November/December 2014 President’s letter

Design Like You Give a Damn

To some extent, this letter is the inverse (or bookend) to how I started my essays this year writing Don’t Forget to Be Awesome. As I write my final President’s Letter, I’m struck by what I have learned over the past year. Rather than summarizing the year and noting our Chapter’s numerous achievements, I think it is important to place in context what those achievements have meant and why it is so critical that we continue our efforts to make Baltimore a better place.

Design Like You Give a Damn. Besides being the motto of Architecture for Humanity and a pretty awesome book, it also seems to be a pretty good way to sum up my impressions over the past year as President of AIABaltimore.

Fundamentally, I am convinced more than ever of the importance of our Chapter. As a mechanism to communicate national issues to the architects of Baltimore, to communicate with the broad and diverse community that is Baltimore, and to communicate amongst ourselves as Architects, there is no rival. From meeting and working with all of the extraordinary committees, volunteers and staff members over the past year, I have a new found appreciation for the breadth and depth of the collective knowledge of our members and the passion that they bring, day in and day out, to making our neighborhoods, our city, and our world a better place.

I am also utterly convinced that the work we do truly matters; it has such a profound impact on the lives of the people who interact with our buildings. We need to give a damn about what we do and how we do it. The work we do is too important to not fully invest ourselves in its outcome and work diligently to make sure that we our consistently offering

our best work to the public. The relevance of what we do is proven time and time again—from this Spring’s lecture series, to this Fall’s inaugural Doors Open Baltimore, to our ongoing efforts with Vacants to Value, the 21st Century School Initiative, the NTHP/ULI Partnership for Building reuse and a myriad of other activities that I can’t even begin to capture. Our collective efforts have made a difference.

We have all seen time and time again the transformative power of a well-designed, well-built environment. Where I see the great strength of our Chapter is providing the venue for all of our incredibly talented architects, associates and allied members to join together and advocate for a better built environment. Our board, our committees, and our individual members are out there making a difference. Through our advocacy for the importance of schools as centers of community, our ongoing work with Transform Baltimore, and our efforts to elevate the discussions of the roles of our public spaces and significant works of architecture, we collectively have made a difference and will continue to make a difference.

I have been honored to serve as the Chapter President for this year, and look forward to moving beyond the presidency this next January, confident that our new President, Rob Brennan, AIA, is poised and ready to lead us to an even more remarkable place.

So please, design like you give a damn. We all need to.

Thursday, November 13, 20145:30 - 6:30 PM - Networking and Appetizers 6:30 - 8:00 PM - Presentation with Q&A

Given the environmental imperatives of global warming and escalating energy prices, there is an ever-increasing need to design and build lower energy, more responsible buildings. This need has created new challenges in the industry. Join us as Professor Kim Pressnail, an Associate Professor of Civil Engineering at the University of Toronto, discusses the ‘Gemini” project: a low-energy retrofit of an 1879 historical, solid masonry home in Toronto.

Traditional approaches to achieving “low-energy” buildings in cold climates often involve designing an envelope that is more air-tight and contains more thermal insulation.

This is not the only approach to minimizing energy use.

Professor Pressnail will present an innovative construction technique for cold climates that may lead to more sustainable low-energy buildings. Known as nested thermal envelopes, the building consists of an insulated building (the ‘core’) within an insulated building (the ‘perimeter’), both designed to control heat, moisture and air movement. The insulated ‘core’ is heated and cooled year round, while the ‘perimeter’ zone is intermittently heated and cooled. Further, when heat is lost from the core zone into the perimeter zone, it can be efficiently recovered using a conventional inter-zonal heat pump.

This innovative retrofit of an historic build was completed in December of 2013. Preliminary computer modelling has shown that it may be possible to reduce the total energy demand by approximately 70%. The building is now being monitored for one year as the home is operated in the low-energy ‘Gemini mode.’ In the years that follow, monitoring will continue as the home is rented to visiting scholars and new

academic staff members.

Professor Kim D. Pressnail is an Associate Professor of Civil Engineering at the University of Toronto. He obtained his undergraduate Civil Engineering degree in 1976 and then went onto become a lawyer in Ontario in 1981. He later went back to engineering and obtained his PhD in Building Science at the University of Toronto in 1991 under the guiding hand of Professor John Timusk. He has been teaching Building Science within the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering since 1990.

Green Apple Day of Service

The AIABaltimore Emerging Professionals Committee, led by Trey Shamer, Assoc.

AIA, partnered with ACCE High School in Hampden on September 27th for the annual Green Apple Day of Service. The event brings together students, teachers, young professionals, and local organizations to improve learning environments inside and outside of schools.

