CONTENTS WELCOMEDr Allan Hawke

WELCOME TO THE 2014 CANBERRA RAIDERS SEASON. I’m excited to be a part of what is shaping up to be a big year for the club, with a new Coach on board in Raiders legend Ricky Stuart and a new look squad who is committed to making 2014 a successful year for the Green Machine.

Ricky brings a professional coaching staff with him and as a collective group they provide a wealth of experience which will help us develop the squad as players and people.

It’s my fi rst year in the role as Chairman of this proud club and I’m looking forward to seeing a successful season across all parts of our organisation and I encourage our supporters to sign up as members in 2014 and become part of the Raiders family.

We’ve started the 2014 season with some exciting player re-signings and the players have been through a tough pre-season on the training park, determined to bring the on-fi eld success we know we are capable of.

Off the fi eld the playing group and coaching staff continue to be proud leaders in the community and we’ll continue to build on the 700 community appearances we made last year. We want the people of the Canberra and surrounding communities to see the Raiders as more than just a football team and we look forward to continuing our long history in the region.

Once again welcome to the 2014 season and I look forward to seeing you at GIO Stadium Canberra in 2014.

Dr Allan Hawke Chairman, Canberra Raiders.

A MESSAgE FROM hUAwEI John Lord AM

During the 2013 season Huawei sponsored a trip to Canberra for Trae O’Neill, a young Indigenous footballer with the aspiration of playing in the NRL. He had the chance to watch the team in training and join a group of players on the fi eld, as well as having lunch with a group of Indigenous players from the Raiders to learn from their experience.

The Raiders also stepped up to support Huawei’s sponsorship of the Tour De Cure, a cycling event which raises funds to help fi nd a cure for cancer. The Raiders joined in ‘cycle-off’ events at games where fans could donate to the cause and try to win Huawei smartphones by completing the furthest ride in 60 seconds. By the time the cyclists rode into Canberra, the Tour De Cure had raised over $2 million in total, and Raiders fans had a helping hand in easing the burden on cancer sufferers and their families. The Raiders also joined the ceremony when the Tour De Cure presented a cheque to Ronald McDonald House Canberra, with charity patron Terry Campese there for the ceremony.

Going into our third year of sponsorship, Huawei is proud that the Raiders were the company’s fi rst major sports team sponsorship anywhere in the world. It’s proven to be a winning combination, and Huawei’s CEO and Founder Ren Zhengfei loves his personalised Raiders jersey with “Ren Z.F.” emblazoned across the back. A Raiders jersey, signed by the team, hangs with pride in Huawei Australia’s Boardroom.

On behalf of Huawei, I’d like to wish the team well for a 2014 season of strength, passion and determination. Bring us home the Premiership!

The past two years have been a great experience for Huawei as the major sponsor. The Raiders players have teamed up with Huawei on a range of worthy projects, and we’re grateful for their support.

You’re a proud local junior, what’s it like to come back home to your local community?

It’s been easy to fi t back into the ACT community. It’s been a good transition from a family point of view and from day one I’ve really enjoyed being back at this great club. I see it as a great privilege to be able to coach here, especially after playing here.

The club’s changed a lot since I fi rst moved away which obviously happens with time. I see the club as being in really good hands and it has grown a lot since I was here as a player in terms of the facilities and staff off the fi eld.

One thing that I’m sure has stayed the same is the passion for the game of

rugby league and for the Raiders from the members of the

public, because it is most defi nitely here from

the players and from the staff.

What do the Raiders mean to you?

In a nutshell, the Raiders mean a great deal to me. You can never take away from the culture, history and tradition that the club owns. Being a local junior and making so many friends coming through the grades in addition to the great success that we enjoyed in fi rst grade speaks for itself. The club will always be very dear to my heart.

I feel very fortunate to have been involved in those great eras as a player and it’s my aim to try and lead the club into another successful era.

What have you made of the playing group during the pre-season?

