Fontbonne University honors two with annual Founders Award

ST. LOUIS — Fontbonne University presented its annual Founders Awards Oct. 12 to two recipients recognized for their contributions to the community.

Honored this year were Sister Mary Charity Dalton, CSJ, a former teacher and administrator, and Bonnie Eckelkamp, a long-time volunteer and supporter of education.

“Our honorees truly reflect the mission of our founders, the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, and our university,” said J. Michael Pressimone, Fontbonne president. “They are both selfless, dedicated, faithful advocates of helping others in so many aspects of life. We are honored to include them in the distinguished history of previous awardees.”

Dalton, a Nazareth Living Center resident in Oakville, Mo., has been with the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet since 1950. She was a staff and faculty member at Fontbonne for 27 years teaching speech, theater, voice and dictation. She is an active volunteer working with organizations including the Fontbonne Alumni Spirituality Committee, Sacred Heart Radio, Ronald McDonald House, Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, and the Immigrant and Refugee Women’s Program since retiring from Fontbonne.

“I’m very touched that I’ve been chosen for the Founders Award,” Dalton said. “It is humbling to be recognized for living the mission of my congregation of sisters and Fontbonne University — where I’ve seen so much transition and success in making education and the lives of students reach fulfillment.”

Bonnie Eckelkamp, a native and resident of Washington, Mo., served on Fontbonne’s board of trustees for nine years and co-chaired the university’s $20 million comprehensive campaign. Eckelkamp and her husband, L.B., are the namesakes of the Eckelkamp College of Global Business and Professional Studies at Fontbonne. She also chaired a $3 million fundraising campaign for St. Francis Borgia Parish in Washington, and she has been involved with the Today and Tomorrow Educational Foundation and the Saint Louis Art Museum, where she is a member of the Friends Board.

“I was surprised when I heard I had been chosen. It’s very flattering,” Eckelkamp said. “One of the primary focuses at Fontbonne is giving to community. That’s what drew me to become a board member initially and ultimately stay involved in many other capacities. I grew up in a Catholic family where we learned the values of giving back, and Fontbonne is an incredible institution that thrives on value and virtue.”
