What did he do

• Would you sail a primitive raft for 4,300 nautical miles across the world’s biggest ocean for 101 days, in a pae-pae raft they constructed from balsa wood?

• christened the Kon Tiki? do you think that you could, or do you think people could or that they are maybe a little crazy if they do?

• well I know someone who did and yes I think he might sometimes I think he might have been mental; but he believed.

Thor Heyerdahl

• The expedition encluded Thor Heyerdahl, Erik Hesselberg, Bengt Danielsson, Knut Haugland, Torstein Raaby, Herman Watzinger.

• The expedition also carried a pet parrot named Lorita.

Before

• Thor Heyerdahl first searched for a wife in the news paper for someone who would come to French Polynesia with him and never come back to Norway.

When and where did he start

• In 1947, Heyerdahl and five fellow adventurers sailed from Peru to French Polynesia.

• The Kon-Tiki expedition was inspired by old reports and drawings made by the Spanish Conquistadors of Inca rafts, and by nati.

On the trip:

• People were starting to regret coming, were they lost were they going to die, would they actually ever going to get there, what do you think? Yes, no.

• They did in the end but as kon-tiki they crashed into a rock and as Thor had never learnt how to swim it wasn’t pleasant but they washed up onto the shore of French Polynesia

Why did he do it?

• He thought that the people on French Polynesia were not from the surrounding Islands but all the way from America

• loads of people abused him but he kept cool because he knew that one day he would prove them wrong and he would show them. Who could have thought it would lead to Kon-tiki?