I’ve been impressed. Personally I’ve tried to create relationships with the players and foster a bond between themselves which is strong and promotes mateship and care.

In addition to that, we want to be consistently challenging each other to be our best and that should be happening from day to day. I want the players to be striving to reach their best at each training session leading up to the weekend’s game.

What’s impressed me specifi cally about the playing group are the genuine personalities of the players, they’re good guys. They’re a very close group and that’s very important in any team sport.

We’ve been working on that close bond too over the pre-season, trying to enhance that respect and trust of each other.

There have been a number of talented young prospects that have recently re-signed with the club on long term deals, how exciting is this for the club?

Having those talented younger players that have come up through the grades re-sign with the club is just as important as recruiting them.

Having highly regarded prospects such as Jack Wighton, Edrick Lee and Brenko Lee re-sign on long term deals is refl ective of the way in which the club is moving forward.

I feel as though there has been a good structure here with our junior development and it’s important that we take it to the next step.

The emergence of the younger members of our squad has started to push the older guys along further which results in more competition for spots and a competitive squad. Having depth is important but having depth that challenges one another for positions is more important.

We want to have people fi ghting for their spot at the Canberra Raiders because if you’re fi ghting for your spot then you’re preparing well, you’re training well and you’ve got the right attitude of wanting to be in this team.

When you play for the Raiders in fi rst grade you’re going to feel that you’ve earned it, not that you’ve just walked into it because there’s no one else competing for your spot.

How important are the senior members of the playing group in steering this young talent in the right direction?

The younger members of the squad are really lucky here because we’ve some senior talent here that have tremendous experience and leadership qualities.

The senior players have been told that they have a really important responsibility towards our juniors. When I was a player at this club I was very fortunate to have a number of respectable senior players above me who mentored me through my pathways. That’s what our senior players need to deliver here. It’s important that they are seen to action the right values.

What can you tell us about the new look coaching staff, in particular new Assistant Coaches Dean Pay and Matt Parish?

The main thing is that I trust them and have a lot of respect for both of them. They know exactly what they are doing and they’re both passionately concerned about the improvement of each individual in the squad.

They also want to win – they hate losing.

Raiders fans are very passionate and all of us in the coaching staff here want to win as much as them and we’ll be working as hard as we can to ensure that happens.

Dean and Matt have been around the game for a long time and have had extensive experience at all levels. They were very excited to move down here and step into their roles at the Raiders and have since settled in well in the area. I’m excited to have both of them here as my assistant coaches along with Brett Kimmorley.

Another great addition to our coaching staff is that of Konrad Schultz, our full-time physiotherapist. We’ve reviewed our high performance unit and his subsequent arrival adds enormous value and will be so important to our on-fi eld success. He and the club’s doctor Wilson Lo have a great relationship which is needed because keeping your players healthy and fi t on the paddock is so important for our success in 2014.

I’ve worked with Konrad before and he’s got a great work ethic and great care for his patients. The most important person to Konrad is the person currently on his table. The players have all seen that in Konrad already and they’ve established great relationships with him as a result, so that speaks volumes for his personality and his character.

Our high performance unit of Konrad, Nigel Ashley-Jones, Leigh Woodbridge and Grant Tozer won’t leave a stone unturned in regards to making sure our players are prepared properly.

What do you make of the club’s new recruits, Kurt Baptiste, Kyle O’Donnell and Lagi Setu?

Our new recruits have fallen into the high standard structure and routine of what the boys were already doing here during the pre-season.

All three are talented players that will add great depth to our squad. Each individual has a great opportunity to put their best foot forward to try and play fi rst grade here, but make no mistake, they will have to earn their stripes.

In Round 15 the Raiders have been allocated a home Friday Night game on Channel 9 against the Bulldogs. This match will be dressed up as the 20th anniversary ‘reunion’ match of the club’s last Premiership back in 1994. What do you remember about that day?

