BGTV Celebrates 100 EpisodEs!

On February 21st BGTV, the student produced live telecast, marked its 100th episode. Caitlan Bertram ’14 and Carlyn McCormick ’15 anchored the milestone show which debuted on January 3, 2011. Since then, nearly every week, students have written, shot and edited segments for an original live broadcast which is viewed not only in classrooms and administration, but is also accessible worldwide via the Gorman website and YouTube.

Senior Caitlan Bertram is the only student who has been there since day one, and has been a part of all 100 shows. She was presented with flowers and a cake by her classmates at the end of the show. Mr. Joe Barbara, who began the program 3 years ago, says the students really do it all. “The show is theirs. They write it, shoot it and plan it and they’re out there without a net. When you’re live, it’s not only the anchors who get nervous, it’s the director, the audio person and the teleprompter operator. I’m so proud of how hard they work week after week to make BGTV informative, fun and creative.” The crew was asked after the show what other plans they had to celebrate- their answer was not surprising, “Start working on episode 101!”

Congratulations to our Speech and Debate Team who on March 15th competed at the State Speech and Debate Tournament. Out of the fifteen students that participated from Bishop Gorman, three advanced to the final rounds: Chase Berumen ’14 in Foreign Extemporaneous Speaking, Nathan Hill ’15 and Nikolas Papameletiou ’16 in Congressional Debate. Chase took fifth in his category overall. In April, the team will compete at the Golden Desert District Tournament to determine who from our district will advance to the national tournament in June. Also, congratulations to Ms. Christine Scoville, the team’s moderator and coach, on being one of three coaches in our district nominated for the Coach of the Year award!

BGHs Walks THE WalkThe Alzheimer’s Association recognized the BGHS community for having raised and contributed more than any other southern Nevada high school for the 2013 Walk to End Alzheimer’s. Team “BGHS Walks the Walk” raised more than $4,200 for the Alzheimer’s Association this past November, the most ever in Team BGHS’ nine-year history.

BGHS is the first school to be awarded this trophy which was inspired by the outstanding efforts of Team “BGHS Walks the Walk”. The trophy, which resides in the BGHS IMET Center Library, will be a traveling trophy—awarded each year to the high school that raises the most money for the Walk. Ms. Margaret Foy, co-captain and founder of Team BGHS, stated, “I hope that this recognition will motivate the BGHS Community and Team BGHS not only to raise even more money next year, but also to grow in numbers to show support toward a treatment and a cure for Alzheimer’s Disease. I know that my mother who was afflicted with this disease must be very proud of our students for all they have done to help find a cure for Alzheimer’s. Let’s keep the trophy here each year!”

On Sunday, March 16th, St. Vincent’s Lied Dining Room was a busy, busy place! Hundreds of homeless clients came to enjoy a fabulous St. Patrick’s Day meal served to them by Bishop Gorman volunteers.

Mrs. Vicki Fertitta has sponsored this special meal, along with one in the summer, and another near the holidays for the last few years, and it is a wonderful day intended to make those who are down on their luck feel valued and special. As always, our Bishop Gorman students were fabulous volunteers and when they weren’t serving meals, drinks, or bussing tables, they spent time talking with many of the clients. This is always a very worthwhile experience and you leave there with a new appreciation for what we are blessed to have. The day was a huge success!

Delise Sartini, Vicki Fertitta and Sandee Tiberti were all on hand at St. Vincent’s Lied Dining room for the St. Patrick’s Day meal that Mrs. Fertitta sponsors yearly.

GAelS SerVe The COMMuNITY

On February 22nd the Bishop Gorman community showed its support for the Children’s heart Foundation at the annual Walk With The heart of a Child event held at the Fashion Show Mall. Some of our Gaels walked in support of Team Gigi, the 5 month-old niece of senior Casey Caruso. Gigi, who was born with hypoplastic left-heart syndrome, an underdeveloped left side of her heart, has undergone one heart surgery and is awaiting a second. “I was absolutely overwhelmed by the amount of students who came out to walk. The love & enthusiasm everyone showed was so heart-warming, especially given the sensitivity of the subject to me personally. This was yet another example of how incredible & supportive the Gorman community is of one another and I couldn’t be more proud to call myself a Gael.” Casey Caruso ’14.

During This Season of Lent

In order to live out the spirit of almsgiving for

Lent, Mr. Craig’s sophomore Theology classes

collected food and toiletry items to be donated

to Casa de Luz, a house of worship in Las Vegas

serving the poor. All together, over 100 items

of food and toiletries were collected. In doing

this, the students lived out the school’s vision of

God, Accountability, Excellence, Leadership, and

Stewardship. These students demonstrated a

real desire to help the people in our community.
