Dear friends,this Annual Report celebrates an impressive milestone:

st. Mary’s 2014-15 Annual fund reached the $1 million mark

for the first time in the school’s history. this is a feat to be

celebrated, but not for the mere fact that we reached an

arbitrary line in the sand. the important thing about it, and

that which we do celebrate, is the one million ways this fund-

ing will help girls realize their individual potential. that is the

heart of st. Mary’s mission, the purpose for which the school was founded, and the only reason

for which we seek funding from our families, alumnae, and friends.

And so we celebrate the discoveries, victories, challenges, and yes, even the failures and

missteps our girls invariably encounter and from which they grow and learn. We celebrate their

courage, kindness, creativity, persistence, and gritty determination. And we celebrate all the

amazing things they make happen whether in the classroom or the community, on the playing

field or the stage, in a lab or an art studio, behind the scenes or center stage. each girl brings to

Suzie Goza had a gentle heart, a giver’s spirit, and an unyielding commitment to family. She was a devoted wife and patient mother of five: Anne Goza, Susan Goza Magruder ’70, Nancy Goza Godbold ’71, Hiram Goza, and Margaret Goza Howell.

When Goza’s husband died in 1966, St. Mary’s Head of School, Dr. Nathaniel Hughes, saw to it that her daughters Susan Goza Magruder ’70 and Nancy Goza Godbold ’71 received scholarships so that they could remain at St. Mary’s. Goza then returned to school to become a licensed librarian and soon landed a job at St. Mary’s, where she immediately began blessing students and the school with her wisdom, talent, and positive outlook.

The Lower School Library became Goza’s second home, and the St. Mary’s community her family. “She talked about the school, she talked about the children, and she talked about the books. It wasn’t even a job to her… Next to us, I think she cared about St. Mary’s more than anything else in her life,” reminisces Goza’s daughter, Susan. The library fit Goza’s personality flawlessly, because she was able to invest in young girls every day. She loved to select books specifically for each student. She knew every personality intimately and found great joy in sharing her love of reading with girls who were equally thirsty for knowledge. Goza blessed the school with light and life for 35 years and even after retirement remained a daily presence in the library as a devoted volunteer.

Goza eventually made the decision to include St. Mary’s in her estate plans with a bequest through her will, thereby becoming a member of the Margaret R. Hyde Society. Upon Goza’s death earlier this year, the bequest made possible the Suzanne Goza Scholarship Fund in accordance with her wish to return the gift of education Susan and Nancy received so many years ago. Goza’s legacy is one of kindness and resilience, and St. Mary’s will always cherish her for her quiet strength, humble nature, and passion for learning.

Amanda and Patrick Tamburrino, parents of St. Mary’s 3rd grader Isabella, consider St. Mary’s to be much more than just a school; it is an integral part of their family life. The vitality of the parent community, mentoring opportunities that bring

younger girls together with Middle and Upper School students, the amazing array of opportunities and experiences in and out of the classroom, and the school’s commitment to cultivating Isabella’s individual strengths and potential are what they value most about St. Mary’s. They are so inspired by the “dedicated and creative teachers who have challenged and nurtured” Isabella over the last five years that they included a bequest to St. Mary’s in their wills, thereby becoming members of the Margaret R. Hyde Society for those who designate the school to receive future gifts through their wills and estate plans.

The Tamburrinos are well-versed in the value of philanthropy due to Amanda’s position as director of development at Rhodes College. “Working in development allows me to experience firsthand how vital philanthropic support is to any organization,” Amanda says. The Tamburrinos practice what they preach: they made their initial gift to the Annual Fund early in Isabella’s first year at St. Mary’s and have remained loyal contributors to that campaign ever since. They also serve as volunteer solicitors for Class of 2025, asking other parents to join them in giving. “Tuition only accounts for about 89% of St. Mary’s operating expenses, which means that without philanthropic support from alums, parents, faculty, and friends each year, the school would cease operating at the end of March each year.”

The Tamburrinos recognize that annual gifts of time and treasure are necessary to sustain each school year, and future gifts such as their bequest ensure that St. Mary’s will have the resources it needs to nurture and educate girls long into the future. The Tamburrinos agree that this invaluable St. Mary’s experience will last throughout Isabella’s lifetime, and are eager to entrust those same memories to other future Turkeys.

As a young pharmacist, eager world traveler, and concert fanatic, Sarah Veazey has plenty to look forward to, but the brightness of her future never prevents her from valuing

the place from which she came. As a member of the Class of 2001, Sarah remains inspired by the advantages of attending a school like St. Mary’s. “I realize it was a sacrifice my parents made for me to go here,” Sarah confesses, but she believes that the long-term benefits given in exchange for the sacrifice are more than enough to merit the generous annual giving Sarah now bestows upon St. Mary’s.

