LOOMIS If there arehigh schools in the Sacra-mento area that wouldfall into the category offootball dynasty, Del Orowould certainly have to

be one of them.Established in 1959, Del

Oro helped put the smalltown of Loomis on themap. It is a magnet schoolthat attracts studentsthroughout Placer andsurrounding counties and football is no smallfactor.

With a little over 1,700students, the Division IIschool has been a con-tender for the SierraFoothill League and CIFSac-Joaquin Section titlealmost every season thelast 10 years. And now,the Golden Eagles havebranched out in the pre-season to play some ofthe top prep teams inCalifornia.

Mike Ray, a local sports-writer who has been cover-

ing Del Oro for years, reports on the Eaglesimpressive preseason

schedule and what toexpect from the black andgold this season.

In perhaps the strongestundertaking of a non-league football schedule byany school from the Sac-Joaquin Section, the Gold-en Eagles will be facing

    four big-time, high-profileopponents that combinedin 2013 for a record of 46-6.

Two of the foes, Kame-hameha of Honolulu andDe La Salle, played inrespective state champi-onship games a year agowhile the other two foes,Vista Murrietta of Coronaand Helix of La Mesa, both went deep into the

playoffs.Putting it mildly, on ascale of 1-10, the strength

of Del Oros schedule isan 11.

Heres a capsule look atDel Oros four non-leaguegrid foes for 2014:

Aug. 29 vs. Kamehameha:Doug Cosbie, a formertight end for the DallasCowboys who coached at

Sacramento High andresided in Loomis, bringsthe Warriors to Golden

Eagle Stadium to openthe 2014 campaign with afeature Honor Bowl clash.

Known in the islands asKam, the Warriors went9-2 last season with bothlosses coming at thehands of Hawaii DivisionI state champion Puna-

hou. If Del Oro followersare looking for a strengthof opponent comparison,

one of Punahous winslast year was a 10-6 defen-sive struggle over Helix ofLa Mesa.

Sept. 5 vs. Helix at Ocean-side High: In a rematch ofthe CIF State Division II2011 championship bowlgame, the Golden Eagles

will play Helix in the sec-ond week of the HonorBowl series in Oceanside.

Del Oro will be searching for a replacement for running back Dylan Kainrath (42), shown here against Elk Grove in the 2013 CIFSac-Joaquin Section Division II championship game. Kainrath gained over 2,000 yards rushing last season and scored 27 touchdowns.

A year ago, the High-landers were only 9-3,falling in the San DiegoCIF Section quarterfinals.Over the last four seasons,Helix has posted a recordof 46-6.

Sept. 13 vs. Vista Murri-eta: The Broncos, a peren-nial CIF Southern SectionInland Empire power, which went 12-2 last sea-son, comes to Loomis fora Saturday night special. In the last three years, theschool of 3,500 in Murri-eta has posted a record of

34-8.Sept. 19 vs. De La Salle:The legendary Spartans

make their first appear-ance in the Sacramentoarea since 1997 for a regu-lar season game, whenthey visit Loomis. Sayingthat De La Salle rebuildswould be wrong theSpartans just reload.

Despite losing a bevy ofsenior talent from last sea-sons 14-1 team that fell toSt. John Bosco in the OpenDivision state finals, De LaSalle returns more than30 lettermen, includingfour key players that con-tributed as sophomores.

    Regular SeasonWhen diplomas were

handed out last spring atDel Oro High School, there was no questionthat Golden Eagles foot-ball coach Casey Taylorwas saying farewell to a

talented senior class.Tyler Meteer, MichaelMoore, Emileo and EliasCampos, Dylan Kainrathand Tanner Woods werejust a few of the teams 30varsity lettermen thatplayed pivotal roles inone of the more memo-rable seasons in GoldenEagles annals.

A quick rewind to 2013showed Del Oro winning

Sierra Foothill League,Sac-Joaquin Section andCIF Northern CaliforniaRegional titles. The endresult was a record of 13-3and the programs secondappearance in a CIF StateBowl game.