You should ask Dean about that match (laughs). That game was one of the greatest memories of my career.

We started off so well with David Furner setting up that try for Noa Nadruku on the right hand edge and we never looked like losing from then on. It was a fabulous era to be involved in. Those sorts of memories give you the drive and the desire of wanting to win and to be successful and it would be lovely to be able to celebrate the 20th anniversary of that win against Canterbury in Round 15 this year. I’m sure we’ll have a reunion of some sort in the lead up to the match and it will be fantastic to see some of the old faces from both sides.

The coaching staff and the players are all striving to create our own triumphant memories in the upcoming seasons. We want success and we’ll work our asses off to achieve that.

What are your goals for the side in 2014?

Obviously, are goals are to win and I want us to be competitive in everything we do. I want the players to be competing to be in the Raiders line-up each week and that line-up will be competing to win every week.

We’re striving to be in the top eight and to be successful during the semi-fi nals.

The Raiders have an extremely loyal and passionate Member base, what message do you have for Club Members heading into the 2014 season?

Firstly, I want all of our Members to know that everyone at the Raiders greatly appreciates their contribution to the club; they’re as important to the Raiders Family as we are.

The message I want to give to Members is plain and simple: we’re working hard to make you proud on and off the fi eld.

thE CANbERRA RAIDERS CONtINUE tO bE ONE OF thE LEADINg CLUbS IN thE NRL IN tERMS OF COMMUNItY ENgAgEMENt AND SUPPORt. In 2013 the Raiders registered an impressive 700 visits for 1000 hours and in 2014 the club is looking to keep up this stellar level of involvement.

With many local juniors within the club’s playing ranks, Canberra’s players are thoroughly passionate about the region and look to enrich and support the community whenever possible.

The best example of this is Captain Terry Campese who took out the 2013 Ken Stephen Medal, an NRL game-wide award, for his outstanding work in the community with the Raiders and with his own charity, the Terry Campese Foundation.

The ACT region will be further enriched in 2014 with the addition of new Coach Ricky Stuart and his own Foundation.

Another exciting addition to the Raiders’ community programs in 2014 will be that of club legend Alan Tongue.

In his role as an NRL Ambassador, Tongue has been delivering the NRL’s eight week ‘Dream, Believe, Achieve’ program. Tongue will work directly

with the Raiders to deliver the program to a variety of community institutions in 2014 in the ACT region.

The programs and initiatives that the Raiders provide to the ACT region are relied on by resources provided by the club and appearances from the Raiders players. The programs are spread across a large number of areas including; healthy eating and physical activity, education, indigenous health, disability and junior rugby league.

The Raiders are heavily involved in supporting the Canberra Region Rugby League, both Senior and Junior Competitions, as recently demonstrated on Saturday 1 February 2014 at the highly successful Junior League Rego and Fun Day.

Furthermore, the Raiders will not only be involved with our major charity the ACT Eden-Monaro Cancer Support Group in 2014 but an extensive number of diverse charitable organisations by supporting and organising fundraising opportunities, making appearances and facilitating charity collections at home matches.

NYC SEASON PREvIEw Simon McGuinness

thE CANbERRA RAIDERS NYC SIDE ENJOYED A SUPERb SEASON IN 2013, FINIShINg ONE gAME ShY OF thE gRAND FINAL AND COLLECtINg A hOSt OF INDIvIDUAL AND tEAM ACCOLADES ALONg thE wAY INCLUDINg thE MINOR PREMIERShIP. Since the competition’s inception back in 2008, the Raiders have been one of the National Youth Competition’s (NYC) most successful clubs with many of the clubs current fi rst grade roster composed of NYC graduates.

Coach Mick Mantelli, who was the Assistant Coach of the Raiders’ Under 20s side when they won the inaugural premiership in 2008, believes that whilst on-fi eld success is crucial in his role, the main focus is on the development of the individuals within the roster.