Veazey is a member of the Crown Circle, a giving society that allows young alum philanthropists to give an amount based on their class year while being counted as donors in the

Neely Loomis Circle, a higher-level donor society. “It doesn’t have to be a lot, but matching the consistency of excellence that St. Mary’s has provided me is important. I want other people to have the lifelong friends and experience that I had.” Sarah now wants to be a part of St. Mary’s physical growth because of the teachers who actively demonstrated a passion for their subject and enlivened everyday curriculums with a fervor for learning. She knows her annual donation can only enhance the consistently excellent community at St. Mary’s and further build upon the walls that she still calls home.

We’ve always known our alumnae were high-achieving, but their Annual Fund participation over the past three years has been legendary. Inspired by a three-year challenge from Ashley Moore Remmers ’72, our graduates met or surpassed the 50% participation goal for three years straight. And if that weren’t

impressive enough, the Class of 1972 reached 100% participation in 2014-15. This group is the second class in St. Mary’s history to achieve this milestone; the first was the Class of 1975.

“I didn’t say it out loud at the beginning, but I thought we had a good chance of getting 100% of our class to give because Ashley is so highly regarded,” said Charlotte Day ’72 (who served as class agent with classmates Angie King Keesee, Meg Jemison Bartlett, and Anne Remmers Phillips). “I knew everyone would give because of her.”

The National Coalition of Girls’ School reports that average alumnae giving is about 25%, so our recent participation numbers are remarkable. We offer huge thanks to our alumnae, including 202 new donors, who supported the Annual Fund during Ashley’s ambitious three-year challenge.

The 1975 Cup was established last year to honor those classes that reach 100% Annual Fund participation. Alum Board President Julia Chesney McDonald ‘96 presents the Cup, named in honor of the first class to ever reach 100%, to members of the Class of 1975 at Alumnae Weekend for reaching this record level for

four straight years. The Class of 1972 also reached 100%, only the second class in history to do so, and has a plaque on the Cup.

“Guardian angel.” “Magical treasure.” “Mr. St. Mary’s.” These are just a few ways St. Mary’s folks describe Leith Catron, a long-time member of St. Mary’s facilities and maintenance team. We think this annual report of giving is the perfect place to share the story of this gentleman whose presence is a daily gift to all of us at St. Mary’s.

Mr. Leith, as we call him, can be seen daily directing carpool traffic on the North Campus, assisting with maintenance tasks, setting up chairs for programs, taking chairs down afterwards, cleaning up after events, directing visitors and parents around campus, and generally doing anything that needs doing. Through it all, he smiles and keeps a sharp eye on the girls, ever monitoring their safety.

Mr. Leith loves cars. As a young man he longed for a Chevy Camaro, a dream that he put off while he raised his son, Travis. As soon as Travis was out of the nest, Catron got that Camaro, a red one, which he proudly parks in the North Campus parking lot early every school day.

Mr. Leith takes immense pride in his work, knowing how important it is to the families of the girls he protects every day, and he always puts people first. He

never forgets a name or a face, and he will always and forever remember the car you drive and anything you might mention in a casual conversation. Young alums accompanying their daughters to their first day of Kindergarten are astonished when he greets them by name, remembers the year they graduated, inquires after their parents, and asks what ever happened to the car they drove as Seniors. He knows all of the students’ names, those of their

parents, and sometimes even their grandparents. He cares about people, and for that, he is beloved.

When he first came to us in 1989, Mr. Leith worked on the South Campus splitting time between the church and school, but he eagerly applied for a position on the North Campus, where Early Childhood and Lower School are housed, in 1996. Being with younger students is a good fit for him, he says. He loves their imaginations and that they have so much to say. When asked what he likes most about St. Mary’s, he answers that it’s the community and being treated like family. Catron received the Fannie Warr Award for Service in 2012.

The Class of 2005 celebrated its 10th reunion at Alum Weekend.

Bhavya Jha, a 20-something millennial and a junior at Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Services, radiates intellect and energy. Upon meeting her, you know instantly that she is an achiever, a go-getter, a change-agent, a high flyer, i.e. #sostmarys. Her dream job: Secretary of State, though she might consider the

presidency. She says this with sincerity, confidence, and humility, knowing that others might consider her goals lofty. Bhavya Jha does not aim low. She thrives on change: making change, changing things for the better, changing the world.