Now, with the 2014 sea-son rapidly approaching, here are five big questionsfacing the black and goldas they ready for the startof drills next month.

    1. Is there anotherMichael Moore on the DelOro horizon? After get-ting minimal snaps as ajunior in 2012, Moore pro-vided the Golden Eagleswith excellent senior lead-ership throwing for 2,555yards and 29 touchdownsin 2013.

    This years heir apparent

is senior-to-be LoganHurst. A transfer from Col-fax, Hurst started at safety

as a junior, but at the quar-terback spot gives theGolden Eagles a definitepass-run threat. Two yearsago as Colfaxs starting JVquarterback, he led the

Falcons to a 8-2 season.Look for senior-to-beBen Hart and sopho-moreto-be Mason Hurst,Logans younger brother,to provide dept at theposition.

    2. Can anyone replaceDylan Kainrath? Beinghonest, you dont replacea Dylan Kainrath.

Last season, Kainrathwas a dominating force

for the Golden Eagles ashe had a Bryce Pratt-Brandon Monroe typeseason with 2,089 rushingyards and 27 touchdowns.

This season, Taylor hasprobably more of a run-by-committee look led byjuniors Dominic Pericin,Christian Guerrero andAndrew Smith. The trioplayed big roles in help-

ing Del Oros JVs go 10-0last season.

3.Who emerges to takethe pressure off Trey Udof-fia? Thats a good ques-tion. Coming into this sea-

son, no other returningDel Oro player has caughtmore than one passin their career. Udoffiaemerged last season as asophomore as a big-timethreat with 32 catches for570 yards and nine touch-downs. Still, Taylor looks tohave multiple pass catch-ing threats in sopho-mores-to-be Mason Hurstand Dalton Gee and tight

ends Jake Nolen and RayThomas, yet anothersophomore-to-be.

    4. How does the defenserebuild? After losingnine starters and addedsenior depth on thedefensive side of the ball, the Golden Eagles willdefinitely have a new lookthis season. Safety JustinBurrage, who had 30 tack-

les and seven intercep-tions last season as asophomore, is back alongwith defensive backsUdoffia, Hart and LoganHurst. Nolen and Grant

Meteer should also be inthe mix. Size up front willcome from Daniel Grimesand Roddy Hamilton. For-mer assistant coach BillSherman, who was RiverValleys head coach lastseason, returns as theGolden Eagles assistantdefensive coordinator.

    5. Can the GoldenEagles survive a meatgrinder of a preseason

schedule? There isntany question that DelOros 2014 non-leagueslate of games is hella-cious to say the least.Going 2-2 in those fourgames with a youngsquad would be a tremen-dous accomplishmentand prepare the Eaglesfor the rigors of SierraFoothill League wars.

Speed will be the keyBY JIM LINSDAU

    SPORTS EDITOR

Some will rememberthe Lincoln High football2009 season, when thenhead coach Ken Lowetook the Fighting Zebrasfrom a 1-9 season in 08 toa Pioneer Valley Leaguechampionship and the

No. 1 seed in the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section DivisionIV playoffs.

But that was then andthis is now.

Lowe stepped downafter the 2013 season andin walked someone new.Its always a situation ofmixed emotions when apopular coach stepsdown and a new erabegins.

I cant tell you howexcited I am. I cant stopgrinning, said CoachChris Bean, who comes toLincoln from the BearRiver program. This is anexciting time for me andmy staff and hopefully forthe city of Lincoln, as welland the high school.

Although this is Beansfirst head coaching job at

the varsity level, he is nonewcomer to varsity foot-

ball or the PVL. Hecoached on the varsitylevel before taking overthe Bruins junior varsityprogram several years

    ago.Although acknowledg-

ing he will stand in theshadows of coaches likeTony Martello (Colfax),Joey Montoya (Placer)and Scott Savoie and Ter-

ry Logue of Bear River, inthe last four years, Beans

JV Bruins compiled arecord of 35-4-1 and lostonly one game in the PVL.