“It was an extremely rewarding season last year and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience,” Mantelli said. “We obviously missed out on the big one but it was great to pick up a number of accolades along the way.

“Obviously the end result could have been better but I was defi nitely happy with the season and the efforts of the boys. To fi nish with the Minor Premiership after being the most consistent team all year was very rewarding but more importantly it’s about developing our juniors moving forward. In that regard I think that it was a pretty successful season.”

Mantelli moves into his second year as Head Coach after taking over the reins last year. He went on to take out the NYC Coach of the Year Award in his initial year and departed with the Italian side as Assistant Coach for the World Cup at seasons end.

He believes the year as a whole has thoroughly enhanced his already distinguished coaching credentials.

“It was a wonderful experience to go away with the Italian side and I feel that it has made me a better coach as a result,”

Mantelli enthused. “Surrounding yourself with NRL standard players from different areas of the world enables you to pick up different bits and pieces. You’re continuously learning as a coach and I defi nitely did learn a lot of valuable things throughout the World Cup which I can take back with me to Canberra.”

Whilst the side has lost several of their experienced stars upon their progression through to the NRL squad, Mantelli is adamant that the next crop of highly promising youngsters should have Raiders fans excited about the upcoming season.

“I’m excited about the year ahead,” Mantelli said. “We’ve always had a strong NYC team at the Raiders since the competition’s inception. We’ve always set our targets to reach the semi-fi nals and I can’t see this year being any different.

“In regards to our roster, we’re green in terms of experience but we’re also in a similar situation to what we were in with last year’s squad. It’s about us (the coaching staff) getting these blokes fi t, strong and getting up to speed with the necessary skills and structures.

“We’re going to be a disciplined and aggressive side because we’re not an overtly big team, which is similar to last year. We’ll also be a side that will use the football to give our talented outside backs the opportunity to showcase their skills.”

To lead the side forward this year, Mantelli will be looking for the sextet of – Luke Bateman, Andrew Heffernan, Brenko Lee, Patrick Mago, Kilu Pangai and Tevita Pangai Junior – to step up and employ the experience they garnered from spending the pre-season with the NRL squad.

“The experience that those boys gained by training with the NRL squad is not only benefi cial to their development but to that of their NYC team mates also,” Mantelli said.

“I’m expecting them to come back as an improved calibre of player and for that improved attitude, punctuality and professionalism to rub off onto their team mates, particularly the younger members of the squad.

“I’m looking for them to really step up and lead the way forward for us this year and have a positive and profound impact. Those sorts of guys will need to step up and fi ll the void left by last year’s players.”

A new addition to help guide the squad’s talented youngsters, particularly the budding stars in the backline, is Raiders legend Ken Nagas.

“The boys have responded very well to Kenny as Assistant Coach,” Mantelli said. “He can relate to them at their level whilst also providing them with a great role model. He’s played for Australia and NSW and won a premiership with the Raiders so he’s an easy fi gure for them to look up to and he’s got a wealth of experience to add to the players as well as Dean Souter and I.”

Of course the development of the players is not just restricted to the fi eld, with Mantelli stressing that off-fi eld development is just as crucial. Mantelli is well equipped to mentor these young men off the fi eld just as he has done with Shaun Fensom whom is undertaking a building apprenticeship under Mantelli.

“Off-fi eld development is just as important as on-fi eld development and we’re very big on that. We strongly abide by a ‘no work or study equals no play’ policy and a few of our players found that out the hard way last year. That’s the policy we go by no matter how good a player you are. We want these kids to be better people along with being better players for being a part of the Raiders.

“That’s our job here. Myself, along with Dean and Ken work really hard with these kids and seeing them progress forward with their careers and with their lives is what’s rewarding for us.

“The true fruits of our labour will come in a couple of years when these kids that are coming through at the moment progress through to fi rst grade at the Raiders. That’s the true reward and the goal for us.”

