Add to your reading of Ecclesiastes this July Solomon’s third book, the Song of Solomon. This is a poem about a romantic, intoxicating love. (Maybe this is your “beach reading” and Ecclesiastes is your “back-to-work reading.”) The language in the book is filled with emotional rather than visual descriptions of the lovers. For instance, when Scripture says, “your hair is like a flock of goats” it is better to ask, “What are the lovers feeling?” rather than, “What does this look like?” All in all, it is a different kind of study, but each Sunday, we will unpack what we’ve read and explore the rich lessons there. Enjoy the long days-- See you Sunday.

The Shepherd’s Watch

This summer, our worship series centers on King Solomon. After Solomon inherited the monarchy of Israel from his father David, he began the hard task of leading. As Solomon began his work, he quickly realized that he could not carry the weight of nation alone, so he began to worship and pray.

His first prayer was not for wealth or power, but for wisdom and a discerning heart.

Solomon’s writings reflect a life-time of thinking about wisdom and of God’s place in our search for wisdom. If you haven’t read the book of Proverbs, I hope in the month of July, you will read one chapter a day as part of your own journey in seeking wisdom.

If you did take the June challenge to read through the book of Proverbs, I have a new assignment. In July, read the book of Ecclesiastes.

Ecclesiastes is a departure from the Proverbs in that it is a rather melancholy look at Solomon’s struggle with despair in his search for meaning. He is at the end of his life, having become rich and powerful, but he has lost his way. Solomon now looks at all he has accomplished and pronounces it “meaningless.”

As Christians, we fast-forward to Jesus’ warning in the Gospels. “For what will it profit them if they gain the whole world but forfeit their life.” In the midst of this melancholy, we find hope however, and this is the jewel of the book.

For instance, when Scripture says, “your hair is like a flock of goats” it is better to ask, “What are the lovers feeling?” rather than, “What does this look like?”

All in all, it is a different kind of study, but each Sunday, we will unpack what we’ve read and explore the rich lessons there.

Enjoy the long days--See you Sunday.

2 Shepherd of the Hills Presbyterian Church

There is perhaps no better joy for Shepherd of the Hills as a family of faith than seeing families growing closer through fellowship in the church. We have a terrific opportunity for SHPC families and friends to do exactly that over Labor Day.

SHPC’s Family Camp will take place Saturday, August 30th through Monday, September 1st, and we’ll share meals, activities and play/relaxation time together from Saturday lunch through Monday breakfast.

The weekend will be a fun-filled mix of friends, food, worship, games, playing in the Guadalupe and swimming in the pool. Whether you want to play hard or

just relax, this weekend is for you!

We’ll be staying at the newly renovated Camp Capers in Comfort, TX. You have two options for accommodations at the camp, Lodge Room or Cabin.

Lodge Rooms:

Lodge rooms are hotel-style with two queen-sized beds and a private bathroom, and your linens are provided.

The lodge room rate is $170 per adult and $60 per child under 18 (or still in high school). Because the child rate essentially just covers the cost of meals, the lodge room rate is based on 2 adult campers in each room. We will not be able to make

exceptions on the lodge room rate.

Cabins:

Cabins have twin sized bunk beds and can sleep 12 people in each cabin with shared bathrooms. Campers must bring their own linens when staying in cabins.

The cabin rate is $100 per adult and $60 per child under 18 (or still in high school). We must have a minimum of 4 people in each cabin, and cabins that house more than 6 people will have a discounted adult rate of $90.

We truly hope all of our families consider kicking off fall with this time together to relax, play and worship!

MISSIONWelcome Refugee Family!

The refuge family from Sudan arrived! It was a great experience to greet them at the airport and bring them to their new home. They were tired, happy and relieved after flying from Cairo to Miami to Houston and to Austin, all within two days.

In preparation, we had a crew who moved donated goods to the family’s apartment, set the apartment up, grocery-shopped, and made sure everything was homey and welcoming.

After the family arrived, we transported them to

appointments, helped them navigate the Capital Metro system, and took them to the Austin World Refugee Day celebration.

Thank you everyone who donated furniture, household goods, clothes, gift cards, toys and your time! We are all set with donated items!

To meet this family and help with transportation during the week and fun things during the weekends, please call Cathy Beard, 512-589-5634. There will be a couple of opportunities a week for the next few weeks.

Robin Simmonds, Matthew Cabello, and Julianna Cabello did a fantastic job of helping to make this apartment a welcoming home for the refugee family.

Getting Ready: Back to School Time at Manos de Cristo! You can support this annual

event with both time and treasure: there are many opportunities to volunteer during the 3 week event (July 28 – August 15) & just $30 will sponsor a child to prepare for school.

Glenn Dukes has blocked 35 spots for SHPC for those that can join to distribute school supplies and clothing on August 13th from 8am to 12pm. This is a great way for youth to serve as well as adults! We’re using VolunteerSpot to organize this group event.

HOLY SMOKES! Our BBQ was a Huge Success! The annual Holy Smokes BBQ was, once again, a

wonderful event with fantastic food and awesome fellowship at the new Brodie Campus Deck. This year, the Manchaca Fire Department joined us to judge the BBQ, then they gave kids a tour of the fire trucks afterward.

We even had a dedicated group who “camped out” overnight to smoke some of those awesome meats we all enjoyed at the event.

A very big “thank you” goes out to the fellowship committee and all those who helped cook, serve, prep the building and grounds, set up and clean up. We wouldn’t be able to put on events like this without you, and we are very grateful for all you did to make the Holy Smokes BBQ such a huge success!

ADULT MINISTRYADULT MINISTRY

Piece on Earth QuiltersIt has been so much fun to be a part of this group! As we have been working to develop our skills, the

fellowship has created friendships and quilts. We only have four more Saturdays in this calendar year before we call it a ‘wrap’. In October we will turn over

our handmade gifts of love to the SHPC Prime Timers to put into their Christmas boxes. We would like for you to join us at the Valli and Kim Quilt Store in Dripping Springs on Saturday, July 26th from

10 a.m. to 3 p.m.. We will have a ‘mini-quilt’ show of the finished pieces, so please drop in to view our progress and to lend us support and encouragement. For directions go to the web site: www.valliandkim.com or for more information about this group contact Dee Merrell: [email protected] or 512-829-4352.

BINGO & BOOK SWAP Sunday, July 6th, after the 11:00 service, we will

enjoy playing Bingo while eating lunch in the William Cannon FMC. Bring a vegetable, salad, or dessert (or all three!), and we will provide brisket. We will also have a book swap.

We will be taking reservations to determine how much brisket to order, but reservations are not required. So come join the fun!

POSSIBLE NEW CLASSES!We have had some requests for an evening Jesus in

the Gospels class and also an evening Disciple 2 class. With enough interest, these would probably be scheduled Mondays from 7:00 to 9:00 at the Wm. Cannon campus.

Please contact Sherry Smith at [email protected] if you are interested in these or any other Disciple classes or times.

Fellowship Lunch BunchThe PrimeTime Lunch Bunch will meet at Schmidt's

BBQ in Bee Caves on Saturday, July 19th at ll:30 am. For reservations contact Jeanette or Gordon Box at 512-280-7751 or by email at [email protected] or [email protected]. Let Jeanette or Gordon know if you need a ride.