Our philosophy ofcoaching is the fact that

we build men of charac-ter; thats our whole goal,

Bean said. We get toknow these kids on a per-sonal level. We cant bejust about football. We tryto mold these kids withthe help of their parents, with the help of theirteachers, with the help ofthe community intobeing men of character.

Character went a longway Saturday, when the

Zebras played host to twopowerhouse programs,

Antelope and Rocklin, in apreseason scrimmage.Although it was a bit ofDavid vs. Goliath for themost part, Lincoln provedthey had more in theirarsenal than a slingshot.

In spite of expectedmistakes, the offense fol-lowed the game planbehind quarterback EliGarcia, who was pretty

well protected on passplays by an untested line

    led by all-league centerLuke Suchomel.

Another all-league play-er, running back DaneStimbert displayed thepower with which he runs, complemented by thespeed of Eli Cunningham a Rocklin transfer.

None of us are afraid tohit, said the 160-poundrunning back/strong safe-ty. Were going to comeout playing like any otherteam in league, thebiggest team or the small-est team.

Bean was quick to pointout how well his defense

played during the scrim-mage. He said the offensehas got a lot to learn andtherefore would take moretime to develop, but thedefense appeared ready togo.

Our defense played, overall there were littlethings here and there, butman, they did not backdown to any of thoseguys, Bean said. They

know what we want, butto see it on every singleplay is something they arestruggling with.

Bean pointed out thatone of the big hits deliv-ered by junior Jeffry Joneswas what the coacheswant to see consistentlyon defense.

Defensive coordinatorJack Hickey, who has been

with Bean the last sixyears, said the coaching

staff knows what they willbe coming up against inthe Pioneer Valley League.

He said coaches like Col-faxs Tony Martello andPlacers Joey Montoyawould present gameplans that would be con-sistently difficult to figureout.

We know what weregoing up against and itsgoing to be rough, but itsgoing to be fun, saidHickey who, along with

Bean, was coached byMartello when the two

were at Colfax together. Were going to have funtrying to scheme against

our old coach and schem-ing against those guys.

Colfax Lincoln willopen league play againstColfax at home Oct. 10.The Falcons used a strongaerial attack on the arm ofMichael Wilson and therunning of Tim Rawlins todefeat the Zebras 49-35last season. Wilson isgone, but Rawlins will be

    back.Key will be the Colfax

defense, which lost a lot oftalent through gradua-tion.

Center The Zebras gal-lop off to Antelope to playthe Cougars Oct. 17, co-champions of the PVL lastseason. However, Centerschances of repeating arenot good.

Quarterback TyrellAnderson, Centers topgun has departed, alongwith leading rusher JoeSwen. Tobias Marshall willbe called upon to fill in for

Swen, but it wont be easyfor the incoming junior.

Many of the Catsdefenders have departed,as well.

Foothill The Mustangshave been hobbled on thegridiron as of late andcould prove a hospitablehost for Lincoln Oct. 24.The Zebras ran roughshodover the orange and black

last season, 43-10.Placer The fun begins

Halloween night when2013 co-champion andpreseason favorite Placer

comes to town, Oct. 31.The Hillmen saw a lot oftalent leave the stagewearing green mortar-boards last spring, but noless than eight returneesare expected to return asall-PVL candidates.

Still, look for the Zebrasto give Placer one heck ofa scare on All Hallows Eve.

Bear River In the sea-son finale, Bean and

company will head intosome familiar territoryNov. 7. He and the Zebraswill be facing a lot of play-ers wearing Beans brand.

The Bruins should havea strong offensive lineand a solid defense, and akeen understanding ofCoach Bean football.

Following the scrim-mage, Bean talked about

the nuances of the gameand what it was going to

take for his players to beready for the PVL.

    Youve got to be smart

to play in this offense. Wehave line calls every sin-gle play, Bean said, as towhy his offensive linewould get on the ball wellbefore the backs andreceivers broke huddle. Were saving these bigboys back and forth, backand forth. It may notseem like a lot, but overtime they are ready to goand they are able to sit

there and talk before theplay comes in.

Lincolns biggestAchilles heel could besimply learning the sys-tem in 2014. Coach Beanhas brought a lot ofchanges, but he seems toalready have the full trustof his players.

