FONTYS DANCe ACADeMY
Dance Academy offers a four-year training
of a challenging and contemporary nature.
You are trained to become a Bachelor of Dance.
The main programmes are Theatre Dance
Performance and Choreography. The first one has
two branches of training: Dance Theatre / Modern
and Contemporary Urban.
Dance Academy has a unique structure. We painstakingly observe the
developments in dance, and incorporate these in our programme. For
that reason, this programme is innovative and up-to-date, without
neglecting the dance tradition. We connect the programme with the
local, national and international field of work. A field of work that is
rapidly evolving, as is the world as such.
Dance Academy provides you with a daily intensive physical dance
training, taught at a top-class level, with additional attention to the
growth of a strong creative performer.
During auditions we observe the candidate’s own individual potential
to develop into a strong, innovative performer or choreographer. We
are always on the outlook for candidates with a powerful presence
and character, who are open-minded, and who take an interest in
research. A solid base in technical training is mandatory.
Dance Academy offers the opportunity to connect dance with other
disciplines. Disciplines such as circus, theatre, music, architecture and
visual arts. These can all be found within Fontys School of Fine and
Performing Arts.
MISSION
Our mission is to prepare students for a professional and inter-
national career as a theatre dance performer or choreographer.
These careers can extend to many fields of activity.
Dance Academy is a laboratory of the future. We take part in the
growth and enrichment of the contemporary dance. This concerns
the dance as an autonomous form of art, and dance as a physical
expression vis-à-vis the environment.
Dance Academy graduates are intelligent and contemplative
performers who are well-aware of the fact that they work for and
with an audience. It is our mission to educate the craftsmanship of
dance, and to endow a broad, cultural and philosophical knowledge.
The graduates are independent entrepreneurs in the artistic and
economic sense of the word. They have the ability to research with
(self-) reflection, and they are internationally oriented. The students
are trained as creative partners, they are capable of delivering a
complete creative contribution to the choreographic process. They
have a powerful presence, a strong physical self-awareness and
knowledge, and control of the professional practice.
Dance Academy supports the motto of Fontys School of Fine and
Performing Arts. Art, imagination and creativity are important
tools to research all what ‘is’ and what ‘is not’. All what ‘is’ can be
different and all what ‘is not’ can become feasible.
IMPLeMeNTATION
Dance Academy offers an ideal atmosphere of training with modern, well-equipped dance studios.
Dance Academy has a professional and international team of teachers and guest teachers, the majority of whom takes an active part in the professional field of work.
Every year, our students are working towards performances with guest choreographers from the international field of work.
Dance Academy offers an excellent programme which covers all objectives mentioned.
Dance Academy has a substantial international network. We use this to increase knowledge, practical experience and connections.
Throughout their careers, Dance Academy keeps track of its graduates through an alumni association. Successful performers and choreographers from Dance Academy are asked to contribute to the training programme.
INTeRNATIONAL
Dance is an international language that does not stop at borders.
Dance Academy invites students from abroad to train here. We
organize auditions in several countries. We also stimulate our
students to participate in modules in foreign countries. Dance
Academy provides English speaking education.
Dance Academy has a wide international network of
dance schools, theatres, festivals, dance companies and
choreo-graphers. Among them are iconic names, the
likes of Les Ballets C. de la B., Eastman/Sidi Larbi
Cherkaoui, Akram Kahn, T.R.A.S.H., United C,
Kissmoves, Ish, just to name a few.
And festivals such as Summer Dance
Forever and House Dance Forever
in Amsterdam, and Deltebre
Dansa in Spain.
BACHeLOR THeATRe DANCe PeRFORMANCe
Dance Theatre / Modern and Contemporary Urban are two branches of training that share the same basic dance techniques, although they differ in elaboration and specialisation. We connect Contemporary Urban with contemporary dance to kindle the development of a new dance vocabulary. The professional practice of both resemble each other substantially, although Contemporary Urban graduates are also employed in more commercial fields of work.
Common fields of training for both program-mes are Floor Work and Release, Somatic Awareness (Yoga, e.g. Feldenkrais), Ballet, Graham, performance skills and critical (self)reflection. We focus on both practical orien-tations, with an emphasis on entrepreneurship and network com-petences.
Dance Theatre / Modern
The central dance techniques are contemporary Cunningham and Limon. Equally
important are the techniques of the contemporary European dance theatre.
Contemporary Urban
The central dance technique is urban dance as created in the nineteen eighties
in the American urban subculture. This includes Hiphop (popping, locking,
B-boying and house) and Authentic Jazz. We complete these techniques with
non-European urban styles such as contemporary African and Indian dance.
Choreography
After the second year, students can apply for the Choreography training programme.
The emphasis lies on the development of creativity, choreographic skills, research
and the creating process in the art of dance. The programme aims at students with
an individual and artistic vision, and with an intrinsic urge to make their ‘own’ and
‘innovative’ work. The personal affinity with the art of dance is strong.
The training rests on four pillars: choreographic research, translation, structuring
and communication. Practical workshops are given in theatre lighting, scenography,
dance and camera, theatre, concept development, essay writing, entrepreneurship,
and orientation in the field of work. The students are also trained in their personal
performing capacities.
During their third year, the students create five choreographies as a preparation
for the professional practice, as well as a final choreography during their fourth
year. On these occasions, the students work with professional dancers and in a
professional setting. In this last year they also produce a longer practical research
with a choreographer / dance company of their own choice.
