Connecting Vehicles

Why communication in the

roads?

mobile data

(telcos are seeking WiFi

offloading solutions to

cope with 18x growth

in traffic until 2016)

continuous connectivity

(connectivity anywhere,

everytime)

connected cars

(all Internet-based

services in the cars)

WIFI and WAVE

10x cheaper than cellular (even 4G /LTE) But, traditional WiFi is not prepared for the vehicular dynamics: range and association time WAVE and IEEE 802.11p

Back 3 Years Ago

No WAVE/DSRC equipments available, or too expensive

We promise to connect 500 vehicles (by far the largest vehicular

testbed in the world)…

We developed our first prototype of WAVE /DSRC (drivers)

Pilot trials

After 5 years of R&D, we have built the largest

real-world test bed and collecting data in

Porto, Portugal.

We deployed new prototype vehicular mesh

networking devices with customers in more

than 500 vehicles (public buses, several

dozen trucks, road side units).

This is the most robust vehicular mesh network

in the world, delivering

The connectivity between the vehicles

The Quality of service and bandwidth while on

the move.

Next Steps

Expanding the Network

Other types of vehicles

Road side units around the city (expand in the central Porto)

Improve Network Functionalities

Integrating Sensor Information

Sensors in the buses

Sensors in the street

Cameras, environmental, polution

Driving and traffic efficiency