The Zebras may get offto a slow start, but look

for an all out stampede atthe finish.

    BY JIM LINSDAU

    SPORTS EDITOR

After Whitney HighSchool opened itsdoors for the first

time, it took the footballprogram just one year towind up as co-champions

of the Pioneer ValleyLeague. In 2008, the Wild-cats took it one step fur-ther and won the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section DivisionIV championship.

In 2010, Whitney movedto the Capital AthleticLeague, where they fin-ished in second placebehind Antelope. A yearlater, the Cats returnedthe favor by defeating the

Titans for the CAL crown, but also had to contend asa Division III school in theplayoffs.

The Rocklin school hassince moved up to Divi-sion II and now findthemselves in the CapitalValley Conference.

In the four years theWildcats were in the CAL,they were twice leaguechampions and runners-up twice to Antelope. TheTitans have also moved

over the CVC, but dontexpect the new league tobe as accommodating asthe CAL.

(The CVC is) much bet-ter competition, Whitneyhead coach Gimenez saidin describing the leaguechange to sportswriterJeremy McDonald dur-ing spring conditioning.Theyre very tough, very

well-coached teams.Along with CAL rivalAntelope, the Wildcats willplay Bella Vista, Del Cam-po, Ponderosa, Oakmont,Roseville and CosumnesOaks. Oakmonts Vikingsdefeated the Cats lastyear and the Cougars ofDel Campo knocked themaroon and gold out ofthe playoffs in 2012.

    The conference sleeper

could be Roseville, a long-time veteran of one of theareas toughest leagues the Sierra Foothill League.

The (Sierra FoothillLeague) was a lot more dif-ficult than the CAL, saidWhitneys emerging rightguard Kevin Coulter, whoplayed his freshman yearat Rocklin High, but com-petition is competitionand you just have to playyour heart out every singlegame; it doesnt matter

    who youre playing.Whitney graduated 25

seniors this spring, butteam rebuilding followingthe departure of seniors isnothing new. A number ofexperienced juniors willstep into leadership roles, including 6-foot, 4-inchfree safety and widereceiver Daniel Jones, cor-nerback Nathan Appleby

    and 6-2, 200-pound line-man Casey Powell.Stepping in under center

will be either HunterRodrigues or Jashon Lewis, both are juniors.

Rodrigues is theyounger brother of 2011CAL Offensive Player ofthe Year Jake Rodrigues, now at San Diego State.

Lewis was also a mem-ber of the Wildcats varsity

    basketball team as asophomore.

In spite of players likeCoulter and centerZachary Sclater, who bothpush the scales over 250pounds, Whitney will notbe noted for its size thisseason; however, Gimenezsaid it could prove to beone of his fastest.

I think were under-sized and we will have torely on our speed and oursmarts, said defensive

coordinator and defen-sive-backs coach MarcRubalcaba. We will haveto rely on a few seniorathletes to lead us and askour youth to step up andcontribute. We have tohave a collective effortfrom everyone.

Depth should not be aproblem for the Cats thisseason, as they will carry

22 seniors this year on a50-man roster.Among those seniors is

Joe Roberts. Carrying 180pounds last season, therunning back packs a wal-lop and should give theWildcats good short-yardage power up themiddle. He will get sup-port from junior runningbacks Jared Wilson andMalachi Turner.

Gimenez will look toseniors Kyle Carr and IanHiggins to pick up theslack at the linebackerpositions.

We have a lot toimprove upon, saidGimenez, following theannual maroon and goldscrimmage a coupleweeks ago, but I thinkoverall, defense is flying tothe ball very well; we hadgood tacklers.

    Offensively, there are

some good things; passing, passblocking was really good.

Whitney will definitely not belooking to beat up on a patsy toopen the season. The Cats willplay host to state-ranked OakRidge to try and sharpen theirskills.

About the only weakness theTrojans showed last year weretwo losses to Folsom the No. 3ranked team in the state thisseason. The Bulldogs were run-ners-up in the 2013 Open Divi-sion State Championship.

