Letter from the Board President

Dear Friends,

This Report is provided so that you may consider the progress that the Emily Taylor Center for Women & Gender Equity has made in its quest to improve the pathways to success for women and gender equity at the University of Kansas over the past year. Progress is mentioned briefly so as to highlight increased KU and community involvement, improved efforts to achieve gender equity as well as enhanced success in identifying problem areas and taking initiative to address these problem areas by designing, and engaging in, appropriate actions.

Particular highlights for 2013-2014 include recognition of outstanding women by both the Women of Distinction and Hall of Fame programs, recognition of outstanding men by the Men of Merit program, appointment of particularly gifted and committed students to the administrative team as well as outstanding community and faculty members to the Advisory Board, acquisition of significant external funding including over $10,000 to support an internship and, last but not least, careful attention to equitable utilization of available funds for these efforts. An administrative overhead expense of only five percent of the budget documents this final emphasis. In addition, the Center hosted the Graduate Women’s Forum, which was quite well attended, co-hosted a KU Women Faculty and Staff Brown Bag Luncheon with the Office of Multicultural Affairs, initiated a new Gender Research Initiative with the Women’s Foundation of Greater Kansas City, and sponsored the Jana Mackey Distinguished Lecture Series. Last spring’s Jana Mackey lecture featured Urmi Basu, a warrior in the fight to prevent human trafficking. The Center also will be working with the School of Business to host a leadership conference aimed at teaching KU women skills necessary to succeed in today’s professional world.

As we progress into 2015, our Advisory Board internal effort includes assessment of our structure as well as review and evaluation of current and proposed projects and functions.

It has been a great honor and personal pleasure for me to represent the Center’s Advisory Board over the past year. Your thoughtful generous gifts and support have permitted the Center to continue making progress on our intrinsic and historical goals. In the coming year the Center will stay abreast of new areas and conditions within our university environment. We will evolve and design appropriate pathways leading to continued success for women and human endeavors as a whole.

We hope you will enjoy the enclosed Annual Report and send our thanks to all for your commitment to this increasingly important initiative in our students’ current and future lives.

Best regards,

Joan S. Hunt, PhD, DSc(HON)

Graduate Assistant

Friends,

There has been a lot to celebrate this year for gender equity and the advancement of

women. The nation saw many ‘firsts’: Janet Yellen became the first woman to chair the

Federal Reserve and Becky Hammon became the first full-time female assistant coach

in the N.B.A. We saw the creation of national committees and task forces to address

some of the issues that have blocked women from moving forward; importantly, sexual

assault on college campuses and opportunities for women in STEM. We have also seen

national and International movements engaging men in discussions about masculinities

and gender equity, such as the 2014 MenEngage Global Symposium.

Shifting our sites closer to home, the Center provided a wide range of programs and

services on issues of current concern. With the support of campus and community

partners, the Center worked to raise awareness, increase involvement and foster

empowerment. A few of this year’s efforts include Sexual Assault Awareness Week,

Breast Cancer Awareness programming, and the Gender Leadership Conference. We

honored over fifty KU students, faculty, staff and alumnae for their outstanding

accomplishments and contributions to equity. The Center’s programs align with KU’s

Bold Aspirations goals and provide important information and tools to improve our

understanding of gender to generate solutions related to longstanding inequities.

This year we welcomed a new Vice Provost for Diversity and Equity— Dr. Nate Thomas.

Dr. Thomas brings a wealth of experience as an entrepreneur, administrator and

educator to our efforts to include gender as a central component in KU’s diversity goals.

Many thanks to Dr. Sara Rosen for her support and advocacy while she served as

Interim Vice Provost this year.

With these positive steps forward, we are challenged to look for opportunities to build

our human and financial capital to carry out our new and continuing initiatives. While

continuing to creatively partner and collaborate to maximize effectiveness, we will look

for additional funding opportunities to help us support and build programs, service and

support to, as our mottos states, “challenge the status quo to achieve gender equity.”

We thank you for your ongoing support and commitment to the important work of

creating a more inclusive climate that supports success for all of our members.

— Kathy Rose-Mockry, Director

New Initiatives

Graduate Women’s Forum: The Forum was a cross-disciplinary program, open to all graduate women, hosted by the Emily Taylor Center and facilitated by Dr. Alesha Doan. In a candid, honest dialogue, attendees discussed the challenges of being a graduate student and strategies to utilize for success.

KU Women Faculty and Staff Luncheon: The Luncheon kicked-off the Center’s new focus on increasing our faculty and staff programming. At the luncheon, women were able to create new connections. The Center also collected information on what women would like to see from future programs, leading to the planning of monthly programs for the coming school year.

Continuing Excellence

69% of attendees at Emily Taylor Center programs indicated that they were inspired to become more engaged in their community or campus.

In one semester, the Center’s award winning lactation stations were utilized over 130 times.

Student volunteers donated nearly 400 hours to the Center’s everyday programming and operation.

The Center recognized 44 women students, staff, faculty, and alumnae for their outstanding accomplishments.

Men of Merit Poster recognized 15 KU men for their efforts to redefine masculinity by modeling how to challenge gender norms.

