SEASON PREVIEWSEASON PREVIEW
2014 SEASON PREVIEW
The Coast Guard women’s soccer team exceeded external expectations a season ago en route to a 6-11-2 fi nish and qualifying for the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference Tournament for the fi rst time since 2003 after posting a 3-5-2 record in NEWMAC play. This year’s club will sport a very similar look to last year’s as nine of 11 starters return from a team which posted the second-highest win total in conference play in school history.
Head coach Susan Grant returns for her eighth season at the helm. She’ll be assisted, once again, by assistants Amanda Illinger and LT Beth Nakagawa and goalkeeping coach Anthony Occhialini who will return for their eighth and second season, respectively.
The Bears will see their top three scorers - and fi ve of their top six - from a season ago return to the pitch this fall. They will be led on the fi eld, off ensively, by returning scoring leader, junior Sarah Hills who tallied 13 points (6 goals, 1 assist) while playing in all 19 games. She will partner up top with senior Liz Runci to serve as the Bears’ primary striking duo for the 2014 season.
Sophomore Terry Netusil will add to the off ensive presence as well, following an outstanding freshman campaign a season ago in which she scored four goals and assisted on four others after starting all 19 matches. She’ll be expected to continue her tremendous off ensive exploits once again this year.
In addition to Netusil and Hills, the Bears bring back three other multi-goal scorers senior Lindsay Duplessis (3 goals, 1 assist), junior Caroline Eastman (2 goals), and senior Julia Mundy (2 goals). Netusil and Duplessis will be counted on to be controllers of the ball and distributors while patrolling the center midfi eld positions. The task of running the sidelines as outside midfi elders will fall to Mundy, sophomore Brianna Grisell (16 games, 1 goal), and sophomore Alyssa Sato (19 games, 2 assists).
The strength of the Bears this season may well be their defense which returns two full-time starting backs and senior goalkeeper Holly Moore. Senior Avery Ayres and junior Hanna Jansson combined to make 38 starts last season in helping to limit opponents to just 31 goals leading the Bears to their highest win total since 2010. Sophomore Katie Clark (18 games, 1 assist), after a terrifi c debut season will make the transition from striker to back this season in an eff ort to further strengthen the Bears’ defense. Another addition to the defense comes in the form of sophomores Emily Matthews and Moira Meek and junior Andrea Saldana who were strong contributors when they were on the fi eld last season.
Moore saw full-time action in goal for the fi rst time last season posting a solid 1.62 goals against average on the strength of three shutouts and incredible .771 save percentage after stopping 84 shots in 2013.
Moore has been impressive throughout preseason workouts and has been really motivated and driven. Head coach Susan Grant raved about Moore, saying, “She’s standing out in camp after coming back fi t and has looked great in training. She appears determined and focused to lead the team to great heights this season.”
Coast Guard welcomes three freshmen into the fold this season in Gabrielle Auzenbergs (Shrewsbury, Mass.), Ellie Donnelly (Fort Belvoir, Va.), and Melissa Zakrewski (Gasport, N.Y.).
Crucial to the Coast Guard success this season, according to Coach Grant, will be “getting off to a strong non-conference start and playing our best rather than playing to the level of our opponents.” If the Bears are able to do these things there’s no reason they shouldn’t be able to reach their goal of making it to the NEWMAC Tournament for the second successive season.
The Bears will open the 2014 season on Friday, August 29th at Anna Maria before hosting Mitchell College on Wednesday, September 3rd in their home opener at the CGA Track and Field Complex at 6 pm.

