Become an e-buddy of the Seymour. Since the inception of the Seymour Centre’s Arts Education program in 2011 we have invited teachers to join our e-advisory group – a group of educators who inform the Seymour what schools need from a performing arts centre and who also allow us to run ideas and questions by them.

A team of 14 teachers joined us in the first year and we now number over 40 and are looking for more! This group provides much needed advice and in return we are able to give them free tickets to great events throughout the year.

If you are a primary or secondary teacher and would like to join the group and contribute to the growth and development of Seymour’s education program then please send us an email with the following information.

• Teacher name/s

• School name and type (Primary or Secondary)

• Direct email contact (for confirmation)

• School email

Welcome to Seymour’s 2014 Arts Education program. In 2013 more than 20,000 primary and secondary school students engaged with our program as performers, audience and creators of an incredibly diverse range of experiences that use the arts as a powerful learning tool.

That’s a massive number of students and in 2014 we aim for it to grow even more. As you will see, the program is fantastic, providing a multitude of ways to enhance your students education through practical engagement in the performing arts.

The centrepiece of our program is Seymour’s partnership with Sport for Jove, the outstanding independent theatre company dedicated to presenting rich and compelling versions of the classics. Last year you may have seen the return of their outstanding Hamlet or the inventive Othello, played entirely in a pond of water.

In 2014, they return with three productions of syllabus texts, designed to give your students the experience of witnessing great plays performed exceptionally well. Sign up quicky for A Doll’s House, Twelfth Night and All’s Well that Ends Well, as Hamlet did, they may sell out.

Primary years will enjoy the best from the Adelaide Fringe Festival, with Squaring the Wheel, a clowning show that combines science with theatre. This production in which an amazing contraption is built before your eyes won the best children’s show at the Fringe and is very special.

Another highlight is our Reconciliation Week program featuring the brand new show from The Chooky Dancers, famous for their You Tube hit, combining traditional aboriginal dance with Zorba the Greek.

This new show is suitable for primary and secondary students and is perfect for those seeking to understand traditional culture in general or as part of an Aboriginal Studies curriculum.

Read on and you will see that the program is filled with more dynamic and memorable arts education experiences – ones that we hope will both enhance your classroom studies and ignite your students life-long love of the arts.

Oliver Jeffers’ bestselling picture book comes to life on stage for children 3-8.

Henry loves books... but not reading books. He likes to eat them! And the more he eats, the smarter he gets. He’s nearly the smartest boy in the world! But one day, Henry feels sick, and the information is so jumbled up inside, he can’t digest it! Can Henry find a way to enjoy books without using his teeth?

A cast of three use song, movement and puppetry to bring this much–loved story to life. It’s good enough to eat!

After their on-stage adventures in The 13-Storey Treehouse, our boys are joined on stage for the sequel by their neighbour Jill and the mysterious Hector Houtkop, playing their archnemesis Captain Woodenhead. But Hector seems very weird – starting with his compulsive pirate accent…

Of course the show must go on, even if it requires a treehouse, self-inflating underpants, a pirate ship, Gorgonzola the man-eating fish and a Maze of Doom...

When the first performance is struck by a series of near-fatal mishaps, Jill starts to get a very bad feeling …

Join the boys and their friends for an action–packed hour of adventure, laughs… and fish?

Whether their favourite food is roasted fox, owl ice cream, scrambled snake or Gruffalo crumble, audiences eat up this delectable tale about the adventures of a clever little mouse in a forest full of predators.

Let your imagination run wild with songs, laughs and fun for children aged 3 and up, and their adults.

Wacky contraptions, gutsy clowning, eccentric circus and puppetry in a quirky story of finding one’s place.

If you and your students are intrigued by how science and clowning can collide to create an amazing performance then join performer Jens Altheimer for the award winning Squaring the Wheel.

When an eccentric misfit meets a strange world of mechanisms, everything turns into a challenging and surprising discovery, where simple things become wonderfully complex. Kooky antics, absurd gadgets, tomfoolery and high energy are balanced with themes of loneliness, thinking outside the box, friendship and ultimately, finding one’s place in the world - a theatrical stage extravaganza.

A thrilling, hilarious and moving voyage of discovery awaits audiences at Sport for Jove’s Twelfth Night. Performed to critical acclaim during Sport For Jove’s outdoor festival season in 2013, the smash-hit production was described by the Sydney Morning Herald as “outstanding…Ryan’s accomplished, clear and free-spirited production is the play entire...absolute clarity of intention from its performers…typified by generosity of spirit.” (JASON BLAKE, SMH)

“What country, friends, is this?”

A must-see for HSC students studying this play or Shakespeare generally, and a perfect introduction to Shakespeare for younger years in English and Drama, offering total clarity in its storytelling. Q & A sessions are offered afterwards with the actors and director.

Tired of trusting to fate? Sick of the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune? Done with trusting the gods? If you want something, go out and get it.

Perhaps that’s not as easy as it sounds. But Helena, Shakespeare’s most resourceful heroine, succeeds where all else fail. She knows that luck is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration, and there are no lengths to which she will not go to win this game. If the end justifies the means, then all’s well that ends well!

“They say miracles are past…”

You’ll be surprised by Shakespeare in this rarely performed but astonishingly bold play, brought to life with the clarity and inventiveness we expect from Sport For Jove Theatre Co.

See an ‘unknown’ Shakespeare, one where you don’t know what happens next, and where fate is not written in the stars, but in the hands of an ordinary girl with a plan!

The Helmers are all set to enjoy a new life together in their new home. Torvald has been promoted to a senior position at the bank and Nora is delighted. At last, they can put their financial troubles behind them. But their fragile happiness is shattered by the arrival of an unexpected visitor. As the lies that Nora has told, and the risks that she has taken to protect her husband are exposed, they are forced to question just how perfect their marriage really is. Now, it seems, only a miracle will set them free.

With the brisk pace and plotting of a thriller, Ibsen’s tale of intrigue, fraud and betrayal exposes a world where duty, power and hypocrisy rule.

Hugely controversial when it was first performed in 1879, A Doll’s House has lost none of its power as a bold vision of feminist selfhood and rediscovery.

Leaping off the page, Adam Cook’s new production has strong contemporary resonances for today’s audiences, and promises to be dynamic, passionate and visceral.

A rare opportunity to see this watershed play live in an intelligent and exciting new production. Perfect for discussing language, character, society, gender, status and social values in the classroom.

Hosted by New York musician and educator Philip Johnston, students are led in an interactive artist Q&A after each performance. Listening resources are available prior to the performances.

Early Jazz features jazz of 20s and 30s by Duke Ellington, Jelly Roll Morton, and New Orleans jazz standards reflecting funeral and parade music, ragtime, and popular songs of the time. Miles Davis’ revolutionary 1950’s album Birth of Cool is featured in Classic Jazz, demonstrating how Davis rejected the forceful tempo of bebop to pioneer a smoother style that became a landmark in jazz evolution. James Greening’s Large Ensemble salutes the iconic big bands of Mingus and Holland in his modern ensemble that, similar to a chamber ensemble, has one player per part emphasising balanced instrumentation. Afro-Jazz six-piece Mister Ott demonstrates the place where World Music meets Jazz with 5 tone scaling, Ethiopian vocals, funk bass lines, organ swells, big sax solos, intricate horn arrangements and break beat drums!