Oak Ridge did lose 30 seniorsoff last years roster, but 37 play-ers could return, including jun-ior quarterback Ian Book. As asophomore, Book threw formore than 2,500 yards and 30touchdowns and was picked offonly five times.

If Book has a weakness, itcould be in running with the

ball. Still, he has three returningrunning backs that gainednearly 1,400 yards betweenthem.

    After Oak Ridge, comes Divi-

sion IV state champion Enter-prise in Redding and then on tothe Quarry Bowl against Rock-lin. The Quarry Bowl will be inThunder Stadium Sept. 12,where the Wildcats have yet towin.

Whitney will then take a weekoff to prepare for CVC play.

Bella Vista comes to WildcatStadium Sept. 26 to begin therace for the conference crown. The Broncos won only twogames last season and hasnthad a winning season since2009.

Oct. 3, Del Campo is next inline; the Cougars struggled lastyear, as well.

In the Cougars favor, theylost by just seven to Antelopeand were never shut out. How-ever, Del Campo surrenderedalmost 32 points a game.

    Whitneys first conference

road game will be at PonderosaOct. 10. Like the Cats, the Bru-ins are new to the CVC.

Playing last season in theDelta River League, Pondo was

4-1 in preseason, but going upagainst the likes of Folsom andOak Ridge, did not win a singlegame in league.

Oakmont visits Whitney Oct.17. The Vikes tripped up theWildcats last season 27-21 on alast-second touchdown pass, but then the bottom droppedout as Oakmont won only onemore game after that.

The Cats will have to face thetop of the CVC order in the finalthree weeks of the season, beginning Oct. 24 at Roseville.Next, its on the road againagainst Cosumnes Oaks Oct. 31,winners of the Sierra ValleyConference last year.

However, the Wildcats rockedthe Wolfpack in the 2013 play-offs 34-9.

Then, in a familiar finale,Antelope will invade WildcatStadium; a game perhaps carry-

ing both championship andplayoff implications. For more great information

on Whitney and to follow theWildcats go to www.wctv19.com.

    League expansion welcomedBY JIM LINSDAU

    SPORTS EDITOR

As if the Sierra FoothillLeague wasnt tough enough, the CIF Sac-Joaquin Sectiondecided to realign the confer-ence by adding Oak Ride andFolsom.

That might not sound like abig deal, unless one is associat-

ed with an SFL football pro-gram.Folsom and Oak Ridge are

ranked in the top 20 in the stateof California, with the Bulldogstabbed as No. 3. That is a bigdeal; especially considering theSFL also includes another top-20 team, Del Oro and 2012 Divi-sion I State Bowl championGranite Bay.

Because of the status of theseven teams in the SFL, it was

originally suggested the leaguestop four teams qualify for theplayoffs. After all, Rocklin andDel Oro are Division II teams. But it appears that will not bethe case.

Still, the Thunder is not allthat concerned with the addi-tion of two of the states presea-son favorites.

For Rocklin High School, 2009CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Divi-sion II champions, the additionof the Trojans and Bulldogs onlychanges the hype, not the foot-ball. This, despite the fact Fol-som and Oak Ridge met for thesection Division I title last sea-son, won by the Dogs.

It doesnt matter who weplay. We have a level of Rocklinfootball that were going to playevery week, said Rocklin headcoach Greg Benzel as to theleague expansion. It definitely

brings a sense of pride, a senseof accomplishment of knowingthat, hey, this arguably could bethe best league in the state, which means were amongst the

    best.Benzel said senior Max

ORouke would take over atquarterback, after playingbehind Logan Webb in 2013.ORouke led the 2012 juniorvarsity squad to a 9-0-1 recordas the JV signal caller.

Benzel said ORouke has agood understanding of somehigh-level concepts that thecoaching staff if excited about. He said ORoukes leadershipnot only includes guiding team-mates, but motivating them to a

higher level, as well.Max ORouke has earnedthat spot for a variety of rea-sons, said Benzel. He does anice job of challenging guys.