SINCE thE CANbERRA RAIDERS AFFILIAtION wIth MOUNtIES IN thE NSw CUP bEgAN IN 2012 bOth PARtIES hAvE bEEN EXCEPtIONALLY PLEASED wIth thE POSItIvE OUtCOMES DERIvED FROM thE RELAtIONShIP. The partnership with Mounties entails that the players in the Raiders NRL squad that aren’t selected for the 18 man squad for the upcoming NRL fi xture play for Mounties on the weekend.

This enables the Raiders talented yet inexperienced NYC graduates to have the opportunity to refi ne their game at a senior level to better prepare them for the rigours of the NRL.

Players such as Paul Vaughan, Jarrad Kennedy and Matt McIlwrick have been able to gain some much needed experience by playing against grown men in the NSW Cup and have been

able to force their way into the NRL side as a result of their form and the necessary improvements they have made in facets of their games.

Vaughan in particular has been an outstanding example of the benefi ts derived from the relationship.

Having graduated from the NYC at the end of 2011, the highly promising forward was viewed as being too raw for the NRL and needed to adapt to the week-in-week-out toughness of playing against adults.

He fi nished his fi rst season with Mounties in 2012 with the Player of the Year Award as well as selection in the NSW Cup representative side.

The following year he made his NRL debut in Round 7 and kept his place for the rest of the season, fi nishing with the 2013 Rookie of the Year at the Meninga Medal.

The relationship with Mounties also provides another pathway through to the NRL for players that are too old for

the NYC. Mounties stars Clay Priest and Reece Goldsmith are testament to this having spent the pre-season with the Raiders NRL squad following their outstanding form in 2013.

Mounties have fi nished just outside the top eight since their fi rst season in the NSW Cup in 2012 and as such Coach Steve Antonelli and the side will be striving for a top eight birth in 2014.

“From a club point of view we’ve been extremely happy with our affi liation with the Raiders,” Antonelli said. “We’ve had a solid fi rst couple of years but this is our third year in the NSW Cup now and we want to capitalise on that foundation and progress forward as a club. It’s our goal to make the top eight and it will be a big thing for us to achieve that aim.”

Given the tremendous facilities afforded to the players by the Mounties Group, coupled with the fantastic depth of the Raiders roster, Antonelli’s aim for 2014 is defi nitely achievable in what shapes to be another promising campaign on the fi eld for Mounties in the NSW Cup.

Ready. It’s a powerful word, and describes how Canberra feels right now. We are ready. Ready for our second century. Ready for the next stage in our growth as a city. Ready to abandon old stereotypes and march proudly into the future.

SOUthS LOgAN MAgPIES Simon McGuinness

whILSt thERE hAS LONg bEEN AN AFFILIAtION wIth thE SOUthS LOgAN AREA, thE CANbERRA RAIDERS wILL FORMERLY RE-COMMENCE thEIR PARtNERShIP wIth thE SOUthS LOgAN MAgPIES IN 2014 IN thE INtRUSt SUPER CUP. There is a lot of history and esteemed tradition surrounding the Raiders’ ties with the Souths Logan area.

Former club greats such as Mal Meninga and Gary Belcher have forged the path for a multitude of Souths Logan juniors to live out their rugby league dreams with the Raiders and it is fantastic that that pathway is being trod out currently with stars such as Edrick Lee, Sam Mataora and Josh Papalii.

The Raiders invest signifi cant resources and time into the area and the club is subsequently well supported.

For the fi rst time in three years, the Raiders have been granted permission to send their players who have migrated from Queensland to play with the Souths Logan Magpies in 2014.

This would entail that NRL squad members such as Mitch Cronin, Edrick Lee and Sam Mataora would play for the Magpies if they are not selected for the Raiders whilst up and coming NYC stars such as Brenko Lee and Patrick Mago may be blooded in the competition to further their development.

