2 HALE RESERVATION ANNUAL REPORT 2011 3

2014 was a building year, but a successful year nonetheless. With a strong base to substantiate Hale’s future, the pieces are now moving into place. This year saw growth of our team with the addition of three staff members to help support the daily operations of our growing community. Beyond adding to our staff, teamwork continues as a value at the core of everything we do at Hale. Dozens of school and corporate groups visit every year to engage in social-emotional learning by way of team-building activities. We not only teach these principles, but live them as well: this year experienced lower than average numbers for both Hale Day Camp and Membership Beach, however, in typical Hale fashion the Education and Adventure and Advancement Departments helped offset the financial deficit with historically high success rates.

This year also yielded promising results from The National Institute on Out-of-School Time (NIOST) and the RAND Corporation regarding our Hale Outdoor Learning Adventures (HOLA) program. We have verified through research that campers at Hale feel engaged and the program helps them interact socially with their peers. Among other peer organizations participating in the study, Hale campers excel at taking initiative, feel empowered to make choices, and relish the opportunity to plan and lead activities. Although funding from the original source will be phasing out, we are confident that donor support will ensure the continued success of this important program.

The second year of our participation as an official Boston Marathon charity, as well as massive success from other Race Series events including the Rodman Ride, allowed us to distribute over $170,000 in financial aid by way of camp scholarships. A second ropes course was installed to satisfy the need of growing demands from Education and Adventure clients as well as campers at Hale Day Camp. 111,000 swim lessons were given last year with potentially lifesaving results. This year laid the foundation for what seems like limitless possibilities. Hale’s exciting future grows through your invaluable support and we cannot thank you enough for being part of our team.

SUMMER CAMPOver 4,400 children attend summer camp at Hale. Along with our own day camp, Hale “partners” with many other organizations to offer children from over 70 communities an exceptional summer experience.

OUR AGENCY PARTNERS INCLUDE:Aspire CharlestownBird Street Community Center DorchesterBoston Public Schools BostonJewish Community Centers NewtonSouth Shore Stars East WeymouthWaltham Boys and Girls Club WalthamWatertown Boys and Girls Club WatertownYMCA Hyde Park and West Roxbury

On any given day there are 2,000 children enjoying Hale’s 1,137 acres, miles and miles of trails and beautiful ponds. And when campers aren’t swimming, boating and hiking, they are likely enjoying our ropes course, environmental programs or our Floating Classroom.

Over half the children who come to Hale receive some sort of financial aid.

FAMILY AND COMMUNITY PROGRAMSHale is proud to offer a variety of programs for individuals and families. Membership Beach is a unique opportunity for 420 families to take part in activities such as swimming, boating, arts and crafts and environmental education. Summer isn’t the only time that people enjoy Hale. From special events to a fun and exciting Race Series, the calendar is filled with year-round opportunities to experience our programs and facilities. Additionally, the trails are open daily for hiking, mountain biking, cross country skiing (when appropriate) and general exploration.

EDUCATION, ADVENTURE & OUTINGSOffering educational opportunities is at the core of Hale’s mission. Thousands of students from kindergarten to college participate in one or more offerings. Our ropes course, Map and Compass Adventures, and Floating Classroom continue to be among our most popular programs.

ENVIRONMENTAL RESOURCE MANAGEMENTHale Reservation invests substantial time, energy and resources to improve the protection and management of our natural resources. We continue in our efforts to be more “green” and strive to find ways to reduce our carbon footprint.

PARTNERSFulfilling our mission at Hale Reservation requires partnerships beyond our Agency Camps. Hale collaborated with the following organizations to enhance programs:

l Summer Fundl Boston Athletic Associationl Boston After School and Beyond l Dedham Medical Associatesl Rodman Ride for Kids

The Carby House still stands at the entrance of Hale.

THE MISSION OF HALE RESERVAT ION is to offer educational and

recreational opportunities that develop self-confidence, inspire a passion

for learning, and encourage an appreciation for the natural environment.

F INANCIAL SUMMARY2014 was a year of mixed results for Hale financially. A few programs, Hale Day Camp and Membership Beach, were slightly lower performing than in years past, but our year-round programming and continued work in Advancement paid off. Prior year build-up of reserve funds became more and more invaluable as we began an upgrade project on Noanet Pond Dam that requires engineering expertise and some improvements in the structure.

Programmatically, this year was a huge success. We continued to improve the quality of our offerings and reach new populations. New schools from Boston and surround-ing communities flocked to our education programs using Hale’s expansive “classroom without walls” as a learning lab for exciting activities and lessons that are linked to curriculum objectives. The family beach and summer camps benefited from a large percentage of experienced returning staff.

The Advancement Department continued its growth this year in many ways. First, there were more donors giving more money and we know why: people are becoming better connected with and more passionate about our programs and the opportunities we provide. We hear from donors about how much they love our urban programming, our trail system, and our work with teens. We know that people value children leaving their screens behind and connecting with the natural world. And all this compels people to support Hale – thank you!

Secondly, the Advancement Department grew in size. Thanks to a generous gift from the Yawkey Foundations we have added two staff to help with outreach, public relations, marketing and events. The addition of staff dedicated to these efforts began to pay off just after they joined us in the fall of 2014. We look forward to seeing what 2015 brings!

This year also began the challenge of resource allocation for the Noanet Pond Dam project. The pond is the lifeblood of Hale’s activities and existence. Built in the 1960s, the main dam has begun to show signs of weakness. We hope with early intervention we can minimize any concerns and make improvements that are not too costly. Recently, we worked to build up our reserve fund. While we will need to

rely on donors to help with this effort, we can at least begin the work with the engineers thanks to our current resources.

As we move into 2015, Hale has continued to do very well developing excellent programs, managing a growing operation, and planning for the future. These themes will undoubtedly continue next year with an eye always towards long-term financial stability for the organization.

Hale Reservation80 Carby StreetWestwood, MA 02090tel (781)326-1770 fax (781)[email protected] www.HaleReservation.org

H A L E R E S E R V A T I O N is a private, non-profit educational organization that manages over 1,137 acres of woodlands, including four ponds and over twenty miles of trails in Westwood and Dover, Massachusetts. Hale is most widely recognized for its summer day camp programs which annually serve over 4,400 children from 70 communities in the Greater Boston area. Hale also offers a family program, outdoor and environmental education experiences for children and adults, and open space for casual recreational use.

The essence of Hale Reservation can be found in Robert Sever Hale’s original desire for the organization he founded in 1918. The current programs and land management practices are the legacy of his wish “to provide education which will develop intelligent, capable and responsible citizens” and to use the land “so long as it is charitable and benevolent in nature.” The goal of today’s programs is to develop intelligent leaders and environmentally educated citizens. We believe that the diversity of the natural environment must be reflected back in the diversity of the people who experience Hale Reservation, and we strive to provide programs and opportunities for people of any race, background, religion or economic status.