Her intelligence is fueled by a deep curiosity. As a 5th grader at St. Mary’s she read “Red Scarf Girl” by Ji-Li Jiang, the story of a girl growing up in China during the Cultural Revolution, at the encouragement of St. Mary’s librarian Penny Bower. Jha was mesmerized by the book, but was left with many questions which led her to attempt to contact the author. Penny Bower helped Jha make the connection with Jiang which resulted in a visit to St. Mary’s by the author, an event that would have a lasting impression on Jha.

That initial author visit began a partnership between Jha and St. Mary’s librarians for whom Jha has the utmost respect and devotion. Jha says, “Thanks to St. Mary’s, I was able to delve into my passion for reading, talk to an author, and have an experience with Ji-Li Jiang that spurred the founding of Creating Connections to Authors (CCTA).” Jha and the library staff brought other authors to campus and eventually CCTA was born. The program brings an author to Memphis each year to spend time at St. Mary’s and at charter and public schools. Jha was hands-on during high school; she helped raise funds, selected the author, and visited partner schools, duties now overseen by the library staff and Jha’s cousin, Ananya Thakur, a St. Mary’s 8th grader who fosters the program now. Jha’s favorite aspect of CCTA, and what she misses most, is the interaction with students at the partner schools.

To fund the program today, Jha contributes honorariums from dance recitals (yes, she dances, too!) and earnings from part-time jobs. Her parents help out for now, but Jha will take over as soon as she is able. In fact, her number one goal is to make the program sustainable because she is certain that it is changing lives and creating engaged citizens and leaders of tomorrow. Always aiming high, she looks forward to taking the program nation-wide, but for the time being she is happy with the direction of her philanthropic endeavors and grateful to St Mary’s librarians Cathy Evans and Penny Bowers for keeping her dream alive. “My contribution is small, and I know the program has a ways to go. However, it’s a start…Through self-learning and self-motivation, students will have the inner drive to run with their passion once they find it. What more could one want for tomorrow, the next day, and the day after that? Sounds like a bright future to me!” It does indeed, Ms. Jha.

Awalk around the track last spring by the father of a Turkey athlete

led to a revelation and a big change.

At that time, the track was overdue for resurfacing, a fact that was immediately apparent to him. Knowing its importance to his daughter, her teammates (whom he considers “surrogate” daughters), and indeed to the entire school, he decided to help fund the resurfacing project and soon met with school leaders. “When I left that day, I gave them a check for approximately 55% of the cost…and offered to get them another 22% from another parent,” whom it turned out, was happy to contribute, saying, “Athletics have been so important to our daughters’ St. Mary’s experience that we wanted to express our appreciation to the school and the athletic program for having such a positive impact on our girls.” St. Mary’s picked up the rest of the expense, making it a team effort “for the team!”

These parents believe that after identifying a need, the next step is to ask yourself if you can be part of the

solution. One said, “Outside of my tithe, I know of no better way to give than to help make something happen that will benefit my daughter.” And the others understood that “…in the real world we recognize that the school has to prioritize, and that may mean that some things have to be addressed at a later time as part of a larger master plan. We were fortunate to be in a position to help.”

Those who use the track are not the only ones who benefitted from the dual gift. The dad who initiated the improvements feels blessed every time he hears one of the girls comment about how soft the track is or when he sees the crowds of people using it. Athletic Director Sandra Pitts credits the resurfacing with a decrease in injuries and an increase in interest in track and cross country. “The new track is competition-ready and up to TSSAA standards. It shows a real investment in student athletes and Turkey pride.”

Both of these families continued their support of the Annual Fund in the year they made their track gifts. One explained, “To have helped make the track improvement and then to cut back or not give to the Annual Fund …would have been as if we never made the gift at all.” And the other simply said, “We did make a gift to the Annual Fund. That is why they call it an Annual Fund, correct?”

Jim Liles takes grand-parenting and learning seriously, and his granddaughter Amelia Kreher, Class of 2021, reaps the benefits. Liles nurtures her interests wholeheartedly. When Amelia took

up sewing, Liles provided a new sewing machine with all the bells and whistles. When she joined the Middle School band, Liles made sure that she had just the right flute. He looks forward to learning the saxophone himself so that they can play together. Whatever Amelia’s interest may be – horseback riding, sewing, reading, gymnastics, music – Liles is there to support and encourage her in every new venture. Needless to say, they are close, which is immediately evident when you see them together. They are close in proximity too, living within two houses of one another on the same street, so they see each other practically every day. Liles is grateful for an open dinner invitation that enables him to share the evening meal with Amelia, her brother Zachary, and their parents Sherry and David Kreher.