A few years ago the current garden location at ACCE High School was a large paved parking lot. The school recently replaced the paved surface with a grass field and gardens, which will provide teaching and learning opportunities for the school. the paved surfaces replacing them with a grass field and gardens. AIA Baltimore continued with the transformation of this space by improving the garden. The garden provides teaching and learning opportunities for the teachers and students that previously were not available. Committee members and students worked hard to restore an existing labyrinth garden constructed on the property by excavating rocks and providing a mulched spiral pathway. The committee will return in the Spring to construct a woven wattle fence to protect the garden. If you can provide a material donation of rebar, bamboo or green willow for the fence construction, or if you would like to suggest a school to partner with for next years’ service project, please email [email protected].

Grand Design Award for Excellence in Design

Baltimore Design School

Ziger/Snead LLP, ArchitectsDesign AwardBeginning with good bones of an existing building, this design exhibits a light touch with excellent editing and restraint, yet just enough of a sense of humor. Color and natural light are utilized extremely well. The jury loved the stairwell and the water tower. Overall, this is a stellar example of thoughtful design not only preserving an existing building, but also transforming it into a compel-ling and striking amenity for its occupants and neighbors.

Michael F. Trostel, FAIA Award for Excellence in Historic Preservation

Michael F. Trostel Award for Excellence in a Historic Preservation ProjectThe jury appreciated the sensitive reuse of the historic windows, leveraging them into an overall graphic identity of the new user. We also enjoyed the playful way that important elements of the building's original industrial functions were incorporated into outdoor teaching spaces, rather than removing those elements for aesthetic reasons. The beauty of the historic architecture was kept and celebrated.

Henderson Hopkins School

Rogers Partners Architects+Urban DesignersIn any context this is an outstanding intervention that offers a nice sense of community. The design does not patronize the students, and avoids the trap of too much childish playfulness. It shows restraint in the facades, and a nice approach to the material and use of precast concrete. The respect for large-scale urban fabric as well as small-scale material details was appreciated. The project is beautifully communicated.

The jury recognized the restraint shown in this design, and appreciated a few generous touches such as the pull out of the stairs for seating and opportunities throughout for access to daylight and views, transforming it into a compelling and striking amenity for its occupants and neighbors. RM Sovich Architecture The jury liked the thoughtful and economical solution offered by the architectural forms that draw on local tradition. There is a pleasantly low-tech response to both the site, and the making of clay masonry units from earth. This project circles back to pure local intuition rather than western imposition, which is refreshing.

Design Collective, Inc.This project turned a big façade with little windows into something infused with daylight. This was a complicated project, and the design made sense of a huge space in an interesting way, juggling many elements cohesively and coherently, and transforming a back-ground historic building into a unique contribution to the built environment. This is an example of how to balance: beauty and performance, and exist-ing amenities with new purposes. The introduction of daylight throughout is alone transformational. Though all projects were reviewed regardless of achieving a green rating certification, the LEED Platinum level achieved on this project helped confirm what was so clearly presented in this submission.

Despite all the communications media available today, the bulk of high-end remodeling customers are referrals. As much as architects, designers and builders need beautiful websites, stunning brochures and creative Facebook pages, much of our work

is based on strong and effective word-of-mouth.

What puts a builder on the tip of your tongue? Is it a buzz phrase like “attention to detail,” “good communication,” or “careful crafts-manship?” Everyone says these words, but the level of commitment to them varies. Your requirements for recommending a builder may be different from those of your competitors. That recommendation is what can set you apart and could be the deciding factor in winning a project. Recommending a top-notch builder is not only about providing an excellent end product, but about the process of getting there.

The design and renovation efforts should be both efficient and fun. Of course, the builder should be detail-oriented – demonstrated by a thorough estimate and a solution-based approach to the project. He should be able to see the vision of the homeowner and the architect and provide a plan that anticipates challenges and proposes sound ideas to master them. The detail-oriented builder follows up with his team and has a project plan in place from start to finish.

A good builder should also be a good communicator and be able to bring the entire building team together—architect, designer, homeowner and builder. A good builder is respectful of everyone’s role in the process, and lets each professional do his or her job, lets you know what’s expected, communicates to the client, and fulfills expectations. A good builder should be timely in responses to you and in requirements from you. A good builder will have great resources and excellent relationships within the architecture and design community and the building community. The ability to manage the entire team seamlessly and cheerfully is key. You should enjoy working with the builder you recommend. The final product of the top-notch builder is reflected both in the satisfaction of the client and the pride of the building team. The careful craftsmanship of the finished renovation is one you are proud to include in your portfolio. Not only is it a beautiful representa-tion of your architectural vision, but it is also a demonstration of your good judgment. It is the result of a relationship that inspires confidence and trust and makes the journey as important as the destination.
