A NOTE FROM OUR BOARD OF DIRECTORS

Dear Friends and Supporters,

This has been an extraordinary year for Free The Children UK. With the expansion of our educational programme, WE Schools, into Scotland, we are now working with 2,000 schools across the UK. The commitment of young people to improving their communities never ceases to amaze us.

Entering into 2015, the momentum for change reached new heights as we held the second WE Day UK, bringing together 12,000 young people, inspirational speakers and even royalty to celebrate a year of social action.

It’s hard to believe that 20 years ago, Free The Children was just a small group of twelve 12-year-olds, eager to change the world. And while at first we weren’t quite sure how to be the change, we had the passion to know it was possible and the commitment to make it happen.

It is this shameless idealism that has allowed us to build schools in Haiti, set up health clinics in Kenya and build a community of thousands of young people, teachers and supporters who inspire us every day. Together, we’re leading a global movement that proves it’s cool to care. It’s been an incredible journey and we’re thrilled to share the achievements of the past year with you.

Dear Friends and Supporters,

I was raised with the notion that giving back to your community, like looking after your family, is an essential part of life and success. This is why I feel so honoured to be working with Free The Children in the UK. From its beginnings as a small group of students in Canada, Free The Children has grown into a worldwide movement with over two million young people involved in our programming. It is inspiring to see that the community ethos that affected me so much while I was growing up is still alive and strong in young people today.

This year, students from over 2,000 participating schools in the UK have continued to donate their time and talents to causes close to their hearts. Through WE Schools they have volunteered an amazing 217,670 hours and collected 37,320kg of food for local foodbanks. What excites me is knowing this is just the beginning, and I look forward to what 2015-2016 will bring.

My highlight of the past year was bringing WE Day to the UK for the second time. Seeing 12,000 young people from across the region come together at The SSE Arena in Wembley filled me with a great sense of pride and admiration. The atmosphere in the Arena was nothing short of euphoric and I cannot think of a better way to celebrate the actions that young people have taken to support their communities.

This year has also seen amazing milestones in Free The Children’s holistic and sustainable Adopt a Village development model. In Kenya, we celebrated the accomplishments of our first graduating class from Kisaruni All Girls Secondary School, which has been recognised as the top secondary school in the whole region. And through the Year of Education initiative, we exceeded our goal of fundraising to build 200 schools in developing communities!

We’ve all heard the age-old African proverb: “It takes a village to raise a child.” At the same time, it takes children to build community—a belief reflected in our work.

In Africa, Asia and Latin America, we aim to establish a comprehensive, child-focused development approach that gives community members the education, skills and opportunities to lift themselves out of poverty. In the UK and North America, we engage young people through service learning and active citizenship so that they can be free to achieve their fullest potential as agents of change.

Both our models are built on the understanding that the world we share unites us. Our domestic and international programming work together to provide young people with the tools and knowledge they need to lead meaningful action.

WE DAY THE MOVEMENT

Combine the energy of a live concert with the inspiration of hearing the remarkable stories of people leading change and you get WE Day, a movement that brings together world-renowned speakers and performers with tens of thousands of young people to celebrate the power they have to change the world. Students can’t buy a

ticket to WE Day—they earn it through active citizenship by participating in one local and one global action.

IN 2015 WE HELD OUR SECOND WE DAY IN THE UK, WHICH BROUGHT YOUNG PEOPLE TOGETHER FOR A DAY OF CELEBRATION, ACTIVE CITIZENSHIP AND LEADERSHIP BUILDING.

OF THE 12,000 YOUNG PEOPLE WHO ATTENDED WE DAY UK THIS YEAR, 90 PERCENT SAID THEY NOW FEEL PART OF A BROADER COMMUNITY.

Our programme challenges apathy. It gets students off their chairs and out of the classroom. Through active citizenship, it engages students to develop the skills to succeed academically, in the workforce and as

active citizens. Our programme is more than curriculum, educational resources and action campaigns—it’s a movement of students and teachers who believe that some of the most powerful lessons come from

making a meaningful difference in the world.

