Call for Workshops 2014 HBA Annual Conference

November 12‐14, 2014 in Chicago

WORKSHOP SUBMISSION DEADLINE Monday, January 13, 2014 by 5:00 PM EST The Healthcare Businesswomen’s Association (HBA) is accepting Request for Information submissions for the 2014 Annual Conference to be held in Chicago from November 12-14, 2014. Since 1999, the HBA’s annual conference has attracted thousands of professionals from all sectors of the healthcare industry. Each year, HBA members and non-members at all stages of their careers come together to learn and enhance vital skills, share insights and further develop key leadership competencies. Featuring inspiring keynote presentations by national thought leaders, a rich choice of interactive workshops and dedicated time to meet and connect with industry peers and leaders, the HBA Annual Conference delivers career-changing experiences.

TWO‐STEP PROCESS To make the workshop submission process easier and more efficient for potential presenters and reviewers, only basic information is required at first. Submissions that best meet the selection criteria (described later in this document) will move to the next step, where more detailed information is provided.

Step 1: Request for Information (RFI) • Review the entire contents of this booklet before submitting an RFI. • RFI submission questions can be found in a form at the end of this booklet. Do NOT fill out this form—it is

provided so all questions can be viewed prior to preparing an RFI. All RFIs must be submitted electronically via the link provided below.

• Link for RFI submission: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/2014HBAAnnualConferenceRFI. Click on or copy and paste this link into your browser to access the RFI. When all information has been entered, click “Done.”

• The deadline for RFI submission is 5:00 PM EST on Monday, January 13, 2014. • If you do not receive an e-mail confirming RFI receipt within three business days, please assume that your

submission was not received and contact Liz Stueck, Director of Education, Healthcare Businesswomen’s Association at 973-575-0606 ext. 710 or [email protected]. For e-mail, please put “Annual Conference Inquiry” in the subject line.

• HBA will review and acknowledge all RFIs; if additional information is needed, the primary presenter will be contacted.

Step 2: Request for Proposal (RFP) • RFIs that best meet the selection criteria move to the next step, where an invitation to submit a more detailed

RFP is extended to the primary presenter. • RFP invitations will be issued in early/mid February. Those invited to submit an RFP will have approximately

two weeks to do so, with RFPs due in mid/late February. (The exact date will be provided to RFP recipients.)

What does success look like? In the words of past attendees: My participation in the HBA Annual Conference was worthwhile because I... • learned new skills/strategies to increase my professional effectiveness • refreshed my knowledge of key industry changes and their implications • discovered new perspectives about myself and others • made new connections and expanded my leadership network • renewed my outlook and increased my ability to see new possibilities • rekindled my passion for becoming a better leader

Who may propose a workshop? HBA members and nonmembers may submit an RFI, so feel free to share this application within your network.

May an individual submit more than one RFI? Yes, but it is preferable to submit one fully developed RFI rather than multiple less fully developed submissions. Presenters should submit in areas in which they have deep knowledge and practical expertise.

What is the expected attendance for the 2014 Annual Conference in Chicago? 750 or more. The 2013 conference sold out early, with more than 900 registrants.

Requirements 1. Comply with all HBA policies. 2. Work within HBA timelines. 3. Complete and submit the RFI and, if selected, the RFP by the deadlines provided; incomplete applications will

not be considered. 4. Indicate availability to present your workshop on Thursday, November 13 and Friday, November 14, 2014. 5. If your workshop is selected: Sign the HBA speaker agreement (provided to those offered a workshop slot) that offers attestation that

workshop content has been developed and owned by the submitter and does not infringe upon any copyright or intellectual property rights of others. No workshop will offered without receipt of a signed speaker agreement.

Submit presentation slides and handout materials by the date requested for review by the Annual Conference Content Committee.

Provide hard copies of slides and any other handout materials for all attendees at the beginning of the workshop. HBA may post electronic copies of slide handouts and other materials via the conference app.

6. Applicants accept that decisions of the HBA are final and will be based on the outlined criteria, proposed content and scheduling considerations.

Understandings • Presenters are not compensated for conducting workshops. • Presenters are responsible for their travel and lodging costs (presenters are invited to all meals provided as

part of their conference registration; other meal costs are not included). • The primary presenter (workshop leader) for each workshop will receive a free conference registration; all

other presenters/panelists in that workshop must pay for their conference registration (special rate provided). The primary presenter is responsible for communicating this to all other presenters/panelists in their workshop.

Confidentiality, to the extent possible, will be maintained in the review process, and submissions shall not be used for any purpose other than evaluation of merit. Final selection of workshops will be solely at the discretion of the HBA and based on what the organization determines to be the best fit for the conference and its attendees.

