From the President & CEOTides Canada is charting a course of action to accelerate positive change and achieve greater impact.

We have a history of milestones and lessons learned from achievements like coordinating the landmark financing for the Great Bear Rainforest agreements and building a unique shared platform to power social change initiatives across the country. With the experience, knowledge, and relationships we have built over the past 15 years, we are, today, in a unique position to tackle complex existing and emerging environmental and social challenges in Canada.

Even as we hold a long-range view to effecting change, we know that the right wheels need to be set in motion early on. This starts with building relationships of trust with the communities, donors, and stakeholders with whom we work across the country. It also means cultivating new

partnerships and exploring new opportunities for collaboration. This past year, we were proud to partner in:

• The creation of the Ontario Indigenous Youth Partnership Project, supporting the engagement of indigenous youth through activities that promote environmental and social well-being;

• The development of a pilot project with the Government of the Northwest Territories and other local stakeholders, using funder collaboratives as a model for on-the-land programming to benefit communities; and

• An initiative to lead research and help Canadian charities align investment with mission using the Social Venture Connexion (SVX) platform, part of an international collaboration with MaRS Centre for Impact Investing and the governments of Ontario and California.

We want to maximize social value from every charitable dollar by championing new and creative impact investing opportunities. We introduced ChangeCapital, an innovative approach to philanthropy that generates both financial return and social good. Our shared platform remains a unique offering in the charitable sector, amplifying the work of our social change projects on the ground. Last year, we welcomed Dene Nahjo, Northern Youth Leadership, BC Food Systems Network, IndigenEYEZ, and Slave River Coalition to our shared platform.

New members joined our leadership team—Peter MacLeod to our Board of Directors, and Elissa Beckett, Vice President, Development and Strategic Initiatives, and Anne Marie Johnston, Vice President, Information Systems and Communications, to our Executive Team. We also expressed our gratitude to three founding Board Members who stepped down in 2014: Alan Broadbent, Drummond Pike, and Joel Solomon.

At Tides Canada, we’re working every day to build a better future for Canadians. You’ve helped us get this far. Your continued support has never been more important. Thank you for your trust in us.

Sincerely,

Ross McMillanPresident & CEO Tides Canada 3

As a charitable foundation, much of Tides Canada revenues (donations and awards) received in one year are spent on programmatic work and grants in subsequent years. This contributes to annual fluctuations in excess (deficiencies) of revenues over expenditures as shown above. As of December 31, 2014, Tides Canada’s fund balance is $39.1 million consisting of general, externally restricted, and endowment funds.

We collaborate with both donors and social change leaders, offering a platform for on-the-ground efforts to create uncommon solutions for the common good.

Since 2000, we have worked to build bridges between and among sectors, steering more philanthropy into innovative efforts to address tough environmental and social challenges.

Tides Canada is accredited under Imagine Canada’s Standards Program that recognizes charities and nonprofits for excellence in governance, management, and transparency.
