GRAND RAPIDS CHIRSTIAN VS

MUSKEGON S E P T E M B E R 5 T H , 2014 7 :00 P M H A C K L E Y S T A D I U M

Friday’s Opponent: Muskegon Big Reds

Coach: Shane Fairfield (5th year, 40-11).

Last Week recap: The Big Reds defeated Detroit Catholic Central

21-14

Key players: T.J. Smith (Sr., LB), Alezay Coleman (Sr., SB/DB), Jalvin Walker

(Sr., C), Caleb Washington (Sr., RB/OLB), Roland Sharp (Sr., DE), Juayne John-

son (Jr., OT), Derices Brown (Sr., OG), Joeviair Kennedy (Sr., WR/DB), Jacorey

Sullivan (So., WR), Terrion Hill-Mckay (Jr., WR), Shawn Pfenning (Sr., QB), Key-

ante Carpenter (Sr., LB), Marquis Thompson (Sr., LB).

2014 outlook: The Big Reds have a big hole to fill at quarterback with the loss of

all-stater Deshaun Thrower. Pfenning, a senior, and junior Cameron Copeland are

battling it out. Pfenning had the inside track in preseason based on varsity experi-

ence. Fairfield expects the Big Reds to spread the ball around more, especially on

the perimeter with their triple-option attack. Washington and Coleman, moved

from receiver to slot, should get plenty of touches. Kennedy is a key receiving tar-

get. The offensive line was very young in 2013 and has a year of seasoning and

added strength, so that’s a big plus. On defense, Fairfield said the Big Reds may go

to more of a 3-4 look because of team speed. “Defensively, we look fast,” Fairfield

said. “We thought about messing with it a little bit because we have so many guys

built 5-10, 180 (pounds) that are chiseled and can run,” he said. Some of the key

holdovers are Sharp at end, Smith and Washington at linebacker and Coleman as

the free safety. Smith was last year’s leading tackler. The Big Reds will be chal-

lenged out of the gate when they host Division 1 state runner-up Detroit Catholic

Central at Hackley Stadium.