A❶ BUSINESS MODEL TRANSFORMATION: The Role of Innovation Presenter: Shideh Sedgh Bina, founding partner, Insigniam Co-Presenter: Greg Trueblood, consultant, Insigniam Objectives: • Recognize key business model types and elements • Apply a tool to initiate business model innovation • Identify business model innovations that you can take back to your workplace The challenge of creating new product innovation is great, but greater still is the challenge of innovating how business generates value. In this session, the presenters will share a framework that takes the mystery out of how business models work so you can innovate the way you do business, regardless of organizational type. Identify your existing business model and learn about common business model types, including examples from other industries. Then explore business model innovation, including both product-based innovation as well as the less traditional systems and process innovation, which can bring attention to new or overlooked possibilities. Using a business model map and a “one-element-at-a-time” approach, you will assess how changing one component of your current model can generate new value for new customers. By the conclusion of this workshop, you will identify business model innovations that you can take back to your workplace. About the workshop leader: Insigniam founding partner Shideh Bina has more than 25 years of experience in consulting, business development and management globally with large, complex organizations. An expert in change management and corporate transformations, she applies her unique skill to develop leaders and improve business operations. Website: www.insigniam.com.

“Leaders have to be agile and quick to adapt to new market situations, opportunities, and risks.

This session offers a way to enhance one's ability to make bold changes to a business model and how to engage and execute on it.”

A❷ IT TAKES TWO TO TANGO: Cultivating Successful Client-Vendor Relationships Presenter: Jaime Marks Corvino, manager, marketing materials and reporting, Novo Nordisk Co-Presenters: • Tanya Hill, vice president, hemophilia marketing, Novo Nordisk • Amy Hansen, senior vice president, group creative director, CDM • Amy Cheung, principal, Deloitte Consulting • Ivan Walrath, trial master file process owner, Pfizer Inc Objectives: • Identify causes of common obstacles faced in client-vendor relationships • Apply strategies to proactively address and overcome obstacles in both new and existing client-vendor

relationships • Discuss best practices to optimize client-vendor relationships The use of external vendors (eg, consultants, agencies) is a common practice and a fundamental part of doing business. Less common is the recognition that successful client-vendor relationships require time and work by both parties: it takes two to tango. As with personal relationships, the client-vendor relationship goes through stages that depend upon mutual communication and trust: courting (proposals and sales presentations), engagement (statements of work and contracts), marriage (conducting business) and break-up (ending projects). The ability to effectively engage, manage and motivate external partners and clients is an essential skill, yet there is little training on how to cultivate and sustain these relationships. In this workshop, you will explore both sides of the client-vendor relationship and identify strategies to optimize these business interactions. Successful client-vendor pairs will share their experiences and provide practical tips for building and strengthening client-vendor relationships. About the workshop leader: Jaime Marks Corvino has worked in the healthcare industry as both a client and a consultant. She currently is a manager of marketing operations at Novo Nordisk; prior to that, she served as a manager in PwC's pharmaceutical and life sciences consulting practice. Profile: www.linkedin.com/in/jaimemarks.

“Leadership is often thought of in terms of managing down the chain of command, but client/vendor relationships require lateral leadership and leading without authority:

leadership skills not often practiced and developed.”

A❸ THE ART AND SCIENCE OF HIRING: What Every Extraordinary Leader Needs to Know Presenter: Nancy Donohoo, partner, Grant Cooper HealthCare Co-Presenter: Ed Stout, senior client partner, Grant Cooper HealthCare Objectives: • Develop a strategic approach to identifying and hiring the best candidates for your team • Apply effective interviewing and listening skills to glean critical information needed for hiring decisions • Identify ways to manage the offer process to increase effectiveness and success Leaders know the only way to achieve and sustain success is to surround themselves with the best and brightest people. Top talent represents the most important competitive advantage across all industries, and the higher one goes in an organization, the more important it is to have the ability to select the right person for the job. Take your recruitment process—including your interviewing and hiring skills—to a whole new level in this fun and interactive workshop. Learn how to glean the information you need from interviews and reference checks, gain a more comprehensive and balanced view of candidates, ask better questions and manage the offer process with greater effectiveness. Both seasoned hiring executives and new managers will walk away with practical insights and tools to improve accuracy in recruiting, interviewing and closing the best candidates for any job. About the workshop leader: Nancy Donohoo is partner at Grant Cooper HealthCare and has more than 16 years’ experience in executive search, placing top talent in the healthcare/life sciences industry. Prior to that, she held leadership roles at United Healthcare, KV Pharmaceutical and Coventry. Nancy is a certified administrator for DDI Targeted Selection®, a behavioral interviewing system. Website: www.grantcooperhealthcare.com.

“We will demonstrate the importance of a scientific approach to hiring, which relies on structure, consistency and objectivity. We will also emphasize the value of the art of hiring,

which is to be aware of your intuition about a candidate, using your emotional intelligence and other ‘soft’ skills.”