The 2013-2014 school year brought many positive changes to the Center. Over the past year, we have modernized the Women’s Hall of Fame nomination process, streamlined the Women’s Recognition and KU Women of Distinction Calendar selection process, and fostered new partnerships throughout the state.

The Center has been working hard to reach out to new community and campus partners and these efforts have paid off. Below are just a few of the Center’s new partnerships and collaborative projects.

Women’s Foundation of Greater KC Collaboration: Center staff and the Women’s Foundation are working together to generate research that provides guidance, information and resources to address gender-related inequity and barriers affecting KU and the state.

KU School of Business Collaboration: The Center is working to host a women’s leadership conference with the KU School of Business and recent Women’s Hall of Fame inductee, Dean Bendapudi. Next spring, KU will be home to a conference designed to provide women students with the skills and strategies necessary to get ahead in today’s workforce as well as personal and professional development opportunities.

Career Center Collaboration: Center staff and the University Career Center recently launched a webpage with resources for women. The page is the first step in a collaboration aimed at helping women enter the workforce with confidence and the resources they need to make informed decisions about their career choices. Fulfilling Our Mission Through Collaboration

Early Outcomes: The Appointments Project

Last fall, Center staff and the Women’s Foundation of Greater Kansas City put

together a committee to conduct research related to gender equity in Kansas.

This collaboration has already produced some amazing results, namely the

Appointments Project.

Dr. Barbara Kerr, a KU Distinguished Professor in Psychology, conducted research

to inform Mayor Sly James of Kansas City, Missouri about the level of female

participation in city government. The result of her research? The creation of a

talent bank of Kansas women called the Appointments Project. The Appointments

Project works to help Mayor James make appointments that enhance the

involvement of women on boards, commissions, task forces, and committees. This

is done by collecting potential applicants and providing mentorship and applicable

training with the intent to make recommendations to Mayor James.

The Appointments Project welcomes resumés from any woman who seeks an

appointment to a board, commission, task force, or committee. Anyone of color,

with disabilities, veterans, and individuals with diverse backgrounds are

encouraged to apply. Interested in applying? Visit www.wfgkc.org/our-work

In the coming school year we will celebrate the 10th anniversary of the KU Women of Distinction Calendar. As the Center looks back over the past 10 years, we are honored to have been able to recognize so many outstanding women. As of 2014, we have recognized 238 remarkable KU women and look forward to honoring many more.

The Calendar was created as a way to fight back against the negative stereotypes portrayed in the “Women of KU Calendar.” Kathy Rose-Mockry wanted to illustrate the important, and often overlooked, role that the women of KU play in making KU the excellent institution it is. She certainly has achieved her goal. In the last year alone, approximately 1,300 calendars were distributed to campus departments, community partners, and friends.

Many of the women recognized on the Calendar have gone on to accomplish great things. Below are a few updates on some of the amazing work KU Women of Distinction do in our community, state, nation, and world.

Did You Know?

A majority of the Center’s budget for the year comes from donations.

The cost to maintain and update the KU Women’s Hall of Fame, Women’s Recognition Awards, student award

stipends, and KU Women of Distinction Calendar comes from

private funds.

Without the support of friends such as you these important programs would cease to exist, and many of

the Center’s awareness and educational efforts would not be

fully funded.

Thank you for helping us bring the best possible services to KU students, staff, and faculty!

We’re Moving!

The Center’s largest change is yet to come – our office. In the coming

months, the Center will be changing location. We are moving out of the

Kansas Union and into Wescoe. This move has been contemplated since

the Center became a part of the Diversity & Equity Unit two years ago. The

move will occur in October or November. The Center will be sure to

contact our friends with our new address soon!

Fundraising Reaches New Heights

The Center simply could not operate without the generosity of our friends. Every

year the University funds a full-time Director and Assistant Director. The University

also funds a part-time Graduate Assistant and up to seven hours a week for an

undergraduate intern. However, the student-salary funds are only available during

the fall and spring semesters. Though the Center is grateful for this funding, the

University funds are not enough to effectively run all of the Center’s vital programs.

This is why the Center called on our friends to help fund a paid internship.

The fiscal year is over and the final tally is in… you did it! The Center asked our

friends for $10,000 to fund a part-time internship, you gave over $15,000! Thanks

to your support the Center will be able to hire TWO new part-time undergraduate

students for the coming year. These new interns will help with the Center’s day-to-

day operation, awareness programs, marketing and helping to maintain the KU

Women’s Hall of Fame.

I started volunteering with the Emily Taylor Center while I was still in high school in 2010. I served as a member of the planning committee for the Jana Mackey Distinguished Lecture Series. Jana was a dear friend of mine, and being able to create something so meaningful in her honor is just one of the many gifts the Emily Taylor Center has given me. The Center also gave me a safe haven when I became a student this last year; I already had somewhere I belonged

and I was already contributing to something I care deeply about, which is more than a lot of college freshman can say. After years of volunteering and learning about all the Emily Taylor Center does, it is such a dream come true to be an intern here. I feel very blessed to be paid for contributing to the KU community through all of the very important work we do.

This is more than an internship to me, it is an invaluable life experience to be mentored by outstanding women and learn important life skills. I intend to do my best and give back to the Emily Taylor Center as a thank you for all it has given me. — Kathy Olcott, Undergraduate Intern