This notion would also give the Raiders’ Queensland juniors an opportunity to visit their families more frequently and allow the next crop of Souths Logan juniors to press their claim for a spot at the Raiders.

41CANbERRA RAIDERS 2014 SEASON gUIDE

“The Raiders have supported us for a long time,” Souths Logan Magpies CEO Jim McClelland said. “It’s a relationship that both parties have worked hard on and it’s blatantly obvious that it’s a long term partnership and a very positive and successful one at that.

“It’s a huge benefi t for us to get the Raiders’ Queensland juniors sent up to us again. It was a massive drain on the club when were we unable to have access to the Raiders NRL players but the inclusion of those players will certainly make a massive difference to us going forward.

“There is now a visual affi liation and a more direct pathway for our kids as well as the opportunity to play for their local team until they are NRL worthy.”

The side will be coached by former State of Origin player Josh Hannay in 2014 and the structures he has implemented at the club has already impressed Raiders High Performance Manager David Hamilton.

“After visiting the club in the off-season I can safely say that Josh Hannay knows what he is doing up there,” Hamilton said. “I was very impressed with the structures he has put in place. Our players will be very well looked after up there and their development will be continued due to playing for the Magpies in the Queensland Cup.”

Hannay will be looking to guide the Magpies into the top eight after the side missed out on the semi-fi nals in 2013 after fi nishing ninth on the ladder.

An exciting incentive in 2014 is that Canberra Raiders Members will get the opportunity to enter all Souths Logan Magpies games for free.

The 2013 season saw the competition dominated by the two Queanbeyan based sides, the Kangaroos and the Blues.

The Blues, under the coaching of former Raiders Captain Simon Woolford and led around the park by the playmaking skills of former Raiders halfback Marc Herbert, dominated the competition in 2013 however were trumped at the fi nal hurdle by their cross-town rivals the Kangaroos.

With the Blues keen to make up for last year’s heartache and the Kangaroos determined to retain the title, both sides will again be considered strong favourites for the competition in 2014.

A club that is predicted by many to be a big improver in 2014 is the Goulburn Workers Bulldogs with former Raiders playmaker Mick Picker returning to his local area to take over the reigns as Captain-Coach.

Mick is likely to play halfback and his combination with brother Ben at hooker, who previously starred with the Raiders in the NYC, is sure cause plenty of problems around the ruck area for opposition defences in 2014.

After a year they would rather forget, West Belconnen Warriors will attempt to climb off the bottom of the ladder and are fi rmly placed to do so with the addition of Justin Giteau as Head Coach and the acquisition of 2013 Raiders NRL squad member Scott Jones.

The Raiders NYC members that are not selected in the weekend’s line-up will continue to be dispersed between the local clubs this year which will not only enhance the standard of the competition but play a pivotal role in their development as players. Additionally, the junior players from the club’s Harold Matthews and SG Ball sides will re-join their local clubs once their seasons are completed.

If you are interested in playing senior Rugby League in Canberra in 2013 then head to canberra.leaguenet.com.au to fi nd your nearest club. There is a competition to suit every age and skill level so join a club today and enjoy the great game of Rugby League!

In 2014 there will again be an impressive number of home grown juniors who have proudly played for a CJRL club in all grades at the Raiders.

Household names such as Terry Campese, Jarrod Croker and Brett White all learnt the game playing in this competition and they strongly urge you to do the same.

“I fell in love with the game of rugby league after playing in the Canberra Region Junior Rugby League competition as a youngster and I have so many fond memories of learning the game with my friends and having great fun in doing so,” said Croker. “Get out and join your local club today, you wont regret it.”

Another fantastic incentive to sign up for a CRJRL club is that fact that all junior participants in the ACT receive a free 12 game pass to see the Raiders home games at GIO Stadium Canberra in 2014.

There is a club in Canberra for every junior player based on age, gender and location so contact your nearest club now for more information. Junior club contact details can be found at canberra.leaguenet.com.au
