Headquartered in Vancouver, we are Canada’s largest diversified natural resources company with major business units focused on copper, steelmaking coal, zinc and energy. Our operations and exploration projects are located around the world, including the Americas, Asia Pacific, Europe and Africa.

Copper We operate five copper mines in Canada, Chile and Peru; have three potential operations in development and are actively exploring in Canada, Chile, Mexico, Namibia, Peru and Turkey.

Steelmaking Coal Our six steelmaking coal mines are located in Western Canada, with five in southeastern British Columbia and one in west-central Alberta. A possible re-start of our Quintette mine in northeastern B.C. is currently being examined.

Zinc Zinc is produced primarily from our Red Dog mine in Alaska and Antamina mine in Peru. Zinc and lead smelting and refining, as well as electronic waste recycling, take place at our operation in Trail, British Columbia.

Energy Our energy assets are located in northeastern Alberta and include interests in the Fort Hills, Frontier and Equinox oil sands projects. We hold an interest in other oil sands leases, all of which are in the exploration phase. We also participate in several renewable energy projects, including the Waneta hydroelectric dam and the Wintering Hills Wind Power Project..

Most people go through their job search intentionally misrepresenting themselves, presenting a different version of who they really are.

They tailor a resume to reflect what they think a hiring manager is looking for. And if that works and they get an interview and spend the whole interview trying to say the things they think the hiring managers want to hear.

Here’s the danger in You not being You in an interview.

You tell interviewers what you think they want to hear. Maybe you tell them you LOVE Filing when you really don’t’ but hey they said the job involved some filing right?

You get hired under “false expectations.” What I mean is you said you love filing in the interview so guess who they think of whenever something needs to be filed? You got it… You!

You end up hating your job. You’re spending 6-8 hours a day filing stuff and

you hate filing. How did this happen? The easy answer is, you lied in the interview and said you loved it.

You’re stuck. You can’t really go to your boss or supervisor and say, “hey, I wanted to let you know that I lied to you to get hired. I really hate filing. Can someone else do it?” They hired you because you said you “loved” filing. They thought they had solved their “filing” problem and now you have just blown up their plan because you lied. That won’t end well for you.

So what can you do?

It’s pretty simple. Use your powers for good instead of evil. Let’s think about this for a second. If lying and telling them you love filing set up the expectation that you were going to become the “go to” file expert, what would happen if you set the expectation by telling them the truth about something you really love to do?

What if you had of said, “to be honest I am pretty good a filing but I am really passionate about reception, answering the

phone and providing really great customer service.”

What expectation have you set for yourself when they hire you? They might give you some filing, but they will utilize your strength at reception to answer the phones and provide customer service whenever they can – it’s what you love to do and you’re really good at it.

You told them exactly what you want to do and they will hire you based on the expectation you set for them.

Here’s a strange side effect of You being You in an interview. If you don’t get the job you’ll ALWAYS know why. You told them exactly what you want and they can’t deliver on it. No more wondering why no one is calling back.

So when you’re in an interview be honest about what you truly love and want to do and

besides telling students to execute a substantial amount of serious soul searching, my advice would be to develop a professional portfolio. whether or not the student endeavours to attend graduate school or not, a portfolio is essential to career development.

Has the student considered his or her current skill set? is the student aware of their accomplishments, strengths and competencies? Can the student articulate or understand their activities in relation to a career path? How are the skills honed and

The best advice i can offer to anyone considering graduate school is to make an informed decision! This includes knowing what your ultimate goal is for attending graduate school, whether it is at the master’s or phd level, and assessing how achievable your goal is. obtaining an academic position, securing an industry position or pursuing a passion are typical goals.

as with all goal setting, the more specific you are about what your goal is, the more likely you will be successful with achieving your goal. if your goal is to secure a position in industry or academia, then consider details such as: possible job titles, functions you would like to perform, possible organizations and industries you want to work in and locations where you would work. if your goal is to pursue your passion, then i still suggest you think ahead to what you will ultimately be doing as you cannot stay at graduate school forever.

Consider how achievable or realistic your goal is. This involves finding out as much information as possible about

your goal, including typical career paths, labour market conditions and possible challenges to securing your career goal.

Talking to people who are doing what you want to do is the best way to research your goal. of note, when exploring options make sure you clarify whether or not going to grad school is necessary.

There has been a phenomenon amongst us and it does not discriminate. Just imagine that you cannot internalize your accomplishments.

you reflect on your success and there is no self-praise nor recognition to intelligence, only credit given to such things as connections or timing; luck not merit. you overrate the competence of others and only find more self-deficiencies not adequacy within yourself.

you do not acclaim what you have done and neither degree nor credentials along the way may change what heavily lays on your mind.

This is known as Imposter Syndrome – when you have that little voice in your head saying, “they know i don’t belong here” or “it’s only a matter of time before i will be exposed as a fake.” you feel inadequate or think of yourself as a ‘con artist’ and in psychological terms, this is known as a cognitive distortion.

once you are aware and able to recognize that you suffer from imposter syndrome,

you must take steps to combat it. The goal is to change the internal dialogue in your mind so that you can enhance your process with career development.

you must find strategies that encourage your inner experiences to be meaningful, and your success to be savored – not short lived. Here are some suggestions:

Find allies: explore who else feels similar to you and the effects of those feelings. allow the comparison to others to feed your restoration of self through acceptance and understanding. There is an empowerment that can emerge when helping others as it can in turn, help you.

Connect with a professional: The advocate inclines to envision your strengths not deficits. The lens for the future and its’ endeavors are addressed with an intervention that acknowledges the new task but also focuses on your reflections of past engaged behaviors and actions. This insight could provide you with the means to your success, identifying internal resources versus the external influences. There could be a normalization of self-doubt as an element in the process yet attention to its persistence.

Talk to yourself: instead of the typical, “i must not fail” try “i will do well.” “i got this far in life because of luck” changes to “i am smart.” practice this positive thinking through daily commitments and repetition to self.

Keep a journal: Take inventories of your values, strengths, gifts, skills and accomplishments; a logical and factual reference for yourself. Tell stories to narrate your exploration of issues, reoccurring thoughts, actions and behaviors will be portrayed in your oral speech; pay attention to when yourself doubt manifests. what influences did you have in your decision making process? writing itself can be a healing agent; the self-expression can induce relaxation.

Develop a portfolio: keep record of your performance and artifacts of your achievements. keep your job descriptions and work with a career development professional to review your past career roles to ‘decode’ your professional experiences with translation into your skill set. writing your assets and being able to enunciate your duties in relationship to competencies could affirm your knowledge and even an expertise.
