SubstitutionAll player substitutions can take place during the play or at any dead ball
All substitutions must be through the “gate”.The substituting player must wait for the player he is replacing, to be completely off the field (subbing player touching sideline before player comes off is not illegal, see AR 46.6).Players must follow offside rules during substitution. Players coming off have the right of way.
This includes when a penalty is called!2014

SubstitutionDead Ball Substitution
During a team time out, after a goal or at the end of a period, players are not bound by the rules of substitution – They can substitute from anywhere on sideline
A team does not have to play with 10 players on the field. It is not a foul if a substitute delays entering the field (so long as they do not create an offside situation)

Your direction to the players should be “Down.”
It is the players’ responsibility to take legal positions.Say, “Set” with the whistle in your mouth, remaining perfectly still. There are no hand movements.Blow the whistle to start play.Once you have said “Set” you can then call a player for illegal procedure for an illegal faceoff position. If this is the case ask the players to stand up, signal the call and award possession.

Man–down Faceoff
If a centre faceoff is about to take place and a penalty is about to expire the player has the right, once the penalty has been released to try and get to the proper area, if they choose to.
The following dialogue should be followed on this and any penalty release. Please remember to instruct your timer’s to use this language.
2014
![Page 50: 2014 cla level 1 2-module 2 - the game-online](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081518/54b64f584a79591b4a8b4690/html5/thumbnails/50.jpg)
Man–down FaceoffA player whose penalty has expired has the right to enter the field if he feels he can legally do so.
The timer should follow this script whenever releasing a penalty:
Timer: “3, 2, 1, release.”
Player: “Can I go?”
Timer: “Ask your coach.”
2014
![Page 51: 2014 cla level 1 2-module 2 - the game-online](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081518/54b64f584a79591b4a8b4690/html5/thumbnails/51.jpg)
Man–down Faceoff
Until the whistle has blown to start play he may attempt to get to any area that he chooses to.
Once the faceoff referee has been given an OK signal from his partner, he should continue to conduct the faceoff as they normally would.
If the player chooses to enter the field it is his responsibility to make it to the required area in time.

![Page 52: 2014 cla level 1 2-module 2 - the game-online](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081518/54b64f584a79591b4a8b4690/html5/thumbnails/52.jpg)
Man–down Faceoff
If the bench side wing area had a player in it (from the same team as the penalized player) and the whistle has blown to start play, it is a technical violation for the released player to enter the field prior to possession or free ball being called.
