HISTORY OF THE M.E. RINKER, SR.

SCHOOL OF CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT

The M.E. Rinker, Sr. School of Construction Management combines the skills, diverse experiences and talents of its faculty members with an innovative educational curriculum to educate future construction professionals. Housed in the College of Design, Construction and Planning, the Rinker School is dedicated to construction science and management and is committed to excellence in education and research. Established in 1935, it is the oldest continuing school of construction in the U.S. In 1976, the Rinker School was one of the first programs to receive accreditation from the American Council for Construction Education, and has been recognized as an outstanding program by the Associated General Contractors Education and Research Foundation. Twenty faculty members teach and guide the School’s 500 undergraduate and 120 graduate students. Courses are offered leading to the Bachelor of Science in Construction management, the Master of Construction management or Master of Science in Construction management, and the Doctor of Philosophy degree. A Master’s degree program in International Construction Management delivers advanced education to construction professionals via distance learning. M.E. “Doc” Rinker, Sr. and the CSR/Rinker Materials Corporation provided a $5 million endowment to the School of Construction management in 1989. These contributions, combined with the State of Florida’s matching program, enabled the School to build a $10 million endowment. The School was then renamed the M.E. Rinker, Sr. School of Construction management. The Rinker Foundation and numerous benefactors donated $6 million for the School’s new building, Rinker Hall, which was completed in March 2003. Rinker Hall is the 26th building in the U.S. to have been awarded LEED gold certification by the U.S. Green Building Council. In 2005, Charles R. Perry (BCN 1960) committed $2 million to the Rinker School to fund the Charles R. Perry Program for Crafts Awareness and to build the Perry Construction Yard to house the program. Perry hoped the program would educate students in the work of subcontractors, master craft and trades people such as plumbing, masonry and welding. The Charles R. Perry Construction Yard was completed in 2007 and has a green roof, the first of its kind at the University, adding to the campus-wide sustainability effort.

Associated Builders and Contractors Student Chapter

Associated General Contractors of America Student ChapterThe Associated General Contractors of America Student Chapter at the University of Florida is part of the National Association that includes 33,000 firms from coast to coast. AGC contractors are known for their leadership. The student chapter focuses on teaching the same qualities to its members. This is accomplished by monthly meetings on current building issues with guest contractors from the North Florida region. The student chapter also takes field trips to sites in North Florida, showing students various construction methods and techniques. Our goal as a student chapter is to bring contractors to students. At our meetings, we portray successful leaders in the construction industry and how they achieve total quality management through skill, responsibility, and integrity. We strive to bring in guest speakers who can provide insight into the industry beyond that which is encountered in the classroom. Furthermore, the student chapter seeks to get students involved in the community and university by hosting both service projects and social functions.

The University of Florida Student Chapter of the Associated Builders and Contractors was established in November of 1983. The student chapter is sponsored by the Florida Gulf Coast Chapter of the national organization. The purpose of the student chapter is to increase student knowledge of the construction industry, promote fellowship and professionalism, and provide service to the Rinker School of Building Construction, the University of Florida, and the community.

The spring annual student contractor golf tournament to sponsor the ABC student competition team and support Rebuild Together is the highlight event for this chapter. Functions of the student chapter include sponsoring guest speakers at each meeting, sending representa-tives to both state and national ABC conventions, and to sponsor the annual ‘ABC Student-Contractor Social.’ The socials are an excel-lent opportunity for students and contractors to meet in an informal atmosphere. This allows contractors to conduct informal interviews for potential summer and permanent employment, as well as giving professional guidance to students.

Associated Builders and Contractor's chief purpose is the creation of a work climate where independent and union firms can work together in harmony. An important goal of the chapter is to promote the 'Merit Shop' philosophy and the right to choose between inde-pendent and union work environments.

American Society of Safety Engineers Student ChapterThe American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) is the oldest and largest safety organization in the nation. The organization’s mission is to promote the protection of people, property and the environment throughout all parts of the construction industry. Our UF chapter adopts the same overall organizational aims and attempts to provide information to construction students on a variety of safety aspects involved during the construction process. It does this through monthly meetings and lectures, as well as club activities throughout the semester.