She served tours of duty as Chief of Offi cer Assignments and as Program Reviewer and Acquisition Funds Coordinator for Coast Guard major systems acquisitions, including the 225-foot buoy tenders and 87-foot coastal patrol boats. She broadened her experience as the Secretary of Transportation’s military assistant and years later as the Commandant’s executive assistant. DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICSDIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS
TIM FITZPATRICKDIRECTOR OF ATHLETICSFOURTH YEAR
Tim Fitzpatrick is beginning his fourth year as Director of Athletics at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, and on his watch the USCGA’s athletic program has seen growth in several key areas. In addition to securing a comprehensive, fi ve-year shoe and apparel agreement with adidas America for the academy’s 23 NCAA sports, has overseen a rebranding initiative that has resulted in new logos and marks and created an athletic booster organization (the U.S. Coast Guard Academy Bear Club). Under Fitzpatrick’s guidance, the department produced its fi rst-ever women’s professional development seminar (the Women’s LeadHERship Symposium) for female USCGA athletic staff members as well as attendees from colleges and universities throughout New England, and has launched an external program for sale of corporate sponsorships and partnerships.
Fitzpatrick was the Director of Athletics at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi for two years prior to his arrival at USCGA, after spending the previous four years as the Deputy Athletic Director at Indiana University. At Texas A&M – Corpus Christi, Fitzpatrick secured major gifts for construction of a new outdoor tennis center, as well as renovation of the university’s baseball and softball stadiums. He additionally served on the NCAA’s Division I Women’s Basketball Issues Committee while in south Texas, and executed a strategic plan which increased the department’s corporate sponsorship revenue by nearly 40%.
While at Indiana, he was responsible for internal administration of the department, oversaw capital construction and facilities management, and had oversight of the football, men’s basketball and women’s basketball programs. Additionally, Fitzpatrick managed IU’s external units, including marketing, ticket operations, licensing, merchandising, website, and publications.
Additionally, he negotiated a 6-year, $21,000,000 shoe and apparel agreement with adidas America and administered the Hoosiers’ multi-media partnerships with Learfi eld Sports and the Big Ten Network. During his tenure, Indiana realized a ticket sales revenue increase of 15-percent over annual budgeted projections.
Fitzpatrick came to IU after spending the previous fi ve years as COO and associate athletics director for external operations at the U.S. Military Academy. Fitzpatrick directed a fundraising eff ort that saw Army’s “A Club” donor base grow from 750 to 6,700 and annual giving grow from $500,000
to $1.8 million. He also cultivated the Army Sports Network from two radio stations to 18, including 50,000-watt ESPN 1050 in New York City. During his tenure at West Point, corporate sponsorship revenue jumped from $250,000 to $920,000 annually.
He arrived at West Point from the University of North Carolina-Charlotte, where he served as the associate athletics director for external aff airs and executive director of the athletic foundation. Fitzpatrick’s work at Charlotte resulted in a 26-percent increase in annual gifts and a 39-percent increase in planned gifts.
Prior to Army and Charlotte, Fitzpatrick served in a similar role at the University of Pittsburgh. In addition to serving as the men’s basketball sport administrator, he directed a staff that generated a school record $1.4 million in sponsorship revenue and a $125,000 increase in annual giving.
Fitzpatrick was a senior associate athletics director at the University of North Texas from May 1994 to June 1996. He was instrumental in UNT’s transition from NCAA Division I-AA football to the Big West Conference, and during the 1994 football season, North Texas was one of three programs nationally to have every football game televised in its home market. This local television package generated more than $700,000 in corporate sponsorship revenue.
He gained considerable experience as Assistant Commissioner of the Southwest Conference from 1992-94. Fitzpatrick negotiated a $2.25 million, three-year men’s basketball tournament title sponsorship with the Dr. Pepper Company, and he also oversaw the league’s national and local television syndication eff orts.
Fitzpatrick began his athletic administration career as the assistant marketing director at Army before moving on to Virginia Commonwealth as the director of marketing and Ticket Sales (1984-87) and Assistant Athletics Director for Marketing and Public Relations from 1987-92.
A 1981 graduate of Hampden-Sydney College with a bachelor’s degree in English, Fitzpatrick earned his master’s degree in sports administration from Ohio University in 1982.
Tim is married to Kerry Marks, and they have a son, James.