IN 2014-2015, 300,000 YOUNG PEOPLE WERE INVOLVED IN OUR PROGRAMMING, WITH A TOTAL OF 2,000 SCHOOLS ENGAGED IN SIX DIFFERENT CAMPAIGNS LED BY FREE THE CHILDREN.

A competitive spirit led students at The Regis School in Bognor Regis to beat a Free The Children UK record…twice!

In 2013 they took part in WE Day’s WE Scare Hunger campaign to collect tinned food for the Bognor Regis Foodbank. The young volunteers collected a record-breaking 800kg of food! They were thrilled with their achievement and wanted to do more.

The next year, seven local primary schools joined the team, hoping to launch the biggest food collection ever. Volunteers formed a human chain to transport the tins to the foodbank.

“Seeing all the food was overwhelming,” says student Chloe-Ann. “So, actually delivering it was just an experience from another world!”

Students had not only doubled their donation from the previous year, they had more than tripled it. By working together, the young people of Bognor Regis had collected over 2,876kg of food for the foodbank.

“They’ve really grasped that small actions can make a big difference and that by working collaboratively we can achieve great things,” says teacher, Caroline Saunders.

Molly had always been a keen social activist at school. She had been involved in student voice since Year 7 and taken part in food collections and sponsored silences for local charities. But she’d never thought of holding her own event to celebrate youth social action until she attended the inaugural WE Day UK in 2014. Molly was amazed by the variety of social actions that young people had taken.

“There were so many young people at WE Day who had done things and I was like, ‘I really want to do something!’”

This June, Molly launched her own Mini WE Day at her former high school in Grimsby. She brought inspiring speakers to the school to run leadership workshops and discuss the theme of the day: resilience. Molly chose resilience as she believes that, regardless of their situation, all young people have the ability to make a difference in their communities. The task of organising the day was a challenge for 17-year-old Molly but she was determined to help other young people experience the excitement she felt at WE Day.

“For her to organise something this big is a huge achievement. We’re so proud of her,” says teacher Heidi Stennet.

Our Adopt a Village model began with a single pillar: education. We soon realised that poverty requires a holistic solution. Without clean water, health care, alternative income and food security, children would miss school due to illness, having to fetch water or support their families’ farms. The five pillars of Adopt a Village are not only owned and maintained by the community, but are also designed to keep children in school, as education is the road to opportunity.

THE IMPACT OF HEALTHOUR HEALTH CARE INITIATIVES HAVE HELPED SO MANY FAMILIES THAT THE BARAKA MATERNITY WARD IN KENYA WAS VOTED THE BEST MATERNITY WING IN ALL OF NAROK COUNTY.

HEALTHA healthy community is a sustainable community. When children are well, they are less likely to miss school or drop out. And when parents are free of illness, their family businesses are more likely to thrive. By offering health training, clinics, medical supplies and workshops to developing communities, we’re helping families grow to their fullest potential.

ALTERNATIVE INCOME AND LIVELIHOOD Entrepreneurship doesn’t just give parents the means to provide for their family—it empowers a generation to discover new skills. Free The Children works to help parents, especially mothers, create new economic opportunities through leadership sessions, financial literacy workshops and vocational training.

Daisy Barengetuny is surely the hardest working 23-year-old in Kenya. With eight children, her parents were too poor to send her to secondary school. She married as a teenager and worked as a farm labourer to survive. She seemed on track to live in poverty, like many child brides in her community.

But when she was 20, Daisy joined a merry-go-round started in her community with the support of Free The Children. She and other women learned how to earn, save and invest money. Each member puts a few Kenyan shillings in a locked box each month, and once a year, each woman gets a pot of money to invest in something.

When Daisy received her money, she purchased some tea and started making milky masala chai to sell to farmers working on nearby fields. With those small profits, she bought a small shop where she made even more money. Daisy didn’t stop there.

She used the money she made from the shop to buy some goats, which provided milk that she fed to her baby, Michelle, and sold to members of her community. Her next big plan is to buy a plot of land to build a home on. But her ultimate dream?

“I want to give my daughter the education I never had,” says Daisy. “One day, I will send my daughter to college.”