BCN College CouncilThe Construction Management College Council is the umbrella group for the Rinker School’s organizations as well as the representative to the University of Florida for the Rinker School. Our purpose is to organize and coordinate all the Rinker clubs meeting times and semesterly events, school tailgates, the BCN football block, Intramural Sports teams, and miscellaneous social events. They help retrieve monies for both club activities and competition teams throughout the year from Student Government and the University of Florida College Council Board.

Christians in Construction

Christians in Construction was founded by the School in 1993. The main activity of CIC is to develop a community that aspires to be Christ followers. A weekly Bible Study will be conducted and guest speakers will occasionally be brought in, who are Christian busi-ness people from the construction industry, including contractors, architects, engineers, and attorneys. Students are also able to meet and develop relationships with potential employers.

The Florida Transporation Builders Association Club is a student run club at the University of Florida. The primary focus is to educate members and facilitate strong industry ties with companies. The group meets once per week to discuss the activities they have planned for each semester. In the fall the group focuses more on the competition and each spring they make it to at least four job sites, have a few guest speakers, and host an activity at the end of the academic year like a BBQ for all of the club’s members.

Construction Management Association of AmericaThe Student Chapter of the Construction Management Association of America at the University of Florida is a student run organization established by the West Central Florida Chapter of CMAA. The faculty advisor for CMAA is Professor Michael Cook. The students who comprise CMAA promote the Construction Management delivery method. CMAA encourages interaction amongst students who are majoring in various fields associated with Construction Management. Social and professional events are held throughout the year to provide a forum for students of Architecture, Building Construction, Planning, Engineering, and Business to interact and understand one another. CMAA promotes future expertise in the construction industry by creating events in which student members interact with professionals at lectures and in the field.

Design Build Institute of America Student ChapterThe UF DBIA Chapter is committed to promoting the ever growing Design-Build Construction Delivery Method. Design-Build Con-struction is making substantial progress in the industry. The UF DBIA chapter’s goal is to bring forth awareness and help students get involved in what will be the future of construction; integration. Through guest speakers, social events, conferences, site visits, and net-working the DBIA chapter provides a wide variety of opportunities to learn more about Design Build.

The UF DBIA Chapter has brought students, faulty, and industry leaders together through events, internships, and employment oppor-tunities. We encourage you to come and see the endless possibilities within the ever growing Design-Build market. Email us [email protected]

National Association of Women in ConstructionThe National Association of Women in Construction UF Chapter was established in 2001. The key goals of the organization are net-working, community involvement, hosting guest speakers and workshops, assisting with job placement, and educating and familiar-izing members with the construction industry. The girls of NAWIC had a great spring semester and are really looking forward to the fall. They are particularly excited to be involved in several upcoming community service projects. They plan to participate in Project Makeover again this year, where they will help transform the campus of a local area school. They are also looking forward to working with Rebuilding Together.

Sigma Lambda ChiSigma Lambda Chi (SLC), the international honor society of Building Construction, has the fundamental purpose of recognizing distinguished students in the M.E. Rinker, Sr. School of Building Construction for their outstanding scholastic achievement. Upon completion of their first semester, students ranked in the top 20% of their class are invited to participate in the membership process. To gain full membership into SLX, students must continually show their leadership abilities, commitment and service to the community, participation in extracurricular activities, and a keen interest in the construction industry.

SLX serves the University of Florida and its students through three main objectives based on the history and traditions upon which the society was founded. These objectives include the rendering of service to the M.E. Rinker, Sr. School of Building Construction, the development of good relations between academia, the construction industry, and the public; and the recognition of outstanding professionals in construction and allied fields.

Members of Sigma Lambda Chi can be identified throughout this yearbook by the plaque displayed on the left.