This workshop provides a systematic approach for developing a product or business plan and helps non-analytics professionals gain greater comfort in the use and application of multiple data sources. L❻ GROUP DECISION-MAKING: Using a Knowledge Plan to Move Ahead Presenter: Merle Kummer, principal, Kummer Consulting, LLC Objectives: • Use a knowledge plan to solidify information for all decision-makers • Explore group dynamics and the cognitive processes that affect individual decision-making • Design decision-making meetings where stakeholders use each others' perspectives to illuminate—

rather than disagree about—the issues Group decision-making can be endlessly frustrating. Often, responsibilities are unclear, data are cloudy, time is short and tempers shorter. This workshop uses an actual case from pharma to examine the group dynamics involved in decision making and to apply insights from cognitive science on how individuals make decisions in situations of uncertainty and incomplete data. Employing a straightforward, intuitive process to generate knowledge for decisions, you will learn who must be included to make a decision that will stick, what information each stakeholder will find compelling and how to create settings where team members’ experiences are used to illuminate—rather than disagree about—the issues. While most decision-management tools ignore the way humans naturally think and interact, the tool used in this session capitalizes on available expertise, asking team members to face all the facts together, approach the data from multiple perspectives and generate shared conclusions. About the workshop leader: Merle Kummer is a pioneer in the field of leading cross-disciplinary teams. She designs and manages learning programs for life science organizations facing complex, unprecedented challenges, coaches executives on leadership development and consults on organizational effectiveness and decision-making in research and development, project management, IT, and other technical disciplines. She is principal, Kummer Consulting, LLC. Website: www.kummerconsulting.com.

“In school we’re taught to value scientific fact over artistic intuition but in reality our brains are smarter than that.

Research shows that our quick impressions and our slower deliberations continuously inform one another as we make decisions. Experience shows that groups

who articulate and reflect on one another’s’ thinking make the soundest decisions. This workshop offers a way to make a data-driven group decision

that draws on the rich knowledge of every stakeholder.”

L❾ LEADING CHANGE IN TURBULENT TIMES: Improving Organizational Agility Presenter: Malachi O’Connor, PhD, vice president, CFAR Co-Presenter: Monica Heuer, senior manager, CFAR Objectives: • Describe a method that can be used to organize and track multiple initiatives • Discuss ways to regulate the flow of multiple high-priority initiatives through an organization • Use provided tools to support the development of leadership agility We live in a time of continuous, turbulent change. To remain competitive, leaders need to develop their own personal agility—and help their organizations do likewise—so both will be poised to rapidly innovate and adapt. One key challenge: keeping multiple initiatives on track, integrated and coordinated, which requires an understanding of how to tap into organizational momentum and energy. In this interactive workshop, you will review a method for organizing multiple priorities and explore ways to regulate the flow of initiatives through an organization to avoid the consequences of change overload (burnout, attrition, diminished productivity, poor quality, decision paralysis). Use the tools provided to support development of your leadership agility, while you network with and learn from peers facing similar challenges. The focus is on developing specific skills with immediate applicability. About the workshop leader: Dr. Malachi O’Connor is a CFAR principal, co-lead of the firm’s life science group and leader of the firm’s change practice. L❿ MISTAKES, MISHAPS AND BLUNDERS: Learning from—and Leading Through—Failure Presenter: Sue Padernacht, president and lead consultant, Ncline Leadership Strategies, LLC Objectives: • Distinguish between different types and causes of failure • Recognize how beliefs about failure influence our responses to it • Identify strategies to more productively respond to, manage and learn from failure From the time we are children, most of us are taught to avoid and abhor failure. That belief system flies in the face of the reality—failure is inevitable—and fosters dysfunctional emotional reactions and political maneuvering rather than the problem-solving and decision-making processes that would better serve our organizations, our teams and ourselves. While some popular literature and blogs espouse the value of celebrating and learning from failure, they provide little guidance to address our beliefs about failure. They also offer few if any models and tools for leaders to distinguish between and strategically respond to different types of failures. This session will use case examples and literature to illustrate a diagnostic continuum model of failure—from preventable to unavoidable, from incompetent gaffes to competent experimentation, from minor infractions to disastrous results—and will explore common cognitive and emotional reactions to failure. The goal: to respond to failure with greater resilience and identify strategies to learn from and lead through failure. About the workshop leader: Sue Padernacht has 30 years of experience in executive coaching, talent strategy and change management consulting, leadership team facilitation and training. Sue is president, Ncline Leadership Strategies, LLC, serves on boards for the American Cancer Society and American Lung Association and is a teaching fellow for the Center for Global Leadership, University of California, Irvine teaching in the MBA/Health Care Executive MBA programs and Certificate for Leadership in Healthcare Transformation.
