Our musical begins with the celebrated pig siblings Bao, Cha and Siu along with their mother arriving to greet fans who want to hear how the pigs became famous. (One, Two, Three Little Pigs)

The three little pigs recount their story in their messy family home filled with books, games, athletic equipment. Mother Pig decides it is time for the pigs to leave home. (A Real Pig Sty) Before leaving, she warns them about the Big Bad Wolf who took their father away from them. She also wants the pigs to remember no matter they may go in the big, wide world, they will always be family. (Perfect for a Pig)

After their goodbyes, the three little pigs begin their adventure and discover how wondrous the world is! Finally, the pigs also decide to build homes for themselves and look forward to the day their mother will come to visit them in their new homes. They also debate about what materials to use. Bao suggests they all share a home. (A Little House) Each pig decides to build a home on their own and sets out to find materials.

As Bao searches for building materials, he sees a wanted poster with a picture of the Big Bad Wolf. He runs to warn his siblings. When he leaves, the Big Bad Wolf appears as looks at the poster. He is hurt by the way he is described on the poster and explains that he is not scary at all. (A Bit Misunderstood) Finishing his plea, Big Bad Wolf begins looking for a pig.

The pigs continue to look for house building materials when they meet a merchant. He sells straw to Siu, sticks to Cha and bricks to Bao. (A Little House) The Big Bad Wolf watches as they work to build their homes. (To Build A House) Their homes are complete and the Big

Bad Wolf visits each pig. (I’ll Huff and I’ll Puff) First, he visits Siu in her straw house. Big Bad Wolf blows it down and Siu runs to her brother Cha’s house of sticks. Cha and Siu are visited by the Big Bad Wolf. (I’ll Huff and I’ll Puff) The Big bad Wolf blows Cha’s house down. Cha and Siu run to their brother Bao’s house of bricks. Again, the Big bad Wolf announces he will blow the house down. (I’ll Huff and I’ll Puff) But, the brick house doesn’t fall!

When the humiliated Big Bad Wolf leaves, Siu and Cha explain how the Big Bad Wolf destroyed their homes. Bao invites his siblings to live with him. He also devices a plan to build a wolf trap to get rid of the wolf. They work together to create the trap and hide in the brick house.

When the Big Bad Wolf returns, he has a hostage with him, Mother Pig! She begs for her life. Hearing this, Bao offers his life for his mother’s in order to lure the Big Bad Wolf into the trap. When the Big Bad Wolf frees Mother Pig and lunges for Bao, he falls into the wolf trap! Bao and Mother pig run to safety in the brick house.

While the Big bad Wolf gets angrier and brags about how he is going to come down the chimney, the pigs build a fire in the hearth. When the Big Bad Wolf slides down the chimney, he lands in a stew pot!

Now that her little pigs are safe, Mother Pig announces she must return to her home. (A Real Pig Sty) Bao suggests Mother Pig join him and his siblings, living in the lovely brick house! (A Little House) She agrees and they all live happily ever after. (One, Two, Three Little Pigs and Mum!)

“The dynamic musical theatre songwriting partnership that is George Stiles (music) and Anthony Drewe (lyrics) have been writing together since they met at Exeter University over twenty years ago.

“George and Anthony have written five musicals together:• In 2004 they composed the new songs, additional music and

lyrics, vocal and dance arrangements for the multi-award winning MARY POPPINS, currently one of the UK's and Broadway’s biggest attractions.

• Their first musical was TUTANKHAMUN (Northcott Theatre and Imagination Building); which they hope to revisit one day.

• JUST SO was produced by Cameron Mackintosh and won the 1985 Vivian Ellis Prize…none other than Steven Spielberg then secured an option to turn it into a feature animation. Just So most recently played at the Chichester Festival Theatre in 2004.

• HONK!– which was commissioned by the Watermill Theatre in 1993 – has been produced over 4,000 times and won the Olivier Award for Best Musical in 2000, the FNB VITA Award in South Africa, and the Elliot Norton Award in the USA.

• PETER PAN– A Musical Adventure, began life as a BBC concert presented in 2001 at the Royal Festival Hall starring John Thaw as a wonderfully menacing Captain Hook. Won Best Song and the Orchestras Award at the 1996 International Musical of the Year in Denmark.

“They have also written two revues and contributed songs to a variety of theatre, TV, and radio shows, including the RSC’s SHAKESPEARE REVUE, THE CHALLENGE, and Dame Edna Everage’s LOOK AT ME WHEN I’M TALKING TO YOU.”

MATERIALS• Goldilocks and the Three Bears• Recycled materials for building, such as boxes, cardboard, poster board, paper towel and tube paints• Glue, tape, or other adhesive• Paper scraps, fabric, bottle caps, pipe cleaners, and other recyclable materials for decorating• Standard (e.g., inch rulers) and non-standard (e.g., blocks) measurement tools

ACTIVITY1. Read Goldilocks and the Three Bears. After reading the book in a large group, talk with the children about the charac-

ters and events in the story.

2. Introduce character props in three different heights and sizes (tall, medium, and short); these can be dolls or rod puppets. a. Explain to the students that each of the three characters will need a house that fits its size.

3. Place students in small groups and give each group a different character from the story that they must build a house for. Provide students with the materials to build the house and encourage them to work together to choose the materials and build their house. a. Move among the tables, asking students open-ended questions and engaging them in conversations that emphasize

comparative words (e.g., longer, longest, shorter, shortest, taller, tallest, wider, widest).

4. After the houses are completed, invite students to describe how they built their houses using non-standard and standard units of measure to determine the height of the characters props and the houses. Depending on their comfort level with measuring, you may need to help facilitate this.

5. Completed houses can be displayed in your classroom math center for future activities and used as props to encourage story dictation and dramatization.

*Extension IdeasDocument the process with photos and children’s dictations, or record with a video camera or voice recorder to share with parents. To simplify the activity, provide each table with small animal figurines of different sizes and play dough or blocks to build houses that will fit the size of the animals they choose.

Follow the directions below to create the pig mask. Once complete, act out your favorite scenes from The Three Little Pigs or create new adventures!

MATERIALS1 large paper platepink paintstaplerfelt penelasticsmall cup for drawing aroundpencileraserscissors

2. Using pencil draw a light line across the plate to divide it in half. Place your cup slightly over the line in the middle of the plate and draw lightly around it to mark out the snout.

3. Cut it out and draw on the snout features.

4. Cut the remaining piece of plate in half and then cut off the ridged edge using two straight lines to make ears. Use the picture above as a guide.

5. Staple the ears in place.

6. Make a small hole on either side of the mask and thread the elastic through and tie with a knot.

7. Measure the mask against the wearer. You may need to cut away a little section on either side for the eyes.

Cha, Siu and Bao are the main characters in the play, The Three Little Pigs. But did you know it is also the name of a popular Chinese food?! Cha siu bao is a Cantonese bun filled with barbecue pork. These steamed or baked buns are served as a part of dim sum, which is kind of like small, individual snack foods.

Did you know that straw can actually be used to make a sturdy and safe house? Or that some peo-ple fill tires with dirt and stack them on top of each other to complete their abode?

Houses are made from so many different materials: • Adobe • Cob• Earth sheltered• Earthships• Earthbags• Rammed Earth• Cordwood• Bamboo• Straw bales• Rock

Discuss with your class the differences between straw, sticks, and bricks. Create a table and list the physical properties of each. You may want to bring in examples of the materials, a scale and some magnifying glasses.