The University of Florida Student Chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council was established in 2008 and is affiliated with the Heart of Florida Chapter of the national organization. The Student Chapter is also supported by Rinker’s Powell Center for Construction and Environment. The primary purpose of the student chapter is to educate students, faculty, the university, and the surrounding community about sustainability in the built environment. The student chapter hopes to establish a platform of cooperation and networking formation among various student, faculty, governmental, and private organizations.

General meetings and socials with the Heart of Florida Chapter allows students to become educated and network with professionals in the green building community. Site visits and guest speakers provides students a “hands on” experience with sustainable development. Students active in leadership are given the opportunity to travel and participate in local, state, and national events and conferences. A Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Training Course has been established to assist and encourage students in pre-paring for the Green Associate examination. Students are encouraged to participate in local sustainable efforts.

United States Green Building Council

National Association of Home Builders Student Chapter

The National Association of Home Builders provides students with an opportunity to learn more about residential construction through membership in the industry’s largest trade association. Members are given first-hand exposure to the “real world” of the building construction industry and an invaluable complement to their academic studies.

The student chapter sponsors guest lectures, field trips and community service projects. Lecture topics include state licensing requirements, building subcontractor relationships, and planning neo-traditional neighborhoods. Field trips are taken to local developments, the Parade of Homes, and material manufacturing plants. The chapter also sponsors a trip to the International Builders Show (the industry’s largest trade show). Community service projects include Habitat for Humanity and renovation work for the local elderly and handicapped.

Student Competition TeamsEach year several teams of BCN students are picked by the previous year’s team and faculty members to compete against other construction schools’ students in competitions. Each team consists of five students, who begin preparation for the competition during the fall semester.

The team travels to competition locations where 24 hours are allotted to complete an assigned task. Traditionally, The University of Florida Construction Management Teams place among the top in the nation.

The BIM student competition team is composed of undergraduate construction students who have demonstrated the knowledge and skills of BIM software, such as Revit Architecture, Structure, and MEP. The team attends the National BIM student competition in the spring. The National BIM student competition takes place with the Associated Schools of Construction (ASC) Region 6 and 7 student competition in Reno, Nevada. The competition problem is given by a leading construction firm that specializes in BIM. The students are given the problem and have one day to complete all aspects of the problem. At the end of the day they must turn in everything they have and start to prepare for a presentation they will give the next day to the judges about their solution.

Building Information Modeling (BIM) Student Competition Team

Commercial Management Competition TeamThe Construction Management Team represents the Rinker School of Construction Management and the University of Florida by par-ticipating in national competitions against other Construction Management Programs throughout the nation. Students are challenged in their ability to manage their time and skills to produce a comprehensive package which is presented to a panel of judges (usually representatives of construction firms.) The teams consist of BCN students appointed by previous team members. Participating on the Management Team gives students the opportunity to meet professionals in the industry, make business and/or job contacts and gain real experience in bid preparation and presentations.

The first competition of the year is sponsored by the Associated Schools of Construction and takes place in mid-fall. The Rinker School of Building Construction competes in Region II which includes teams from Auburn, Clemson, East Carolina, Georgia Southern, Florida International, North Florida, Virginia Tech, and Southern Poly-Tech. During this competition each team is given twelve hours to complete and submit a proposal package for a commercial project. The following day each team gives an oral presentation about their project to a panel of judges who evaluate the complete presentations and award the job to the most qualified team. The winner of the regional competition then competes at the National Competition against the winners of the six other regions.

The second competition of the year is sponsored by the Associated Builders and Contractors and takes place in mid-spring. Competi-tion is held in conjunction with the Annual ABC Leadership Convention. Construction schools from across the nation come to compete for top honors. The ABC competition is very detail oriented. Teams are given the project drawings and specifications one month prior to the competition date. During this time, the team creates a detailed estimate, project management plan, construction schedule, and site-specific safety plan. The first day of competition is a simulated bid day. Teams receive 3 subcontractor bids every 15 minutes for 5 hours. Students are required to evaluate the scope of these bids and make the final selection on which price to use. Teams are then given one hour to compile the numbers and submit a bid proposal. A bid book containing the work done prior to the competition is turned in two hours following the bid proposal submittal. From the 26 competing teams, five teams are shortlisted and required to give a 30 minute oral presentation to a panel of judges.

