Our Mission

The Hunter Park GardenHouse is a project of Allen Neighbor-hood Center, a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization in Lansing, Michigan. The GardenHouse serves as a demonstration site and hub for year-round garden education. Neighbors volunteer to grow food, flowers, and community; and youth develop job and life skills in service to the neighborhood.

For six years, the Hunter Park GardenHouse has empowered neighbors to grow, prepare, and eat healthy food to better their health and become more connected with the community. We are open 6 days a week, and offer a wide assortment of pro-grams.

Gardening SuppliesRaised Garden Bed KitsGardening made easy!A planting box is just the thing for summer veggies, herbs, and flowers! Raised garden beds solve the issue of amending the soil to make it acceptable for gardening. They lengthen the grow-ing season, help the soil retain nutrients, and reduce the risk of pests and weeds. Season Extension KitsGrow earlier & later in the season. Create a low-tunnel in your backyard with one of our easily as-sembled kits. Low-tunnels protect plants from harsh elements and increase the temperature inside the tunnel by creating an insulating barrier. GardenHouse ProduceCommunity Supported Agriculture (CSA)Get your fill of fresh veggies.We grow and sell produce through a Multi-Season CSA, pro-viding access to affordable, sustainably-grown veggies, nearly year-round. We offer work-shares and accept EBT for payment. Members sign up at the beginning of a season, and commit to purchasing produce for the full season. It is a great way to meet other community members, talk about food, try new recipes, eat healthy, and sharpen gardening skills. Membership in the CSA is offered at the beginning of each season, through an application process. More details can be found at:www.allenneighborhoodcenter.org/gardenhouse/csa

Spring Greens CSA (6 weeks, March-April)$60 for season. Payment via Lump sum or Weekly SNAP/EBT payments. Produce includes: salad mix and cooking greens (Swiss chard, kale, collards).

Summer CSA (14 weeks, June-August)$280 (All Pay), $140 (1/2 pay & 1/2 work), or Work only (16 work hours per month) for season. Payment via Lump sum, Monthly, or Weekly SNAP/EBT payments. Produce includes: salad mix, head lettuce, cooking greens (Swiss chard, kale, collards), carrots, tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, beets, cucumbers, summer squash, radish, pole beans, basil, turnips, scallions, onions, potatoes, herbs, and flowers.

Fall-Winter CSA (20 weeks, October-February)$400 (All Pay), $200 (1/2 pay & 1/2 work), or Work only (16 work hours per month) for season. Payment via Lump sum, Monthly, or Weekly SNAP/EBT payments. Produce includes: salad mix, cooking greens (Swiss chard, kale, col-lards), carrots, beets, Brussels sprouts, bok choi, scallions, winter squash (acorn, butternut, delicata), potatoes, onions, radish, turnips, kohlrabi, garlic, herbs, and flowers.

Intro to Beekeeping Saturday, January 18, 12:30-2pm, $5-10 suggested donation.This workshop will teach the basics of backyard beekeeping, equipment needed, and safety. Workshop led by beekeepers Jeremy Sprague and Matt Wojack.

Planning Your Gardening Year Saturday, February 15, 12:30-2pm, $5-10 suggested donation.Plan the layout, crops, and planting schedule for your home garden. Workshop led by Linda Anderson of Lansing Urban Farm Project.

Urban Gardener Certification ProgramThis program, intended for beginner to intermediate gardeners, features 10 sessions of instruction in basic yard and greenhouse gardening skills. Participants will have hands-on instruction as we plant and care for a gar-den together over the length of the program. Registrants attend Saturday workshops with special guest lecturers, and additional

GardenHouse YouthPlanting seeds for the future. Our free after-school and summer youth programs teach youth valuable gardening, nutrition, physical fitness, leadership, team-work, and various other job and life skills.

Take Root Garden Club, for youth ages 5-10, focuses on food, gardening, nutrition, and physical fitness. Youth participate in educational games and activities, tend their own veggie garden, and make healthy snack recipes. Youth Service Corps, for youth ages 11-17, is a job and life skills training program focusing on food availability projects. Current projects include: Garden-in-a-Box, Edible Park, Park Cart, and Fruit Tree Project. School year enrollment is limited to 20 youth, and Summer enrollment is limited to 30 youth. Youth Projects

Garden-in-a-Box project provides a small-scale introduction to yard gardening for residents with limited income, gardening ability, and/or mobility while enabling youth to develop skills in horticulture, simple carpentry, and communication with diverse residents.

Edible Park project encourages park visitors to help themselves to fresh produce from fruiting trees and bushes, and perennial herbs from designated spaces in Hunter Park, that youth plant and nurture.

Park Cart project enables youth to learn business, marketing, and food safety skills as they sell healthy, low-cost snacks, bev-erages, and fresh produce to park visitors during the summer season. Park Cart Open Hours:June-August, Monday 2:30-4pm & Tuesday-Friday 1-4pm

Fruit Tree Project teaches youth valuable horticulture skills as they map neighborhood fruit trees, plant fruit trees throughout the neighborhood, and redistribute fruit to neighbors, food pan-try recipients, youth, and volunteers. Get InvolvedOur programs rely on help from volunteers. In addition to daily volunteer shifts, we also have periodic events that require vol-unteer help. It is a great opportunity to meet others, partake in hands-on garden and nutrition education, and give back to the community.