Liles is many things: family man, CPA, former Navy man, singer, sports fan, and philanthropist. He made his first gift to St. Mary’s Annual Fund when Amelia entered St. Mary’s in the 2nd grade. Liles says, “I was worried about Amelia transitioning into a new school at that age, but the girls welcomed her with open arms. Amelia told me just a few weeks in that she wanted to stay at St. Mary’s forever. That’s when I was sold.” So sold, that he has supported the school’s Annual Fund ever since and looks forward to getting involved in other ways.

Liles views giving as a personal responsibility, not something to leave for others, and he gives to St. Mary’s with great joy because Amelia loves her school. Liles encourages other St. Mary’s Grand Turkeys to join him in supporting St. Mary’s philanthropically.

When Jean Pigott’s daughter Deborah Pigott Moore ’68 graduated from St. Mary’s, the 20th century was just past the mid-way point, the Vietnam War was in full swing, first class postage hit an all-time high of six cents, average income in the U.S. was $7,850, and a gallon of gas set you back 34 cents. And at St. Mary’s, the mascot

was the “Belles of St. Mary’s,” tuition was less than $500, and the Mother’s Club was pictured in the yearbook under the title, “A Woman’s Work is Never Done.” My, how things have changed!

One thing that hasn’t changed, however, is Mrs. Pigott’s love for St. Mary’s, which she expresses through her loyal support of the Annual Fund. According to Moore, “My mother believed that girls’ education was vital. She selected St. Mary’s because it emphasized academics and character development, and the school was committed to empowering girls to confidently become well-rounded, productive, and successful adults.” When Moore attended St. Mary’s, the Pigotts lived on Perkins Road just down the street from what was then the school’s relatively new home on Church of the Holy Communion’s campus. She remembers those days with great fondness, and that, along with her appreciation for the education her daughter received, is what inspires her to continue to support the school today.

Mrs. Pigott now resides at Trezevant (formerly Trezevant Manor Retirement Home) where she leads an active life. She especially enjoys reconnecting with old friends and meeting new ones at frequent events for past parents, teachers, and alums who are now her neighbors at Trezevant. She was heard at one such recent event encouraging others to join her in giving to the school, “St. Mary’s needed us then, and they still do. Don’t stop giving now!”

st. mary’s community FundThe St. Mary’s Community Fund is a student-run organization that promotes community service and provides experiences for young women to learn first-hand about philanthropy and grant-making. Founded in 1998, the group has granted more than $300,000 to 50-plus children’s agencies in the Mid-South. Six organizations received funding in 2014-15.

Jenny and Sarkis Kish are certain that kismet (the Arabic word meaning “fate or destiny”) brought them together 46 years ago. Both had fled the Middle East to escape political unrest – he from Syria, she from Lebanon, though both are of Armenian heritage. They met by chance when Sarkis, who lived in Memphis where he worked for his

Uncle Zaven Kish’s growing rug company, visited Canada where Jenny’s family had settled. He was struck by her feisty personality and sparkling eyes, she by his kindness and tenderness. He finally got her to visit Memphis to meet his family, and the rest is history. They married, settled down, and started their family. They have a son, Sarkis, Jr., who now runs Sarkis Kish Oriental Rugs, the company his father built into a thriving enterprise; a daughter, Mary Anne Kish Seibert who graduated from St. Mary’s in 1990: and two beautiful grandchildren, Zoe and Turner.

The Kishes may be the biggest fans of the Buckman Center for the Performing Arts. According to Director Cindi Younker, “When we decided to create a world music program for children ages two and up, the Kishes immediately volunteered to underwrite the program. We didn’t even have to ask. They provided the “Magic Carpets” from their store and funded the artist fee to cover four shows. That was nine years ago, and they have continued their support ever since.” They never miss a show at the Buckman or an opportunity to introduce new patrons to the venue and its programming. For the Kishes, their partnership with Buckman is a no-brainer; they love what they experience, and the fact that their daughter is a St. Mary’s graduate makes it an even better fit. For them, it’s the perfect opportunity to give back and support the arts at the school their daughter loved.

And give back, they do. In fact, Jenny Kish playfully refers to her husband as the “Godfather” because of his passion for helping others, a philosophy he refers to as “mitzvah,” the Hebrew word that has come to express an act of human kindness. As a young immigrant in the United States, Kish learned the ways of a new country and eventually claimed it for his own through the help of mentors and friends who taught him that life is much more than business and making money, a lesson that became a guiding principle for Kish. The list of organizations the Kishes support is lengthy and wide-ranging, and they give with gratitude and joy. “It’s our city, where we make a living. When you come to the point where you are blessed, you give back, like mitzvah,” Kish explains.