Heavy Civil Competition TeamEach fall the BCN students select 6 team members and 2 shadows to represent the Rinker School and show their knowledge in the field of Heavy/Civil construction at the AGC/ASC Student Competition. The competition is around 14 hours long and is intense.

Design Build Competition TeamThe ASC holds a yearly competition where schools from all over the southeast part of the country come together to compete in various aspects of construction. The Design-Build competition requires that students prequalify with limited information before the competition The UF team acts as a design build company on a new project where once at the competition design, schedule, estimate, and propose a building within 14 hours followed by a presentation. It is a very demanding and challenging experience that brings students as close to the real world as possible while still in school. Similarly they will compete in a DBIA national competition in the fall were the top schools from the eight regions are represented. This comprises two phases with a RFQ & RFP that is completed prior to the competition and DBIA expo.

Page 28: 2014 2015 resume book electronic

LEED Competition TeamRinker School of Building Construction’s LEED Competition Team participates in the Associated Schools of Construction’s Student Competition held in October. Before the competition the team has to prepare a Request for Qualification statement. At the 2- day event UF acts as a LEED consultant trying to win a contract with a designated project. For the competition UF has to prepare LEED scorecard analysis, action plans, cost analysis to meet city LEED goals, and public relations strategies to satisfy local community and jurisdictional requirements. The team then prepares a written response via a Request for Proposal and present an oral presentation to judges the fol-lowing day.

NAHB Management Competition TeamThe UF BCN Residential Management Team competes at the National Association of Home Builders’ International Builders show. The team is assigned a case study to develop a project. The students create a development plan that includes project management, finance and cash flow, scheduling, estimating, green building and sales and marketing. The Residential Management Team is assembled each year in the fall.

The UF-ACI Student Chapter is a young chapter that started Fall 2011. The chapter is heavily focused on student/professional network-ing and increasing the Gator Nation’s involvement in the concrete industry due to its wide-spread use and sustainable properties. The club is one of the only clubs to have active members from the Engineering School of Sustainable Infrastructure and Environment (ES-SIE), the School of Architecture (SoA), and the M. E. Rinker, Sr. School of Building Construction (BCN). Their mission is to strengthen bonds between students from these schools since it is necessary to work together in the field in order to achieve the successful design and construction of structures.

American Concrete Institute - Student Club and Competition Team

The Roofing Industry Alliance for Progress (Alliance) Construction Management Student Competition is a hallmark competition that promotes careers in roofing industry management. The competition is sponsored by The Alliance. In addition to providing a significant learning opportunity, the competition fosters an environment that will bring out the best in each team; encourage dialogue among the students; and foster the team spirit as students rise to meet the challenge. The Alliance competition is designed to challenge the student’s roofing knowledge, construction management skills, time management, organizational and presentation skills. The Alliance competition features teams of four (4) college and university students testing their roofing, project management, estimating, safety, quality control and presentation skills.

Roofing Competition Team

ASC Commercial Concrete Competition TeamASC Open Competition is based on a commercial vertical construction project focused on placement of concrete and concrete solutions. Project may be a cast-in-place building or parking structure or similar but the goal is focus on vertical commercial construction. Safety deliverable include both a jobsite safety program as well as hazardous analysis for placement of concrete and associated activities. Lo-gistics plan includes overall delivery of materials, access, safety, traffic, limits, and any other activities or limits surrounding the jobsite. Equipment selection process including placement and schedule loading is also required for the competition. Team schedule needs to reflect the teams approach for meeting the project overall schedule and productivity. It is hoped that during the competition changes in conditions will presented to the students so they may demonstrate their abilities to adapt and adjust schedules to meet the conditions presented. A concrete quality control plan and estimates for QC plan is required to be presented. Teams are given the problem and are required to present their solutions to the question sponsor.