Hes truly a coach on the field.All-league running back Evyn

Holtz looked as strong as ever inscrimmage, but also playedlinebacker along with runningback Riley Clark. Benzel said, because it is so difficult for aplayer to go both ways in highschool football, he may have tooperate his backfield by com-mittee.

Renowned for its defense,Rocklin also appeared solid, inspite of having to fill so manypositions vacated by last years

seniors. The great think about our Dis you can see when Rocklincomes to play were all runningto the ball, said Benzel. A guy

gets hit and the next secondtheres another guy there. Ithought like we showed a verystrong presence on D.

Few people know the Thun-der defense like defensive coor-dinator Jason Adams. Adamssaid the expansion of the SFLwould not change what hasworked for him the past 13years.

To say that we will do thingsdifferently, I would say, no, saidAdams during conditioningdrills earlier this summer.

Were going to do things exact-ly the way we always have, andthats to try and find as manyquality opponents as we canwithin 10 games.

For a team that gave up just ashade more than two touch-downs per game in 11 contestslast season, why would theBolts want to change anything?

No team scored more than 28points on the Thunder in 2013.In a preseason scrimmageagainst Folsom, Rocklin gave upa couple early scores, but thenslammed the door on the doghouse.

Oak Ridge slipped by theThunder 23-21 last season inTroy and Del Oro escaped 14-13

in the SFL championship.Senior linebacker DustinHowenstein said he started sixgames as a junior last season, but was then beaten out by a

senior who went on tomake all league. Howen-stein said that was justindicative of how high the

    level of competition is atRocklin.

Were not the biggest,meanest-looking dudes, but were definitely thesmartest and definitelythe quickest and fastest,Howenstein said. Webeat other teams by ourspeed and our quicknessand our brains. We findour way to the ball andjust make it happen.

    Adams said the biggest

improvement he has seenthis season would be inthe performance of thelinemen on both sides of

the ball. He said the talentand depth is some of thebest he has seen in awhile.

Among them is return-ing lineman Matt Tyler.Tyler, at 6-foot, 233-pounds, is pleased to seethe league expand andfeels it will help give play-ers greater opportunity.

I like it a lot. I think itsa lot better competitionand a lot more exposure

to bigger scouts, said theformer offensive guardwho plays at center andon defense. Whoever

wins (league), you knowtheyve earned it becauseits one of the toughestleagues in California.

Coach Adams said histime in the SFL hastaught him what toexpect from other teams. He said Casey Taylor atDel Oro will bring bothtalent and a team thatphysically grinds onopponents.

    He said Granite Bays

Ernie Cooper will build aphysical team able toattack from disguised for-mations and multiple

sets. Adams also had highpraise for Oak Ridge andFolsom, in spite of thisbeing their first year in theSFL.

Make no bones aboutit, Folsom is a physicalfootball team, saidAdams, downplaying theperception the Bulldogsare all about the pass andfinesse. There is nothingfinesse about what theydo. They are physical and

will come at you at theline of scrimmage, andwill attack you on the

perimeter with strong, physical athletes and areally good scheme.

Regardless of how thatplays out, Rocklin footballis as good as ever and the2014 season will likelyprove to be no exception. Its been said offense winsgames and defense winschampionships. If that isthe case, the Thundershould be right in themiddle of the mix.

Were really proud ofwhat were doing here. Our program and our kids

are proud to represent thecommunity of Rocklinand to make it a real posi-tive place to be, saidCoach Adams. And it is;Rocklin is a special place.

And indeed, Rocklincould find itself in a spe-cial place come the end ofthe season. That was thesentiment of the playersat Lincolns scrimmageand attitude can go a longway in football.

PHOTOS BY JIM LINSDAU SPORTS EDITOR

In typical fashion, the Rocklin Thunder defense swarms to the ball as an Antelope runner breaks to theoutside. Rocklin has worked hard to replace some key defensive players from last season following grad-uation.

Rocklin High head coach Greg Benzel (left) discuss-es strategy with quarterback Max ORourke duringlast Saturdays scrimmage at Lincoln High School.ORourke played behind senior Logan Webb lastseason and appeared totally at ease behind center.
