

Our open shows are designed to have something for everyone, from the smallest competitors in Cloverbuds through Adults. We are proud to have varied Dressage class offerings, from traditional Dressage classes to Gaited, Saddle Seat and Western Dressage classes. We are able to provide a wide variety of classes for exhibitors to choose from by fundraising, including the Sponsor Book produced for our 4-H Achievement Days. This year’s 4-H Achievement Days will run the second weekend in July and includes Championship Classes, Team Event classes and themed Stall Decorations. This year’s theme, “Travel” will be featured on the cover of our Sponsor Book, which showcases area businesses and individuals who contribute to supporting the 4-H program in Genesee County and on t-shirts for clubs. This special week is meant to celebrate everyone’s accomplishments and create memorabilia for our youth. Following Achievement Days, we turn our focus to the Genesee County Fair and running two separate show days for 4-H riders and other open riders who participate in all the Fair has to offer. We plan on doing community outreach to those attending the fair, encouraging attendees to learn more about horses and sportsmanship.

We have lots of fun planned for the upcoming year and show season, and we welcome new members to our clubs and open riders to our shows. Trail ride and potluck Friday night before the show. Stalls are available for $20 one day; $30 for two days; show off trailer for $10. Camping available Friday night only for $20. Office fees: $3.00 per person. Class fees $5.00 each class; blanket fee of $40 for eight or more classes. Judge: Trevor Walton.

OPEN SHOW SERIES DATES: June 7-8, June 21-22: Weekend shows updated for 2014! All classes held in the main arena and include Cloverbud, W/T, Rail, Novice Divisions, with classes for Gaited Horses, English, Western, Gymkhana, Dressage, Saddle Seat, Hunter Hack, and Trail. Halter divisions for Stock, Fine and Gaited Model Horses, as well as a Pony Division (minis are welcome!) with Grand/Reserve Halter Champions on Saturdays. We offer many Dressage classes, including Gaited Dressage, Saddle Seat Pattern and Western Dressage. Showmanship, Equitation for all divisions, including Gymkhana. Weekend High Point Awards in W/T, Novice, Rail, Dressage, Gymkhana, Saddle Seat and Gaited Divisions. Fees: $5.00 office fee, waived with Friday night pre-registration; $5.00 per class fee or Weekend Blanket fees are available. Weekend high point $3.00 per division. Stall reservations: $20 one day; $30 2 days; $40 weekend. Tack Stalls $20 for weekend. Show off trailer one day $10 per horse; two days $15 per horse. Camping sites available for $22 per night.
